1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 with 5.2 V8 and automatic transmission. Full info below...
Suspension Info:
Springs are Rubicon Express, 3.5" with 2" spacers in front, 3.5" front XJ springs in rear (5.5-6.5 lift)
The rear is running OEM upper control arms and Rubicon Express adjustable lower control arms. Beard limiting straps are used in the rear to keep the axle from drooping too much. Rear shocks are Doetsch Tech 8000 Prerunner Series part# 8403 which are 32" extended, 18.7" compressed, 13.3" of travel with integrated bump stops. Rear uses a Rusty's Offroad adjustable track bar. Rear drive shaft is stock with no issues.
The front consists of Iron Rock Offroad long arms and IRO 3 piece subframe assembly. This kit has a one piece driver side control arm called the Iron Y which includes both the lower and upper arm in one piece with a caster adjuster. The passenger side uses only a lower control arm, no upper. Front shocks are Doetsch Tech 8000 Prerunner series part# 8421 which are 32" extended, 18.25" compressed, 13.75" of travel. The shocks are mounted to IRO bar pin eliminators. Extended stainless steel brake lines were installed to support the additional lift and flex. Front uses a Rusty's Offroad adjustable track bar with HD frame mount. Front drive shaft is a double cardan u-joint style to replace the OEM CV shaft which broke and also would not have worked with the long arm kit. JKS Quicker Disconnects which are adjustable are used on the front sway bar.
Steering Info:
Iron Rock Offroad OTK, over the knuckle, steering kit. The kit includes a 1.25" solid cold rolled steel tie rod and drag link with 5/8" grade 8 hardware. This required us to drill the steering knuckles on both sides as well as the drop pitman arm with a 5/8" drill bit. The kit is very solid and no steering stabilizer is being used.
Check out my other videos if you want more info on the steering box brace which has been a great addition since I'm running 35x12.50 tires. The steering box was recently replaced with a new one. We've swapped out the drop pitman arm for one that is about 2" shorter than the one we had installed previously because it will work better with my lift and IRO OTK steering kit.
Axle Info:
The front is a Dana 30 with the stock CV style axles, stock gears, and no lockers. The CV differential yoke has been replaced with a u-joint yoke for the new drive shaft. The axle will soon be rebuilt with heavy duty Spicer 760x u-joint axles, 4.88 gears, and Aussie locker. The font axle also has heavy duty Rusty's Offroad lower control arm mounts to replace the bent stock ones.
The rear is a Dana 44 with stock gears and no locker. It will soon be rebuilt with 4.88 gears and Aussie locker.
Tires and Wheels:
35x12.50x15 Goodyear Wrangler MT/R Kevlar on OEM 15x7 wheels with 2" wheel spacers.
5.2 V8 Engine Notes:
The motor is finally dry as a bone, leak free thanks to Joel Gonzalez!!! Oil pan was dropped and rear main bearing cap was removed because the two piece rear main seal was leaking. The rear main seal was replaced and a high volume, 25% over stock, Melling oil pump was installed. The pan was resealed with a Fel-Pro one piece gasket. The timing chain had some slack in it so it was replaced along with new timing gears on the crankshaft and camshaft. A new timing cover was installed with a new front seal to replace the original timing cover which had a hole in it. The original harmonic balancer was cleaned up and reinstalled along with the original crankshaft pulley. A new water pump was installed with a new bypass hose to the intake manifold. The thermostat housing was replaced along with a new 195 thermostat and Fel-Pro gasket. A new tensioner was installed because the old one was nasty to say the least. The original broken EVAP canister, damaged by the front driver side tire, has been removed and replaced with a new relocated canister. A new power steering pump was installed.
The motor also has an MSD external coil and K&N intake and air filter.
Muffler is Flowmaster 40 series cutoff before rear axle. Exhaust setup from muffler to engine is stock with brand new catalytic converter.
Special Thanks: Thanks to my great friend and mechanic Joel Gonzalez for all of his hard work and dedication to Project ZJ. Thanks to Mario for selling me my first Jeep years ago because if that hadn't happened, neither would this project or all the memories on the trails and at the parks. Thanks to Mark and Mike at All Muffler Service for their work on my exhaust and also for removing the stock lower control arm mounts in the front. Thanks to Rob at Les Schwab for all of the great advice and for doing my initial alignment. Thanks to Redline Tire for doing my final alignment and mounting and balancing my new tires. Thanks to all my loyal RU-vid subscribers for their continued support and comments!!!

I did 2 inch spacers to run 31s, then realized needed adjustable trackbars to recenter the axles,, was just a temporary thing, finally did 4inch springs and longarm, due to condition of zj at the time when did longarm also added the frame stiffeners as well as the sliders all welded together which resulted in the result I wanted, borrowed a buddies 33s just to check things and tho they fit without issues staying with my 31s, have sufficient articulation & clearance for how and where I wheel, in my daily driver

This video is a few years old. Canyon wheels ended up on my aunt's XJ. Ended up putting Method Double Standards on the ZJ and ran those till I sold the rig end of 2018. Currently building an 05 LJ.

