I was actually there front and center at the Jackson 5's "Going Back to Indiana" TV special live concert filming at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum in 1971 #REALTALK #HISTORY #LEGENDS
Dem boys was BAD!!! Not out of step...harmony sounded great....They were absolutely awesome! I"m so glad I was around when Jackson mania started! I seen them boys twice....Never was disappointed! I sure miss them days! I'm glad I can still watch them! I will never, ever forget The Jackson 5ive! Miss you Michael.
Lamont Pearson Ditto for me too Lamont. The kids who didn't see this show missed out and had to listen to us go on, and on forever about it! What a fabulous era we grew up in. J 5 forever baby!
I remember this when it aired on television back in 1971 when I was 14 years old. Jackson five are fucking amazing they fucking stole the show with Isaac Hayes walk on!!!!
Charlene Dozier I've asked because people tripped out when usher went through puberty so I wanted to know what others back in his day knows what it was like when his voice changed did they think he was gonna be a bad singer as he got older or what ? So yea stay in your lane and don't come for me
all the people who are commenting are right, I saw them several times in concerts, still get the chills,I am now 55 years old , I saw Michael way before he became kingof pop, that sure was the good of days, miss the brothers and Michael thank you forthe good times, your beautiful smile and kind hearted personality so humble ,the millions you gave away you are loved, RIP MJ may Jehovah be with you and the Jacksons love.................you.
+Debbie Hampton There are so many things we are missing nowadays, real talent is really hard to find and even then it does not compare nor neither does it have any of the qualities and dedication. Although, we are at a point in conjuncture.
+Abu You are so right!!! However, there is plenty of talent out here but they dont use it correctly. Too much stupidity and four letter words spoil the talent of music today.
Phillip Burns There is talent out there but it just isn't the same. Times have changed now and not for the better in most ways imo. Totally different world. Things were more innocent and fun as far as pop culture goes.
And playing real tight! And don't forget Ronnie Rancifer was on keyboards, and Johnny Jackson (no relation R.I.P.) on drums! They were electrifying performers.
Indeed, no backing extra musicians, singers nor dancers. Just 5 cats and their two homies from northwest Indiana. They were the real deal. I saw them since the beginning. Genuine talent all around.
That is what people forget the Jackson 5 were a solid band way before Motown, Jermaine or Tito did not need someone to play for them in studio even if Motown choose to.
Jermaine was killing that Bass with that pic @2:57! That's amazing he learned how to play by ear at such a young age with the help of Legendary bass player James Jamerson! He learned from the best. Jermaine, Tito, Johnny, and Ronnie would sit for hours to master a song while Michael, Jackie and Marlon practice the steps. They were and still is big on the band sounded just like the record!
It is amazing how Joe Jackson gets no credit for his sons. They just have natural talent. No formal training. I guess him teaching them songs and routines had nothing to do with anything.
I like these videos because it proves that the Jackson 5 played their own instruments. People often say that the Jacksons are no good because they don't play their own instruments and only just danced and sang. These guys were truly talented for their age and played their own instruments just like the Beatles did and this is back in the 70s. Even today many boy bands don't play their own instruments and the Jacksons sold $25,000,000, before Michael turned 13. Listen to Jamaine get down on the base guitar. This is a truly a boy band, teenagers.
The Wizard Of Og Playing instruments isn't as hard as lead singing.. I play instruments and its a lot harder to dance and sing and keep time while learning a million words and moves. And entertain the crowd pretending to be happy when you're tired from touring and crowds. Little bitty MJ did all of this and was a pro at it. a true pro
Patty Z: apparently, you don't play bass like Jermaine Jackson because the level of sophistication in this 16 year old's bass playing is ASTOUNDING. I have been playing bass professionally for 25 years, have toured the world with several huge acts and have played and sung on gold albums, movie soundtracks, television themes.....you name it.... and and I have never seen any kid play with the command that Jermaine had on the bass guitar. Not to mention he often sang lead while SIMULTANEOUSLY covering these incredibly difficult bass lines. Not to take anything anyway from Michael, whom we all knew was a genius, but Michael Jackson could NEVER have played the bass like that while singing lead. I've never seen anyone do it before or since. Jermaine was in a class all his own
wow..I remember this show. they did this same show at the Baltimore civic center in 1971. At such a young age they knew how to perform live. oh the memories.
