My late mother (God rest her soul) had to move 7k miles away just to get away from an abusive husband. This was back in 1999. I wouldn't have grown up in the United States had it not been for the domestic abuse my mother endured in our home country. We had a privileged life, went to private schools our whole lives. She had a thriving business and was well known in our home country. She literally gave up EVERYTHING and smuggled me and my 2 sisters out of the country just so that she could no longer live in fear. Sometimes you have to take drastic (and I mean DRASTIC) measures to find your peace of mind. In the end, it will be worth it not only for you, but for your kids if you have them.

When I went down to Jackson State University and got my degree in Political Science and then went to Thurgood Marshall School of Law and got my Juris Doctorate, they didn’t teach me about domestic violence but while being in an abusive relationship for years in the interim I did learn. I wasn’t ready for this video because your #metoo video rubbed me wrong. But I appreciate what you brought to the DV conversation. What I do want to add is that your friend was deflecting. It was not about a lot of people at her mom’s house. It was fear. Straight fear. We have to realize abusers are master manipulators. Victims are brainwashed and just like brushing your teeth is normal, so is abuse to a victim. I factored abuse in my days. I would literally schedule my day like groceries, cleaning and beatings because I knew he would do it. I became numb. Victims aren’t dumb, they’re just numb and it is now normal. I’ve now become an advocate and have a nonprofit organization for survivors of domestic violence. Thank you for not being insensitive to victims and spreading “awareness” in my best Dineva voice. 💜

I mean, domestic abuse isn't something people voluntarily sign up for and getting out often isn't as easy as just packing a bag. It's not on us to judge the victims for being victimized but rather the abusers.

I told my hubby the day that we met that I dont believe in divorce except for my deal breakers which are cheating, domestic abuse and drug abuse. He is not the violent type but I let him know that if he ever tried me that he would regret it because I dont play and neither does my family. I had to detach myself from a situation too! She would call me crying cause her husband was whipping her behind and I would wake my husband up and we’d drive across town to go whip his behind and 2 Days later they’d be back together. I know it’s a mind control thing but what I couldn’t do is keep involving myself and my husband in the foolishness! We had to take several steps back and pray for her from a distance!

I was in Abusive relationship i filed a police report on my ex but due to the fact his mom was a supervisor of the county jail he didn’t get in trouble. also i had told his mom what was going on and i will never forget what she she said to me “ i don’t believe he is abusing you” i told my family and they didn’t help me i was so broken because i didn’t have anyone i could turn too .. funky i wish i had somebody in my corner like you when i was going through my situation .

I'm in a situation where im living with the father of my 22yrs old daughter ..... I've left him plenty of times just to come back .....there is no real bad physical abuse but plenty of emotional abuse ....so when you talked about talking to your friend and the excuses she gives for staying . ...I know all about it....she is probably like me and is just afraid of the unknown .....it ain't nothin nobody can tell me...i was diagnosed with MS ...a disabling sickness...so yes I'm afraid to leave but I made up my mind to call on God to give me courage to leave and never look back

Unfortunately some women like to be in abusive relationships. They feel loved and the abuse provides some type of normalcy especially if they grew up in an abusive household

I can tell you how. Some people have low self-esteem based on how they were raised and that spills into there relationship ie getting beaten, accepting cheating. Also women have the biological clock so that may pressure them to stay in a unhappy situation. Everyone's journey is different.

With domestic violence, there is a fear...especially when the man is in control of finances. I pray that your friend gets the strength to leave and heal.

It’s so many layers to the dynamic of domestic abuse that it’s hard to logically speak on... I work at a domestic violence shelter and every situation is different.

If you've never been a victim of domestic violence then you'll NEVER EVER EVER understand the dynamics nor feel psychological effects of mental and physical abuse. I honestly don't think you were trying to be judgemental when stating your opinion. I think you just don't understand how someone can stay. Well, it's not easy (nor always safe) to leave either. A year after leaving an abusive relationship I still cringe when I hear news of a woman killed by her significant other or ex. I still think I can be next. I was abused for ten years and trust me there were plenty of times I tried leaving because I, NOR ANYONE decide they want to be in an abusive relationship. He tracked my every move, insulted me in public and sexually abused me. I remember once trying to leave and my neighbor told my ex that he saw me moving boxes and bags. My ex left work just to stop me from leaving. He choked me and banged my head our fence and isolated me even more from my family and friends. One of the last time I tried to ESCAPE he showed up at my sister-in-law's house (while my nieces were present) where I was staying. I did not want to put my family at risk and I fell into a major depression which makes it harder to function or think straight in an abusive relationship. I felt hopeless and like that was going to be my life until I die. It's like being trapped in your mind and you see you can leave but just don't know how to, let alone have the strength to do so. I lost myself by becoming so lost in his life. I was so ashamed to tell anyone what I was going through. Even my close friends of 20+ years knew nothing. I had a gun that he knew nothing of at my parents house that I thought of using plenty of times on both him and me. For about a year I kept the gun at our house and he didn't even know. One day he pushed me off of a bar stool in front of a close friend of ours and that was the straw that broke the camel back. I had not worked in two years but I withdrew money from my 401k, enrolled in school in another state and started my life over. It took me two weeks to make a plan and move to another state. At that moment I realized my strength. A year later, I am a full time student again and I am closer to my friends and family. Not everything is how I want it to be and I know this will be a long battle but I rather be where I am than where I was a little over a year ago. Along with suffering from combat PTSD before even meeting my ex, adding the trauma of mental and physical abuse has been an up and down hill battle. Just because you leave a situation does not mean that that situation automatically leave your mind. With physical abuse there is mental abuse, which is harder to get over. Ironically I am in school to become a mental health therapist lol At 36 I know I have a long road ahead but the decision I made to leave and the sacrifices along with it is well worth it. I hope that you learn to understand what your friend is experiencing and never turn your back on her. There are plenty of resources that are available to you to help your friend. Your friend is hurting inside. She is confused. She needs you more than ever and want to be saved but she is trapped in a situation that we, from the outside don't understand. Much peace and love to you and her!!

My mom is almost 50 and she still lets my father cheat, and beat on her. I've tried so hard to talk her into leaving him and she just won't leave. Her staying with him has taken a toll on our relationship. I just don't get it 😔

I have my PhD in psychology and the domestic abuse hotline told u what I would've recommended. I know it's hard but u can't carry her burden as much as it hurts to stay away. I hope she gets the help she needs (therapy, crisis hotline, spiritual intervention).

Let me tell you Dineva. I was with a man who told me he would kill my children (not me) before he let me leave. I prayed and God created a situation to remove him from my life. And as crazy and evil as he was I cried when he died and I prayed God forgave him because it didn't sit right in my soul to have him burning in hell. Them abusive men have demons that's cant nobody but God remove.
