Private prisons provide competition for wasteful government run prisons. Because they're a business they learn to cut costs and this is reflected in the budget of government run prisons that adopt these practices.
I did 4 years in prison. Prison reform is most definitely needed. Those places aren't productive at all in terms of rehabilitation. It's counter productive at best. But it's ultimately up to the individual.
@@bennyorozco6537 those "criminals" as u called them. Most are realer than you'll ever be. Btw, when u get busted for dealing narcotics. U don't get sent to PC. Actually a lot of prisons are doing away with PC. They need to bring back college degrees, real schooling, real job training, into the prison system. Shit like that. Something that's productive. Don't just send them back out there with nothing to use to help themselves.
Did a couple years, now I own an engineering firm. I might've been lucky, but prison didn't break me, only gave me motivation. I know people that are in there now that are in a downward spiral. Not sure what the difference was / is between myself and them, but I knew I never wanted to go back

Not enough people have money in this country to do anything other than work. Pick and choose which bills to pay out of the month, and work some more and repeat the process. Life is great
Hey dog, work to live isn’t the worst deal ever. At least we have microwaves and smartphones and roller coasters. Almost every single person who has ever lived before you has had it worse than you or I do.
@@MattH-wg7ou Exactly, and we live in the most abundant time of technology and luxury for the general population, ALL created by someone else yet you can still enjoy it.
@@MattH-wg7ou No you don't have to work to live. Thats the bullshit people tell you to keep you as a happy slave. Yes lets just all bend down and keep playing this fucking game these rich corporate fucks and the banks put us in.
What people in America don't understand, isn't that we don't want the criminals punished; its that we DON'T want them to do it again. Especially for nonviolent offenders, and for violent offenders I still say try to rehabilitate. Being inhumane isn't gonna help anyone when the guy eventually gets out of jail and hurts more people than he already has. I definitely think that preventing crimes is a way better use of tax payer money, but hey that's just my opinion.
The punnishment is loss of liberty and been away from family so when theyre inside everything should be done to make sure they dont cone back like they do in Scandinavia they only have 18% re-offending rate compared to 77% in America.
@ers5111 Definitely something interesting to look into but I think you'll find that its not the people that are different its the prisons. I'd just like to clarify that I am not particularly well read when it comes to the prison system in any country, however I am aware that in many prisons in the US overcrowding has lead to guards not being able to keep prisoners safe. Gangs then take advantage of this by offering protecting to their members. So now to be safe in prisons you need to join a prison gang, unfortunately, your affiliations with these gangs don't end when you get out of prison. Its a serious possibility they make a request for you to take part in illegal activity, I'm sure this is at least part of the reason the reoffense rate is so high. *this is not something I have come up with I'm just parroting what I heard in a ted talk titled "how gangs keep inmates safe" Another thing I think probably causes people to reoffend is the reoffense rate being so high. Sounds strange but I think there is something to it, if you're an employer are you more likely to hire an ex inmate if the percentage of reoffenders is 18 percent (as another commenter states is the case in scandanavia) or 77%. If its harder to find a legitimate job after leaving prison people are more likely to resort to illegal activity to survive.
I think you’re misunderstanding “poor” here. It’s not “people living in poverty”, it’s “he’s working his ass off for 50K a year and loses his house, the poor guy”.
I am currently in prison and I can definitely say the prison system is outdated and not helping the people in here..Joe I love your show. I got a cellphone if your wondering.
@ers5111 why are you 100k in debt? Because of decisions YOU made? Everyone wants to blame their debt on someone else. The only way I can buy that is medical. That system needs reform, but yet more gvmt involvement/regulation is only gonna make it worse.
Man during recession: man. Sucks that I lost my house. But I pay my taxes and my government is using my money to fix the bank situation with bailouts Bank man: I'll take that bonus now please
Joe ''I love Jamie, I dont want Jamie to have to worry when he walks down the street that this guy that they locked up 10 times gonna jump out of the bushes and take his knees with a baseball bat for no fucking reason other than he is crazy. Right? You don't want that, nobody wants that.'' Rogan
I’d take the time travel just so I could draw some paintings on the walls about what happens in modern times and do other crazy stuff to prompt a bunch of conspiracy theories driving people like Eddie bravo crazy trying to connect the dots
Idk what but @ 5:55 minute mark as he inhales to ask the 2nd rhetorical question of " where do you get your metal?" It set me up for him instead ask "where do you get your weed?" for some damn reason 🤣😂
i don’t get people that need to go into a job. i would love to be able to spend all my free time learning things i’m interested in, doing things i love, traveling, relaxing, and helping others. that would be super fulfilling. never would i ever think “i miss going to work”
Prison isn't about corrections or discipline. Its about the same thing everything else is about. Money. Prison is a big business, same with oil and medicine. It's all about money and we are the livestock. The cash cows.
Man I wish Joe would bring bigherc916 on the show. He'd be a badass guest, has an amazing story of bouncing back after 10 in the pen. He's funny as hell and super genuine.
not american here. so did occupy wallstreet make a difference? seems like nobody really cares about it now that the protest is over and nothing has changed.
@@Kalleosini Occupy carried out publicity stunts all around the country, calling attention to (originally) the corruption and other factors that caused the Great Recession, massive and worsening inequality, and much more. These issues were barely being discussed, and certainly not at a high level. We got that to happen, and it really hasn't stopped. It's a factor now in Presidential campaigns, both the nominating process and the election itself. As far as I'm concerned, we succeeded, in spite of everything.
@@scottcharney1091 I mean yeah it is better than nothing, but here we are years later and the best we got out of it was "some politicians talk about it" kinda disappointing. almost like your politicians does not have the peoples best interests at heart. I mean lets get real, if they actually cared, it wouldn't have gotten so bad that you'd need to occupy wallstreet. you should have brought out the guillotine and executed every politician and every banker, started fresh, even if it means losing some good people. (french revolution reference)
@@Kalleosini Indeed, it never should have gotten to that point. We've come a long way, but we still don't have a sufficiently thorough understanding of neoliberal capitalism and the damage done.
I would do my best to recreate technology as quick as possible and f up the timeline as most as I could thus hopefully making it past the 6 or more extinction level events...thus, screwing up the future that had sent me there in the first place. Basically extra butterfly effect attempts will be made....to say the least.
One thing Joe misses in the beginning about Ada Lovelace is that she didn't just make up programming, she invented the logic needed for programming, which laid out the earliest foundations for modern programming and actually programmed the mechanical computers of the time, especially the machines built by Charles Babbage.
When I was a prison guard for TDCJ 2009- 2012 ... prisons are not reforming anyone it's gathering manipulative, potentially psychotic, narcissist with similar interests into a small community and constantly reminding them that they aren't good enough for "society.. doesn't break them just makes them smarter n brings them together.
Now talk about how a good portion of corrections officers are the same as the criminals they're guarding. I've seen far too much abuse and corruption up and down new York state to think every state prison isn't the same.
not even close. pre-historic central asia was still well populated with both agricultural and hunter-gatherer societies. granted the timeline and location is very vague, you could end up in a city, and even if you don't, there would be human cities around the world at the time. can't say that for doctor stone.
Same with Enron. My grandma had bought a sbitload of stock in them. Then when the scandal hit. She lost a lot of money. Did the government give her the money back? Fuck no.
Prisons are effective when it comes to keeping dangerous people off the streets. If you want rehabilitation than we need to create something different. I think that a program for drug offenders and nonviolent offenders would be very helpful. Teach them something so when they get out they can get a job.
