Duane, Mike Tyson said it best “Social media made you all way too comfortable with disrespecting people and not getting punched in the face for it.” Keep on keepin on, Brother!
Very Well said Dwayne. I imagine an 18 year old kid who recently moved watching you teach how to cook eggs and sausage. No one may have taught him. And over coals is different than a stove. It was informative. I recently turned 55. I tell my kids all the time, “ the older I get, the more I realize how little I actually know”. I used to brag and try to impress people. One day I realized. It’s not about me. I don’t have to be the best or the fastest or the smartest. It’s about helping others and being someone you be proud of when you lay your head down and go to sleep at night. Brotherhood of the Leaf👍🏻
My two most favorite things to do is teach someone a skill they didn’t have, and learn a new skill from someone else! Learning is a lifelong experience! Two rules… share what ya know, and be teachable… follow them and you can go far.
Awesome message,as Mark Twain said never argue with a stupid person, they'll bring you down to their level & beat you with experience, those that call others ignorant are themselves ignorant & have a closed mind
I always felt ignorant because I am not good at working on vehicles. My dad could work on cars, school busses and tractors. One day a customer who is a mechanic said he was amazed at my leather work and saddle repair. That was when I realized everyone has their own specialties. I also agree that if my customers are just starting riding I make sure they know we all started out not knowing and we are all still learning.
What a wise and humble man. He tells it like it is. A wise man knows you are never too old to learn something new. Thankyou for these videos they should be shown in schools. Better education than what public schools offer today
I love your phrase "Disturb my calm" and I admire people like you that embrace and exude a well centered calm. I have found that when I am at peace in myself I can do good things and there is growth around me. When I am at odds with myself, nothing positive comes from my works and my presence. You can call it Spirituality, Karma, Tao, God or simply Peace - there does not seem to be a way to be happy without it.
Im a Mexican American from Northern California. If you ever met me you would probably never guess I subscribe and watch your channel. But the older I grow. And the more I learn. Us true Americans no matter what the background, have more on common than we do apart. God bless
Thank you Dewayne. As a 23 year career educator of adults, this is the bases of my career, and my life. No matter how much we learn, no matter what we know, there is a world of stuff by comparison that we do not know. And until we embrace that we do not know, we can never learn. And until we embrace that we will never learn everything, but we TRY to learn as much as we can, we will never be happy. I follow you and will attend the school BECAUSE I don't know. I don't know horsemanship, saddles, feeding, caring, and communicationg with a horse. Bonding with a horse. Am I going to be a professional wrangler? No. Am I going to change my career after 23 years in my late 40's? No. But I WANT to know. I WANT to learn. And the first step is NOT to find a techaer, that's step two. The first step is to know, that I do not know, and embrace that I want to. So thank you Dewayne. We'll see you on down the trail.
Great cigar for a change of pace too. And the Toscano’s which are also fire cured are another great option, especially for a short smoke. But WOW, I started watching this because of the cigar mention but I got a lot more than I bargained for! Never thought I’d be so provoked with deep thoughts by a cowboy telling me an old Persian proverb. I genuinely appreciate your disposition and overall “take” on these things. Thanks for being a deep thinker and sharing it with the world.
All I can say I learned something Dwayne from you today,, I’m 57 and I will keep learning till i die , I love hearing what you have to say!!! I always was for the underdog 😊
Well..this was one my favorite so far. I'm 70 yr old great gramma .I was a ranch hand most of my life. Raised up my kids right by my side. I sure enjoyed all of it !! I look forward to your videos .you are so spot on .your never too old to learn something new. God bless you and momma .
Man alive, I agree wholeheartedly with every word said here!! I wish every human in America was locked in a room with this playing so they had NOTHING TO DO but listen for these 13 & a half minutes! God bless you & Momma, Dewayne🙏🙏
I can't believe any one would be critical of your willingness and your wifes to teach people how.to cook outside.. I enjoy the cooking shows and i learned a new recipe . I have never used an iron skillet, or knew the value of cooking with one and I'm 80. Please keep up the good work. So needed.