*Man they crushed Walk On...💯* My mom bought this album (Going Back To Indiana) for me when I was a kid. 100+ channels, 24 hour tv stations, and On Demand didn't exist. Plus I was only a few months young when this concert took place (Yes. Record stores existed & sold albums that were years old). So I had to listen to this album & imagine what the *entire* celebration was like (they did skits with athletes & entertainers on a different night. *edit* : I assume they were different nights). *The chance to enjoy things like this is when I am truly grateful for modern technology. Without it this right here would still be a fantasy for me. THANKS FOR SHARING*
Wow!!! I remember this show big time!!! I wore several 8-track tapes of this live concert out!!! Thank you for posting this classic gem! The boys killed it!!!
It's true what life's lessons teach us "Nothing good really lasts forever but while it lasts, you had better enjoy it because sooner or later, it'll come to an abrupt end." The Jackson 5 thrilled us with so many unforgettable performances.
I Love The Jackson 5 simply the best all 7and then Randy. My favorite is Jermaine and Johnny, all of them Michael, Marlon Tito, Ronnie, Randy and Big brother Jackie ,THE JACKSON 5 !! Give Mr. Joe Jackson his MONEY!!!
Rick Ross the highest ticket price was $6.50 best seats in 1971. Went to their concerns in Detroit in 1971. That's what the ticket prices were like then.
The Jackson 5 were the truth. I saw them during this period. They were real. They didn't have a stage full of extra dancers, or a bunch of grown men musicians playing the actual music, or a track running in the background, or a group of professional background singers doing the real harmony. Naw, these boys brought their own sound and their own choreography, with only two extra side musicians, who were just a few years older than them. The Jackson 5 were the genuine article.
NAME A GROUP NOW DAYS THAT CAN SING PLAY INSTRUMENTS AND HAVE PERFECT DANCE STEPS?? I forgot there are no groups now days!! THEM DUDES WAS AWESOMELY AWESOME!! J5 GIVES YOU YOUR MONEY WORTH!!
To think of the enormous pressure a young kid would have not to mess up in front of a crowd and Michael was on stage and ruled the stage at a young age and had swag like someone twice his age. Industry insiders at the time nicknamed him midget because they couldn't believe he was a kid performing the way he did.
I remember that year of that concert when they came to New York city’s Madison Square Garden. As soon as they hit the stage, the girl went so crazy, and refused to sit the F down. The NYPD had to sit up on the stage, protecting them from getting stampeded blocking everyone’s view sitting up front...Wow, it was wild & crazy
So much talent for so young ! ALL of them were professional weather playing instruments are singing and dancing abilities ! ALL families have difficulties and struggles Once they grow up . But at the end of each day this family comes together and steps up for one another ! That' is because of it strong father and mother ! You can say whatever you want about joe . But he taught them if you want to be noticed you have to work at it everyday and be a professional ! BACK then parenting was far different than it is today ! Joe had boys and he kept a firm grip on them ! He did what people did back Then . I have to Give credit where credit is due ! It EFFECTED MJ but only because he did not know how to understand his father . But had MJ let his Dad protect him , he'd be Alive today !!!!! Joe Loved him and he'd of fought the devil for him . Joe only fault is he felt like his son's forgot what he did For them . Well , joe it wasn't that They forgot it they' Simply wanted to be they're OWN men . I'm certain by now you have to realize that . MJ loved you he simply didn't know how to let you in to protect him with out oweing you ! You have his children to see MJ parenting skills we're his . Simply realize it And understand it . MJ I'm certain would be smiling if you did ! God bless All the Jackson's for allowing us into your Lives still today !
It's so ironic, Kids in the Neighborhood were throwing bricks at their House saying you'll never make it and look what happened. Also, Michael Jackson owns The Rights To Stand by Sly & The Family Stone as well as his Other Hits.
