As far as I'm concerned, Jason Isbell is arguably one of the best living songwriters I've ever heard. 24 Frames, Speed Trap Town, If We Were Vampires, and Godamn Lonely Love are masterpieces in terms of lyricism and storytelling

Fantano clearly misses the entire point of Jason in the opening speech when he calls him cliche and compares him to Springsteen and Young. Jason has intentionally progressed each album in subversion to country cliche and thoughtless lyrics. His words are powerfully specific, yet tightly relatable to the individual listener. He doesn't mess around with vague themes that pander to commercial audiences, nor does he ever speak of desire for the "commercial" fame Fantano references. If one was to make any comparison at all, they should call the names of Prine and Dylan. However, if one actually listens to Isbell's discography, they find that he really carved his own name into the Americana hardwood, truly beyond comparison.

Jason is basically a god to me at this point and this album is a 9.5 The thing with Jason is you have to really listen to the songs with intent and pay attention to the lyrics and think about them. You're not gonna get the full experience if you're only listening to a song once or twice. I've been listening to him for 3 and a half years and there are still times when I focus in on a detail in the lyrics that I've never considered before and it clicks, revealing a whole new aspect of the story. It's like reading a novel but in song form. He is a crazy good guitar player as well. It's worth noting that this is the first album he produced himself since before Southeastern. I think he did an awesome job.
@HubbellNelson
@HubbellNelson 11 месяцев назад
The phrase “listen with intent” is one of my favorites to describe music with songwriting of this caliber.
@josephpeters2619
@josephpeters2619 11 месяцев назад
Yes, I think there is this initial level of analysis where you try to figure out the story of the lyrics, basically what is actually happening to the characters if it were to be put in prose form. But that’s just step one, and you have to move past that to really fully appreciate what isbell does. I really do see his music as akin to great literature in that sense. Fantano doesn’t seem like he takes that next step, based on his description of some of the tracks here. It’s funny how often I will sort of shrug the first listen to a new isbell track, and then end up loving it after 5-10 listens. Lol.
@Bo-hb3eo
@Bo-hb3eo 6 месяцев назад
I agree with you 100%. Tom Petty, Lucinda Williams, Jason Isbell. I hope Jason would be OK with this ranking. He’s still got a lot of time ahead of him. But those three right there are just about all I need. Looking forward to seeing Jason live in early March.

Did you see Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit at The Greek Theatre last week? It was a vibrant and compelling concert. The songs "Death Wish", "King Of Oklahoma", "Middle Of The Morning", and particularly, "This Ain't It" take on a distinctively richer, more energetic sound palate live. These studio versions pale in comparison. The songs on "Weathervanes" seem as if they were written to be heard live primarily.

Not a bad review. I have heard similar comments about "When We Were Close" so I am going to leave my take on it here. Basically people state they don't like the rock vibe on a song about a friend's death. When I listen to the song, I hear Drive by Truckers, Patterson Hood in particular. Being that Jason played on more than a couple of Drive by Truckers songs that were about friends deaths and suicides, I think that is what influenced this particular song. Also, couldn't disagree more with Miles. If you have ever dealt with an out of control teen through high school, then the lyrics in the break and change are devastating. In particular "In the name of survival we get used to this"

Sometimes I just want to jam, and these songs were born to be played live. I think "cast iron skillet" was the song that hit me in the feels the most. "King of Oklahoma" is another stand out for me. Another song about the fragility of the working class and how shit can go sideways at any minute. This album hasn't grabbed me right out of the gate yet like Reunion's did but I know I'll warn up to it with more listens. Can you review NewJeans’ 2nd EP “Get Up”? I don’t know if you’re open to reviewing anything Kpop related, but the EP is short, only 12 minutes long. Would really like to hear what you think because you’d be a great unbiased review.

I listened to the album before this review and largely agree. The first half is legit a 10/10 but it kinda fizzles. Isbell is way more my speed than Fantano's tho, so it's like an 8 for me
