Former Jehovah's Witness elder/bethelite is discussing his own personal experience about what he knows about the practices and policies of the Watchtower, Bible & Tract Society.
This video discusses the vow of poverty and how it affects those in full-time service and the impact it has for many individuals that live in areas and what happens when they do not pay into social security.
Is there anything wrong with taking a vow of poverty? No! However, the Watchtower, Bible & Tract Society is guilty of hypocrisy for condemning other religious denominations for instituting such an arrangement. Why? Because when they discovered they could take certain tax breaks for doing the same thing, they decided to set up their own vow of poverty system - Worldwide Order of Special Full-Time Servants of Jehovah's Witnesses
Unfortunately, such vows did not benefit the Bethelites and other individuals in full-time service. In fact, when it was convenient, the Watchtower dismissed thousands of Bethelites from their assignments. Many of them were released after serving upwards of 30+ years at Bethel.
One couple was so excited about being accepted to Bethel and after selling their home, donated the money from the sale of their home to the Watchtower Society. Sadly, they were part of the massive layoff of 1,000+ Bethelites.

They must surely be in violation of tax exempt status somewhere in all of this. However, I am sure they have an attorney on staff that makes it all look clean and tidy. They actually pay people to go to law school then work for them. Where is their transparency to the rank and file? One can't ask questions about these things or they will be shunned or disfellowshipped for apostasy. What a corrupt bunch

They should have their 501c status rescinded just based on the fact that they don't do any charitable works of any sort on any level. Not even at the local level where other churches offer charitable services to their communities. That is one thing that church groups are generally known for. That is why most people don't begrudge religious organizations having tax free status. They actually EARN it buy providing charitable services to their communities beyond simply providing a place of worship. The Watchtower does nothing to justify tax free status.

Ernie Cook I left Dec 2017. I got tired of the constant fear monger, the abuse from the elders. The child sex abuse cover up was the nail in the coffin. I only wish I had left sooner. That “new world” and “ the end never came”. I’m 41 with an 18 year old who just graduated from high school.

They trained my son to be a barber during his bethel stay, he came home and was licenced in three months and now makes good money, however my mother has been a full time pioneer for over 35 years and gets less than 400 bucks from Social Security because she didn't enough working points, so this applies to everyone that volunteers their free time!

Yes I remember the great exodus of bethelites !! We received a couple who was there for 25 yrs !! He was one of the heavy hitters in bethel and was able to find employment before leaving ! Only because he was able to find out before hand that he and his wife will be asked to leave ! They were assigned as special pioneers in our hall and I think this was so that they can have a health package from bethel. To be honest his wife was very very bitter and almost seemed she was going to leave the JWs but they didn’t ! Although on the side this brother would tell me all the inside crookedness of the .ORG ! And told me not to trust them ! I myself been a jw for over 30 yrs and this was the beginning of my awakening

Aside from the victims of child abuse; the couple that sold everything they had, gave the proceeds to the Society, and was later laid off is the most disturbing story I've heard to date.

Anyone asked to leave Bethel suffered this fate. They were given days to leave and no monies to transport them back home. I think there were many who then left the Watchtower, as these actions co tradition everything the Bible teaches.

Y’all, that is where I am right now. My husband and I served as pioneers, he worked and has his retirement but I’m in trouble. I worked barely nothing. So, now, I’m 60 years old and cannot retire like I was planning. My plan is to work full time after I finish college in a couple of years and hopefully by the time I’m 75, I’ll have something. This disgusting cult ruined our lives. The only thing we can do is to enjoy every day the little time we have left as seniors until it’s time to go. We love y’all! Thank you for all the things you do. Y’all helped us tremendously to wake up and send our letters or DA.

When I was 19 years old, I applied and got rejected from Bethel. It blew my MIND! Why couldn't I serve at the house of God? Now at 43, having been free of that cult for over 20 years, I am SO glad it didn't happen! I would be even farther behind in life than I am now! I just graduated college in 2016, and I am still trying to get financially stable. That cult is a nightmare to so many people. It needs to be DESTROYED.

My first year of full time service was also a big ZERO on my social security statement. I was supposed to get 800nok (Norwegian kroner) monthly. They only payed me 500nok "because of the taxes". When I looked at my social security statement for that year is said ZERO. I asked and they admitted they payed me under the table. I signed a reciet every month, but they had two set of books. Tje big question however… they payed me 500nok a month and keept 300nok for "income tax" where did that money go?