Looks really good i plan to shave my fenders here pretty soon. Glad to see how it will look! I removed my whole front bumper for clearance it helped alot. All thats under it is plastic and Styrofoam anyways haha

Thanks, yeah, I had my bumper off a few weeks ago and thought about leaving it off but I'd have to do some cutting to make it look decent because I bent part of the metal on a big rock. I'm just going to leave it on and trim some more of the bottom off.

Ryan do you have a vid on trimming the rear quarters ? I have a 97 Zj with treadwright 31's and 3" coil spacers but want to go with a 6" long arm and 34X9.5 swampers
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 7 лет назад
I never trimmed the rear actually. I just did some beating with a hammer to make sure all surfaces were pushed back and as smooth as possible. Don't have any rubbing issues with the current tire/wheel/suspension setup. The trick is not to push the rear back too far when you go to long arms, which you shouldn't do anyways until you've eliminated your slip yoke and have a longer custom rear drive shaft.

I thought you didn't need the isolator if you ran spacers, just checking. Nice zj lift you got there.
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 10 лет назад
Delrin spacers are hard plastic so you definitely want a softer rubber isolator on top to keep the vibrations and knocking noises from happening.

I have a 3.5 inch rough country lift in my zj right now, was wondering if you had to change any of the suspension components to put in spacers also?
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 8 лет назад
+Alex Hyatt Nope, going from 3.5 to 5.5 didn't require anything special but if you don't have adjustable track bars you'll want those front and rear otherwise as you go higher the rear axle will move to the right and the front to the left. You need to be able to recenter them.

Can you post a video on how you guys cut the fenders. I am running 33s on my zj and need to so some trimming for when I'm going off road. I'm just curious how the best way is to go about doing it.
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
Brandon diesel My advice is to use the existing body line as a guide and use tape on any parts where the line isn't present. We used an air powered cutter with a cutoff wheel but a grinder would work too. It's pretty straight forward.

I see Rubicon springs listed on ebay but how can you tell the height? Of the spring do the life ones state the lift hight?
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 10 лет назад
Yeah if you have a ZJ search for Rubicon Express ZJ and look for ones that say 3.5" lift or whatever the height you want.

first off, im not trolling, your jeep looks bada$$. how do you not slam the body on the rear tires crossing potholes and small bumps? just looks like a cut tire(s) waiting to happen? i have a 95zj and am looking for how to's and how much's and where's.... ty
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
MrJeremycb360t You mean how close the rear tires were to the front of the rear wheel wells? The way the suspension works is as the tire begins to tuck up into the wheel well it moves toward the back of the vehicle so it can never touch the body on the front side. Keep watching my videos because the newer ones show how much more centered the rear tires are after going to long arm suspension. You also want to make sure you have bump stops to keep the tires from going up too far and rubbing. Check out ProjectZJ.com to see all the videos in order from newest to oldest.

Wheel spacers? plan on going another 2 inches higher with spacers on my 4 inch short arm lift. what size tires do you think I could get away with before major trimming to my fenders? I have a 93 zj. nice zj btw
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 10 лет назад
I'm running 2 inch wheel spacers on the stock 15x7 wheels with 35x12.50 tires. Trimming shouldn't be an issue in the rear with 33s or 35s except for maybe a little of the plastic bumper, but the front is another story. It all depends on how long your lower control arms are because if the front axle isn't pushed out far enough it will be hard to turn without rubbing unless you do some trimming and hammering.
@diirkd
@diirkd 10 лет назад
***** nice. good to know. I have adjustable lower control arms in the front. stock uppers but plan on getting adjustable for that as well as the control arm since its already drilled over 3/4". maybe this next tax time if I have enough after finding a new truck and new front axle for my zj :(

Hello, I have a 1998 Jeep Cherokee ZJ as well, and I'm thinking about fixing it up. The body is in great shape. It has the Straight 6 with an automatic transmission. I was wondering first of all, what are the biggest tires you can put on the stock rims, and secondly why do some of the Jeep's that are the same year as mine seem to have different front ends? I'm assuming those are XJ's, but what are the major differences?
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
Dean Martin XJ is more boxy, has leaf spring rear suspension, and aren't quite as nice inside. They also don't come with V8 engine options. ZJ has coil suspension in the rear. You can use stock wheels with 35x12.5 tires but you will need 2 inch spacers. It's best to get a nice wheel with 3.5 backspacing and no spacers. You would need a lift and front fender trimming.

Hey Ryan, I put 4 New 31" Grabber AT2's on it. They look great and I didn't have to do anything else right now to it. I'm going to put a 3 inch lift on it. I've seen them with 31's and they look pretty good. Any recommendations for 3 inch lift kit? Thanks for the quick response. I'll try to include a pic of my Jeep in the posting here. scontent-lga.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/p526x296/11165335_10204288784003243_6813130380189918950_n.jpg?oh=31a7a4f3b7eea48abe6c24292fa287bf&oe=55CDBA34

@ryan.vision

Yes, running a D44A in the rear and D30 in the front. No mods yet and no problems with it so far. Doing 4.88 gears with Aussie lockers front and rear soon. Also doing heavy duty u-joint axles up front to replace the CVs.
