I'm joined today by Dr. Emma Cahill Marron to explore the life of Juana of Castile, the elder sister of Katherine of Aragon, commonly known as "Juana the Mad." The historical portrayal of Juana as "the Mad" has been unjust, and in this episode, we aim to uncover the true story behind her life.

Thank you for this sympathetic discussion of Juana of Castile (I try hard not to use "la Loca"). I question whether she, indeed, had no interest in ruling. The biography written by Gillian Fleming questions this too, and it feels as though Juana not only had the interest but the potential, and that this was one of the incentives to keep her locked away and subjected to rumors of instability; not only by Fernando but by Charles as well. Fleming notes that, the few times that Juana was in charge, she acted decisively.

I do wish you had had a little more time to debunk the legends of Juana and Philip's body: Bethany Aram, Gillian Fleming and even Townsend Miller in the 1960s all explained the false exaggerations about this pilgrimage from Burgos southward. One of the few things I respect about Henry VII is his perspective on Juana, and his refusal to believe the rumors of her insanity - he did meet her in England, and he had corresponded with her during the early period of her marriage. He knew, also, that Juana strongly opposed censuring Margaret of York in 1499 when Henry was negotiating a treaty with Philip. Although Margaret was a sworn enemy to Henry, it feels to me that Henry must have admired how Juana championed Margaret. Munzer mentioned that Juana's tutor, Miranda, told him that Juana loved to write both prose and poetry. It's such a pity that we have so very little, if really anything, direct from Juana.

Thank you so much for sharing this with us. It was very interesting to see this side of Juana. I’ve always thought there was more to her & that perhaps as Dr Emma said she may have had bouts of depression with good reason. I feel the men in her life ( her husband & father) felt threatened by her rule & therefore made it seem like she was mad. More light needs to be shed on Juana the 1st of Castile

I would like to know, what did these people think about 1531 our lady of guadalupe. What did people in Europe think. I could agree more about marginalizing women to this day.

Juana is one of my ancestors. We're a very much removed bastard branch of Isabella and Fernando on my Grandpa's side. My family is from Mexico but we have a very high percentage of Spanish and Portuguese blood. Very much a bastard branch 😂 so we are not royalty 😂😂.
