Bravo JC, you took your life in your hands to bring us this one. Good to stoke up on that tasty looking Pizza first. You didn't get to the apartments yet then? PP does have a French feel. Crossing the Arc de Triomphe is very similar traffic wise as is Mumbai and Saigon. Also the Baguettes and opening background very French. Interviews with some expats would be cool...Take care out there..All the best.

At the time this video was made, I was living in the apartment directly behind his head. I paid $140 a month. It was huge. My balcony alone was about 30 meters long. It wrapped around three sides of the building.

Great series of videos! The coffee lady kept saying "one dollar, fifty cents" when you had trouble understanding her. She was just trying to help you pay :)
@EscapetoThailand
@EscapetoThailand 8 лет назад
+TheFuzzypuddle Many times when in Thailand or Cambodia, Thai and Khmer people speaking English are misunderstood because our brains are processing it expecting to hear Thai or Khmer. Same when a Farang speaks Thai. Many many times I have gotten on an elevator and said "see" meaning 4 and they hear me say six and push the button for the sixth floor due to their expectations of me speaking English and not Thai.

Wow! That store has a very good selection of American products, and most of them were at or below what I pay for here in South Carolina....tells me how bad I'm really getting screwed here. Great video JC! I'm slowly watching all of them.

The chains for sure have filters on their water supply so I don't worry about drinking the drinks from them. It is the street vendors and smaller shops that worry me. But so far, no problem.

Another wonderful video. Nice work. Oh my, if I'm ever lucky enough to make it to Cambodia I can see I will be paying for lots of Tuk Tuks or walking. There's no way I would drive there, great job arriving a live. Things do seem to be slightly more expensive than Thailand but as you said it averages out in the end. I can't wait for the next video. Thanks for all you do.

Hi. I'm Cambodian people. I think that if you come to Cambodia again you will be more surprise than 4 years ago. I'm sure that you gonna be surprise. Cuz there're now have many tall buildings, big supermarkets and so many things more that you can do.

+Minx Pure There has been a lot of bad news lately about crime against the foreigners. It appears they have become targets in many places especially around the beaches. For people with not so much money and not as young as they once were this isn't good news when looking for places to retire to. I hope this gets sorted out before it becomes a bigger problem than it already is. But for those who can't comply with long term visas in other places Cambodia is another option. I hope to get back before too long to check things out for myself.
@nowyoutap

+retirecheapjc I was in Cambodia from August to December last year and didn't feel like crime was a problem. I hope you come back and tell us how you feel about it compared to a few years back.

Coffe for 1,50. I would buy it on the street for 0,6$ instead. Allso going around in a supermarket with expensive imported food. Well, this can be missleading to people who want to know how much the food cost if you walk around buying coffe that cost as much as ½ days pay in a factory (as this video is old. Now the minimum wage is higher).

They will give back the change in Dollars but sometimes you get a combination of both currencies and then you better have a quick mind or a calculator!! Yes prices are shown in US Dollars. I always spend the local cash in combination with the Dollars or as the change for buying items under one Dollar.

Doron, the prices in the supermarket average about the same as in Thailand. Some things are cheaper and others are more expensive. Remember though that average Cambodians don't buy these products. Only the wealthy or the foreigners.

I thought it would be a good idea in Cambodia to buy food instead of giving money...but it wasn't. I was in a tuk tuk and the driver stepped away for a few minutes when a small child came over to ask for money. Instead of giving her money, I bought her a bowl of noodle soup for $1 from this nearby vendor. All of a sudden, a large group of kids that I hadn't seen in the area came running and of course the lady selling the soup was taking advantage of the situation and started bagging the food for each kid without asking me first. I had to tell her to stop after the 28th kid and still a lot more waiting, some older and didn't walk away without first making some fresh comments about not getting food. Crazy. Based on this experience, I would suggest people give to a non-profit organization if they're feeling charitable.
@EscapetoThailand
@EscapetoThailand 8 лет назад
+GW2 Nowhere When you hear about nonprofit NGOs you shouldn't get the idea that people are giving their time and effort free. Quite possibly at the end of the year they show no profit but that's mainly because of a large percentage of the money that goes to them are given out as salaries. Your best bet is to go around on foot and find an orphanage or somebody doing great work and donate directly to them.

These supermarkets aren't where the average Cambodians shop for sure. Many of the fruits are imported and very expensive. Local fruits are cheap.

Hello, even throw with the new developments; cost of food in markets are too high. The cost of living in USA dollars is a problem. Renting a room or scooter is too high. This video makes me feel that retiring in Cambodia is not a good idea; unless you live in the country side, which language would be a problem. Moreover, Thailand or Vietnam would be the best for retiring.
@EscapetoThailand
@EscapetoThailand 5 лет назад
Martin some things have changed since I made this video. It's now much more difficult to get a long-term visa for Cambodia than it used to be. This is why you don't see me doing videos about Cambodia anymore. I moved Vietnam higher up on my list and Cambodia further down.

In every country at least 10% of people are well off and 90% are poor or in Debt. Cambodia pop is 14,000,000 so 1.4 million can drive nice cars mostly in PP. A lot of those were in the former Khmer Rouge Government just like in Russia today ,most of the rich were KGB connected.

+bajskorv766 I've been living in Asia for the past 13 years, and I buy very few things in a supermarket. Fresh fruits and vegetables are available from multiple vendors right outside my apartment and the price for those products is incredibly cheap (head of lettuce $.05, one fresh sweet mango, $.0.10 etc). These small outdoor vendors and markets is where most locals buy their food, not in high priced grocery stores.

Thanks JC. that help a lot the price at the City Mall market a little high isn't those brand name are from United States ? but i notices the local foods is not that bad the price the Cambodian Government and the big companies or factories they should pay their employee more salary because every things is going up around the world i went to Cambodia 17th times since 1997 and 2011 but i do not go to those modern market i just focus on local fruits and foods because i do not have those foodsoften

this is odd. I dont remember city mall. I only knew of Sorya mall as a modern mall. I am sad I missed it, I like a good mall and the Sorya theatre is very small, only I believe 3 movies and a tiny arcade. Oh well. Maybe I will find it next time I go to Phnom Penh. But really where is this mall? I walked all over the city and it wasnt clear any mall named city mall. Still, if you notice the prices. They really gouge the middle class in Cambodia. I dont see how this is all because of import cost.

Question, how their English over there. I stay in Philippines a lot. They speak English and I can still get a cheap apartment for about $150 a month. I usually eat local foods, that way I am not wasting money on pizza and American food. I have lived as cheap as $600 a month in Philippines, but that's no frills living. Unfortunately, even though you are trying very hard to promote your private member pay website, I don't believ in paying for content that is not professionally prepared and edited. Most of your RU-vid videos, seem to be dated, from 20122, you need to pay attention to them also, since they will created an incentive to viewers to go check out your members site, at all pay levels. Second and even important the audio quality of the videos is as important as the actual content on living in Cambodia that you are trying to market. It would be helpful to invwst in a quality wireless microphone, that attaches to your shirt collar and has built in noise cancelling capability of the distant sorrounding environment, thuss keeping background noise, especially on busy streets, at a minimum. Some of the videos are almost impossible to understand, because of the noisy audio! Hope you will implement those suggestions!