I'm a 30yr old man and I don't even know you Duane but I could feel the fatherless child deep down in me craving your respect, friendship and guidance. That's when I realized you are probably the best father figure anyone could find.
Yes ! The man said it, right ! We are all ignorant in many fields. So don’t be a bully. That’s despicable ! If you know something don’t laugh at people. Teach them. If they want to learn.
Even for those that know how to do the “simple” things (speaking of myself personally) can still enjoy the content of someone embracing the simpler things in life. If someone learns something from it, then it’s all the better. Keep up the good content brother, I enjoy every bit of it. It’d be very enjoyable to sit down over a cigar, and have some good conversation with you some day.
There's a lot of us thanking you for your videos, but I'll throw my thanks in there too. As a 48 year old who started my horsemanship journey when I was about 44, I have learned a tonne from your videos and the horse people I know personally. Horsemanship is a hard world to get into when you haven't grown up in it. It takes a lot of learning and a lot of understanding to do it right and not get killed or injured but it is so worth it! I am very thankful for the instructors and mentors I have had so far that have been willing to bear with my (sometimes unending) questions, and were willing to bring me along side and teach me. I count your channel as one of those excellent resources! Keep it up Sir!
I am a retired Aerospace worker in Sacramento CA. Love your video's. Keep'em coming. I am a big believer in conman sense and we are sorely missing this in today's world. So thanks for your video's. I have recently learned the beautiful, disciplined, sport of target "Archery!" This simple bow, string and arrow sport has brought me patience, form discipline and quiet time the passion of learning something new in my 60's. And it get me out into the woods, which everyone needs!! Anyway, just wanted to share something special to me. Peace, Jim
VERY WELL SAID!! This is Pure, Salt of the Earth Wisdom, and the world needs it now as much as ever before. I can't put it into words well enough to let you know how much I appreciate you. My hat is off to You Sir. God Bless You and Hey, I love you too Brother!
As a man who’s father left our family in my early teens, and as a youth pastor, I can see a severe need for fathers in this generation. That includes a manly man showing someone how to cook basic things and just talking. Keep the videos coming man. I love it!
Great message, sometimes people need to be reminded. RU-vid has become a source of learning and not everyone has had the experience of working or preparing food outside. Thank you what you do and Willingness-to teach.
I am a 20 year old in construction, working for a company and running my own legal business as well. When you talked about being untaught and how others treat those that haven’t been taught, might have been the best conversation I’ve heard in months. We all appreciate you man 🤝.
Hi, Dewayne. I am a 59 year old female -- a city girl and a retired social worker. I have been horseback riding twice - once in girl scouts and once on vacation with my parents. I watch RU-vid videos on art because that is my hobby. However, I recently found your and Mama's videos and like them a lot. I agree with you about our country falling apart because people cannot seem to talk to each other about different views and ways of life in a courteous way. When there was the attack on the capital ,I was so scared I had a hard time sleeping because I was worried people with different views than mine would go to front doors to take Democrats to a concentration camp. Anyway, thank you for your videos. You are making a good contribution!
There's a saying I learned some years back about working and riding horses: "The hardest part about horseback riding is the ground." So Dewayne, to respond to your video I'll say 1) we oughtn't be too hard on ourselves, and 2) we darn well better not be too hard on others. As the saying goes, "the rising tide lifts all boats", so we should never assume what another person knows nor should we react negatively to a comment that in all likelihood was well-meaning. Most folks aren't "bad," but some folks can be "ignorant" and lack tact. And sadly, reacting angrily to an ignorant and tactless comment is just a wasted emotion. Life is too short for that. Keep on keeping on with your videos! Keep on teaching the "simple stuff." We need a whole lot less complicated stuff in our over complicated world.
Duane, you hit the nail on the head! I would like to add a comment an old timer once told me that stuck with me thru the years; “If you are ashamed of asking questions you are ashamed of learning”! I changed it up to people I taught “There are no wrong questions”! I really enjoy your videos. Keep them coming Sir!!!
