Deen was offered the job. “I ain’t no damned singer,” I believe was his exact quote. Lol I think the truth is more that they wanted him to leave the kit and front the band. He is a top tier in the world kind of rock drummer too though and didn’t want to give that up. He’s played and recorded with Bad English, Hardline, Ozzy, Steve Vai, Paul Rogers, He’s does most of the singing in a few side projects like the Journey through Time tour Neal put together with Greg Rollie. Check that out if you haven’t. It’s amazing stuff. And of course his new band Revolution Saints he is the lead singer and drummer. Deen is a beast on the drums and vocals.
Soto is so underrated. I’ve been getting into several of his past and present projects, starting with Talisman, Journey, and his current kick ass gig, Sons of Apollo. Soto, Thal, Sherinian, Portnoy and Sheehan. What an awesome array of talent there.
Thank you M Sims for documenting this tour. This is a piece of JOURNEY history. Wish I could have attended one of these co-headlining gigs between JOURNEY/wJSS and DEF LEPPARD. Thank you again.
SETLIST: (Star Spangled Banner) Stone in love Ask the lonely Wheel in the sky Keep on runnin Edge of the blade Who's cryin now (Deen) Chain reaction Lights (Jonathan cain piano solo) Open arms (Deen) Lovin touchin squeezin Escape Dead or alive (Piano/Guitar Segway) Faithfully (Deen) Don't stop believin Any way you want it --------------------------------------------------- Separate ways
@@scottpolasek3770 Perry would still be lead singer then LMAO Have you ever seen him with his solo band in the mid 90’s, it was incredible. In all respect Neal Schon I think is a different guy and the two are obviously completely different people.
This is the only post Perry line up I’d be interested in paying to see. Jeff and Deen bring an excitement to the music with their own style and both look natural doing the gig
Jeff es el unico capaz de darle su toque a los temas de Queen y Journey , sin parecer un clon. La verdad un gran cantante y gran showman. Ojala vengas con Sons of Apollo pronto a Argentina.
I was at this show! Deen is so good. Glad to see he’s back with the band. He’s the longest drummer they’ve had consistently (before he left for rehab).
Jeff scott soto did a real good job. It seemed like his energy really rubbed off to everyone else. He did the songs his way and was really good plus Dean's vocals were really good as well. Neal shouldve kept Jeff in the band.
@@anthonyn1312because JSS is a total badass singer. He’s a pro and he brought a new creative energy too. He’s an excellent songwriter as well. His voice was unique but he could handle the Perry stuff extremely well too. With Deen also carrying some of that load, it seemed like a no brainer to me.
After watching this concert for the first time, I wonder why Jeff Scott Soto was let go. He has a great stage presence and voice. He did a really fantastic job and blended well with Deen, who was killing it on the drums/vocals as usual. This was a good lineup.
I think they thought he didn’t fit the sound or look/style of the band. I feel like they announced him as their “new permanent lead singer” so it wouldn’t hurt ticket sales during the Deff Lep tour. If they said “our new temporary singer while we try to find someone better” it would have killed ticket sales.
@@cb24203I think they were just wrong if that is the case. He wasn’t a Perry sound alike but he could handle those songs just fine. Little doubt about that when you listen to how he belted the high parts in lovin touchin squeezing. His stage presence is excellent. He has that real front man charisma. He is a good songwriter as well and brought new creative energy. They could have done some new exciting and fresh stuff with him and Deen that wasn’t just Perry sounding. JSS has a tougher rougher edge that is kinda kick a** for real. Not that Arnell wasn’t a great fit but I think JSS could have been a come back kind of singer instead of just a replacement. They had a powerhouse duo with him and Deen. They need two guys to handle the touring load Neal demands singing Perry’s stuff anyway.
