This song was chosen as an official state song for Colorado. His other song « Country Roads » was also chosen a state song by West Virginia. Not many artists can claim that! . Famous guitarist James Burton played for Elvis on tour in the 70s and after Elvis passed away Burton became John Denver’s guitar player on the road. Burton said that he was amazed at how John Denver could mesmerize a crowd during his shows. And this is after being in Elvis’s band for many years. That says a lot! Love John Denver, and you too Jayy🥰

I saw a huge thunderstorm once while visiting the rocky mountains and because you can see hundreds of miles away, every single lightning bolt was visible. It appeared to be raining fire and I've always assumed that was what he was referring to. I've seen the Perseids too and they can be quite a show as well. Especially in the mountains with no light pollution.

Two great John Denver songs I think you would enjoy are “Poems, Prayers, and Promises” from the 70’s and “For You” from the 80’s that John wrote for his second wife. Both of these are performed live on his Wildlife Concert album from 1995. On For You, John even plays the piano. As someone who saw John in person 16 times over the years, I can verify that his voice live was even better than on any of his many studio albums. The vibration of unconditional love and compassion in his voice and his deep connection with his audiences was breathtaking. You cannot just listen to John Denver sing, you need to experience him with your whole being, heart and soul.

John Denver is my most favorite singer! If you like the high voice, you should hear him on "Calypso" (which he donated royalties to The Jacques Cousteau Foundation) and he REALLY gets to high notes! But for his best songs along with Calypso, "Annie's Song" (popular wedding song), "Sunshine on my Shoulders", "Poems, Prayers, and Promises" (perhaps my personal favorite and listen to the one from The Wildlife Concert), "Follow Me", "Shanghai Breezes" (which was his last big hits)! You can't go wrong with any JD song!

John Denver has so many beautiful songs and everyone has their favorites. His lyrics are so deep and heartfelt. Rocky Mountain High has always been special to me. When I was interviewing for 2 jobs, I found myself in a small Native American shop in downtown Raleigh. I was living in Alabama and interviewing for jobs in Raleigh, NC and Spartenburg, SC. While in the shop I was looking at paintings and this song popped in my head with the specific lyrics "Coming home to a place he'd never been before". I stood in the shop sobbing. I got the job in Raleigh and have lived here for 21 years. John's music always seems to have the answer I need at the time. His song "Rhymes and Reasons" got me through Covid. It's about listening to the children and the flowers and letting them help us find a better way. It's gorgeous and heartfelt. It got to me during the lockdown when he says, "As the cities start to crumble and the towers fall around us", as that's the way things felt. Love your reactions. Great job!

"There's no such thing as a bad John Denver song. What you got is great John Denver songs, almost great John Denver songs, and the merely magnificent John Denver songs. The man was a titan, a true giant in the music industry. And on top of it all, he was a principled man with a backbone of iron and balls of pure steel. He stood to defend our freedoms from those who would take them from us, and nearly lost his career for it. One of my regrets was I never actually said hello to him when I had a chance." -- Dee Snyder (lead singer of Twisted Sister), on John Denver

Another very gifted man who died young, very much like Elvis, no 1 in the world for earnings in the 70s. His last 10 years like Elvis on the decline. His name was Henry John Deutchendorf Jr both parents German, his father niknamed Dutch flew fighters in the 2nd world war for America. John wrote Leaving on a Jet Plane and The Momas And Popas had a big hit with it. He wrote many of his songs himself and had a pitch perfect voice so he could tune his guitars very easily. A very intricate man who tried to put this world right and spent his own money doing it, sang for the president at the time, sang all over the world, didn't have Parker as a manager. Sunshine On My Shoulders, This Old guitar which was a little of his life, Eagles and Horses and of course Annie Song which he wrote in 10 minutes on a ski lift. He did a wildlife concert for charity towards the end of his life where he sings a lot of his songs. James Burton played lead guitar for Elvis in the Aloha from Hawaii and years up until Elvis died, then he played with John Denver till he died, he plays in the Wildlife Concert He died nose diving into the sea in 1997 in his newly bought Long Eze kit plane, aged 56.... Country Roads is now state song, sung at football games and civic receptions for West Virginia, and I think Rocky Mountain High is similar in Colorado...