Dwayne, That was about as great a fireside coffee conversation as could ask for. Great topic. Thanks for your perspective & insight. Like you referred: You don't know , what you don't know.
Dewayne. Thank you for all that you post. There is always something that I learn from them or have known in the past and forgotten (one of those oh yeah, I remember that) moments. There might be some younger folks watching that haven't experienced yet what your sharing and it can be a teachable moment for them as well .
Loved this video, thank you for doing this video. I know I do it from time to time, more than I liked to, I take for granted the things I’ve learned and how quick I pick up trades and catch myself expecting others to learn as fast as I did. Never heard it explained the way you did, thanks again
Sometimes I’ll watch a video all the way through, and afterward feel like I wasted my time waiting for something of substance. Your videos are always a pleasure and I would like to command you for your perspective.
WILL ROGERS as he often did, got it very succinctly "Everybody is ignorant about something". So all I can say is I also hate bullies. So God bless you sir for standing up against what is Wrong.
Thank you, Dewayne, for being so humble and willing to share your knowledge with us on a first grade level. I haven't grown up around horses, but learning bit by bit from your videos has been wonderful for me, and I look forward to much more instruction. Sometimes I forget how much I don't know, and it's always good to be reminded that we're all learning and growing. God bless you and the Mrs.
Congratulations on 100,000 subs! Just saw it change while I was watching this video. Thank you for being a positive influence on us young people who don't have a lot of people in close proximity to look up to or to teach us. Your videos on calmness and enjoying simple things have helped me going through some tough times at the moment and for that I thank you. Can't wait to see your lovely bride on the channel for the 100k video. 🙂
I found you a few weeks ago. You remind me of my older cousin. Your knowledge, life advice, dress and voice. He was an angus rancher in Montana his whole life. He passed from a heart attack about two years ago. I appreciate your videos sir
Excellent message sir! It's usually a small minded person that bullys and berates others. This age of social media and keyboard warriors has really brought out the worst in some folks. I appreciate your points of view and philosophy of life. It's a breath of fresh air. Thank you!
I'm not into horses but do love them but more than that recently caught this Chanel because I like hearing you talk and explain something that I don't know. As a brother of the leaf this vid hits the nail right on the head. Cheers, Lee
Mighty fine words, Duane! I admire humility and I go out of my way to share that which I have learned (as you also do). Stoicism has been sought for millennia - - - you are a great at it! Much obliged.
I'm new to your channel. Only been watching for a couple weeks now. Been working farms and ranches my whole life and I'm near sixty now. Thanks for your down to earth approach. The basics can never be stressed enough. No matter how much you know. I kinda rambled here. But it's refreshing to find someone that lives and teaches so similar to me. And I also hate bullies. So thanks again.
Well this will be a first for me. I have never left a comment on any RU-vid video before. I suppose there is a first for everything. I really appreciate this, and other videos like it. And I feel that is worth mentioning that while your basics to most thing for horses, cooking and cigars are mostly things I know. There are many times there is something that I take away from your tutorials. I enjoy the pace and the attitude. At the old age of 38 (tongue in cheek) I find myself in A rush with my young horse. Your videos (as well as pat and deb Puckett) remind me that I’m not on a schedule and to slow down. In fact I watch the both of you often and use the information to may my own Ohio hillbilly way of working my horses. I hope you both continue to do what you, and wish you the best of luck. Thanks again.
There’s some that need to hear the truth. And sometimes the truth hurts. We just need to be receptive to listen an learn so we grow. The day I stop learning is the day that this earthly shell is dead an I’m in heaven with God an I believe He will teach me all I need to know.
You don't need to apologize, it is the bullies that do. Love all your videos. I know a lot about some things, but very little about most things. Life is a learning experience. Some people keep making the same mistakes over and over and expect a different outcome.
