She’s a healer but also like a badass healer y’know so she can like hit things and heal things at the same time…
Jester being a reluctant cleric is one of my favourite running gags so I wanted to compile all the times she wasn’t too keen on the whole healing thing. I hope you enjoy and please share it around if you do!
(A few of the clips are very low resolution because they were captured from the mini-cams during a battle scene!)
___
Had sometime off from editing but slowly getting back into it! Thanks for sticking around and supporting me, I really appreciate it and hope to have a few more videos by the end of the year!

Hey All, I am glad you are enjoying the video, I had a lot of fun making it. Please keep in mind this is all in good fun and simply highlighting a running gag amongst the cast. Remember it is their game and they can all play how they like. Anyone commenting hurtful or disrespectful things about the cast or other commenters will be removed. Let's keep it friendly :)

This is more true than most people may realize. The maths of D&D works out in a way that damage prevention is *much* more powerful than healing the damage taken. If you can get a shield spell that shields you from up to X or a healing spell that heals up to X - always take the shield.
@makaylakraus1897
@makaylakraus1897 3 года назад
@@QemeH It is very true, but just amusing when Beau is downed and Jester very reluctantly heals her. There is a reason they wait for people to go down before they get healed during battle, and it is that math factor. Can't keep up with damage delt in most cases with most healing classes.

Here's the break down: Vex only casted 48 cure wound which were low level (due to being a ranger) and 2 lesser restoration and 17 potions (mostly for herself) while Jester has already done 1321 hp of healing (including 79 cure wound 2 prayer of healing 1 mass healing word 1 mass cure wound) during this campaign not to mention other status removal like the greater restoration to remove petrification or revivify to raise Cad. What's impressive however is that Cad with about 22 episode less already did almost 4 times that. Keep in mind that campaign 1 rules were different too which allowed people to heal much more easily. Potions were a bonus action and you could cast 2 spells within a turn. But she most likely healed more than Scanlan who used about as much healing word as she did cure wound (surely at higher level but it's 1d4 vs 1d8) and she most likely healed close to as much as Pike due to Ashley being Ashley (meaning being here half the time like she is in campaign 2).

@@stingerjohnny9951 optimized play, for the most part usually coincides with most character's motivations and actual reactions to the events occurring in combat. generally speaking, optimization will rarely lead you to a bad situation unless your DM is pissed that you are optimizing and punishes you for it. and to that end i mean there IS a line. let's say, for example, your character is married to another character, pc or npc, and that other character goes down, the normal reaction shouldn't be, "i'll just hold off the enemy long enough for someone to get them up". that would be the optimized way to do it, but your character wouldn't do that, they'd fucking take off towards their spouse and shove a healing pot down their gullet. optimization is alright, but it shouldn't come before story telling imo.

I think Jester and Caduceus being in a party together actually highlights why Cleric is such a strong and versatile class in 5E. You can fill a whole slew of roles if you specialize right with your domain and prepared spells, and really augment to your specific playstyle. With Cad joining the party, she’s actually able to hone in on DPS, Debuffing and Crowd control, while Caduceus can do Sustain and Healing. It’s no wonder the Mighty Nein are such a pure unit when you have a main healer and a battle healer at the same time. It’s also nice that it gave Laura the chance to actually play her way. You could tell Pre-Molly that she was frustrated in her limitations. In campaign 1, her original choice was Rogue, but she allowed Liam to take it(or I think he got first dibs), then with Campaign 2, she was originally gonna be a pact of the tome Fey warlock, but since Travis wanted to be one really badly she opted out of that too. Both times though that has actually given her an interesting story addition, such as Trinket or Artagan being a complicated deity/patron relationship. I think it’s worked out but I hope she gets first pick for sure next Campaign. As a side note, it is interesting that according to CritroleStats, Cad has double the average healing of Jester, but jester has been responsible for all but 1 resurrections, and pulled off that wild feat of sewing back together the sage of Cad’s family, without breaking them and bringing them back to life. So she’s most definitely a lifesaver.