After seeing this tour in Baltimore, I couldn’t believe they didn’t keep this guy. Arnel is awesome but Jeff had the chops to play off Schons musical talent
I just watched the interview that Jeff Scott Soto did with the real music observer youtube channel. He's been one of my favorite singers for a long time. I just never saw or heard his Journey stuff. I did a search yesterday and found this. WOW! He definitely brought a lot of power and energy to Journey. I did see them with Steve Perry towards the end of his time with the band and it was a great radio rock show with all of the great musicianship and Steve's amazing vocals. That was a really great show. So is THIS. This seems to Rock harder. It could be the combination of Jeff and Dean adding to the ferocity, but I expected to watch a song or two out of curiosity and watched this entire video and half of it a second time. I will watch again. Jeff has a wide range of vocal ability. I am surprised at how well he delivers the Steve Perry vocal character and style, not to mention making the sound of his voice pretty close to Steve Perry's while still having his own tonal strengths. Impressive. I am sorry that I missed seeing them on this tour. I really liked what Schon and Soto did with SOUL SIRKUS on that disc. The songs Higher Ground and New Position are killer. I am always disappointed to hear the 4 letter words in songs .... it just distracts my attention from just enjoying the power and talent of the song itself when those words jump out , but I wish that that band continued. I am amazed at how the band here doesn't seem to break a sweat with layers of clothes while Jeff seems to be in a much hotter climate. Vocals take a lot of physical exertion though. This set is a tall order. Non stop high energy singing except for the ballads and Dean as always, really emulates the Steve Perry sound very well and what a great drummer while Jeff is a great frontman and Schon never disappoints. Just a great guitarist. Great style, Great sound. Talent all around with this band. I also found the youtube clip of the song that Soto recorded with Journey as a demo for song that they wrote for a 4th of July event. They sound great together. Maybe that will wind up in a box set someday. I forget the name, but he mentions it in that interview.
I was at this show. Def Leppard headlined the show. Both bands were awesome. Jeff Scott Soto did an amazing job. Wish he was able to stay in the band. I was over Steve Augeri by this time. His vocals were beat up and gone years earlier.
Jeff was and is fantastic. I have known him since 1983, in his pre-Yngwie days. Truly a great guy. He killed it on this tour, and Journey was lucky to have him. He already knew every Journey song by heart because Steve Perry was one of his biggest vocal influences. They had a chance at a very cool 2nd life. Jeff is better off now, but Neal is a douche for handling things the way he did with Jeff. I will never go to another Journey show as long as Neal is in the band, unless he makes a formal apology to Jeff. And Journey was my first two concerts ever. I loved them, but I love Jeff more. Nicest fucking guy, great pipes, hardest working musician and singer on the planet. He is awesome in Sons of Apollo. So happy for him. He has a new solo album coming out this fall too. Love you, Jeffy!!! 😘
I agree with you. Journey would have been a lot better off with jeff. Jeff is head and shoulders above arnel. Neal probably didn't like Jeff getting the attention. Neal has to be the center of attention at all times. That's my opinion. I love me some Jeff Scott Soto. 😍
This is my thoughts as well...The big swingin Dick came and started stealing the show...Why do you think Neal played so loud on this tour?? I usually hate journey's front of house mix as they tend to bury Neal for some insane reason...but not when I saw them with JSS they were 2x louder and played 3xs better on that tour!
Wow! Deen sounded almost like Steve Perry. Jeff sounds good, but I have to say out of any singer they’ve had, Deen sounds the closet to Steve Perry’s voice. Steve Perry will always be Journey! The best male vocalist of my lifetime.
When i read comments about journey, they always mention about jef sotto,&i never watch his vedio even once because i always love watching journey with AP,this was my first time to watch him and he was great singer also..
Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain cannot handled the different sounds of Jeff Scott Soto during the recording of Journey's Revelation Album.. Rock and Rolling!
Jeff is the best. Been listening to him sing live since 1983. Great guy too!! I won't go see Journey or buy any of their music again until they give him a heartfelt public apology for the shitty way they handled things with Jeff.

Didnt know about him. Im a perry fan forever. But gotta say. He rocked it. Anyone know why they let him go. Im wondering if it was to much competion for neil after steve left.
Just watching this you could see how much energy he had... Stage presence and command. I saw him sing with Yngwie way back.. One of the best singers live that I have ever seen! You are right on IMO.. Neil couldn't handle it.
