Jester is "The Cleric" - Critical Role (Campaign 2) 

Hey All, I am glad you are enjoying the video, I had a lot of fun making it. Please keep in mind this is all in good fun and simply highlighting a running gag amongst the cast. My favorite Jester "cleric" moment was the time she used her foot to cast cure wounds because she couldn't be bother to reach down

The funniest thing about this is that Laura probably did more healing as Vex the Ranger than as Jester the cleric

The rest of the party: “You’re the cleric, you’re supposed to heal people.” Jester, the glorified archfey warlock: “I’m supposed to what?”

Laura didn't lose Vex's greed for money, she just coverted it into greed for spell slots

Jester when it comes to having to cast healing spells has the same energy as Vex having to spend money.

Whenever I think of jester and healing I think “I could heal you or I could murder the person killing you”

"I'm THE cleric?!?" was when I first knew I was going to love Jester

I think Jester and Caduceus being in a party together actually highlights why Cleric is such a strong and versatile class in 5E. You can fill a whole slew of roles if you specialize right with your domain and prepared spells, and really augment to your specific playstyle. With Cad joining the party, she’s actually able to hone in on DPS, Debuffing and Crowd control, while Caduceus can do Sustain and Healing. It’s no wonder the Mighty Nein are such a pure unit when you have a main healer and a battle healer at the same time. It’s also nice that it gave Laura the chance to actually play her way. You could tell Pre-Molly that she was frustrated in her limitations. In campaign 1, her original choice was Rogue, but she allowed Liam to take it(or I think he got first dibs), then with Campaign 2, she was originally gonna be a pact of the tome Fey warlock, but since Travis wanted to be one really badly she opted out of that too. Both times though that has actually given her an interesting story addition, such as Trinket or Artagan being a complicated deity/patron relationship. I think it’s worked out but I hope she gets first pick for sure next Campaign. As a side note, it is interesting that according to CritroleStats, Cad has double the average healing of Jester, but jester has been responsible for all but 1 resurrections, and pulled off that wild feat of sewing back together the sage of Cad’s family, without breaking them and bringing them back to life. So she’s most definitely a lifesaver.

My favorite was Episode 101 when Jester has no healing spells left and casts Healing Word on Cad, yelling "Get better!" at him.

I totally get Laura's frustration, the Cleric has such an awesome offensive spell list, and it can feel confining to be reduced to "Need heals plz".

Honestly Laura really wanted to play a Fey Warlock. She only played a cleric because Travis chose the Warlock

I love how when it finally came up in Campaign 3 with Sam, Laura just let loose: "You're a CLERIC without a HEALING SPELL prepared. Whaaaaaaaaaaaat?"

I hope Laura plays a Sorcerer at some point. Not only can they put up big damage, which she loves to do, but she'd make many a meal out of Subtle Spell. Edit: I'm watching C3. I know about her C3 character. So do the full dozen people that commented to tell me that my wish was fulfilled.

I feel like it's glossed over too much, but Sam's outrage at laura's shitting on Healing Word. Scanlan cast healing word or inspiration nearly EVERY round. Scanlan's healing words were clutch as hell in the last campaign. Sam was offended for a spell that he used near constantly to great effect.

One of my favorite moments is when they were fighting a monster and Caleb almost died and ended up killing the monster, but the whole time he was running away questioning why neither of the clerics were healing him 😂

My DM actually cleared this up recently for our table without even watching CR, although he has seen some of it. This was just a "general rule" type of observation. To paraphrase, be basically said: I've seen you guys, and loads of other players over the years rely so much on healing magic that you are hoarding potions. You do realize the point of potions of healing in a group like yours is so the MAGIC can be conserved, not the other way around right? I never thought about it that way for some reason, but he's proven right. Now that we're all using our potions first and magic second, our cleric has been WAY more effective in the other areas and made for a much more diverse character for them to play.

The editing on this is really well done - from the Sam/Tal conversation splitting to reveal Laura in the middle to the little circle insets of the rest of the cast laughing along, I appreciate what you've achieved!

I always laughed at jester being so reluctant to heal people, but now that I'm playing the sole cleric in a group of 7 players at 2nd level, it's so frustrating - I can heal or attack. If I heal, I can't deal damage 😭and I'm the only person in my party who's played before, so lots of squishy characters are just RUNNING INTO COMBAT with low AC/low HP so it's a hectic time.

This just makes the moment of when she heals Fjord better and funnier, and he says "She loves me!" XD

Honestly, having a cleric who isn't super excited to heal and wants to cause damage is hilarious. Laura plays it so well. She revives when it's important, the whole RP of Jester is genius tbf. Also: fantastic editing 👏

This supercut has inspired me to play a healer who only uses Spare the Dying and Prayer of Healing to restore health. 1st level spells is for truly useful spells, like Create Water or something.

As a 25 AC forge cleric I feel this. You've got so many good spells, and you gotta balance between what the party needs and what the situation calls for. Revivify is the cleric tax, and Cure wounds, healing word are pretty good. Heal and Mass Heal are too good to ignore. Lesser and greater restoration saves lives. Then all your concentration buffs.

