I saw this movie when it came out in 1975. I was 18 (Yes I am old!) When that head popped out my friend next to me about pulled out of its socket. The theater was packed and everyone screamed. The movie played for weeks and I saw it several times. That was one of the best summers of my life. Great memories.

16.53..the jump scare which hardly ever fails!!. When I saw this with my parents back in 1975, anyone eating popcorn jumped, causing it to go everywhere...BTW, fun fact: The close up was done in a swimming pool with milk added to the water so it looked like the ocean. The mechanical shark was mounted on an underwater sled and was notorious for breaking down. It was nicknamed 'Bruce' after Spielberg's lawyer. This is THE shark movie, it coined the term blockbuster as lines to get in to see it literally went around the block. Forget the sequels, this is the best.

I believe it was shot in Spielberg's own pool as he wanted one more jump scare after principal photography finished. Spielberg was at the editing stage at this point, but the studio wouldn't give him anymore money for additional shooting.

In the novel Quint harpoons the shark in the belly. The mortality wounded shark swims away. The rope got tangled around leg and he is dragged under and he drowns. Chief Brody is only surviver. He is defenseless. He closes his eyes and expects to be eaten. The shark dies. The harpoon to belly finished it off. The explosion scene was preferred and that made the movie a classic.

You certainly aren't the first ones to feel that way. For years after Jaws hit the theaters, there were millions of people who flat-out _refused_ to wade (let alone swim) in the ocean, on both coasts. It was literally the "Jaws effect". (Unfortunately it also resulted in a lot of sharks being killed) In some places only hard-core surfers & commercial fishermen would go out in the water...people were s***ting bricks over a shark movie while heroin & cocaine were becoming trendy drugs & crime rates were going through the roof. @@fynnthefox9078 well you can find literally dozens of cases of great whites consuming humans AFTER the first bite so i wouldn't say that the fear is completely film driven. Shark stats are the only ones that don't take species into account. No other animals do people do this. You don't see people conflate Bobcat statistics with sharks, yet people do this with sharks all the time..they take ALL the attacks, even from small ones like dogfish and tiny reef sharks and lump that in with the rest. It makes 0 sense. Great whites, tigers, bulls, and oceanic white tips are an entirely different class of predator than the vast majority of other sharks and should be treated accordingly. 1. Goof: Chrissie's body parts are too far up the beach to have been washed up there without a storm. 2. Boy Scouts don't need to do the mile swim to get their Merit badge. It's an accomplishment all it's own. 3. Lee Fierro/Mrs. Kentner actually slapped Roy Scheider. It took 17 takes. Once was so hard it knocked his glasses off. 4. The jump scare at Ben Gardner's boat was put in on purpose by Spielberg because they were having problems with the shark "Bruce" and his appearance was delayed and the movie needed something earlier. It works every time. 5. IRL Dreyfuss and Shaw didn't get along so Spielberg used the animosity to fuel their feud onscreen. 6. Hooper was right. The fish that hit the line was a game fish. 7. "You're gonna need a bigger boat" is one of the greatest adlibs in history. It was the first time Roy actually saw Bruce. 8. Goof: An animal that large couldn't hit the side of the boat as rapidly as it did UNDER WATER. 9. I suspect Quint's story about the Indy gave him PTSD flashbacks and contributed to his behavior after he told the story. 10. I was in the Navy and we were instructed to go for the eyes when confronting a shark. 11. In the book not only does Hooper die in the cage but he was also having an affair with Mrs. Brody. 12. JAWS II is the only other one worth watching. It revolves around the Brody kids and their friends. Including one of the mayors kids.

Enjoyed your reaction so i subscribed. I'll suggest a few good movies that most others won't suggest but i'm sure you will enjoy: Hoosiers, Cool Hand Luke, Apocalypto, The Pelican Brief, The Firm, The Client, A Bronx Life, Deliverance, Better off Dead. Its a varied list but i've watched all of them multiple times and would watch them again.

There is a two hour documentary on youtube about the making of this movie. It has some interest facts. Like Richard Dreyfuss (shark expert) and Robert Shaw (shark hunter) did not like each other at all and the scene where Robert Shaw (Quint) explains what happened on the uss Indianapolis. Robert Shaw was three sheets to the wind. He could barely stand. He never showed up for the scene so they had to go find him (in a bar). He recited his part in one take and then left to drink some more. Only two of the many interesting facts in that documentary.