I attended the show in San Bernardino October 14, 2006. They were touring with Def Leppard right? A friend bought me a ticket at the last minute and I was not familiar with the new singer of Journey. If memory serves me right I believe it was Arnel singing. Anyone else go to that show at the Hyundai Pavillion? It’s driving me crazy that I can’t remember if it was Arnel. He was not introduced as the lead singer of journey until December I believe.
I’ve heard it was Cain who wanted him out because he did carry “the legacy sound”. To me, that is why he is better than any other post Perry singer they’ve had. Saw them twice with JSS
Watching this I feel Neal is put off by Jeff for whatever reason. It’s usually what is happening off stage that gets bands in trouble. I think Dean should be the lead vocalist of Journey if you can get him out front.
Would’ve been cool if Soto had come in earlier so him, Augeri, and Deen could’ve simply taken turns on vocals. I know some fans wouldn’t like it, but I think that would’ve been awesome Then Augeri wouldn’t have ruined his voice so early. I think some songs are better suited to certain singers over others, for example, JSS does an awesome Chain Reaction and Edge of the Blade, Augeri on Ask the Lonely and Only the Young, and Deen on Mother, Father and Faithfully. They could’ve kept changing it up too. Would’ve let them do longer shows like during the Generations tour. Edit: They basically do this today with Arnel, Deen, and Jason Derlatka, but I think it would’ve been better with the lineup I mentioned.
I went to one of the shows on this tour, and the entire band sounded energized and like a different band. Absolutely wild, I can see Jeff being let go because they did not want to sound like a better band, just the same old band. Jeff did not want to have that going on, and he was absolutely exploding with energy and charisma, I can see management not being onboard with that.
I should add, I thought this was normal journey, when I listened to their original albums I was very surprised at how less generic they sounded compared to Jeff's interpretation.
That’s the damned shame of the whole thing. I love Arnell. Great voice, great singer, super story. I dig all of it, but Soto is as legit as they come. He could handle all the Perry stuff, but he was also extremely unique. He brought something that wasn’t there before or after. He’s a great writer on top of that and this was at a time when the music world was open to a bands like Journey having a resurgence. They had the old stuff but I really think they could have launched some really new and exciting stuff with Soto’s talent, charisma and energy. They could have done what Aerosmith did in the late 80’s and early 90’s when they released probably their best stuff ever. It could have been the same kind of new and awesome that it was when they first added Perry to start with. With Soto and Deen sharing some of the vocals too. I think they missed a huge opportunity. But that’s just my opinion I guess. Soto effing rocks still though.
I saw them with JSS live and it was by far the best live show I've seen out of the 7 times I saw them with all the "new" singers and JSS blew all of them out of the water...was shocked when they let him go!
Jeff is a great singer ..awesome front man and i thought could've wrote some badass stuff with Journey and took them out of Steve Perry's shadow like what Hagar did with VH ...but unfortunately i dont think they liked how Rock Jeff is and i also think that if he wouldve stayed and had to sing the Perry stuff every night it wouldve killed his voice pretty fast ..he doesn't normally sing in that crazy high range so that would've sucked him losing his voice ...i would've loved a more Rock oriented Journey with Jeff on vocals ..instead they are still in Perry's shadow
What's going on near 54:30? The microphone stand's arm is lined up, Valory swings the arm so the microphone is closer to his mouth, then Soto swings it more. Soto walks away, then Valory puts it back where it was. Some kind of comedy bit?
Jeff Scott Soto.. undeniably is the Best Singer and Performer post Perry's years. So glad we can enjoy this video's. Arnel is Good but not Great for Journey..sorry
Wow!! I'm embarrassed to say I never really watched Jeff Scott Soto during his time w/ Journey. What an awesome job he did. Voice is amazing! Kills all the high notes and has the 'Perry Phrasing' down. Plus w/ Deen on Drums, unstoppable combination. I would take this line up ANY DAY over the current one w/ Arnel and Steve Smith. Smitty, unfortunately, has become such a technically accomplished drummer, he bare has to move to create the Journey sound he did years ago. Downside of that is, it's like watching a statue. And Arne....Forget it!! Voice is totally shot. Almost constantly out of key and painful to listen to....Strains terribly. After watching this video, I would love to see this or the 'Journey Through Time' become the NEW Journey line up.