I am not and have never been a JW, but I have acquaintances who are. In 2016, I met a couple of Ex-Bethelites who had been laid off from the Bethel of Selters, Germany. What I noticed right away was how they tried, especially the husband, to act as if all was for the best: they were just changing their place of service, Jehovah and his organization certainly knew what they were doing and so forth. In a psychological sense, this is worse than to express one's feelings of loss and despair because it is a severe case of suppression :-(

I was in a major car accident in 1998 while in service, still have pain from it. I was in so much pain I couldn't work and get my 10 hours a month in service so they stripped me of all my privileges!

They are the biggest hypocrites around. I left and joined the military never regretted that decision. I now am Retired and have my disability benefits to live on. I also get my Disability from the social security. I truly feel agree towards this religion for taking advantage of their members. I love and enjoy watching your videos. I have learned so much. I also went to college and got my associate's degree. I also really enjoyed taking psychology classes. You got obe thing right to use your critical thinking when dealing with the teaching of the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Mannix, I agree. J.T. and Lady Cee in most of their videos stress it is the indoctrination from the time one joins the organization. Some stay so they won't be separated from their families, but the best thing to do is to leave, so family can be shocked and hopefully wake up. No matter what, family will always be curious why you left and over time you can tell them. You can tell your indoctrinated family will not listen because JWs are conditioned and trained to refute your doubts and decline the research you want to share. Most cannot take the shunning from family and close friends which is why they stay because the bonds are tight.

They introduced the Vow of Poverty in my local bethel in the 1990s, I was a young bethelite and had no idea what it was about . They didn't tell us what it was about and didn't even give us time to read it , it was given to us to sign after the Monday night Bethel Family Watchtower study , and of course , we just signed it without questions because it was from the Governing Body.

This is the kind of "reality" that JWs thinking about entering the full-time service need to hear! Serving Watchtower at Bethel or in some full-time capacity may seem like a dream come true for some. But at the end of the day, when there's little to show for it in terms of Social Security benefits, that dream can become one's worst nightmare! Thanks JT for that excellent discussion.

Good information👍. When the bethel layoffs happened I questioned my jw mom about what happened to Bethelites I knew. She shrugged away all concern & just said Oh they had to make other arrangements😏. She almost broke her neck to visit Walkil for herself. Brainwashed to the highest power. No thought about people being layed off but building a expensive Estate 😥.

I was in the organization for over 40 years and had no idea of these things...I now believe this goes beyond the excuse of imperfection. Exploited and can’t even file unemployment. My goodness. Thank you for this video. I did a video a Little over a year ago and discussed how this organization took advantage of Bethelites and Regular Pioneers and how so many are not prepared for old age and retirement. You clarified some things, so I am glad for that, as well. Keep doing what you are doing - it is waking people up.

I knew quite a few who gave their youth and strength to Bethel. When they aged, and lost their strength, they were kicked to the curb. Years! Years of service at Bethel in construction, and then when their worn out bodies needed to slow down they had to find a way to find a new location, a new home, a new job some in their late 50’s and 60’s not many get hired at those ages. And all Bethel said was “oh, sorry brothers and sisters, bi-bi.” Like the scripture says “Go be warm and well fed.” But they provide nothing to these individuals. The reason many believed the “Permanent Member of the Bethel Family” idea was because there were many at Bethel who had done just that. They had gone to Bethel at a young age and were being care for, some even up until their death. What changed? The members of the governing body. And WOW!!! “Worldwide Order of Special Full-Time Servants of Jehovah’s Witnesses”! ? Really!!! What’s next the governing body is infallible? Or wait! They already believe that... Think about it... So maybe next is celibacy, hmm, yeah they’ve already failed at that too. These people do NOT represent who the Lord honestly is, Jesus is so much more then they will ever know and that is sad 😔 because they will loose out and cause many others to loose out too.

