Janis Joplin talking about her favorite singer Tina Turner. One memorable moment in Rock history. One Rock queen talking about the other one. Here on Dick Cavetts legendary talkshow in 1969. Also appearing is Michael Thomas.
It's pretty amazing to hear Janis Joplin say that Tina Turner was her favorite singer and that she's the best...wow, coming from Janis, that is very high praise indeed. Janis knows where the power was in that show.....TINA....
It is pretty amazing? Why? Tina's voice in her younger years was absolutely amazing. Her energy and dedication to a song was mesmerizing. She sang the blues and rock and roll as if she invented them. She was the most powerful singer and if Ike had allowed her to be free to do so, was the most influential female singer of that era. Phil Spector at his height as a record producer recruited Tina for a one time recording session out of his respect for her voice. Ike due to his jealousy of her receiving Phil's attention, did not allow any further sessions with Spector. Tina finally broke loose and obtained the success she deserved. Due to Ike's mistreatment of Tina his fame and talent is sometimes overlooked. Elvis Presley as a young boy would sit by Ike's piano at Honky Tonks and learn from Ike. Ike was the best teacher of the blues, etc whom Tina could and did benefit from technically.
@@mvies77 quite an interesting and tragic story with a happy ending for her. Thank God. I love Tina. My grandmother (very straight white Australian woman from suburbs with severe osteoarthritis) used to play me her records and shows and we'd dance and limp around the living room. I wish Janis had gone with her natural ability more than trying to be like others. But as a vocalist myself I know we start by emulating others. I couldn't even attempt to emulate Tina back then though lol. She's the Queen.
You are reaching too much. He asked her who she liked, and she said Tina Turner, she paused because there wasnt anything else to say. Whats cut out of this is, he says, I dont know who Tina Turner is, and thats when she explains who she was. Tina's life with Ike was not known until 1986 when her autobiography was released.
Not true, they never caught him hurting him nor beat him up. Mick and Keith were fans. Ike and Tina were the supporting act for the Rolling Stones twice.
I remember when that show aired. I am a black woman a few months shy of 60 years old . Ike and Tina Turner were always superstars in my community so you can imagine how astounding it was to realize that Ike and Tina were practically unknown to the masses . Dick Cavett had no idea who Ike and Tina were I could not believe it .
@@dd4850 I learned a lot about the civil rights movement amongst a huge quantity of social and intellectual material in his Philsophy n the interviews. Hefner had a very very interesting mind. Brilliant. Many blessings!
@@tigergreg8 So sad to know that white versus black in America are still unknown to each other. That speaks volumes about systemic racism and segregation for decades...
Yes, she grimaces there. Maybe it was to say his talent was far beneath Tina's or maybe it was something about backstage. As an industry insider, even if no words were spoken, she'd know.
So cool to hear Janis Joplin appreciate another musician in their prime like Tina Turner and the host not knowing whom she is talking about...RIP Tina, you might have left us but your music will live forever 😢❤❤
You must not be familiar with Dick Cavett. He knew who everyone was in the music industry and gave them recognition which helped promote them. Nobody was doing that at the time. Dick is a legend.
Janis would be 70 this year. That is so hard to believe! In all of our hearts and minds she will be forever 27. I just love Janis Joplin. In my studio I have all kinds of older Country Music memorabilia... signed item by Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, George Jones... and right in the middle of all of that is a giant Janis Joplin concert poster. People ask me about that all the time, like she doesn't belong there or something... I always say "GREATNESS HAS NO GENRE"
Well KLUNKET, your name tells me everything lol. If "GREATNESS HAS NO GENRE" like your post says, put in a poster of Charley Pride, Ray Charles, Tina Turner, Bob Marley or Fats Domino and look out and hide from the response from your friends ... you may really get some 'they don't belong there' responses.
Janis was a VERY perceptive individual. She knew EXACTLY what was going on between Tina & Ike, and you can tell she COMPLETELY felt compassion and empathy for her in that situation.
@@YogaBlissDance True. She knew she was a pioneer in the advancement of women and also knew that men, specially in the black community, ruled. Those times were like that, sadly.