Let’s be honest Jeff is awesome Arnel is awesome but there was really no reason to have a stand alone lead singer when Dean was in the bad they could have saved payroll and not sacrificed quality Dean has an awesome voice.
Jukebox Heroes first song I heard Deen on vocals was Mother/Father after Arnel had joined. I was so blown away I must have replayed that 20 times. Unbelievable talent.
Soto's voice was suited more hard rock, so powerful that it lacked the soft emotions needed for ballads. That wasn't the fans were looking for, as seen in low tickets sales. Hence, emphasis was given on their next quest for a singer, tenor who can sing ballads. What sealed Soto's early demise I guess was when he filed a case against Journey to know why he was let go. This was his mistake. Anyone hired for six months and sues his bosses becomes a liability, not only for the present but for future opportunities. His voice wasn't underrated, this video answers it all.
I don't believe what Neil Schon has been saying of Jeff lately? Saying that his voice wasn't a good fit? As every show of him singing them journey songs, he's absolutely killin' it! and from what I could see, was a prefect fit into the band, so something else was going on? And why none of the representatives of the band is saying anything?, is anyone's guess!?1
Hello Mr Rugby....This story is very true that I'll try to short hand. I am actually and fairly popular guitarist and I know a few people. I know this is a fact and I really don't argue with people about it. Anyhow a very good friend of mine got to know these guys well and was welcome any time. He got close to JJS and 2 other members....I saw the videos of a few of those guys at my friends house, JSS was there.......The truth is this; Great singer, Jeff was also good looking, tall, dressed hip and had incredible stage presence , far above most. Fans were holding up poster's like "we love Jeff" JSS RULES" and what not. That was his 1st strike. Second, people walked past original and talked to JSS and got autograph's.Thats hilarious! 2nd strike.....JSS doing interviews constantly...strike 3 you're outta here!! He was way above any replacement singer and they hated him. He was the man! He was now the leader! I know it sounds cruel but thats the business of it. My good friend also spent time with a member who was drinking and he said things that he should not have said, really crude stuff about SP and JSS. Things highly personal and should have not broken trust. My friend told him to watch his mouth, " you may be #@%$^&*() but I dont need to hang around this talk. He let him have it and really didn't stay but 10 more minutes. my friend is a very principled guy and would rather told the truth then kiss his a$@. SP, evidently had some real problems one time in his life and Mr Budweiser spilled it. My friend hasn't talked to him in like quite a while. One night JSS called my friend and said he just got a phone call the day his contract was up.. Journey's management called him and he thought it was about tour dates. He thought these guys liked him but they were 2 faced. The guy said, "Hey Jeff, we no longer need your services". Then He hung up.......Nothing against the new kid but he's just not JSS, plain and simple. They don't pay this guy squat and they control him. He's a good entertainer but it doesn't compare.....I'm sorry about this tangient. Hope everybody is well. This is a true story. Thats business. Thank you, Bluesman
@@briantingle7302 I'm going to have to agree with all the points you stated, as it sounds exactly what a long time band with a couple of guys who've let their egos take control,This is a sad story, one that has been around the entertainment business for too long! I'm quite sure Steve Perry had his own squables with Neil and Johnathan, Not to mention Ross Valory when he was still in, as he was an original member! But this isn't something that only Journey deals with? This kind of thing breaks up bands! that finally get their success, and egos and money takes over! but Thank-you for your insight, it's greatly appreciated!😎🤟
@@MrRugbyloosehead yes, its all over the place, kind of normal. Thanks Brian Tingle Bluesman on the web. Hope they let this get to you my friend...Later
So glad in the end Jeff didn't stay, journey shred through vocalists, if jeff had stayed it would have wrecked his vocals, he had already done previous damage from the boogie knights days, love Jeff, love journey, still would have loved an album, but it was to brief a stay.