I'm really enjoying your talks. I started watching your videos because my wife has never rode a horse and she wants to. I rode some back when I was in school and I graduated in 81. Then in 95 I went on an Elk hunt in Colorado and rode a horse. I ain't been on one since lol. I don't figure I know enough to tell her anything bout horses. She watches the ones about horses but I like em all. You are spot on about alot of things, just like this video. You can't beat experience. You strike me as a country gentleman that I could set around and talk with a few days. And I would trust you with showing my wife how to ride. Keep the videos coming we really enjoy them! Hope yuns have a great success with your new adventure. Your perty close to us now we would like to stop by sometime
Thanks Dewanye I appreciate all you say and do, a lot of stuff you teach I already knew, but there has been plenty of what you have taught that I didn't know. I always keep an open mind, and I'm always willing to learn from others, you learn something new most days of your life, if you're willing to open your mind and listen. Common sense, skills, and knowledge are very valuable.
Just discovered you this morning, and wow you are spot on. I deal with kids sports a lot and I have to remind myself that kids don’t know much because no one has taught them the way I was taught young by my parents and grandparents, and I will admit I’m behind on teaching my kids some life things but we are working on it. Today’s world is so different than 35 years ago. Being patient is key in teach, and in learning, and this world is trying hard to end people being patient with everything on demand. Keep up the awesomeness!
My god is this true!!! I've learned much moe from listening and asking questions than knowing what I know! It's amazing what people will teach you when you listen and questions!
Am so glad. Anyone who thinks introspectively is bound to think a wise thought. I tell my friends all the time that "Common knowledge to you is not common to all."
I really like your channel and your approach to teaching. There are many people out there who can learn from you. Especially folks who are not blessed to be from the country but wish to learn to be more self sufficient. Keep up the good work!
Amen! Sometimes, unfortunately, we need to help others by admonishing them. Your talk today was a good reminder for all of us - thanks for sharing your thoughts and insights.
I really appreciate your words and this channel a lot. I always find it nice when you’re able to teach someone something new. Ignorance is opportunity.
Duane, you are class act sir. I just subscribed to you a few days ago but I have watched several of your videos. I greatly appreciate your wisdom and insight in various topics. I have also enjoyed your tutorials on camp and horsemanship (I grew up on a farm and listening to your stories always bring back memories). I also appreciate your comment about religion and ignorance in this particular video. I am a Heathen/Norse Pagan, but every life topic you have ever discussed has completely meshed with my world-view and is how I plan to raise my 2 kids. This world is in trouble but if we aren't afraid to stand up and talk to one another u hope that we can turn it around. And having more people like you and Momma certainly helps. May your God continue to smile upon you and good luck on your future endeavors.
Pat's videos make it look simple and some of it is but the part you can't see is he's wisdom. He can think like a horse. Your right some people are to busy telling you how good they are they forget to learn. And if you take the time with anybody they have some to teach. Great video! I don't smoke cigars but I Injoy learning about them .And one day I may use that knowledge.
Thank you for everything you do on you tube I really enjoy listening to your thoughts and your time that you spend on teaching different subjects such as cooking horses hats cigars I really appreciate your time and doing this I always look forward to listening to what you have to share for there are a lot things I don’t know about
When you said that we are still to be taught like a child learning the foundational teaching such as speaking and grammar, we are still to learn life.... all of us forget that we still have that child in us that wants to be taught in life but are distracted by the internet.
Here is a quote that should go down in history as many of the greatest quotes of all time; "There is a big difference between ignorant and stupid; ignorant is untaught, stupid is unteachable." -Dewayne Knowles (American phylosifer and horseman)
"There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which can not fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance-that principle is contempt prior to investigation." --HERBERT SPENCER-- Spencer was a very widely known English philosopher, scientist, theologian during the 1800's. He was also among the creators of the field of sociology. He was among the greatest minds of Victorian England.
Man you're awesome.. I love the way you speak, more what you say is how I was raised and think also. Keep up the good work..never know who you are inspiring... South GA Farrier CB
Good talk. When my kids were little and asked me something I didn't know, I answered with- " I can't know everything, I'm only one Mommy !" They laugh about it now and tell me to search youtube!
Same in Georgia for the tobacco curing. My Grandaddy was a tobacco farmer along with the rest of the family back when I was a kid. Tobacco farmers were hardworking families.
