Im Japanese, lived and worked in UK, US, China etc. A lot of things that you feel or say, is quite similar to what a first time Japanese tourist would say in a western country. Except that the content is mostly reverse.

Yes, I agree. I’m also Japanese (I’m 69 years old) and I’ve lived many places including in the Philippines and the US. Feeling fitting in is very personal and I know many non-WASP immigrant friends and acquaintances don’t feel accepted here in the US. Therefore, it’s not so specific to one country. It is just so easy to ignore that type of feeling when you are in a country like the Philippines as they are more westernized due to its sad history of colonization. Of course, they are more easy going as well. Please try to be open minded as you are. It’s not enough to know a country (even a region) and/or understand its people by just visiting occasionally and observing things. I enjoy your videos as you sound so sincere. We are not as super serious as you think but we cherish sincerity (honesty) and compassion to others. 😊

貴方には侍の刀に見える物でしょうが、刺身包丁の一種でしょう。例えばマグロなどは全長60cm〜3mに及ぶものもあり、そこからマグロの身を解体するには、まるで刀の様なもっと長い包丁も存在します。（この店には無いかもしれませんが）たまに寿司店のイベントとして1.5mほどの丸々とした大きなマグロを店内で解体してお客様に見せる店もありますが、そう言う時に本当に刀の様な包丁を使っているのを見れる事もあります。この動画の包丁店に展示されてた貴方から見ると侍の刀の様な物も、この店はプロの料理人も買いに来る様な店であれば、刺身包丁として売られているものと思われます。プロでの料理人でなくても料理好きの人で釣りが趣味の人は、釣った魚を自宅で刺身にするので、ある程度長さの長い刺身包丁を持っているケースもあり得ます。

Japanese culture places a high value on politeness and avoiding causing discomfort to others. As a result, we tend to keep our emotions more private, avoiding conflict or confrontation, especially in public spaces. On the other hand, English culture is completely opposite. You guys are more individualistic and express your feelings openly, whether positive or even negative. This is something I still struggle with, even though I've been here for more than 20 years.... Enjoy your time there!

Admittedly at this point in the trip, we weren't enjoying it as much as other parts. But that's life, I'm not expecting everything to go perfectly. Although there are some misunderstandings, I think it is an interesting channel as it is the voice of a real traveler. Although you looks like a mischievous child, it seems that you is trying to adapt to the local area. A convenience store umbrella costs about 500 yen. Conveyor belt sushi depends on the restaurant, but the price varies depending on the color of the plate. Please have a good trip and don't get sick from getting rained on again. I'm from tokyo.

I really enjoy walking the streets of Osaka with your philosophy. Hankyu is the most elegant railroad company in Japan. You can ignore the command comments that include some old ideas. I just wish you would eat octopus. Just like the bonito and young yellowtail you ate at the "conveyor belt" sushi restaurant. I look forward to your next video.

Actually I’m not frustrated at all. Japan is very difficult to understand, I love that about it. “Strange” may have a negative connotation when translated. In this way I mean that it’s different, quirky. I don’t mean it as a bad thing whatsoever.

全部日本語だからって飲食店を避けるのはもったいない。Google translationを使おう。あと、日本人に最初から英語で話しかけるのはやめてね。日本人には最初に日本語で話しかけるかgoogle翻訳を使ってね。あと包丁は料理用で、サムライソードじゃない。ホテルの電子レンジは日本のスーパーマーケットとコンビニで買い出ししてホテルで酒盛りするのにとても役に立ちますので不思議がらずにいてください。マックでちゃんとしたものを食べさせられなかったのは申し訳なかったです。ちゃんとマックがアメリカの朝食を再現したら食ってみたいです笑でも回転寿司を楽しんでくれたことは素直に嬉しいです。あと、多分ジョニーソマリの仲間でないなら今後はもっと日本を楽しめると思います。

Hi! Oli :) I'm Japanese and have been living in London for a long time. I really feel empathy for your reaction and also the reactions of many Japanese on your comments page haha. I enjoyed your video. What I want to tell you (I hope this will help you a little), Japanese don't request perfect understanding or behaviour , just want you to try to understand more deeply without quick judgment and we just want you to enjoy your days in Japan. We Japanese tend to have high pride about our quality and manner so I think we just keen to keep the quality. And want tourists to be satisfied about Japanese trips, so some comments complain about you just come from frustrating that you cannot enjoy fully. If you visit again, I highly recommend that you travel with some Japanese who speak English and have lived in Japan for a long time. They will welcome to explain the background of the culture and manners and show you the local deep spots. Or in London you will be able to find Japan-UK community, so you can enjoy to deep your viewing. We are happy that you enjoy your trip more and more :)

31:54 its not usually squid... 99% of the time its actually octopus. "Tako" means octopus in Japanese. If you like shrimp, a common alternative is ebiyaki which is the same thing but with shrimp. If you look you should be able to find Yaki balls with just scallions at most stands too.

I had got mad by mom that don’t touch foodstuff when I was kid. But I think why do it packed? I understand there are each common senses at difference countries. Most of tourists are ignorant and not recognizing language almost.Trip is interesting that gradually finds out idea and culture there. We should know that as a host country. 🎉I am Japanese. If you have no intention of buying something, don't touch the products. If you have no intention of buying something, don't enter the store. If you have no intention of using it, don't enter the karaoke. If you enter a facility without a purpose, you may be arrested in the worst case scenario. If you want to take videos in a store, please ask the staff for permission. We are glad that you are interested in Japanese culture, but please follow the rules.