With Cad on the party? Absolutly, since someone else will pick up the slack. It worked well for Vox Machina as well, since Pike was often not with them except for major shit, the strategy to kill it first and fast and use minor healing to get people who are knocked out worked. But BOI did it show that it was not sustainable for the M9. Everyone was squishy damage dealers/debuffers and the only proper healer was...well...Jester. That, at early levels when options are limited was asking for shit to happen.

Zero primary healers, one class capable of casting healing spells. Jester / Laura didn't want the role of "healer". (Which is fine; clerics are good at other things.) In Caleb they had a Wizard in the support/debuff role who did a lot to prevent incoming damage (e.g. Slow, or the earthen claw spell he used early on to restrain enemies where they could be picked off without being able to melee anyone.) But with that many party members, and nobody with feats or a bard to boost short-rest healing, you still want some healing spells. And especially at low levels, you might need some in-combat healing to pop someone back up. Campaign 2 definitely had a party-composition problem before Caduceus. It sucked for Laura that she got stuck as the one party member even capable of casting healing spells when she didn't want that to be her primary role. Off-healer / backup sure, that's something she did very well, and using spells like Command or Banishment to reduce incoming damage by taking one enemy off the board while they dealt with others. If she'd wanted to play a character that liked healing, and chosen her subclass to boost that (e.g. Life domain cleric), that could have worked out. But it's still a single point of failure to have only one healer, with the in-combat backup being someone using a potion or Healing Hands on her.

Vox Machina, level 15: goes through a full resurrection ritual complete with nat 20 love confession because they waltzed into an EXTREMELY foreseeable trap and then got absolutely mowed down by an off-brand warlock, a bunch of hired guns, and one guy with a Prismatic Spray, despite a ton of miscellaneous heals throughout. Mighty Nein, level 15: pretty much gets an entire eldritch horror flesh city literally flung at their heads while they're racing the clock against a high-risk high-reward corruption mechanic, leaves with more living PCs than they technically came in with.

My DM actually cleared this up recently for our table without even watching CR, although he has seen some of it. This was just a "general rule" type of observation. To paraphrase, be basically said: I've seen you guys, and loads of other players over the years rely so much on healing magic that you are hoarding potions. You do realize the point of potions of healing in a group like yours is so the MAGIC can be conserved, not the other way around right? I never thought about it that way for some reason, but he's proven right. Now that we're all using our potions first and magic second, our cleric has been WAY more effective in the other areas and made for a much more diverse character for them to play.

This is dependent upon your DM, though. In lots of campaigns, the healing potions are the only way to get the CLERIC up if they go down, or take the choice of who to heal and who to let fate do as it may out of the Cleric's hands if things go sideways. Its great to have a generous DM that lets you play that way... its also pretty rare I think. Most DMs don't reward players for managing to not use resources. Like, if you get through an encounter without using many healing potions, the DM is liable to have the next town experience a "healing potion shortage".

IMO all the heat on Jester not being a good healer is just because people are way too affixed. Three part explanation, SPOILERS ahead, especially to Ep 90+ onwards: A. Laura again had to settle for a class she didn't want to take. C1 she wanted to play the Rogue, this time she wanted the Warlock. I guess both times she opted for taking some elements of what she wanted to do, but with a different class. This time having some "Rogue like" features with a trickery domain and having an Archfey as her "God". Specifically in C2 she didn't want to play the healer, so she just didn't play one. B. Laura did use to Jester's and the M9 advantage many of her subclass abilities, sometimes to utter perfection. Think of the many times M9 made the group stealth check and avoided some trouble thanks to her Pass without Trace spell. Many utility spells providing crucial information (Sending, Scrying, Commune), some clutch non-damage spells in encounters (Banishment, Polymorph) and of course that legendary Modify Memory spell. She's using the Trickery Domain abilities very creatively and wisely, so it would be wrong to say that she isn't a good Cleric. She's just not a heal bot. C. Most importantly, D&D is played for FUN. Critical Role is such a success because they are committed to this idea. They're not trying to build the optimal build of every class, picking the best subclasses, etc. so they could "beat the DM". They aired more than 250 RPG sessions (including one-shots) and still keep going. They're so fun to watch because they enjoy playing with each other (OK, having a DM like Matt Mercer surely helps), and that's because they don't necessarily do the optimal choices, as they rather take the scenic route. Jester is a fun character. She is pretty much the leader of M9 and the main reason for them being the craziest sh*t show ever. They're not your regular bunch of heroes, and that's the beauty of this campaign.
@Kebutor
@Kebutor 3 года назад
Your first argument counteracts your third, even if she was pushed into being a healer she could always cross class into Warlock, she would have a lot of fun then as there are reaction shots and things can get upcasted just by being a warlock. The begrudgingly healing people was funny in a concentrated form like this, but having it drag on session after session would have been obnoxious. If she didn't want to be a healer but a warlock she could and should have. Two Warlocks with different deities butting heads would have been more fun then someone not doing what there character was made to do, heal. It doesn't mean be a heal bot or look over everyone for every little thing, you can still get hits in but when things get bloody you have to heal. It is just basic mechanics and when someone doesn't want to play what is needed, then potions, healers kits, scrolls, and magic items are abound. Or ask for a simple battle strategy or tactic change. She gets a lot of hate for this Cleric stuff and to be frank I had finished the first campaign and didn't want to see more of her's and Liam's confrontational behavior, and quite a bit of hate could still be coming her way from the first campaign.

