Kellogg’s are facing a backlash.
In an interview a few days ago, their CEO explained how when people are under financial pressure, they market to that category.
For example, if you are struggling to afford chicken for dinner, you could eat a bowl of cereal instead.
As a business, they can expand their sales by getting you to eat cereal at other times of the day.
Because breakfast? They have that locked down. Cereal for breakfast is the norm.
But, if they can get you to start eating cereal away from breakfast (which a chunk of their consumers do), they can grow their business.
This has prompted a lot of backlash with various news outlets reporting on it.
Because ultimately, they are marketing to people who are struggling to afford food, like chicken (as their example) and a lot of breakfast cereals are not the most nutritious options.
Whilst people will have different opinions over how backlash-worthy this is, I think it is a good reminder.
WHY you eat what you eat is influenced by a huge number of factors and big corporations know how to manipulate product taste, cost, portion size, and convenience to make their products as attractive to you as possible.
So it’s not surprising that ultra-processed foods are becoming more abundant in our everyday diet.
