I was just there a few days before this was posted! I was not aware of the 2 different sides until I arrived, Apple Maps took me to the platform side. It's an ok view, but I agree hiking into the canyon is the much better option. The platform side was good to use the rest room and grab a snack before driving over to the other side to take the hike.

Do you know if we could rent a foldable bicycle on arrival to Reykjavik, to keep in the trunk of our rented car? And could one bicycle on the paths that you walked? My arthritis is so bad in my knees that the bones themselves are starting to show nontrivial wear, so walking more than 500 m - 1 km per day simply isn't doable anymore. But bicycling is much easier on all joints, so that might well work.
