Katherine grew up in Prince Edward County, Virginia, which at the time had been waging a movement in Farmville to fight for job growth and access to public education for Black members of the community. As a participant in the NAACP Youth Council, which had organized the local jobs movement, Katherine left home at 5AM and traveled on one of three or four buses from Virginia to the March on Washington. She remembers having never seen so many people at once. When their schools opened that September, those who attended were excited to talk about the March on Washington experience in their classrooms.
