In this video I'll take you for a full tour around the AutoEdits Jeep Wrangler fresh off a run across the epic Rubicon Trail and will show you the good, bad and ugly of what an off road trail like that can do to your rig.
Not only will I show you what worked great and what went wrong, I'll finally give some long term product reviews of some of the components you might have seen me install over the last few years leading up to this run. • Jeeping The Rubicon Tr...
If you've missed any of the build up on this Jeep, here's the playlist:
• Jeep Wrangler Rubicon ...
Some of the products I'll detail in this video are the Metal Cloak Body Armor, fenders, skid plates and suspension components.
I'll give a very detailed review of the Maxxis Razr MT tires and Rugged Ridge XHD wheels... As well as the B&M Manual shifter and shift handle.

Always enjoy seeing other peoples builds and you always make an interesting video. One thing is understanding how the bumpstops interact w your travel. Its not just to stop up travel and soften the blow, but also act as a pivot point allowing the drooping side to change its arc of travel and drop even lower once its able to pivot off the stuffed side and really opening up articulation. There is some is some good info out there that further explains this.

Scott taught me something awesome while we were doing this trail. You mention the jerkiness from the Manual transmission. Scott told me to work the brake. light pressure on the brake will put a small load on the drive line and will actually eliminate the jerking. Its tricky and takes practice, its a fine line between stalling and climbing/descending a rock buttery smooth. Im still working on it, but its been a big help on the trails that I have ran since the Modern Jeepers Adventure on the Rubicon.
@AutoEdits
@AutoEdits 5 лет назад
That is a good tip. I learned that trick from an Ultra 4 racer and was practicing that on the technical stuff but the part that got tiresome for me was grinding out those gaps between the rest of the trail... seems to hard on things to drag the brakes the whole time.
@NotICON
@NotICON 5 лет назад
Yeah I remember talking to you about that at breakfast the first morning.I will actually go to 3rd gear if there is a stretch without a hard obstacle.

Great summary and a fantastic walk around of the damage (or lack of damage) on the Rubicon. We are planning on running it next year and this was tremendously helpful You mentioned that you are headed to Moab very soon. We just got back from the annual Labor Day camp out sponsored by the red rock 4 wheelers. On day three we struck out on our own and tackled a trail called “strike Ravine” (they run it during Easter jeep safari but at this event we had to Break away from the group and do it on our own) it was absolutely amazing! Lots of abandoned mines, huge variety in terrain, and very technical, while still being a lot of fun. If you don’t already have trails on your list, I recommend adding that one.
@AutoEdits
@AutoEdits 5 лет назад
Awesome trail suggestion! Thanks so much! I hope you enjoy the Rubicon as much as I did... skid plates and rocker protection seem to be the most important and then just use them as designed!

I must confess. I miss the Raised White Letter BFG's. Uh, oh. I told on myself, didn't I? I really like everything you've done. In fact, you've made it easy for me. You've done all of the research. Great review of how your MC products saved the Jeep. I have many MC products as well, debating on the full skid plate armour next. Living in Ontario, Canada I would probably have to remove them for the winter because so much snow and ice would get trapped in the pans, that it would freeze and damage moving components

Good job on the Con! I have a manual TJ and wouldn't want an automatic. I've been there on the Con too and all the other high sierra trails and I prefer a stick shift. What I notice with automatics is that the Jeep will come up to an obstacle and then come to a stop at the critical point, because of the automatic tranny. The automatic rig then sit there and have to rev up the engine to get the torque converter to engage. This causes too high engine revs for a smooth drive over the obstacle causing the Jeep to drive over the obstacle too fast. With a stick you simply approach the obstacle, then idle up and over moving through the obstacle. Anyway, that's my take on it. I"ll stick to my stick (pun intended). lol
@GOLDVIOLINbowofdeath
@GOLDVIOLINbowofdeath 5 лет назад
Interesting. That to me is good to hear. I got “stuck with a stick” so to speak without researching first cause I bought a 6 month old JKUR Hard Rock edition with 2000 miles and relatively minor damage from the insurance company thru an online auction for a price I could not refuse. Beautiful Jeep. Had some regrets about man pedal at first. Used to it in traffic now. Took it to Moab but was just learning rock crawling and the other guys all had auto trans. Had some lazy spotters at times too and no lift. Got high centered once with waning help from spotters and stalled it several times. The second day they made me go with the easy trail group and it was way too easy. The advanced (lifted) group did a harder trail that day than the first. I have seen several videos of Jeeps rolling over in YT where from a standstill at a steep inclined obstacle they over revved the engine and slid sideways at least partly as a result. They also had bad spotters who did nit keep them parallel to the slope as even I could see. Sounds like what you describe though. Hope they were auto trans. Seems like non aired down tires or large tires or lift caused some bouncing which also contributed to some of the back flip roll overs as well as some sideways ones.

