Fascinating, it is such a refreshing approach to see detailed SCIENTIFIC data, I am guessing how the turbo lag will be addressed but keeping it to myself (unusually), some solutions are not as practical but I suspect the answer is surprisingly simple. It sounds like GM did their homework on the variable geometry turbo. Good driviability, decent power at 2,800 RPM, and decent fuel economy. It is a perfect sized turbo for a STOCK application. However, there is not much "head room" from modification over stock power, except for maybe some improvement on the air inlet. If pushed passed the stock settings, the turbo becomes very inefficient, very quickly, as demonstrated here. So overall, GM designed a turbo that delivers its full potential in a stock application. No performance was left on the table. Also to note, Gale is correct about placing a larger turbo on an otherwise stock engine. It wouldn't create any more power than stock, as limited by the single MAF Sensor. it would actually decrease drivability, as you would have introduced unneeded turbo lag. The best concept is to look at your situation and power needs, then build the engine to your desired performance level. Everything needs to work in a coherent, complementary environment to reach the goals and expectations. If one item, such as an oversized turbo, is out of spec for the rest of the engine, the entire system produces sub-par results overall. Those last two sentences can be applied to multiple facets of life. If the "intercooler" at work cannot keep up with the workload, the entire team has to work harder to product the same level of "Horsepower" (AKA Output). If you overtax your marriage, such as the overtaxing of the stock Turbo Charger, you will see degradation of performance throughout the entire system. You cannot neglect one aspect of the system and expect max output.

I believe the 05 or 06 GM started using the variable turbo. Same turbo in the 6.0 ford powerstroke. Really good turbo with hardly any lag. I rebuilt mine and upgraded the turbo wheel with a wicked. I can really feel a difference in pulling a heavy load.

Another intriguing video. All that data logging could be overload unless you have the nouce to understand what the interplays mean. When there was nothing much in the cold side, the hot side was the epiphany, basically less back pressure which = less temp, wasted energy and the turbine is not working as hard which would help with reliability/durability... and of course a lot more headroom for more performance. As for the lag, loosening the torque convertor would be an all round negative for fuel consumption?. What about some sort of anti lag such as a shot of compressed air onto the turbine similar to a shot of nitrous. There was a a drag racer running a Buick engine who used to shoot Nitrous into the periphery of the turbine housing to spool it up and apparently it used to hit almost too hard off the line.Dual effect of turbine impingement plus the boost in exhaust volume when it went through the engine. Koennigsegg do a similar thing with their cars I believe using a carbon fibre storage tank. I also drove a propane supplemented heavy duty truck which had a much better response. Two fuel systems of course but a good way of accelerating without the hated hated rolling coal. Just for giggles maybe a side by side comparo of a VGV turbo vs normal would be interesting for response and restriction.
@norsebavarian1941
@norsebavarian1941 4 года назад
I certainly appreciate the monumental task of research, engineering and sheer knowledge that went into this video series but at the end of the day in my opinion its a bit like the difference between a swiss army knife and a scalpel. I think in my truck I would rather have the VG turbo which does lots of things well rather than a larger non-VG turbo which only really does one thing well and that is to compress as much air as possible for max output. At the end of the day, max output will break things.

Hi gale. I have a Mercedes OM651 2014 Vito. It only has 310nm torque. Mercedes do a twin turbo version that has 500nm. What would you suggest to up the torque from 310 to 400nm with the single turbo? I’ve not come access much Mercedes tuning in this manner?? Is it all in the tune? Or simply freeing up the intake and exhaust to liberate the power... I’ve freeded up 60-70hp from my Toyota 1JZ with stock boost and ECU with intake and exhaust mods...

@andyharman3022

Gail's killing ME with anticipation for every installment of this series! The big improvement of the Precision Turbo over stock is lower turbine inlet pressure. The stocker was choked at 510 HP, and the Precision is just starting to sing. The larger turbine exducer diameter is the key here. The intercooler is doing a great job of basically pulling all of the compressor temperature rise out of the charge air, but 1.3 psi seems like a lot of pressure drop. I think Gail will be doubling up on the intercoolers to get max power. I think he'll get to 700 HP with it.

Could you make the exhaust side a little smaller say 70mm happy between the stock and the 75 mm that would spin the turbo up faster and give more more rpms to the turbo witch would I turn spin the intake side up so you would get more volume at lower rpms?

It would be interesting to have as a future test 2 Precision turbos on the dynmax something like a 45mm and a 65 mm so that the smaller turbo would help to have the additional throttle response.

Hmmm... What about adding a "Mat sensor" that detects a commanded WOT & uses a jet of compressed air or brief blip of NOS to pre-spool the turbo from the intake side? I'm curious to see what result that would have on the data. (I'll admit I got the idea from Cletus McFarland's treatment of his Cummins 12V swapped Ford Galaxie. -- it seems to limit turbo lag to 1/10 sec.)
@andyharman3022
@andyharman3022 4 года назад
Do a search for Gale Banks' top diesel dragster from years ago. He was using NOS to eliminate lag on that car to the point that it leapt off the starting line with no hint of lag or smoke.