@@Kebutor I see what you're saying. I'm not sure exactly how they picked their classes, but I know some of them had a more robust concept than others (e.g Mollymauk), so maybe they "picked first". I know someone had to take some sort of a healer/support. If she started with Warlock I agree it could have been cool to have two different Warlock (Fey & Hexblade), but the party was Warlock x 2, Wizard, Rogue (Arcane Trickster), Monk, Fighter (Blood Hunter) and a part-time Barbarian. Not balanced at all. While it could have been fun, TPK is not fun ;). I agree that she could cross class, but I guess that when it began to be an option, the party got a support Cleric, so she could just do her own thing with the Trickery domain and with being more of a damage dealer. Personally I think the Cleric is a more powerful and versatile class than the Warlock, but it's just my taste.

After a certain point, it makes sense to just make sure people get back up from 0 than trying to keep them from getting there. My general rule of thumb: heal the melee people when they get low because they're the front line defense for the squishy casters, everyone else can hit 0 and be popped back up because their movement being halved won't kill their turn. Jester wasn't being a bad cleric, she was a trickery domain cleric and their focus isn't on healing. Cad was a grave cleric, which is 1 of literally 2 subclasses for cleric that are healing focused.

As a guy who actually likes playing a cleric, healing and buffing the party, Jester sometimes hurts my soul. I felt it SO much when Taliesin was mildly panicking looking at Laura because she was about to launch a big attack instead of healing an almost dead Bo...

What's funny is Jester is right, at least in 5e. Healing isn't always very efficient so doing other things is very valuable. It's an Overwatch quote but I think it applies here too, "It's called Support, not Healer." It sucks that there's so many expectations inhirently tied to "THE Cleric" for so many, bc they can be monsters and the best support out there at the same time, way more than just healing.

Honestly I love how versatile cleric is. You can totally go “fuck healing” and just nuke or bash enemies penemies

3:57 "healing word is just so dog S***..." how dare she trash talk my favorite healing spell. Key words are 60ft range meaning you can use it while engage with a enemy with out leaving their attack range. and BONUS ACTION enough said.

Which is why it’s really funny that Sam defended as well. Cause last campaign, the healing without pike was split between Keyleth, Vex, and Scanlan. Scanlan doing it the most with Healing Word since he had little else to do.

It's really apparent how much 5e has changed the way a cleric is perceived or is supposed to be percevied vs the traditional Final Fantasy White Mage or MMO healer. Yeah they are a support class, but support does not always mean healing. Based on your domain of choice, you could fill in different roles.

Even as a MMO healer your job is to stop people dying not keep them topped off. It's perfectly viable to play a cleric as something like a Classic WoW discipline priest who is more about the shields than the heals for example. I think most of us who have played healing classes in 5e or MMOs are laughing at Jester because we've been there and thought the same things, just maybe not said them out loud so much.
