This is the comparison video that I've been waiting for a long time.! Thanks for making this one. I am having Comandante with Red Clix upgrade, specially use it for espresso (I don't have any other brew set). I'm really really impressed by it grind precision and accuracy, with red clix upgrade I can get my espresso extraction exactly as I want it. Although it may have strain my hand for a while, but having great awesome espresso later really made my day.

Also with my Kinu 47 classic after I've made my coffee, I sit in front of the telly with a paper towel cleaning the Kinu bowl and grinder outlet, I then twirl the kinu watching the handle go around and around, and listening hum of the gear mechanism..its very satisfying,

I got a Kinu M47 Phoenix a few weeks ago and it is honestly amazing. Build quality is great despite the switch to some plastic parts. Such a great review thank you Alternative brewing 🙏🏻 I’ve been thinking of buying the comandante or the phoneix for weeks now so this couldn’t have come at a better time. Grinder to be used exclusively for a flair pro and because of the lack of need to keep adjusting to other brewing methods and my love of the look of the c40 think I will just go with this. Even if the clicks have trouble dialling in which I have yet to hear from anyone, I will also scale down 50% further with red clicks. Thanks so much again 👍😊

most things with it are, i feel. wouldn't mind having markings for the grind size, but I (for example) know that I'm at 21 clicks right now. easy to adjust from there whenever i need to. (it's also kinda thoughtful, i suppose, that each full handle rotation is 12 clicks... like a clock! very cute)

Great video! Thanks for such a detailed comparison. I've been looking at getting either of these for a while now and I have a question that doesn't seem to be addressed by the reviews I've seen. What is the diameter difference between the bodies of the two? You mentioned that the Comandante can be a bit strenuous when in use (and I do think my hands are pretty small haha) so I'm worried whether it'll be too uncomfortable in the long run. For reference I guess, I'm planning on using these for daily pour over use with the goal of going up to espresso once I've got the budget for it. Been using a Porlex mini as well and while that's been okay, there's definitely a difference in grind consistency since the outer burs wobble around. Thanks for your time if you read this and have a great day!
@AlternativeBrewing
@AlternativeBrewing 3 года назад
It's reasonably different. The Comandante has width of 6.5cm across and the Kinu's is 5cm. Which makes a significant difference to the diameters. The Kinu would be more comfortable and is easier to grind with

I have the Phoenix as well and although I'm overall very satisfied, I'm still a little annoyed with how to get the ground espresso out. I would be grateful for any hacks/tricks that make this step easier and cleaner. The amount of static seems to depend on the beans I'm grinding. I think dryer beans are more prone to static. It could help to add a droplet of water before grinding.

I'd love to see a comparison between the Kinu and the Apollo. I have an Apollo, which is built like a tank, grinds beautifully, and has IMO the best adjustment design. However, with hard beans, it requires an absolutely vice-like grip, and if your hands are too wet or too dry, it just slips. The screw-on collector is also prone to denting and jamming with fines. Now, if your preferred coffee beans are not rock-like, it's all pretty great, and a toothbrush keeps the threads clean.

@@ComandanteGrinder Dear Team, Commandate Grinders, I have never expressed that Commandante Grinders as a company is not adequate with its after sales or services. What I have mentioned is only about choosing between a fragile Commandante grinder for specific reason as follows:- The catch cup is made of glass which is a fragile part-1, The crank handle which is attached with fragile part-2 a plastic plate to avoid popcorn of coffee beans while grinding which can easily crack if not handled adequately Vs. Kinu M47 Classic Hand Grinder it is robust because it doesn't have any glass or plastic parts in it which makes it like a tank solid product. My opinion and suggestions are honest and purely based on the basis of my personal product experience and I would like to honestly mention here that if one likes to travel a lot and want a travel friendly hand coffee grinder then the Commadante C40 Nitro Blade Grinder is the best option available in market because of its light weight and if you dont have any issues of carrying weight while traveling then I would say Kinu M47 Classic takes over because of its robustness and unbeatable build quality.

@@vermaanvesh Hi there Anvesh! Thanks for your reply, and sorry if we misunderstood your intended message :). We understand the fear of the glass being fragile, although we find them very robust in practise, and wonderful due to being a 100% natural material that is ultra-easy to clean. A second glass is always provided in case of an emergency ;). We also understand the criticism regarding the plastic on the crank :). Actually this was a known issue with older production models. We have since switched compounds for the lid and solved the issue in newer production models, and offer free replacements to users who've had issues with the lid :). @AlternativeBrewing
@AlternativeBrewing 2 года назад
Great question - the burr geometry will have an impact on the overall performance and quality of the grinds produced. Pour Over burrs are said to create less of a grind distribution - so this means more clarity, sweetness and brightness in the cup. Perfect for pour over and filter coffee. Whereas the standard burrs - create a few more fines - which is no too detrimental to pour overs - but does equally benefit espresso too.