Yes, 35’s are plenty good and it’s so smart that you did axle upgrades! I would say the skid plate system and some rocker protection will take most of the abuse and make the trip actually enjoyable because you’ll know that stuff is protected!!!

Hi there. Do you have any DIY recommendations for the rear hard break line frame over relocation? Now that i have my game changer lift on I can see how the swaybar bolt will most likely take out my hard brake line too. Just curious how you secured it on top of the frame. Thank you!

This has been an awesome series! It's given me great insight on where I want to make changes on my own Jeep. A question though. Is your rig really still a Rubicon? What's left of the Rubicon package? Electronic sway bar disconnect, Rock Track, and the front Dana 44 (and only part of this right as you re-geared.) Maybe you should come up with your own trim level name!

Great job Jason. I'm on the east coast so every one of those nicks and scratches would start to rust immediately. I'm interested in seeing what you do with them. I am curious if the metal cloak under-panels added to your highway MPG. They might smooth out the airflow underneath somewhat; or is it a wash with the added weight? Did you see any difference on your mileage?
@AutoEdits

I did get slightly better gas mileage coming home with the skid plates but I thought it was mostly because of driving a tad slower.

Also with that gash in the tire going through the tread and deeper than the knobs although it might not be openly breathing but it might have gone deep enough to create a slow leak.

If you use the bypasses on the trail how much of the damage could be avoided? I'm putting on the 1.5" terraflex level springs with the fox ifp's on it. Want to do some wheeling but my wife will kill me if I damage it (putting 34/10.5 KO2s on it Monday). I also have a 15 jku am I'm located 3 hours from the Rubicon in the Central Valley.

Did you get any rub between the inside of the Rubi Co front swaybar and the cross member tubes sticking out from the frame?
@AutoEdits
@AutoEdits 5 лет назад
Yes, only on the driver's side and it's done that since the day I got the thing. Keep meaning to grind that down a bit.

Jason, from what I've been watching you have 2 bump stops in the front. Looks like you will be adding one more to make it 3" of bump stop. What is your rear at currently and are you going to add another?
@AutoEdits
@AutoEdits 5 лет назад
Yes 3 in front and I will add another so there will be 3 in the rear as well.

So I noticed that when you did the trail you brought a ground tent. Did you do this because you didn't want the extra weight on the top of the vehicle or another reason? I am planning to do the Rubicon in a year or so and what planning to bring a RTT.
@AutoEdits
@AutoEdits 5 лет назад
There were a few people on the trail with RTT's but I don't enjoy pure wheeling with that weight up there. The point of the this trip was to do some awesome off roading and the camping was secondary.

A roof top tent is one of the worst things you can have while off-roading.

Would love to see an oil change with all that metal cloak under armor. Was thinking about getting some for myself however was worried you would have to take it all off for the oil change.

Ok then! I'll put that on the list.

AutoEdits Check out this oil pan drain valve. Add a hose to the end and you won't spill a drop. smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B003T7XUE4

Not really for the Jeep. Dana 44's couldn't take it.

What size lift do you have, and what did you have to upgrade to run the 37’s?

Hey Jason I got a 2011 Jeep JKU Sahara with 3.5 inch lift with 35’s, in your opinion do you think my Jeep could run the rubicon trail? Did you see any non-rubicons running the trail?
@AutoEdits
@AutoEdits 5 лет назад
Sure, there were plenty of non-Rubicon Jeeps out there. Skid plates would be a must and lockers would be very helpful. 35's are great.

Hey Jason, I'm looking into getting my jeep. It's a 2009 with 90000 miles, is that a lot of miles for a jeep or no?
@AutoEdits

That doesn't sound like that much for that year.

So do you prefer using a jeep when doing Hell's Revenge or the KIA Suv you rode in as a passenger in that KIA commercial you were in recently ..