Arrested.. what a joke. He spoke on the train, this was a social rule that was broken. But entering a facility that is publicly open? If the staff don't ask him to stop recording or to leave then there shouldn't be anything wrong with that. Have you ever been a tourist outside of Japan? Are you telling me that if I wanted to walk into a karaoke bar and spectate/watch people sing karaoke I should be arrested? Or how about walking into a hockey arena to watch kids play? Or how about window shopping in a mall facility, would you call the police on me then as well?

@@user-lv4gm6jr7g This is not a joke. It depends on the situation. In Japan, no one wanders in a karaoke bar without intending to sing. I have never seen anyone like that. Sometimes you do see people wandering in a shopping center, but no one thinks well of people wandering around in that without intending to buy anything. Do you go into a shopping center without a purpose? If it's really bad, the police will be called. I've never been abroad, but that doesn't matter. It's Japan, so it's the Japanese rules.

@@user-rg4sx8rr3q Yes, sometimes people go to shopping facilities to meet with friends. Sometimes people go to look at expensive items they otherwise cannot buy, in other words window shopping. Heres an example: I walked into a Rolex store in Roppongi the other day with no intention to buy a watch, I made it clear to the staff that I had no intention of buying a watch. They were happy to showcase me their products and give details about each watch I looked at. I want to re-iterate this happened in Japan. Karaoke is not a common western activity. He mentioned in the video himself that its not a common activity in the United Kingdom. Oli could have had the expectation to see people singing and enjoying themselves when he entered the Karaoke facility. Here's another example: I walked into a Karaoke bar the other day with a friend, even though I only had one glass of beer and had not real intention of drinking. I found much more enjoyment watching the intoxicated salarymen sitting next to me singing their hearts away. It was very entertaining! If my friend was not there, I would've gladly paid the hourly fee to chat with them. Oli is not Johnny Somali...

If you compare the cost with western country as the US and Europa, Japan is very cheap. You said other asian countries are cheaper, but average of quality are cheaper than Japan. Japan is the most place are very clean, just space is compact. Now many Americans are traveling to Japan, even celebrities too because they think it has value a lot. However your view is interesting that never been Japan before. That sushi place, the place is by color of plates and how many you had them. if you want more special, you can order to chef directly. and you don't know the name of red meat fish is roasted outside Bonito (family of tune), I think. and after order beer is Yellow tail. You should try more different fish that you can't try in the western countries. Because they had many variety of good fresh fish!! And Your friend has very intellectual vision for different culture. Not easy to figure out by only one time or easy visiting.

Yes, pricing in Japan surprised me, great value to quality everywhere. seems things are priced fairly and honestly, unlike in most Western countries. Great insights and reflection from you and your friend. I usually think of all the odd behaviours and manners stems from one thing only, to be respectful to others. Also I find myself agreeing with most of the japanese manners. For example it IS disrespectful to talk in a loud voice on the bus, of course you don't cut in line, or litter the streets. Of course its easier to live in a country which don't care whether you go by these rules or not.

For foreigners, Japan is a place to travel and have fun, not somewhere to live or work long-term. The rules are too strict, making it difficult for foreigners to live here.

Hahaha…my dad and I were so exhausted trying to get back to our hotel, we just got on whatever train we could get on quick. After a few stops, I began to realize that my dad and I were the only men in the car. Then I realized it was the women-only car! When I realized this, I just kinda kept my head down in anxiety as we still have several stops to go. Surprisingly (or, NOT surprisingly?) nobody said anything or even really noticed. lol, such a cringy moment

日本の包丁を「大量殺人兵器」って言ってるんですか？日本の包丁の切れ味が良いのは1500年代の戦国時代があった為、刀の刃の製造技術が向上したからです。今は世界からプロの料理人が日本の包丁が素晴らしいと言う事で、世界のプロの料理人が日本の包丁を買いに来る品質になっている物に対してもし「大量殺人兵器」と言ってるなら、あまりにも失礼すぎる。

動画は楽しく見させて貰ってます😊 １つだけ気になる事が有ります。明らかに購入する気が無い食品をたとえケースに入っていたとしても、手にとったり触ったりしない様にしたほうが良いと思います。これは日本のほとんどの人々が守っているマナーです。本当に購入したい人のために思いやりを持って頂けたらと思います。

@@TT-ub1bs さん例えばスーパーで前列に並んでいる品物を避けて購入する人が多いのは何故か考えたところ、やはり前列の品物は色々な人が手にとって触っているかもしれないから避けていると言うのも１つ有ると思います。手袋をしていなければケースに指紋がつきます。また、その手は何時洗ったのかもわかりません。それが嫌だなと感じる人も多いので買う気がないなら触らないに越したことは有りません。購入したい人への思いやりなので、ルールでもなんでもありません。でもそれを映像で見てしまうと、楽しい動画をあげてるいても不快に感じる人がいるかもわからないので、そうなると良い動画も悪く感じたりするかも思いコメントしただけです。別に強制とかルール云々の話ではないです。

カフェで、最初、ブラインドを開けるのを拒否されたことは、とても悲しかったですね。 (下の人のコメントを読んで、その後、ブラインドを開けてくれた事と、それに対して、あなたがありがとう！と言ったことを書くべきだったと気づかせてくれたので、コメントを編集しています。) 景色を楽しめるお店が日本にもまだありますし、また、内向的ではないお店も日本にはあると思うので、そのようなお店に行けたら良いですね。

😂 youre at the tail end of your trip where the cultural difference has chipped away your sense of self and liberty. Especially in a country like Japan, there's a price to pay for the ultimate level of courtesy and cleanliness. Japanese folks may not understand but for Westerners all the unwritten rules and customs along with the disapproving vibe chips away the sense of one's freedom and independence for Westerners that we grown a custom to.