@@benschaeffer8102 Every nuance, pause of breath, frown, and or smile with people directly or indirectly associated with Ike and Tina is being scrutinized with a today's lens of knowing what Ike and Tina's private life was like, because we know about Tina's book(s) and movie. What I am saying is, I don't dispute Janis wasnt smart, she was, but the way she spoke of Ike and Tina had nothing to do with their personal life. Janis was cool, and thats how she talked. People are overanalyzing the way she spoke of them. Thats my opinion of it when I first saw this clip in 1997 when it was shown on Tina's Behind The Music, and thats how I feel today! I understand most will not agree, like yourself, but thats how I feel.
They would have been great together on stage with their energy. It probably would have happened in the 70s had Janis not taken that dose of heroin. So sad. They did perform together in 1969 though ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Pc_DX3QTq_I.html
Wow, Janis liked Tina Turner so early on, Dick didn't even know who she was yet. Needed explanation. Janis had a great ear AND a great voice. Imagine a Tina/Janis duet.
They did sing together on stage at Madison square garden in 1969. There are photos of them together on stage, unfortunately no videos being recorded to my knowledge . ❤❤❤
That was absolute honesty on her face and in her voice when she said that. She also HAD to have known about the drug-abuse and violence of Ike and Tina's relationship, and had that look on her face like she really wanted to say something to reach-out to Tina then-and-there, but knew that she could not do that. Man, this entire interview was absolutely fantastic.
I dont think she knew. Ike and Tina's marrige wasn't made public until the divorced!! Well into the 1980's This interview was late 60's The World hadnt learned of Ike and Tina troubles yet!!
She was bighearted enough to praise another female singer! No pettiness or jealousy with Janis! 🌷 she was a good person. To think of the one hit wonders now who take themselves SO seriously!! I wish she was still around to show them a thing or two!
She liked tina cause thet both freee spirited and genuine especially janis more genuine than sagittarus tina.. beside their style different, nothing to be jealous about you fool... beside stupid people jealous smart people dont
Her attitude deserves to be called a true feminist! Back then women had a really hard job in the music industry. They still do to some extend. And to see a woman honestly supporting another female collegue warms a heart! The world nowdays still needs more of this!
There was this video where Janis was sitting next to Raquel Welch and everyone int he audience was just floored at Raquel's beauty but Janis had her own beauty and uniqueness shinning through. It was so interesting to watch. Janis was just janis.
I am a 72 year old white woman, did various air work in Louisiana during the early to mid sixties. Wherever I was in life, music was part of it, and it never occurred to me that Ike and Tina Turner could be unknown any place music was played. Maybe I just didn't know everyday people.
Different strokes for different folks. It's not uncommon for an artist(s) to be well known in one part of the country (usually were they originated) and not known in the rest. I can name a quite a few artists like that. I'm sure the Art Rock band Renaissance (early 70's-80's) was not well known or known at all in Louisiana but were popular on the northeast coast, Canada, and various parts of the world.
That's just AMAZING! I bet Tina felt so good & got some confidence from Janice saying that. I'm sure Ike was jealous & tried to minimize it. That's huge. She could've named any artist & Tina was not an A list singer at this time.
Anyone that isn't familiar with tina turner back in the ike and tina turner days, go watch a few videos. You can hear the influence of tina turner on Janice joplin. Tina was incredible back then.
How do you know she was? Lol wonder how old are you now 70 or 90 if you really lived back then? Janis came before fucking Tina tina beside she was white everyone know her then.. however tina never tina turner wither Ike turner deal with it no one knew who fuck she was.., it was gave her chance in his band then she fucked him while he was married in his same house.,.Ike was way famous before Tina for his great talents in music..no i am not fan of like, but that man life way fucked up when he was kid so if he violent toward he got some reason there..sagittarus women very manipulative and perfect liar they make people belive even some not even true.. but no one told her to fuck like while he married and no one told her to stay ith him for 16 yrs.. like said they never even legally married.. she married him on purpose not out of love.. no she not simply best but janis sure was in her short life
TINA was already a HUGE star in Europe and had been for most of the 60´s. "River Deep Mountain High" was one of the biggest classics ever recorded in the 60´ which was 1966 she did that with Phil Spector and the same year went on tour with the Rolling Stones. In America as well she sold out on constant tours. In 1960 a hitsingle with "A Fool In Love" and she did countless appearances on "American Bandstand", "Shindig", "Playboy After Dark", "The Big TNT show", "The Ed Sullivan Show" and others.
@@falconeshield Maybe in the UK only. Back in the 60's the "Blues wave" may have helped to introduce the Ike and Tina Turner Revue, but she will only become a giant after the release of "Private Dancer" in the 80's...
