Mabuhay! 안녕하세요! Ako si Jinyong!
What food do you think that can represent the Philippines? Adobo? Sisig? Sinigang?
Well, of course, one will have different opinion each other. But I believe that Adodo is definitely one of the foods that can represent the Philippines.
I and my Korean friends have been trying many different kinds of Filipino dishes ,such as Tocino, Longganisa, Pancit canton, but I've recently found out that we've not yet tried one of the most popular Filipino dishes.
Thus, today in the video, I'll introduce Adobo to my fellow Korean friends. But! Not only introducing the food itself, but also the origin of Philippine Adobo.
How Koreans will react to one of Pinoy's favorite dishes, Adobo? Will they like it or not?!
Tara at tingnan ang kanilang mga reaksyon!
If you wanna know how my friends reacted to them, let’s go and find out together!

I’m a Korean who really loves the Philippines 🙂
And that’s the reason why I started to learn TAGALOG!
Though I’m really not good at speaking Tagalog now, I would like to speak really fluently like a native speaker someday!
I made this channel to introduce Filipino culture to all the foreigners including my Korean friends. (and Korean culture to Filipino as well!)
I really hope people know Philippines more and more by watching my videos!

I like how you all instantly understood that filipino dishes are mostly designed to be eaten with rice. alone they're either too strong in flavour. in fact, in a meal, the rice is the main event, and the dish, or "ulam" is designed to give flavour to the rice.

Like Korea's Bulgogi, Adobo can easily be customized to fit the taste and texture preference of the person who will be eating it. Add sugar if you want it sweet. More Soy Sauce or Salt if you want it to be salty, more vinegar if you want it to have a more sour profile. Some locals even add coconut milk. I personally add sugar, honey, and oyster sauce because i prefer it to be sweeter, have a thicker sauce, and have the saltiness rise above the vinegar more. I also fry the meat first. No matter how you do it, as long as it is cooked/marinated with soy sauce and vinegar, we Filipinos will call it Adobo.

Adobo was already made by tribes in the Philippines. Its started with main ingredients like soy sauce in china, chicken, chili and other spices to make food being natural preserve.

I think one main reason why they dont seem to appreciate adobo is either of their personal preferences or how adobo is cooked. You see, it varies on the person and how that person cooks the course meal. But I do appreciate you guys initiating interviews & taste test to our known local dish Adobo.
@diopatra80

there different versions of adobo, depends where you from. you can also adjust it base on your preference. in northern philippines, our adobo, dont have sauce, only the oil from the meat. i also taste adobo with pineapple in it. some adobo are sweet, there is the white adobo.

The good thing about adobo is you can cook loads of it and keep it in the fridge for a very long time so when you don’t have the time to cook or dine out, you just get some and heat it up and cook rice... BAM! Adobo meal is served. Lol Usually, some keep their adobo in the fridge 4-5 days (unless it has coconut milk, it goes bad quickly). But in some places in the Philippines like Batangas and Pampanga, their adobo stays up to 2 months if it’s prepared and stored correctly. The taste gets even better in time.

To make adobo more flavorful, you must add lots of whole grained pepper and onions aside from the bay leaf. Cook it in a medium-low fire. Once the meat is cooked, add the soy sauce then vinegar, let it simmer until the meat absorb it. Once absorb, add red sugar (not the muscovado sugar). Let it cooked until the natural oil come out from the meat.

We have different kinds of Adobo. You can have them try some of these: - Sweet Adobo (usually with chicken breasts/pork). This version of Adobo has pineapple bits and pineapple juice o make it sweet. - Fried/Dry Adobo - we usually eat this with beer. Served as "pulutan" (foods accompanied with beer) - Chicken gizzard Adobo - As the name implies. :) - Adobong KangKong (Water Spinach) - Usually served as a side dish. - Adobong Sitaw with beef/pork - Long beans with pork/beef bits. You can also add fried tofu (tokwa in Filipino). Also served as a side dish - Adobong Bisaya - The adobo version in Central Philippines (Visayan region). This adobo is more yellow/red since they add Achuete (Annato in English). This version is less salty and more tangy cuz of the added ingredient. - Spicy Adobo - Adobo with siling labuyo (Cayenne Pepper) - If you want spice in you life. :)

I think sinigang is the most appropriate, though. It represent us Filipinos everytime. The sour soup suits the rice perfectly, and whenever you have no complete ingredients, you can just use kangkong only (some kind of spinach) and the soup.

To give more background, Native Filipinos used vinegar and soy sauce as it helps prolong the meat and prevent spoilage due to the tropical climate hence it became the recipe that we now know as Adobo. 😊

From what I know, Adobo is a derived word from spanish word "adobar" which means "to marinate". Filipinos used to cook adobo with only vinegar (which is now known as adobong puti). Soy sauce was introduced by the Chinese traders/immigrants and was added later. The spanish named the dish adobo because they find the color of adobo similar to a marinated cooking process they had, but the ingredients to the marinate are different aside from salt, garlic and vinegar. (Correct me if I'm wrong. This is only a stocked knowledge I gathered from museums.)

When you pour the vinegar to adobo do put the cover.. Let it simmer... So that it wouldn't taste sour...

Prefer both because there's also a recipe where pork and chicken are mixed. 😄 PS. Really appreciate your effort to introduce the Filipino culture to your colleagues. And you surely know how to cook. I'm envious. 😂 Really love your videos as I really love to eat as well. Maraming salamat! 😊

That's true. Adobo without rice is salty. But you combine it. It's taste good.🙈

There"s another adobo variations wherein you can mix both chicken & pork. Use less vinegar so it will not be sour and you can put sugar if you like it sweet.

That’s true. You need more rice even for small amount of Adobo because that’s idea why that’s too salty. Filipinos love rice so much. It’s not a meal if there’s no rice in a meal. But if you wanna eat more and have limited budget, go for adobo. You can eat at least five cups of rice for a single serving of Adobo. That’s why that’s my favorite. Either chicken, pork, or even string beans.
