Rugby Australia has made an important announcement this weekend by appointing the new Wallaby Head Coach, Joe Schmidt.
In this episode of Inside Rugby I take a look at the three new members of the Rugby Australia system who could well be responsible for turning Australian rugby around.
After a roller coaster ride with Eddie Jones in charge of the Wallabies, Kiwi Joe Schmidt will bring a much more calming and peaceful attitude to the head coaching role.
With great success with the Irish Rugby Union and the All Blacks behind him Schmidt joins Peter Horn and David Nucifora in key positions all hoping to bring plenty of positive results for rugby in Australia.

AS an Irishman, I am delighted to see this. Joe is an excellent coach and the perfect character to come into the Wallabies right now. David Nucifora was very successful here and is a no nonsense operator, very well respected . Rugby needs Australia to be competing again

Thanks Mark. As a South African I've always admired New Zealand coaches and their pedigree. You have such a surplus of requirements so impossible to hold onto them all. In fact, going to other countries undoubtedly assist in their development for the ultimate Black Jersey job. As a neutral, I am particularly keen to see Farrell vs Schmidt for the Lions Series. I wonder how much that played a part in the final decision as Schmidt's appointment was announced only a few days after Farrell's appointment as Lions coach.

Willie you are welcome and thank you for the comment. Some very spicy Coaching battles about to explode in 2024 Farrell, Rasmus, Razor and Schmidty to start off with.

Let's hope Joe Schmidt doe's a good job. We need a good wallabies' team that can once again challenge the All blacks. The Bledisloe Cup has been one side for too long and to be honest it's going to be the same for a while.

Thanks for the comment. I am going to jump on the side of optimism here and say that the Wallabies will give the AB's a good run this year. Turning point for Australian Rugby, despite what some of their ex players feel about Joe.

I think that’s a great approach for the Wallabies. As a South African I remember the pain the Boks went though during the 2003RWC, when we got beaten by England in the pool games & then smashed by the All Blacks in the quarter finals. I hope this appointment works out for them as we need them back giving all the teams in the Championship a run for their money…😎🏉

As an Aussie who is involved in rugby at the several levels below professional. My thoughts are, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither will the re build of top end rugby in Australia. However, if I was to build a base layer, these appointments would be it. What happens in the next 18 months will project how they go in the next decade or more. If RA can support this program without taking too much or anything away from community rugby, I think it’ll be very successful.

@2111bigad 7 месяцев назад
It’s interesting that you see community rugby as a separate endeavour competing with the wallabies/high performance rugby, not as two interlinking parts of the same system?

@@stewiegriffin2846 From where you sit, do you think it is achievable for both the Wallabies and community rugby to be successful, or is it going to have to be one or the other, given the overall financial state of the game?

@2111bigad I guess it all depends on what you define as "success" for both top end pro rugby and RAs money/funding for grass roots and community rugby

Just on the financial state of the game. Rugby Australia has secured an $80m loan from Pacific Equity Partners that will see its pathway financially be committed to through the Lions Tour in 2025 and up to the Rugby World Cup in 2027. The money is there, it's all about how it will be used.

Think Rugby Auz is now heading in the right direction No question about it Great thing you highlight the ‘Three Amigos’ Mark Cannot see Joe doing the job by himself > he needs quality brains and mettle around him (a case in class proven with Andy at the Irish Camp, elsewhere AB’s, as is clearly known) The trail of destruction in confidence in Wallaby Rugby has set in too deep We ALL wish for the Auzzies to do well • Bledisloe • Lions Fantastic two ‘lures’ for Joe and Team Most certainly hope they do a sterling job and turn things around with fine style ~ SOONEST ‼️❓ Thanks again Looking forward to the nxt Enjoy Mexico…it appears to be a great environment beste ex the Fairest Cape 👊🔥 🪖

Hola friends at the Fairest Cape.......if anyone is going to turn it around it will be Joe and crew. I suspect with his naming as head coach he will attract other good talent around him. Will just take a while for things to click. I give them this season and I am sure they will be ready, willing and able for the Lions Tour in 25.

Gday mark for me it's a loss for NZ I really liked what I saw alongside Ryan and indeed Foster in getting us to the WC final regardless of the outcome. but hey new Era and Rugby Australia got this right also a big fan of David Nucifora .ps Rugby Australia must be patient and not get the jitters 4 years to rebuild like us

I’m an Aussie and I see the 3 amigos appointments as less to do with turning the wallabies around in 2 years and more to do with changing the systems and development of players but more importantly the structures with Rugby Australia. The results won’t be noticeable for a few more years after Joe’s 2 years are up. Rugby in Australia is at rock bottom (partially thanks to Eddie Jones) and now is the time to implement a centralised system and that’s why the trio who were successful in doing so in Ireland were appointed in the positions they’re now. The best part about being at the bottom and losing everything is you can rebuild how you want to. Hopefully they get the support they require. Now to get rid of the Melbourne rebels and have more continuity and connections in a few combinations in key positions. The halves, centres, locks and loosies and build depth in the props. Get some players back like Lucas and build a core. By the time of the next World Cup sone of the youngsters could be formidable men.
@2111bigad
@2111bigad 7 месяцев назад
Unfortunately getting rid of the Rebels, which I understand from a purely rugby point of view, completely cruels any hope of a decent broadcast deal because you are leaving out the second largest advertising market, and broadcasting rights are by far the biggest earner for sporting codes.

Robbie Dean's started the grass roots approach, but that wasn't good enough for the Public and RA,for 20 years Australian rugby has been in a wasteland.

@@2111bigad I’d rather the success and winning games over the Melbourne market. Consolidate and play rugby where it’s strongest. Qld and NSW
@2111bigad
@2111bigad 7 месяцев назад
@@leroybrown8926 sure - but the money comes from broadcasting and advertisers want a national audience, so the catch 22 is you don’t get the amount of money you need to consolidate the game in NSW and QLD, so you’re back to square one. Unless you find a completely different way to fund the game that is not reliant on broadcasting/advertising. Thats the challenge as I see it.

Joe has Eddie Jones to thank for creating the situation Rugby Australia is now in. He might not have started the problem but he finished it funnily enough by going in and turning the national team around. Unfortunately his execution by throwing a bunch of youngsters into the deepest end of the rugby pool did not have the desired effect and left Australia the laughing stock of the rugby world. So in that context the work is still there only now there is a cooler head in charge of the rebuild. I would say that Joe will retire this time after his 2 years unless the aussies give him a sainthood and ask him to lead them to the next world cup. But more likely David Nucifora as the closest to an Aussie coach they've got will take them through to '27.

About time, now if only the AU powers-that-be aren't so pig headed with such tiny egos that the proof has always been in the pudding with the constant humiliation from the kiwi teams and the All Blacks themselves hitting them with reality. As long as Joey is allowed to do his thing, the Wallabies may be able to improve at least especially with David Nucifora there also in an advisory role after the work both men have done for Ireland.
