Neil deGrasse Tyson is an American astrophysicist, author, and science communicator. I think it's really interesting how both of you are trying to step beyond your own bias and actually listen to one another... but then it turns out to be a real struggle because you both so much want the other person to see your point. I agree with both of you. As it stands, the almost mythical status of trans individuals is making it nearly impossible to criticise their place in society, so there I agree with you. And I agree with Neil that it is now upon us all to solve these problems moving forward, by leveling the playing field altogether. Maybe in fifty years we will look back at this and think it's all just as silly as the boys and girls entrance to the school. New solutions will be found. Thank you for bringing light to this topic and speaking to people with very different views about it.

@@hannekezijlmans6578 we did even the playing field when we made women only spaces/sports/shortlists that’s how women got opportunities, it’s men that want to be women that are pushing into these areas causing the problem. Trans women are not the same as women. Pretending so only hurts real women. Have a trans category and let’s see how many trans athletes sign up shall we? If you transition to another sex you are a trans person in a separate class from man and woman if there are actually so many of them it won’t be a waste of time and money to accommodate them in their own spaces/sport/shortlists. That won’t happen because the trans movement has been hijacked by fetishists and perverts and if they can’t spy on or intimidate women then what’s the point.

I never comment on anything, but here goes. You guys did a spectacular job, but I really do wish you gave more examples when he asked because there are a ton. Besides sports, bathrooms and Parliament there is also: DV/SA centers, group therapy, AA or sensitive support groups, any type of lesbian group, scholarships, changing rooms, jails, prison, rehab, inpatient, hospital settings, birthing situations, dating apps, friendship apps, sororities, living situations, group homes, it messes up crime statistics, any kind of data collection, medical studies, it clogs up services meant just for women. On and on and on.

Basically, he was trying to bury the fundamental disagreement via tangents and hypotheticals that distract from the actual heart of the issue. When the host tried to direct him back to the central issue at hand, Tyson cried about being interrupted. When the host questioned one of the many tangents Tyson was using the bury the central issue, Tyson interrupted him.

i had an ongoing "debate" with a couple of these parrots who kept coming back to "why do you care" after their accusations of phobia and bigotry did not achieve the desired and expected withering away and dying. i asked chat gp t if that was a reasonable argument - "In a debate, "Why do you care?" is generally not considered a reasonable argument on its own. This response may be perceived as dismissive or evasive rather than addressing the actual points or issues raised during the debate. Debates are meant to be an exchange of ideas and arguments, and simply asking why someone cares does not contribute to the substance of the discussion."

They did that with black people on buses and water fountains. Wanting segregation is a weird ass thing. Neil is absolutely right on this and actually has such a fresh perspective on it. He doesn't care for trans people and he doesn't care for transphobes. They’re notorious for grandstanding and pushing their way into nearly every facet of life. She was a high school volleyball player who was severely injured when a ball spiked by a trans opponent struck her in the face with such force, that it knocked her to the ground and left her with brain damage and paralysis on her right side, which ended her dreams of getting a volleyball college scholarship and has made it difficult to walk without falling.

Is it though? It's not much harder than fixing the toilet issues...the trans population is a tiny minority of the whole population...less than 1%? How hard it must be to have small sections of prisons for trans women and trans men (separated of course) only.

Yes, it's extremely troubling. There are an increasing number of cases of violent sexual assaults from males who only identify as women in prison. Or preexisting transwomen convicted of sexual assault and violence against women who are still put in women's prisons. Whether or not this is "easy to solve" according to some internet armchair theorist is another matter that in no way calls into question the reality of the terrible harms actively and increasingly being done in women's prisons today.

Btw, I am sure you are equally troubled by trans people who suffer and even commit suicide because forced to share cells and showers with inmates of their old gender...you are, right? That’s considerate, and if it’s a joke, it is funny. The key thing to remember is that being an expert in a field it does not mean that one is naturally right. Because someone is well educated does not mean that they are knowledgeable on the subject. The truth is, Tyson’s arguments, about many things, are suspect. Ye exactly because if gender can be based on how I present myself. If a man wants to wear makeup and make his jaw look smaller and eyes look more feminine. And be a woman. Why can't someone apply dark tan and makeup to darken or lighten their skin to present as a different race, if they FEEL they identify with another culture more and want to be Asian for example... like plenty white people love Asian culture say. And may dress in the way the trends are popular over there and act a certain way. It is relatively simple to create private spaces in a bathroom, the real issue is the underlying principle of 'women (female) only spaces.' I don't care about bathrooms. I care how you can prove voyeurism and exhibitionism - known sexual crimes committed overwhelming against women - if you have locker rooms, spas, and other spaces where anyone can 'self identify' as a woman and enter. I am still waiting for someone, anyone, to give me a definition of the word 'woman' that neither relies on biology nor on stereotypes yet still retains enough meaning you could legally classify someone as one. Maybe I'll consider the 'trans women are women' point as possibly valid if anyone could do it.