$600????? For a HAND GRINDER??? This is truly a rich person's hobby. Here I thought it was just good coffee. Apparently, that comes at an INSANE price. Good god.

people go out and spend $500 on Beyoncé tickets, $30 for cocktails, $900 on Prada jeans and $120,000 for BMW's that will deprecate halve there value within 5 years to impress society an people they don't know. if you understand the process behind good coffee , its well worth the money . Great Coffee is one of life's simple pleasures.

@@gabrielzachary5804 As far as I can tell, there's nothing simple when it comes to good cup of coffee. If it truely was simple, anyone could make amazing coffee with a pestel and mortar and a pot of boiling water. I've used pre ground Lavazza qualita Oro in a Bialetti for years, but I thought I could and should take my coffee game further by pounding beans as I do spices, but here I am, researching the Comandante.

If I’m a professional barista (or entering competitions...) and my grinder is an income-generating tool, yeah... go for the Kinu. Other than that, $250 is already an exorbitant enough amount of money to spend on a grinder. $400 plus would interfere with my actual enjoyment of the coffee.

After much deliberation-and many videos like these-i went with the comandante, even though I prefer the look of the kinu with its less prominent branding and sleek steel exterior. It just seems that the comandante is better for pour over, and that was my biggest concern. Like sushi, espresso is something I’ll never make at home

There is also another aspect not mentioned which I think could be decisive for some people: availability. Depending on where you live, one grinder could cost substantially more than the other due to tax, shipping etc. For EU people the Comandante is easier to get than Kinu, from what I‘ve read in the US it‘s the other way around. Overall both these grinders are exceptional (in their league). Thanks for the great comparison!

100% agree - and thanks for watching 👍 it's the reason I don't really discuss the price because it's so variable around the world and want to focus more on the perceived value of the grinder more than the cost price.

@@s73v36ups, I mean plus is better. I have been using pro for a couple of months. The biggest problem of this model it takes time to take out grinded coffee from cup's thread. Magnetic cup should be much more comfortable. About the using range - try to find in internet pictures of recommended grinding steps for both models. . These cards suplly with new grinders. In my opinion they should be the same for both pro and plus.

Kinu is much better
@JulienGaudfroy
@JulienGaudfroy 3 года назад
Absolutely not. Having had both for three years, Comandante is superior flavorwise. At least with stock burrs, haven't tried the replacement pourover burrs, it seems many are not that happy with it but I can't say. All my best V60s have been with Comandante never with Kinu. And I have tried very hard with the latter. There just are more fines, and the extraction is longer. Final result, more bitterness, less body also than Comandante on average. Pro baristas go to finals with a Comandante often, how many with Kinu ? There is a reason most high level baristas agree. Although after solving their design flaws, Kinu is so nice to use though. The lever action and the open top are a thing of beauty, so easy to grind hence the superiority for everyday espresso use (although I find the Comandante tastes better too on espresso if you manage to find your ideal grind). Kinu open top also gives the nicest sound of all manual grinders. So nice to work with.
@charleswood5071
@charleswood5071 2 года назад
@@JulienGaudfroy Do you think that sifting out the fines might help to mitigate this? I'm completely sold on the Kinu in terms of design and build, but the lackluster pour-over reputation is holding me back. I'm in between the Comandante and the Kinu, if there's anything I could do to make the latter competitive with pour-overs I'd go for it in a second
@JulienGaudfroy
@JulienGaudfroy 2 года назад
@@charleswood5071 the shape of the grinds makes a big difference too, it isn't only the grinds. And the pourover replacement burrs of the Kinu aren't good either. If you make mainly pourover and want the absolute best of complexity, acidity and sweetness, no hand grinder is on Comandante level. If you also do espresso and want a good design with the best of both worlds, K Plus is the closest, good design and very fast grinding. Kinu M47 just isn't worth it in the cup.
@charleswood5071
@charleswood5071 2 года назад
@@JulienGaudfroy oof, thanks for the response though. Would you say that the Kinu is overall bad, or just not as stellar as other grinders like the K Plus? Would you rank it on the same level as a Porlex or Hario Skerton?
@JulienGaudfroy
@JulienGaudfroy 2 года назад
@@charleswood5071 it is bad for its price imo. But it still is one of the good ones. For sure Comandante is the best, then K Plus, then Kinu is in the next bunch. The problem also is Kunu made the M47 with burrs not suited for pourover, and nearly everyone I trust who has tested their replacement pourover burrs find them very underwhelming. For me there is an obvious conception flaw here that doesn't make sense when you spend that much money on a product, several times. And I didn't mention how I also had the original flawed magnet system and had to pay 50 euros to upgrade to the new system because the original magnets kept failing and falling and wasting my expensive beans...
