Within weeks, Kai Lawrence (Caleb Lawrence McGillvary) became an overnight sensation after he gave a rambling TV interview that was streamed millions of times. But things took a tragic turn after his brush with internet fame, and in 2019, he was convicted of murder.
In February 2013, Lawrence, then a 24-year-old homeless surfer, gave a bizarre interview with news station KMPH about a disturbing incident that occurred when he was hitching a ride with a stranger to Fresno, Calif.
Lawrence claimed that while he was in the car with the driver, the driver admitted to S.Aing 14-year-old girl and then purposely hit a pedestrian with his truck before attacking a woman who came over to help.
Lawrence said he then sprung into action and repeatedly hit the driver's head with a hatchet in an attempt to help the injured bystanders.
The colorful way Lawrence communicated this violent story ("smash, smash, SA-SMASH!") caught the public's attention, and his account became a meme. The media swarmed around Lawrence, who seemingly faced mental health struggles of his own. Lawrence was invited onto everything from reality shows to late-night TV, and even appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live in mid-February of 2013.
Lawrence, who was still homeless, headed to New York shortly after his newfound fame. But within a few months in the city, he was arrested for killing a man named Joseph Galfy, whom he claimed had sexually assaulted him.
Galfy, a 73-year-old lawyer, was found dead at his New Jersey home in only his socks and underwear. He had been beaten to death.
Officers investigating the case found a sheet of paper with Lawrence's name on it inside Galfy's home, as well as a train ticket receipt leading them to surveillance footage of Galfy hugging Lawrence at the train station
When Lawrence was located at a Philadelphia bus station, he admitted to killing Galfy, but claimed it was self-defense following an alleged S.A. Investigators noticed inconsistencies in his story, and Lawrence was convicted of first-degree murder in 2019.
He was sentenced to 57 years in prison. He remains imprisoned in New Jersey today.

Thank you for posting this. I have really bad PTSD from what my birth family did to me when I was a young child, that was made worse by what happened when I was a teenager, and that was triggered by the Fresno incident. So many people in the entertainment industry preyed on my alcoholism, but I’ve learned to manage my PTSD since then through meditation and DBT; and I realize now, in hindsight, that their exploitive behavior is institutional in nature. Just look at the investigator in this video: instead of bringing me to a hospital to administer a rape kit and test for drugs, he tells me to drink the water I put my cigarette out in. That’s how survivors of sexual assault are treated in New Jersey by predators lurking behind the badge.

There is documentary about him. Hes a very complex person that had a really horrible childhood. This story isnt as cut and dry as it seems. You have to keep in mind that he was homeless. He may have felt taken advantage of, but went back because he had no other place yo stay thinking he would at least be more aware, but it seems like he was drugged. Who knows what that man had done to him and maybe others. Just the fact that he was scoping out a Greyhound bus station in times square looking for people to pick up tells you hes a creep. He also has mental health issues that were exacerbated by things that happened to him during childhood and i believe he had epilepsy.

Thank you for the video, I found out that investing is not for everybody, you just need a strong stomach too see your portfolio go down. From my own point of view, you need to invest smartly if you need the good things of life. so far i've made over $255k in raw profits from just 6 months into the market from my diversified portfolio strategy and i believe anyone can do it you have the right strategy, mutual funds takes long time but investing smartly is the key for short term. I think you are wrong about Kai. I truly believe the old man that was killed was an evil predator and who knows how many other people he has drugged and raped before he messed with the wrong person. That man saw Kai as a young, vulnerable, homeless kid with an alcohol addiction and used that to lure him in and manipulated him by acting like a friend only to take advantage of him. Little did he know that Kai had psychological issues from being abused as a child and suffering trauma as a homeless teen and this man triggered that. Also, I think the drugs that old man gave him didn’t sit well with his traumatized brain either and caused him to overreact

I rember this like it was yesterday...it was insane! "Kai" was somehow the cool homeless kid who just got rides from strangers for a living while spewing about love, world peace, and how beautiful everything green was. He claimed he had no family, nothing to his name except a backpack and I believe a skateboard. All the younger teenage girls had mad crushes on him for some reason. Turns out he was really just a over privileged kid who chose to leave home, his normal loving family, and friends. He later turned out to be a cold blooded murderer who killed a couple of the poor unsuspecting people that he hitchhiked from. His whole story here (about the guy doing anything at all to him) is a complete lie

@@GenZMother you’re saying a 75 year old person was capable of that? Look at Kai. Tip top shape, hugged the guy in the vid, then went back voluntarily after supposedly being “raped”. Barely any detail in Kai’s story. Always the same story with this guy. Being raped. 75 year old man. 75. Think about that. Ain’t gonna be able to charm and stupefy his way out of this one. Remember this guy just pisses wherever he wants. “Tasted like drug or something”. Nope. Not buying it.

@@mkdisciple Ask my mother what my 75 year old father was capable of LOL he was definitely fit and virile enough. What was the creep doing hanging around bus stops picking up homeless people and bringing them back to his house for drinks? He does sound like a predator, that’s all I’m saying. While I don’t think Kai was actually raped, I do believe the old guy tried something on him and fucked around and found out LOL

@@GenZMother Nah I agree. I think both played a dangerous game, though. Kai’s not as innocent as he like’s to portray. The guys probably touched his leg or something(testing waters, but wrong to do on a man) and Kai killed him brutally. Does the punishment(proposition)fit the crime(death)? A little strong if you ask me, but that’s my moral compass. I’d be like “ugh, dude, what are you doing?” And then leave. I mean, I probably wouldn’t even be on the same sofa.