Had to comment! This is so, so sad 😞 This is REALITY people, wake up & smell the coffee! Little anecdote - my PIMI husband is an excellent construction worker. Someone apparently submitted his name to International Construction committee (a little nudge to stop thinking about himself, I guess & contribute his talents to WT). He showed me this very CONTRACT (my wording, as that is how I considered this!) . I Wanted to know WHO RECOMMENDED HIM, as it had been 10 years that I travelled back & forth from Québec - Alberta (personal work & means of making a living) & I was fed up! His only reply was “it doesn’t matter who recommended me, THIS IS A PRIVILEGE!!!!!” Privilege my @$$!!! ONE OF THE MANY REASONS I was starting to feel confined , restrained, suffocating, oppressed within this so called brotherhood! OK rant is over, feel a whole lot better!!! Keep them coming JT. Keep it REAL, we so appreciate it ! 🇨🇦

I am feeling the same although I am nor out (I am fading) my husband is very in and I am still feeling the pressures and burdens from having to carry his half of the load. I still have to help organize him, and do chores he has no time for, etc. and I am totally fed up but I am trying to cope so they do not destroy my marriage. Observant Deprogrammed I thank you for your comment! I stayed back in our home in Québec for 2 years.(as I had been struggling for the past 6 years with all the BS inherent to all JW fellowship). However, he returned to Alberta for work, (first of those years) disregarding the COUNSEL to try to find work here, which resulted in his losing his PRIVILEGES as an elder!! (No longer a good example). The second year was when I dared listen to A&E “Cults & Extreme Beliefs” on CSA. I was done! I could no longer defend this organization. We spent 2 months together after I disassociated myself. Upon his return, second time around, we were very distant, with each other, without going into great detail, I came to the conclusion that perhaps this religion was all we ever had in common! A sad state after 33 years of mariage! However, I’m stronger than I ever imagined. Trying hard to deal with the many more changes & challenges left to deal with. Everyone has a story eh?!!!

The history and background of this religion is satanic so the demons receive sadistic pleasure when we suffer. I am sorry to hear that your husband is so indoctrinated that he would put strangers above his family, but this is what they do, I saw myself travelling the same road you are on, and I had to come up with my own strategy to save my relationship with my husband and my marriage so the devil does not win. I hope that you can find ways to have what you enjoyed before the cult took control.

JT, just want to say again how very thankful I am for you, Lady Cee and this channel. You guys manage to avoid the emotional pitfalls of many other xjws and some channels who unfortunately become mired in anger and pain after exiting. They never heal or move on. All of us survivors are acquainted with the anguish we face after we learn "the truth about the truth." But the way to healing is clear-sighted focus and rational, critical thought. Sure, we still might have to punch a pillow every now and then, or have a good sob session, but ultimately we got to get up, wash our faces, put on our critical thinking and move through the fog. (Yes I bought the book a couple of years ago after you guys recommended it!) We can move on, get educations, careers, lives. I already knew about the tragedy of the sudden shocking Bethel and other layoffs, but wasn't aware of the SSA situation for them. They've lost their safety net. It's unconscionable that the WTS did NOTHING to help these people prepare for their expulsion before or after it happened.

We had to sign a vow of poverty when we were in the international construction work back in the 1980’s Argentina and Greece. It’s true, we were considered “special full-time servants”. I was in full-time service for 15 years. Yeah, apart of the 1%, sigh....

yes, Donna, the gov body should sign a vow of poverty and even if they did, they would still have control of millions of dollars at their disposal as they see fit. They may tell you they have also signed one, but really, with power over all that money, it would be impossible to be truthful if they were to say they also signed one.

When I became jw at the age of 14 , I was poor as anybody can be.there was no hope of ever getting out of poverty ,cause one's not supposed to think about material things.i remember knocking on doors of beautiful houses ,and feeling ridiculous ,,I was there asking them to become jw ,so they could become poor as me?? ...

Nice to see you again JT. Very interesting stuff about Bethel. I always used to wonder what happened to the old Bethelites, now I know. Kicked to the curb like yesterdays newspaper. So sad, the more I learn about the organisation the more I realise that my decision to get out was valid. Now if I can just get my parents to see the light, HA, no chance, they're welded on tight, it's just not going to happen. It's hands over ears and La la la la la la la la.......

I remember not looking at our group as a religion. I remember a picture in a publication that had a JW holding a picket sign that said “religion is a snare and a racket”. Suddenly, and without any formal announcement, we seemed to be referring to ourselves as a religion. Why? Tax status. Thank you for covering this topic. I heard Lloyd Evans referring to the Order of whateveritwas, and I was wondering when this happened. I left in the early 90s (although I was PIMO before then) and didn’t know anything of an “Order” arrangement.