Every moment Jester refuses to be "The Cleric" is a moment Travis must think about what he says or end up sleeping in the couch

People mock her, but being a Cleric doesn't auto make you the healer, there are only some subclasses like Life Cleric and Grave Cleric that are really that good at being a healer and if you ask any of the really hardcore players they'll tell you that healing in 5e is inefficient, it's better to prevent future damage to the party and deal damage to the enemy than it is trying to outheal the damage they're taking.

The Mass Heal during the Uka'toa fight was the redemption moment for this entire compilation.

I feel this SO hard. First time laying 5e, I play a War Cleric just to spice up my usual class routine. Usually I like playing the classes that encourage you to get up in the enemy's face and bring down the mighty hammer. I thought if I played a Cleric it would teach me to appreciate the healers that've kept me alive thus far. The Warlock, WIzard, and Artificer have to *physically* pull me back from the front lines and remind me I have spell slots for healing when all I wanna do is hit people with my giant maul. D': The Monk this campaign is getting all the action because his AC's really freaking high and he nullifies flanking against him.

The music transition when beau handed jester the healer’s kit KILLED me, you need to win some sort of award for this comedic genius

Knowing what happens in the one-shot, watching this is just so refreshing to recall Jester THE Cleric

I'll be honest, while I was a divine sorcerer, I was the parties go to healer and I get Laura so much. I can heal you, or I can kill the baddie with this fireball. Just dodge it.

I know that like Clerics are not like "designated healer" even though they have access to the most healing spells but also, I love that Laura is so *resigned* to healing every time she has to and so *disgusted* that she has to and how Sam just rags on her xD "I don't have any healing spells other than Cure Wounds, though." "You're a cleric?!" I also love that at least one time, Laura didn't prepare a single healing spell.

IMO all the heat on Jester not being a good healer is just because people are way too affixed. Three part explanation, SPOILERS ahead, especially to Ep 90+ onwards: A. Laura again had to settle for a class she didn't want to take. C1 she wanted to play the Rogue, this time she wanted the Warlock. I guess both times she opted for taking some elements of what she wanted to do, but with a different class. This time having some "Rogue like" features with a trickery domain and having an Archfey as her "God". Specifically in C2 she didn't want to play the healer, so she just didn't play one. B. Laura did use to Jester's and the M9 advantage many of her subclass abilities, sometimes to utter perfection. Think of the many times M9 made the group stealth check and avoided some trouble thanks to her Pass without Trace spell. Many utility spells providing crucial information (Sending, Scrying, Commune), some clutch non-damage spells in encounters (Banishment, Polymorph) and of course that legendary Modify Memory spell. She's using the Trickery Domain abilities very creatively and wisely, so it would be wrong to say that she isn't a good Cleric. She's just not a heal bot. C. Most importantly, D&D is played for FUN. Critical Role is such a success because they are committed to this idea. They're not trying to build the optimal build of every class, picking the best subclasses, etc. so they could "beat the DM". They aired more than 250 RPG sessions (including one-shots) and still keep going. They're so fun to watch because they enjoy playing with each other (OK, having a DM like Matt Mercer surely helps), and that's because they don't necessarily do the optimal choices, as they rather take the scenic route. Jester is a fun character. She is pretty much the leader of M9 and the main reason for them being the craziest sh*t show ever. They're not your regular bunch of heroes, and that's the beauty of this campaign.

Coming back to this seeing Laura get her revenge on FCG/Sam

After a certain point, it makes sense to just make sure people get back up from 0 than trying to keep them from getting there. My general rule of thumb: heal the melee people when they get low because they're the front line defense for the squishy casters, everyone else can hit 0 and be popped back up because their movement being halved won't kill their turn. Jester wasn't being a bad cleric, she was a trickery domain cleric and their focus isn't on healing. Cad was a grave cleric, which is 1 of literally 2 subclasses for cleric that are healing focused.

As a guy who actually likes playing a cleric, healing and buffing the party, Jester sometimes hurts my soul. I felt it SO much when Taliesin was mildly panicking looking at Laura because she was about to launch a big attack instead of healing an almost dead Bo...

What's funny is Jester is right, at least in 5e. Healing isn't always very efficient so doing other things is very valuable. It's an Overwatch quote but I think it applies here too, "It's called Support, not Healer." It sucks that there's so many expectations inhirently tied to "THE Cleric" for so many, bc they can be monsters and the best support out there at the same time, way more than just healing.

Honestly I love how versatile cleric is. You can totally go “fuck healing” and just nuke or bash enemies penemies

It's really apparent how much 5e has changed the way a cleric is perceived or is supposed to be percevied vs the traditional Final Fantasy White Mage or MMO healer. Yeah they are a support class, but support does not always mean healing. Based on your domain of choice, you could fill in different roles.

The journey to her recent character growth is still one the funniest things. "I'm THE cleric."