My two Queens: Janis and Tina, Queen of the Blues giving props to the Queen of Rock! And I can tell Janis knew the deal. Ike's (cough cough) the band leader, Tina's the show! ❤❤❤
@@mfirst340 no I was much too young unfortunately. I still have to discover more about Janis.. However we will never see other talents like these and with AI expect worse and a scarcity in raw human talents..
It’s a great shame that Janis didn’t get to see and hear Tina as she grew into the woman she wanted to be … just like a fine wine … she got better and better with age … god bless you both ❤️
Janis not only made great music but had fantastic taste in music too! The Ike and Tina Turner Revue were the most dynamic show. Ike was a talented musician and bandleader, and Tina was an electric performer!
@@bonk2737 There is no Tina Turner without Ike Turner and that's a fact. Ike was an established musician before he discovered Tina. He was talented, which is why she wanted to join his band. Ike can't take credit for Tina's natural talent but he gave her a platform to shine.
prettybashful773 an astute observation, she paused in commenting about Ike, you could sense it wasn't a positive thought ... but then gave Tina the Kudos after acknowledging Ike.
It’s great to hear a legend compliment another legend. She knew early on that Tina Turner was going to surpass Ike Turner and was proven right. RIP Tina Turner.
Diane Byers I’m so sorry for your loss, Diane. Take comfort in the fact that you were a part of the community where she felt accepted and safe. SF is where she flourished, where she felt free. Must have been a wonderful moment in time to be there. I can only imagine. I was a young child of nearly 6 when she passed. Been a fan my whole life. I have no desire to visit her home town because that’s where she was bullied. I do, however, want to see the neighbourhood where she thrived in SF. Have you been back there?
The Queen, Janis Joplin sure was somethin else. Man I would like to talk to her now and ask her about how big Tina got. Tina sold out huge concerts all over the world in the 80's and early 90's. Ike kicking himself in the ass for years lol.
A little too obvious and pathetic! I've had plenty of such crushes myself, but while the girl knew(it's hard to keep it a secret from the girl herself), nobody else got it. This guy sticks out a mile. Have a little class, bitch!
@@singtweetypie They did, she wrote to her sister about how much she hated doing tv, but loved doing his show. So there was a relationship there, maybe he had a crush, or maybe they were very good friends, but he meant something to her
What an enigma Janis was....This clip reveals a certain kind of innocence she had, but when she got onstage, especially if one were to see her in the documentary FESTIVAL EXPRESS, she could be a banshee, a siren or BOTH all at once and in the same song. VISCERAL. Nice clip of her here that shows a real (and very HUMAN) quality the term "legendary" just misses........
Janis supposedly throttled Jim Morrison with a bottle of Southern Comfort at a party for disrespecting her. I am sure she'd have had words with Ike at some point because that is one woman he did NOT want a problem with.
Even Phil Spector didn't want Ike around during the River Deep Mountain High sessions. He was PAID to stay away. That has to say SOMETHING, if even Phil Spector doesn't want to be around you.
My sense is that she knew about the abuse..it's subtle but her clearing her throat and the pause, it may have been an open secret (his treatment of her.) What a powerhouse Janis J was fierce, honest, sadly the drugs took her.
She was gone far too soon. Wish she was still around. I love all her interviews, she seemed like such a soft, gentle soul. I hate how she was treated in school in her home town. ❤
@09201951ful But in the underground clubs of the emerging Hippie scene and the Blues clubs of downtown London people WERE aware of Ike and Tina. Janis was part of that scene. I can just imagine her hearing Tina for the first time and being totally blown away. The appeal of that music was the raw emotion, one felt that they MEANT every single word of it. Janis took that to heart.
he had the most interesting people in the world from all walks of life on his show- and it was on every night for 90 min- nothing even comes close to it today- his stye was to get his guests to talk about their lives- he even had a guy who was at custers last stand
Janis you are sooooooooooo loved and so missed. Only a goddess pays homage to another kind of goddess. Love you so much Janice...your music sustains me still. RIP. I really hope I get to meet ya on some awesome could out there in the great sweetafter when my time comes to pass.
Janice Had it on the money back then miss her dearly too she knew tina was rock n roll hoochie koo. Now you heard it from The source. Miss you tina and miss you janice too. Both excellent performers.
Yes, I noticed watching vids on Janis that she censored what she said, Many thought she was just outspoken, but she chose her words wisely. You can tell she was not happy about Ike but never incriminated herself.
