Fascinating video. You get a real look at the rhythm of the tsunami, roaring in, receding, and then returning again, and again. It's hard to get an idea of how long the different wavelenths are; in Japan, when it comes rolling in over flatlands, it's amazing just how long the wavelengths are compared to regular waves. Nice job, Matt! As always, hugs to the Japanese people in their efforts to rebuild their homes and lives.

I gave this video thumbs up and yes this is a tsunami hitting San Francisco coastline. I'm a geoscience student and I had analyze data that day and buoys recorded strong shifts in sea levels which is linked to tsunamis. Like some said tsunami are not really waves but just a surge of water like you see in the video.

It would be something if it overflowed into the old salt water bath basin behind you. It’s worn down even more since I was there in the 1970s. Is the old, opened safe still on the hillside?

In Japan the Tsunami sirens are playing ''Run To The Hills'' In California it's ''Walk On The Ocean''

You can’t kid yourself. One of the last places you want to be is in those waves as they are coming in.

Awesome video...this us the first I've seen of Cali that wasn't just Santa Cruz...Glad for you the water didn't surge any higher. We get what Japan got here on the West Coast & it will be Apocalyptic...they're THE best prepared in the world...us...not so much. ✌

California doesn't have a subduction zone except in the very northern part. But Oregon and Washington do. They do have signs all over the place about where to go ...

@jdolaktv What you are noting is the wavelength of a tsunami. Most wind waves have a wavelength from crest to crest of a few hundred feet. Tsunami's have wavelengths of miles or even 10's of miles. As a result there is far more water in the wave. Wind waves, even gigantic ones are ripples in comparison. Another difference is speed. Tsunami's travel about 10 times faster which gives them more force.

If you'd stop waving the camera around, I could actually see what's going on.

No, FTeeelix. This all happened within a two hour period. The water came and went at least three times before I left. This is something you never see regarding the natural eb and flow of the tides. Notice how the water receded enough to expose all the rocks between Sutro Baths and Seal Rock, and then were completely underwater, only to be totally exposed yet again.

The waves don't even sound like they normally do in that area. How bizarre.

You would never know by simply looking at this that, this was a devastating tsunami that nearly 40,000 dead or missing and trillions of dollars of damage and loss. This is no worse than a storm surge, but still cool to look at.

Look at the power it still had after crossing thousands of miles of ocean!!! Incredible!! The Japanese never had a chance!

Despite the damage and heart shatter it has caused. Japan actually managed to actually hold back some of the full power of the tsunami. The tsunami walls unfortunally were 10 meters high, the waves reached a maximum height of 40.5 meters, but the wall slowed it down, quite a lot. If compared to 2004, these 14 countries had absolutely zero protection. 😔

I bet the estuaries had little tidal bores running up them. Could have been fun to surf upstream in a kayak.

After travling 6,000 miles, it's lost a lot of its energy to do major damage.

I disagree, completely, Place a seaside village on this shore and it will do at least as much damage as it did in Japan. Here it’s hitting a tall shore lined with rocky escarpments. The facts are that the longer a tsunami event travels (remember that almost 100% of it is building energy, not losing it, well beneath the surface) the stronger it will be when it finally hits shore. The Boxing Day event of many years ago was FAR more impactful on the west side of the Indian Ocean than it was near the epicentre, just off the eastern shoreline. Perhaps learning more about tsunamis would help your understanding.

🤫🤫 Give your viewers the benefit of the doubt that they can figure out what's going on by watching and listening without your unnecessary commentary. Otherwise, good video (muted).

So a tsunami is supposed to a 10 meter high wave? Nope. Most of the footage of the tsunami shows the waves coming in as a fast surge of water.
