--------
Famed vocalist Johnny Gill recounted the early years of his career. Despite having no idea as to the success or failure of his initial album “Johnny Gill” in 1983, he continued recording and singing and was unperturbed by album sales. The continued progression of his career, including the release of another solo album “Chemistry” in 1985, began to make an impact on both Gill and the charts. Amidst career growth, his personal life entered the spotlight, with a revelation of a relationship and eventual breakup due to color prejudice with childhood sweetheart Stacy Lattisaw. Gill shared his views on color prejudice in the industry and his current state of self-contentment after understanding and accepting who he is.

It's Not just in America in other nations & cultures people prefer lighter skin, dark skin means a person who works outside in a field, construction etc. . . Lighter skin people are presumed to be more educated & affluent, who work office jobs.

Stacy has alluded to the real reason she broke up with him on numerous occasions but because she doesn't have the platform that he has to tell her story, it doesn't make headlines. Whilst both are entitled to tell whatever version of events they deem to be the truth, I just wish she'd also be given the opportunity to tell her version on a larger platform, since it does paint her in a negative light even though this was decades ago.

Great interview. I never would have thought Johnny Gill had a complex about his skin color as a child 😯 🙁. Adults perpetrating colorism should not be embraced or tolerated. Regardless of the colorism assumption, it just wasn't meant for Johnny to be with Stacy because they were not compatible based on her statements in recent years. Stacy was critical to Johnny's early success and it's obvious she is not into colorism considering who her long time husband is. They should not have any hard feelings with each other, no one is perfect.

So glad Johnny shared this, I say the samething about myself when I was a kid alotta black girls used to tell me I was too dark for them and I hated being in the sun too long. I learned about preferences by the time I was 13yrs old so when I see videos of outrage about men dont wanna date black women or want light skin women over dark skin women, I be shocked ppl take it to heart like it's forbidden or sumin. I learned as a kid that everyone has their preferences, I thought everyone knew this. When I became a grown man most black women want me now, I haven't had any trouble neither. I guess that was a phase back then, like Johnny said. Let everyone have their preference regardless of how you disagree or how you rather live. You live your way and let other ppl live their way, it's someone out here for all of us. The only thing stopping women from getting what's for them is their ego, unrealistic expectations, they get in their own way of chasing this perfect man and perfect happy relationship like we see on TV, they keep throwing good men away because it aint perfect and they're not perfectly happy EVERYDAY but you're never gonna find perfect. Find someone that love your dirty underwear and do their best for you and chill out and appreciate it and lock in with him.

Stacy's husband is not light-skinned, so...Johnny had an issue because of what Henry Allen, and his brothers said to him, not Saundra or Stacy. I have found that dark-skinned people tease other dark-skinned people worse than light-skinned people do about skin color. Like Rick James on Charlie and Eddie Murphy. And Vlad, there are Africans that have a color complex, not sure what you're talking about. There is a problem of women lightening their skin and straightening their hair.

According to Stacy Lattisaw, that wasn't true. She claims it was something else why her family didn't want her with him. She said her mother saw something and it wasn't his complexion. Stacy is married to a dark skinned man and has been for many years. What Johnny is saying is some bull.

True... the black elite is/was very colorist. In the beginning, only light-skinned people were allowed to attend HBCU's... you had to submit a picture with your application to see if you could pass the paper bag test.

Colorism will never end in the black community. I could see it coming from the white community, but it even worse when it comes from the black community. Had to apologize to my daughter that she has to go through this same colorism I went through as a child.

I am mixed and I face colorism on both sides. When it's convenient to be black I'm told I'm not black. And when it's not convenient to be black I'm told I'm black. I can't win. Lol

Colorism is a huge thing in Asia. It comes from the idea that darker skin symbolises working in the fields all day and a symbol of lower class. Still massively prevalent, it's absolutely nuts.
