Jeffree Star confirms how much he loves his yaks, either as pets or when he's butchering them and selling them for meat. I guess we will have to dive in to his explanations and excuses for somehow being a vegan, cruelty free cosmetics brand owner AND the owner and operator of Yak Star Ranch, where he raises animals for food. I don’t know much about him. Has he spoken out about the issues with the meat industry and called himself a vegan? If so, that’s hypocritical. But selling some vegan products and some not vegan products isn’t hypocritical. One of the big chains out there sells vegan burgers beside their meat burgers. This isn’t hypocritical unless the company is like ‘we changed our ways and don’t want to torture animals anymore’

Like, I'd be fine myself if he said he did this and went to great lengths to give the yaks a good life and vetted the slaughterhouse for responsible handling of animals. If yaks were pets he wouldn't eat them. Because this is what humans do, we mentally divide animals on the ones we love (pets) and the ones we torture and eat (cows, chickens etc.). as someone who actually studied agriculture and animal management, i highly , HIGHLY doubt JS is running that ranch by himself (or with just a couple of other people). if it was a small holding with smaller livestock (sheep, goats) i could see it, but he has fields upon fields with lots and lots of yaks. farming is an insane, intense amount of work that a lot of farmers are born into because there is simply so much to learn about land management, proper feeding, proper care of ALL the yaks, not just the ones he named, protection from predators amongst so many other things. it seems short sighted for someone who’s never expressed an interest in farming to suddenly buy a working ranch and produce not just fibre but also apparently do their own slaughtering and butchering. i understand JS has a lot of different business ventures he invests in, but one that involves living, sentient creatures seems like a poor choice, particularly because farming is not especially profitable. my bet is he’ll get bored/broke/lose a lot of livestock and money in the next couple of years and move right back to LA. (unless he’s lying and has an entire crew of farmhands that run the farm, and he’s just the face and owner of it) i could literally write pages about my thoughts on this. animals are not an easy , relaxing job.

Yes. Amen. I’m glad someone put it out like you did. People just have no clue and do not realize what goes into farming and how much knowledge and planning is required, not that it’s just planting some seeds and picking what grows. And raising animals, don’t even get me started. I am currently in the process of having a mucked up pittie adoption bc of a rescue operating on false pretenses that needs to be shut down bc no one has been brave enough to put out the word bc of one of the beeyotches running it is so ruthless (which I will be working on once the pup in my possession is put in an appropriate home). Just bc an animal has a “home” and wasn’t euthanized, it doesn’t mean it’s good or right for the animal. Sorry, I digress, but livestock and animal farms are HUGELY difficult to maintain and work. It’s a sun up to sun down job. There’s zero chance Jeffrey is doing this himself with no help, especially without any prior knowledge.

By now selling meat, it shows that his previous vegan marketing was exactly that and nothing but that. I'm curious to see if this is going down well with his fan base. I disagree that selling vegan products and meat together ‘makes no sense’. Many companies do this, from makeup and fashion brands to fast food. It makes sense for his vegan supporters to be upset, but not for his meat-eating ones. I’m vegan by the way and don’t like Jeffrey Star. What bothers me is people (I’m not referring to you specifically, but to people in general) considering themselves more moral than a company that harms animals while they themselves consume animal products. I think ethics exist on a spectrum. It is worse to torture something before you kill it, and slightly better if you kill it without torturing it, but neither is ethical. animals are killed on a massive scale despite this leading to environmental damage, worker abuse, and food inequalities that would be much less of a problem if more companies and people chose vegan products over meat.

I don’t like mass meat production but growing up in a small town, I also can’t bring myself to hate on meat farming completely either. My mums friend and her husband would be with the animals for 13-17 hours a day. If the animals were ill she would sleep in the barn with them. She did often name the animals she raised and she loved and cared for all of them. They were sent to be slaughtered elsewhere, and she said she could never bring herself to eat the meat from her farm. She and another local farm who felt the same would swap meats so they didn’t have to eat the animals they raised. There is absolutely no way that this man with his *spotless* tracksuit and jewelled fake nails, is basically running this ranch on his own. Even during the foot and mouth outbreak a couple of decades ago, when we had to change clothes whenever we went in or out of the farm to stop the spread, our clothes and shoes were never that clean after just 5 minutes of work.

There are a lot of comments on this video about how the yak farm is humane and sustainable...where is that information coming from? Do you really think Jeffree Star, whose entire lifestyle can be best described as "conspicuous consumption", is interested at all in sustainability? His makeup line isn't humane or sustainable, why would his Yak farm be? You see the pet yaks well taken care of with room to roam, sure, but most people keep their pets in relatively humane environments. Since he said the food yaks are going to be slaughtered the day after filming, it's highly likely that what we see is a temporary pen made specifically for animals waiting to be transported. What kind of environment do the food yaks live in for the majority of their lives? Who knows? We don't see it. Being humane and sustainable is often more expensive to the business, and from what I've seen of Jeffree Star, he's never passed up an opportunity to make a buck.

I remember Jeffree coming under fire when he first got this farm cuz he had trademarked his farm brand name for meat and how he rushed to ensure everyone that he only did that to keep people from stealing his name and trying to convince people he was selling yak meat. It shouldn't surprise me he's now doing the exact thing he promised he wasn't, but ig I gave him too much credit.

It's funny how I didn't have a problem with the yak meat until he made the video explaining it. It didn't bother me that he was selling meat or that he lied because I expect that from him at this point. But in his video, it was so irritating how condescending he was i.e. city folks don't know what farming is, and people think meat magically appears in grocery stores. sure Jeffree, sure. Then my biggest problem is that it seems like he raises them differently. If I really liked yaks like he says he does, then I personally would feel bad knowing that I am able to give the other yaks a good life too but I'm just not cuz F those other yaks. If he's going to kill them, he could at least make their short lives happy and blissful. But of course I don't know the details so...

I'm usually pretty conflicted about the meat industry because I believe the animals should be raised properly and killed humanely. I think if this was anyone but Jeffree Star, no one would care. Though he did market his yak ranch as a small quiet place where he was hiding out (I mean, "spending time away from the drama of LA" 🙄) and not a business venture. I'm not an agriculturist so I couldnt tell you if the yaks "raised for food" are being safely housed and fed and/or humanely killed, which is my main concern. I will say having a man like Jeffree who is known for his violent and disgusting behaviour towards those that love and support him owning a meat processing plant where he poses in front of the yaks he cares about while others in the back are being killed is kinda on brand... and the vegan lipstick thing is kinda weird. Just based on Smokey Glow's video on Jeffree Star Cosmetics, it seems like he only makes vegan products to sell more of them and not for any moral reasons or dietary obligations.
