Had to replace headgasket on my Isuzu 2.6. Followed video, all went back together, although I had to repair a few stripped bolt holes in the head. I was very happy when I turned the key after reassembling, it immediately fired right up! Thanks Johnny!!!
Thanks so much for making these videos. It helps to have visual representation when attempting jobs like these. I will be referring to your video while I do my head gasket on my 97 rodeo!
Johnny thanks for the video it really helps keep up the good work. I have a trooper that will go to the grave with me and this helps me to keep it alive.
Love watching your video's J5. Makes me feel like i've already done the next job on my Trooper.. even without doing it. What's the old saying "I love work, I could watch it all day long..". You do a lot of things that aren't "by the book", but I can see they'll work fine. This is the mark of a man who knows the function of his machine real well, and can see it in his head. Mechanical work is a lot like building work.. a lot of stuff is done simply because it always has been done that way and works, but ain't necessarily right. e.g. ..there's a dent in a solid brick called a "frog". Bricklayers in a country will always lay bricks frog down..and swear it's the only way. In another country they lay them the other way up and swear the same. In reality, the frog is simply a dent put in to stop the brick splitting in modern high temperature kilns when they're made and have nothing to do with how they're laid.. Your way is a lot better - engage brain before work begins - and will allow you to fix any machine after the Zombie Wars. viz: J5 alive in the Ozarks driving a Trooper in a barren landscape. You'll have every hot chick going so onya
I have a 95 rodeo i need to replace head gasket and exhaust manifold gasket. Thanks for the video. I have no experience doing it, but your video gives some good info.
Thanks very good info bought my pick up with motor in back was told that it was goid and running . Wrong cylinder head bad. But at least I see which way it goes in thanks again
Jack, you can pull the trans and clutch off and get the flywheel off. You'll need to either get an impact on those bolts or keep the motor from turning and get them with a breaker bar. You can remove the spark plugs from either 2&3 or 1&4 and run them all the way down and fill them with oil and then put the plugs back in, this will keep the engine from turning over while you break the bolts loose if you have to do it by hand.
I'm not sure what you mean by knicked edges. If there is any damage to the piston then it's come into contact with something at some point. Nothing wrong with chasing the threads, I've personally never done it, but it's certainly not going to hurt. I use painter's wax and grease remover prior to setting the head gasket down, I'm sure denatured alcohol would work fine, you just need to get any oil and dirt off the block surface. I've never used any type of gasket sealer, that's a no-no on these.
Hi johnny, awesome work n vids. Thank you. I'm ready to put the head (with int man, com chamb, etc ) back onto the block of my 88 trooper auto LS. Its been a long rebuild cuz I pretty much redid everything, down to lapping valves and jjet washing out fuel injectors with a youtube special home injector blaster outer. Its been a labor of love cuz I love my trooper. . Anyhow, im stuck on how to "drop" it in. Its heavy and im scared of the dowel pins scratching the freshly machined head surface. I dont really have anyone around to help right now, except my wife. Any tips. Hood seems like a pain to take off, someone said with hood off I could lower it in with ratceting web from garage rafters ( I have ratching web) . Thanks jonny, happy holidays. 88CaliTrooper from planetisuzoo.
Excellent video Johnny. Very detailed and easy to follow. Ive been thinking about fixin up my dads old trooper (1990, manual, 2.6), and I want to know what you recommend parts-wise. Where's the best place to buy a new head?
Thank you very much. I wanted to make sure before buying. So really on these older 2.6 's then it really doesn't matter what 2.6 head you use unless it's a 93 isuzu or newer?
Thanks by sharing Johnny, It's almost the same at my 2.3 and the tensioner part was a really headache the time that I have replaced the head gasket, BTW I would like know if there some procedure to remove the flywheel while engine is mounted and tranny slipped apart, 'cause I have a horrible oil leaking behind it "a quarter every 100 miles" and flywheel bolts seem to be over torqued and hard to loose it, thanks once again :)
I wish I had seen this before I did my head job on my 1986 Trooper with a 2.3 bored .50 over engine.Everything went ok but would have gone a lot better with some of this information. Chilton manuals for me do not tell you everything you need to know. I was fortunate to find an original 1986 shop manual that does.
Hello johnny5 I have a 1988 Isuzu trooper 2 with a 2.6 what head gasket brand would you recommend. I am doing a head gasket because cylinder #1 and #2 have 0 compression #3 and #4 have 145-150psi.
I was wondering if you could help me out with something? I have a 98 Isuzu Amigo 2.2 4 cylinder. It threw a rod . So I need a engine block.. mine is a x block will a y block work?? I can’t find anything to tell me the difference between the two? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Hey Johnny. It's me again. I am trying to find an EGR line ( copper tubing) That runs from the exaust to the Itek EGR system for my 1989 four cylinder Isuzu trooper. The threads got warped on my line and hard to reconnect. I'm having a hard time finding one to replace it. Do you by any chance have one that I can buy? Also a screen filter for the forced air intake system. I got the water pump housing that you sent me and it worked great...thanks.
Thanks for responding to my mail. I wrote back to you via you E-mail site but maybe you did no get my mail. I stated that I managed to reconnect the EGR line then I started up the engine after replacing the head gasket but the coolant is still gushing through the tail pipe. I did not change the intake manifold head gasket so I decided to remove the head and observed a build up of coolant inside # 3 an 4 piston air intake position in the manifold just below the Itek head. Do you think that I need to replace the intake head gasket too?
Okay vid until the doubling of the gaskets. More gaskets is more unions. More unions is more failure points. replace the gaskets and clean the surfaces, don't double them. IMO, unless you have evidence of a warped manifold, and that is an emergency measure.
Design flaw. Normal, surprised it's still running. Make sure you check the oil like a hawk or that thing will spin the #1 rod bearing in a heart beat. I'd get in the routine of running rotella oil in it and add a can of seafoam a day or 2 before every oil change for a while and maybe you can clean it up.
Olá tenho um trooper 2.6 gasolina e tenho um problema, o carro funciona em rolantin mas quando acelero vai a baixo, sabe dizer o que se passa? Obrigado
Hello, Was gonna see if you had any ideas what could be making my 92 isuzu pup 2.3 overheat. I've flushed it, changed thermostat. No oil in antifreeze and no antifreeze loss. What would be your next step, runs great, just over heats. I love this truck, no rust it's a beauty. 143,000 miles. I'm hoping it's not a head.
If you had a problem with the head you would lose water. Obviously there's no way I can tell you what's wrong but the first thing I'd look real hard at would be the radiator.
can anyone help?? iv just gone to put on my head gasket and realised my old gasket has hole cutouts for the small holes on exhaust side. new gasket looks exactly the same as in video
A scraper or razor blade to clean engine deck won't de-burr the mating surfaces. Rounding water jackets and surfaces here isnt good. Can lead to blown head gaskets.
What do you know on 89 4ze1 2.6 heads? Have an 89 with cracked head and gasket was out stamped with "1" in upper left corner. found complete redone head with everything included but still waiting on stamp number from seller. What do you know on these stamped number versions been hard to find out what they mean and interchangeability. so far info points to "1-6" stamped will fit. anything with stamped "93" is new version or smaller combustion chamber which if used gives higher compresion.correct?
I know it has been 10 years but I'm just now looking at a #5 cast head that's on a 1990. I'd like to know about what year Isuzu came out with that particular cast?
