I absolutely ADORE Josh Young. Everyone always says that no one can replace Carl Anderson, and while I agree, Josh’s interpretation of Judas is so fantastic and unique that I can definitely make room in my heart for both of them.

That one part at the end when Mary Magdalene watches Judas hang himself: heartbreaking with goosebumps. Never thought that’d be an unexpected twist on the show, kudos to the folks that made this production and came up with that idea. Really heightens the emotion leading up to Judas' tragic fate.

I actually really love josh's choices and the fact that he's at the end of could we start again is very moving. Sure it's not what could happen but they have Herod with showgirls, it's not too literal. Having the core trio reunited one last time with them all agreeing that they with this wouldn't happen is poetic and a great transition to Judas's death. It gives a quick insight into his guilt and the fact that he did really love Jesus so it's not just a moral question he has to deal with (in which case he could easily convince himself he did the right thing) but a personal one- he's probably already decided what he's going to do and now he's just questioning what will happen to him. will he be damned for all time or if Jesus is who he says he is, could he be forgiven. I do wish there was more of a pause before the i don't know how to love him reprise. feels kind of rushed. personally kind of wish it would be a cappella and slowly crescendo into the big could he love me could he care for me. but that's just me. I think josh's vocals are honest and really match his judas as being straight forward and serious one compared to Jesus. Jesus is the rockstar. Judas is the strong man in the back that doesn't have the opportunity to go wild. Yes he does let it out on jesus but thats because he cares so much. Sorry that was so long and ranty I just really love Judas as a character and I love Josh as a actor/vocalist.

It's crazy watching this in comparison to the 2012 Arena Tour with Tim Minchin and Mel C. Such different styles! They are COMPLETELY different shows, and I feel like this song shows it off the best. Jesus isn't onstage at all in that variation, they've modernized the show and they're waiting to visit him in prison. It's loud, and the anger and confusion is SO prevalent. That being said, this version is almost poetic. It's sorrowful and the pain is more naive. They're both amazing shows.

Just curious, are you aware that Andrew Lloyd Webber confirmed on seeing this production that it was the closest one to his original vision, especially because of the dynamics between Judas, Jesus, and Mary Magdalene? Not that the original cast wasn't talented, although personally I prefer these performers to the originals. But I get it when you're attached to a production. I mean, a person would be hard pressed to convince me anything could improve on this version.

So, I think Josh is super talented, but compare this to Carl Anderson, Drew Sarich or Tim Minchin's versions of the death and this feels rushed. I can clearly see him crying...I wish they could have let him just take his time. Although this entire production feels rushed...it's like the director said "make sure there are NO pauses whatsoever"...and it's a shame, bc it has an incredibly gifted cast that I would have loved to see be vulnerable. I also haaaaaaate that there are people strolling across the stage while he's getting ready to hang himself. Besides being hella distracting and stealing focus (rude), it loses the feel of Judas being completely isolated and ALONE. And Mary screaming...just....no...there has to be a feeling of desolation at that point, so her being there and reacting completely ruins it. It ain't about Mary...this is Judas' moment...way to remove focus and make it about Mary's grief.

Why does Judas sing Peter's second solo?
@DaneToTheBone
@DaneToTheBone 9 лет назад
Yeah... That's a good question... Maybe the actor became sick? Or maybe they wrote him out. Or maybe he just couldn't sing... It's just wierd that they chosed JUDAS to sing those parts. It ruins the intire script... It's a duet between Maria Magdelena and Peter... The director's a fool. Shame on him/her!

Actually In most performances Judas doesn't take part in this song . He turned Jesus in for 40 pieces of silver and felt incredibly guilty . He sold his soul to do it . Committed suicide .
@victormeyers1860
@victormeyers1860 3 года назад
30 pieces. Also yeah while that’s true, this was Andrew Lloyd Weber’s vision. It’s a complete bastardization of the Bible because it tries to make Jesus more human, so in that aspect I like this version better because it follows that better. The other versions, however are more accurate to the Bible. As accurate as they can get in this musical, anyway
@ajitter89
@ajitter89 6 месяцев назад
Don't get me wrong Josh Young is an incredible singer, but having Judas sing "Could We Start Agains Please" and not Peter, who was Jesus's most pious follower, goes against the point of the song. Peter, unlike Judas, had faith in Jesus just as Mary and the rest of the Apostle did, and his forlorner to see his spiritual leader beaten both physically and metaphorically by the hierarchy of his faith shattered him.
@stormfischerr
@stormfischerr 4 года назад
I’m trying to be optimistic, but the staging ruins the entire meaning of these scenes. Firstly, this is at a point where Jesus is imprisoned and wouldn’t be able to see anyone, even family. Secondly, Judas was supposed to have run away in guilt and shame and disgust, and to never see Jesus or the other disciples again. And when he commits suicide, it is very important to stage him alone. He was the most radical of all of the disciples; he was always alone in his opinions. He was always the one follower who challenged Jesus, and in the end, he was the sole person who betrayed Jesus. I think Josh is talented, he just had extremely weird changes to work with.
@katbozues
@katbozues 3 года назад
Absolutely correct on all of this! The disciples are separated from Jesus and longing to see him...so to sing about wanting to see him when he's standing right in front of them loses the entire meaning of the song ...for his death, judas is utterly ALONE, and to have casually people walking across the stage while he's about to kill himself completely takes the focus off of it...and then to have Mary watch and scream? WTF? Take focus off of what Judas has just done and make it all about Mary? JUST...NO
@number6villageangel

Since Jesus doesn’t sing in CWSAP, his presence there can be as literal or abstract as you want to interpret. In 2000 Judas was watching him get beat up through the jail cell bars

The guy who plays Judas totally ruins the whole thing! He's changing the notes and the intire melodies. Why would anyone do something like that? There's a reason why the composer wrote the music like he did. Don't change it. I would kick the directors butt for allowing this BS. And choosing Judas to sing the duet with Maria Magdelena - SHAME ON YOU, DIRECTOR!!!

Josh Young. A Brilliant and talented performer. Let's see, not only was he nominated for a Tony award for this performance but I was lucky enough to see him as Che in Evita. Having seen the original production with LuPone and Patinkin on more than one occasion and the revival and just about every touring company I have yet to see anyone who could stand toe to toe with LuPone....Until now. Have never seen an Evita that could even stand on the same stage as LuPone but this guy was ASTOUNDING, in both vocals and acting. Sorry you didn't like the fact that he is interpreting the role for himself instead of just trying to mimic the original.
@seuss101
@seuss101 9 лет назад
Something to consider is that he's not the only one to blame for changing the notes. Almost every riff or note change in a production, especially on the professional level, has to be approved by the music director beforehand. So clearly the creative team of the show thought that what he was doing was what the production needed.

This happened five years ago, but I need to say this. Josh Young, for the most part, sings the score as written. I'm sure you're referring to how Carl Andersen sings the score. He is incredibly talented, and as such, he took a lot of liberties with the score, which is very much allowed in JCS, as seen with how much Paul Nolan (Jesus) played with the score. So, technically, Andersen was the one that "changed" the score. It's cool to prefer his take, no problem there, but I just wanted to make it clear for anyone that comes across this comment and agrees with it. Josh Young is singing the notes written in the actual score for almost the entire show. The reason it doesn't sound like it is that most Judas's take liberties and add riffs.
