Progression of Aggression // Swim, Ski or Hammer?

This third video exploring the different ways to rig and present a ‪@ZManFishingProducts‬ 7 inch Scented Jerk ShadZ compares rigging weightless, on a lightly weighted swimbait hook, on a spinnerbait and on a Z-Man Jackhammer. It shows the types of water (shallow and calm vs. deeper and more turbulent) that require adjustments in presentation and rigging. Do you "ski" it, or do you "swim" it? Watch and find out as we target early fall Susquehanna River Smallmouth Bass!
Rationale for being in the “Top Ten Videos” Playlist:
Subscriber votes. That’s it. It’s a great topic, and the footage is good. The concept is similar to the video “37 Choices”, but it addresses “let the fish tell you how they want it”.

I’ve got a super secret fast reaction strike Fluke retrieve that does work on my river smallies here. I’m working on that video now. Great Stuff here Jeff.

I’ve caught lots on pink/bubblegum plastics. I’m curious why they want pink, nothing in rivers here looks like it, not that I’ve seen… Always look forward to your videos, thank you!

I think it looked fast more than it looked pink!

I tried this a bit today on the lake with an 8" fluke on a 6/0 beast hook. Really easy to keep it on top with that much bulk. Unfortunately there was enough chop to mask any fish movement. Can't wait to try it in the creeks.
@TheLittleStuff
@TheLittleStuff Год назад
But you were musky fishing with it, right? The bigger hooks have a lower hookup percentage than the 2/0 or 3/0 fine wire grip pin hook. That fine wire hook gets the fish that are “just testing” the bait to see how it reacts. Most big bass on super pressured water swipe at or quickly mouth then drop baits, just to see if it reacts like a real baitfish. They do not “miss” the bait. They test it. Fine wire hooks sometimes catch those that are just testing. It’s why hard suspending jerkbaits with two or three sets of (fine wire) treble hooks work so well. They catch the “testers”. That beast hook will not. You will need to recognize the take, and set the hook very timely.

Another great educational video. I will give it a try this weekend. Thanks for taking the time to doing these videos.

Right on J.B. Depending on water temp and trend, slower presentations might be better. Both the ski and fast swim presentations are very fast and ideal for warmer water temps. Remember this next summer!

Been enjoying the progression on this technique. Oddly enough, I have a Texas Rigged Fluke still tied on from last weekend, keel-weighted with a split shot that I crimped on. Even though killing it when you have a follower has been mentioned by anglers in the past, with lures, typically it is twitching a Fluke that is recommended, so the bites you're getting with this is rather interesting. I plan on going out, tomorrow, on the Monongahela River, close to downtown Pittsburgh, so I'll have to throw it and see what happens.

Throw it shallow, nose up, moving straight. Is there shallow water in that kind of lock - pool style river fishing? I bet the swimming head would work good at the bases of the locks. I bet a totally different kind of presentation with the same bait would work there - rip, dive, rip dive.

I picked up the keel weighted 3° hook. With pearl 7" jerk shad. Going out this week and trying this.

Do it!!! But if they aren’t into it, go back to a spinnerbait quick. This slowed down as the water temps dropped. Still got em on it last Friday, but fewer than days 1, 2 and 3. A warm up might bring it back full force!

@@TheLittleStuff do you use a trailer or a "stinger hook"? If a trailer, which one. I'm still working on my spinnerbaits game.

That's an interesting presentation on the fluke. I've always fished it like a jerk bait, whether weighted or weightless. I'll have to give it a try on the FL Largies. I've never really given the bubble gum colors a fair chance. I think I crossed that river today on my drive thru PA. The unique set of bridges looks familiar. Thanks for posting.

Newbie question. Why leave the eye of the hook exposed instead of burying it in the plastic?
@TheLittleStuff
@TheLittleStuff Год назад
I like to only gather a small amount of ElaZtech soft plastic to ensure a super automatic hook set.
@Ebowe2002
@Ebowe2002 Год назад
Keep refining it!! What do you think about a small ball bearing swivel on your braid to fluoro leader to reduce the line twist? Keeping it small wouldn’t add much weight and allow you to still burn it. In the “progression of aggression” (TM) maybe a diezel minnow on the grip pin? Still burning it but adding the thump of the paddle tail? Smaller profile though… You’ve really got me thinking as we hit the transition, (hurricane notwithstanding) the minnow bite is on, time to experiment!
@TheLittleStuff
@TheLittleStuff Год назад
Eric, The swivel as the link between the braid and leader isn’t a bad idea. It would have to be a short leader. I tried the diezel minnow on one of the Z-Man BulletZ jig heads and did not experience a good hook up percentage on moving baits. They are great for slower bottom bouncing baits. The ChinLockZ is best for the Deizel Minnow. A simple spinnerbait might be best with this cool down. But if we get a solid warm up, this pattern should fire right back up! Here’s to an Indian Summer!

Any reason this won't work with large mouth and spotted bass? Here in SC the only real smallie water is over an hour away, but I've got a decent large mouth and spotted bass river much closer.

It’s cooled off a bit. Slowing down to spinnerbait or suspending jerkbait speed is a better plan. It got cold fast!

Is the small 2/0 hook size for such a big bait just for better action?
@TheLittleStuff

It’s just what I used, but these are smallmouth, not striped bass. If you play them right, you’re not bending that fine wire hook.