@@paulineh4019 Yes you're right I blame my age, there's so many accounts on his death and his last 10 years. He was up in court again for his second DUI, he'd been dropped by his record company, he didn't have a full pilots licence when he flew his last time because he was still drinking. His father who he'd been reconciliation with had died, he was divorced from his second wife, and his career had plummeted, hence the drinking. Suicide was considered, when he nose dived into the sea.....

@@jennywren7822 ahh Jen, I'm old too :) John was in a good place when he died. Have you watched Behind The Music, JD? On utube. All the family speak, including Hal, Milt, Jerry and Johns oldest children. JD had a new recording contract, was in process of buying land in Alaska, new Websites and had stopped drinking a few years before his death. The 2nd marriage/divorce took a toll on him.
@jennywren7822
@jennywren7822 3 года назад
@@paulineh4019 Ahh, I didn't know about Alaska or another recording contract. If he'd stopped drinking why hadn't his pilots licence been renewed, he was flying without a license, and why another DUI which he was fighting. Did you know him personally? I'm in the UK. No I haven't, I've watched a lot about his death and the arguments there and his life, and of course the TV film of his life up till his second marriage. Elvis and John were similar in their lives, both died too soon. Fame and losing it, but then Elvis didn't really, his death caused an outpouring of grief all over the world, including me.... His second wife used him as a leg up in her own career, their daughter was a miracle as he had a low sperm count or he was sterile, his first 2 children were as you know adopted. The experimental kit plane he'd just bought to visit his daughter in Los Angeles, his jet he'd sold, lack of funds. He'd suffered depression in his last years helped by the alcohol. Depression is a nasty thing, usually when you've made up your mind, there's a calming period where the mood is lifted. I know, I've been there.

What I love most about John Denver, is his lyrics are so poetic. Like an artist, only his words are the canvas, and he paints a masterpiece each time. This is "close your eyes and get lost" music! One of my favs from him is "Calypso" which he wrote as a tribute to Jaques Cousteau. A legendary wildlife researcher, who explores the seas and the wildlife within it. His boat was called the Calypso. John was invited on board, and wrote the song during that expedition. R.I.P to both men! 💔

Some friends and I used to camp in the Colorado Rockies, the Grand Tetons and Alberta way, back in the seventies. There were these places that struck you to the bone with their beauty. In the late spring of '76 we camped along Grand Tetons, with the snow-capped mountain range in the background, piercing low hanging gray clouds ("poking the eye of God") nesting behind a line of tall pines at their foot, a clear ice-cold mountain lake in front of them, and in the foreground was a field of multitude of different colored wild flowers. We nick-named the place "Cheyenne Valley." We cooked thick steaks, with its juices dripping over open flames, causing them to lick the the meat, along with baked potatoes, and drank beer cooled in the ice-cold lake. Best damn meal I ever had or ever will! If there's a heaven, then Cheyenne Valley was a glimpse of it!

As a Colorado resident, we get some absolutely gorgeous sun sets. It looks like the sky is on fire as the sun goes down behind the mountains.

That's how it was back in the day. You got lost in the beauty of the land. The air was pure and you got high when you sucked your breath in. The night sky was a blanket of stars.

There is just no music on the radio like this today. First of all you have to sing. No autotune or anything. Just a man and a guitar.

Why are so many of the great artist gone so soon?John Denver could just sit there and give us genius vocals.It's like we don't even need to hear the music. He's that good.The backup vocalists blends in so well with his voice.

This song is one of the state songs for Colorado. Didn't you hear him say I love Colorado? John Denver is an amazing poet. He is describing a thunder and lightning storm in the mountains. Another great song of his is calypso and also hisle song for the Olympics. My very first 8-track what is Rocky Mountain High in 1970

I couldn’t click fast enough I definitely go more for a rock ‘n’ roll heavy-metal but I love John Denver have since I was a kid in the 70s his voice his songwriting is beautiful and I cried like a baby the day that he died hysterically. So he wrote it about a meteor shower raining fire in the sky……. But he did also say the word scar… more people more scars on the land…People ruining the land basically

Used to make fun of John Denver when I was a silly teeny bopper because nerdiness wasn't cool back then. But I really did love his music.

Your'e right about him "seeing something in the sky". He said he wrote the song when he moved to Colorado and experienced the Perseid Meteor shower one night while camping out with Annie and friends.