+Luther Beckett I heard after he died, he was able to get his Estate back in order. He now Co-Owns The Beatles Catalogue with David Bowie. He made a lot of Financial Mistakes but so did Elton John, Billy Joel, and countless others but they perservered.
Hahaha...I WAS THERE! 5th row at the Chicago Amphitheatre on Halsted, 1970. My mom had to fight off the screaming girls every 2minutes. Unbelievable, Mike owned that place.
Definitely think the whole show should be released, i found it very strange (at first) that they did more covers than their actual hits but after viewing the full setlist for this venue, it makes sense now....." IWYB/ABC" was definitely right after "I Wanna Take You Higher" but was edited out. "I Found That Girl", "Who's Lovin' You", "Never Can Say Goodbye", "Mama's Pearl"... all missing from this special, the video to the whole set has to be gold i'm quite sure! i surely hope it all comes back to the surface
Saturday morning? check, Got your P.J.'s on? check, Got your bowl of Alpha-Bits cereal (J-5 record cut-out on the back) check, Layin' on the floor 2 feet from the Big T.V. check! o.k. now i'm ready to enjoy the jackson five! memories ya'll!
Although it's irrelevant, Nadine Coyle of the UK Girl Group Girls Aloud was overwhelmed when she returned to Belfast, Ireland to do a Hometown Show. It was quite an achievement since she got kicked out of the Irish Popstars Group Six when she lied about her age. Six didn't make it but Girls Aloud would go on to be the most successful Group to come out of "Reality TV" in The UK. From 2002-2012 they had Four Number Ones, Twenty One Top Tens and Six Platinum Albums.
I have to disagree with my man below ... " The Wizard ". I am a bass player, been one for over 40 years which means that I know the ... " Fret Board " , the neck of the bass. I bought the album after seeing this show and learned ALL of the songs on my bass.So unless you too can play the bass you wouldn't know. At the beginning of the show , if you're ... " Vigilant ", you'll spot Jermaine playing the bass with a ... " Pick " on the song ... " Stand ". Come on now ...! After " Stand " , the pick disappeared . WHY??!! You have to .... Pay Attention to catch stuff people ... you'll surprise yourself with what you can catch ....!! Just be ... " Vigilant ".
Listen youngthinhoe the Osmond brothers were okay but they couldn't stand on the same stage as the Jackson 5 back in day they made them Osmond go and sing country and western can you dig it!
It's a very harsh fact that they were very likely that talented and disciplined because of the constant abuse they got from their father....Harsh but true.
one thing .back then they wasn't so hot for the white kids , it's not being racial .. michael wasn't teen idol for the white girls. black girls yea.. most white girls back then were into the osmonds,, especially on donny osmond .. as david cassidy as well..
I think I get the humor, but the reality is that black folks don't bother or try to intimidate others in a setting where somebody other than us is the minority. Indeed, in my lifetime (I'm 58) we have tended to go out of our way to make others feel comfortable. Now I cant say the same when someone is in a comedic scene, I mean I've seen the shows on BET etc. But in my experience by and large we get along with folks.
I looked again. They did seem to be uncomfortable. I think that's one of those 'self-imposed' fears. Nobody in that audience was going to attack them or anything (save for maybe one of them young babes, if that white chick went after one of the Jackson 5!).
***** They had no reason to worry. Not even then. The Jackson's were ambassadors of a love vibe. And they were the first young Black people I ever saw on TV.
Brilliantbeing Yeah Michael is my agree. But I have to disagree and say that they looked scared, but there is not was for either of us to prove it either way. The Jackson's were a popular band, not a love cult or church organization. Who knows? Them.
THIS IS WHERE MICHEAL BEAT ELVIS ANYTIME. ELVIS WAS NOT THIS TALENT AT HIS AGE (PRISCILLA). MICHEAL HAS SET ELVIS AND ALL OTHER GUYS DOWN. TURN THAT AROUND. WITH OR WITHOUT HIS BROTHERS. THE TRUTH IS NO ONE TODAY CANNOT TOUCH HIM. MARLON JACKSON IS THE BEST DANCER TODAY.