Thank you for what you do. As a unbaptized individual raised in that religion I enjoy your shows. I left and never turned back at 18 but I still had many family members stay in the cult. After watching several of your videos in the past 3 weeks I think you would be an excellent Pastor. I enjoy watching Pastor Creflo Dollar and his way of teaching is similar to yours very honest and caring and factual.

a few brothers and sisters in my congregation, recognizing my capacity for academics as a child, suggested that i explore bethel in my near future. to them and many other witnesses, bethel was regarded as the intellectual and spiritual hub of the organization. but by high school i had already found the "society's" teachings to be irredeemably problematic, and reasoned that my aspirations would be best realized by pursuing higher education. i recall rank-and-file witnesses insist that "the end" would arrive "soon" - perhaps before i graduated from high school or college - suggesting that my choice would be for naught. that was over 20 years ago, after which i went on to have a rich university experience that has since shaped my life's trajectory. i hope that current witnesses listen to jt and ask questions about their future before making commitments based on the received wisdom of others in their congregations. had i followed the society's guidance, i am sure that i would have struggled to emerge from the poverty of my childhood (our family relied on government assistance to make ends meet), while likely suffering a score of other miseries. entrusting one's entire life to any single person or entity is too great (and foolish) a risk...

Jt, your explanation and uncovering of the vow of poverty somehow motivated and inspired me to finally cancel my monthly donations to this stingy and greedy organization. I immediately felt pity for all the former bethelites (I know many personally) who either left or got the boot with absolutely nothing for their future. All that time, dedication, and sacrifice only to be kicked to the curb. Crazy to think I once had a goal of working there 🤯 I thank you guys immensely for the work that you do. Thinking critically has really opened my eyes and in effect saved my life. Therefore it is this sort of activism and public service that truly is saving lives. Growing up as a Witness I was always encouraged to go into the full time service by the congregation. Thank god my parents didn’t push that on me and my siblings. Bad enough that we were not able to further our education. As a kid even, I was not having it. I always had doubts about the organization and the teachings. I am angry though that every single person (except the higher ups of course) affiliated with the Witnesses have in one way or another been injured by this “religion “. I want to see them go down in flames!!

Remember they don’t truly know God, they know nothing about Jesus. If/when you leave or even before, get to know who Jesus really is. Read a Bible - not the one put out by the Jehovah’s Witnesses, but a real Bible. Jesus is so much more then they believe. We have salvation because of all HE did, not because of anything we can do.

I remember when I was studying the sister told me I need to find a different job from driving a truck. I told her are you going to pay my bills? I never understood there logic. I had told my friend who was raised as a child a JW that it was inconsistent they way the organization was all over he no it’s not. I told him he had to think critically he he doesn’t have to. I shook my head & hung up the phone. His wife went to college to be a teacher I don’t understand how do you not have a critical thought going to college & I never had a higher education. That baffles me.

I remember the first time I heard the words “The Religious Order of Jehovah’s Witnesses”, I was really disturbed. I never mentioned it to anyone, but it was very odd to me. Especially since I had done a lot of research on fraternal orders like Freemasons, Rosicrucians, etc.

J.T, as you indicated, the primary reason the Society made the change to have Bethelites & other full-time servants like Circuit Overseers, District Overseers, Special Pioneers, etc., sign this vow of property, was to avoid paying into the social security fund as an employer. In the U.S., all employers are required to pay 6.2% of total salaries, wages and other compensation into the social security fund. This 6.2% would have benefited each of the full-time servants social security account, and the associated income would have been reflected on each of their social security benefit statement. As an Ex-JW and current Accountant, I know that the Watchtower organization deliberately lies to its “rank and file” members to hid the true intent of their policy changes. For example, in 1990 when they changed the policy to ask for a specific price for their literature, such as $0.25 for their Watchtower & Awake magazine, to placing the literature on a donation basis, this change was done so that the money given for the literature could not be taxed as income, but it could be treated as a donation or contribution. Thus, the Society could avoid paying any sales or income taxes on this money. However, the Organization told its members that this change was made to make the literature more available to people and to make the Organization more different from other religions.

Today has been a bad day for me watching ex-Jehovah’s Witness videos. One was sad and this one has me mad and upset. Watchtower has ruined a lot of people’s lives from the very beginning to the present. Has there ever been a generation of the watchtower that has not been a victim of flip flop doctrines and failed prophecy?

It's nice to see so many others are watching your older videos, too. I love the practical content and the ease of presentation. I never went to Bethel, but this video triggered a pit in my stomach for every betrayal I experienced and am experiencing (as a shunned family member) at the org's hand. Thank you for what you bring to the healing process.