Because your strength in athleticism is based not on if you have a willy or not, but based on testosterone. Some people without Willy's have crazy high T, some people with them have very very low T. Separating by gender(which has a correlation) rather than by hormone (which is a root cause) is silly

@craptree however, the science on how testosterone effects muscle mass and bone density in trans athletes is incomplete. Bone density in some studies appear to be preserved after gender affirming hormone therapy. Having a higher bone density is an advantage that male athletes have over females in contact sports. Muscle mass is another issue. Studies have shown that trans female athletes have retained their muscle mass outside of a 5% reduction in the thighs. These are the true indicators of strength; muscle mass and bone density, and both seem to be preserved in the male athlete regardless of hormones therapy. If there was a 100 ng/dl T-level,168 lb division in boxing, just imagine the wreckage that would occur if someone as talented as Canelo Alvarez wanted to compete there on a quest to become a 20 division champion. In every case, if the science concerning retention of muscle mass and bone density has merits, there isn't a woman (Shields is the best they have now at 168) that could compete with him. And I find it ironic that in an age where we're supposed to be recognizing the accomplishments of women in certain spaces, we are still prepared to allow men to invade those spaces and take those accomplishments away.

Regardless I'd love to know - if you believe all that matters is bone density and muscle mass, why is this not measured. Easily done these days via Dexa scans. Some AMAB do really have smaller frames (I'm one of them), and the opposite is also true, some AFAB that are as big as many guys I know. I'm sure you remember that poor women who was accused of being trans due to her body type, t levels and strength, but it turned out to be total BS Whether you have a penis or a vagina is not the absolute way to define fairness, when there are, clearly documented exceptions. By using science and looking at what matters, we can also be inclusive of all people regardless their gender or body type etc etc

@@craptree they aren't measured as qualifications in sport because sport is classified in weight and gender. Genetics are a part of sport. Speed, power, fast twitch muscle fiber, endurance, height, all of these things are what separates athletes into subcategories, and we root for athletes based on those subcategories. We call them "positions" in team sport. The fast twitch, quick footed guys are strikers, running backs and receivers. The tall, powerful guys are linebackers, forwards and centers. But the purest form of sport is a contest between two individuals. And we romanticize these contests as speed vs power in boxing. Height and reach vs the indomitable will and ring IQ. We place athleticism in the same arena as intellect and intangibles in order to have a contest within that dichotomy. What we don't do is place genetic males in the same arena as genetic females in order for them to be pulverized. There's no sport in that, and it calls into question the morality of it all. But I stand firm in the rational idea that if bone density (which is directly correlated to muscle strength) and muscle mass (a clear indicator of muscle strength) is retained after hormone therapy, then it is an unfair, and potentially dangerous advantage in certain sports.

My take on this is a little different. I think the real zeitgeist of our time is immaturity. Seems like much of pop-culture glorifies immaturity and ignorance over maturity and knowledge. So you get folks with weird notions like you are describing. A lot of kids benefit from having good parents that know how to help them adjust to world's realities and mature as a result. But I think there are slightly more parents that do NOT do that right now. And it is where ALL the craziness is coming from.

I think the way the guest was talking was, why are there female spaces, sports and prisons? Why are we in an advanced society still categorising people based on genitals observable at birth? Why haven't we came up with a better system like in his example, boxing's weight class, or Paralympic athletes class system, a system based on bodily functions or some other advanced system? A 4 foot 8 tall woman does not have the same lung capacity, strength, heart size and blood flow as a 6 foot 2 woman. So why are we still putting them in the same sports and prisons? Spaces, should we really be categorising people for changing rooms, toilets, showers, prayer rooms based on genitals present at birth and not some other metric like current genitals present or again something more advanced?

Scientists are humans like any other they have always been bias and had egos. The scientific field in reality is probably one of the most toxic when it comes to opinion. Think about dedicating 30-40 years of your life to an idea just to have someone else come say your wrong or in reverse think about if you proved something that was accepted by science to be true for 100 years by thousands of other scientists to be wrong how much push back you would get. Compound all of that with if your wrong you could lose your income source.

There are some rare chromosomal anomalies, but for the most part (99.995%), biological sex is binary: male XY and female XX. Changing external genitalia via surgery doesn't change this. A female's fertility cycle, physiology and biochemistry is very complex. Yes, gender is more fluid, and yes that's many associations many of which are cultural. But still gender and biological sex are two very different things.
