Fun fact: the animal choice for the Five is not random. They are styles of Chinese martial arts. Also there is no panda style but there is a dragon style, which fits with Po.
the fact he thirsted over angelina jolie in maleficent one and two, then had an existential furry crisis over tigress, and didn’t try to justify it by mentioning her as the voice, was a missed opportunity and a half. we would’ve accepted the excuse.
@@beatrizmendes8431 If you're looking for the context, he mentioned it (more like ranted on it lmao) in his Divergent video (Beer and a Movie series). Entertaining video as always. Edit bc I initially thought it was mentioned in his Hunger Games vid but I checked and it was Divergent instead
Somebody should tell Dylan that pandas are literally one of the least capable animals on this planet. They're so dumb and just ready to unalive themselves, it's ridiculous. So it makes sense that they all think it's weird that he is the dragon warrior. Which makes his transformation throughout the movie so much more satisfying. He doesn't defeat Tai Lung with traditional Kung Fu and fighting, he does it in a way only a Panda could. He does it his way and he is just unapologetic himself....there is literally no secret ingredient. I love this movie so much...it is pure serotonin. Edit: Also this is not me dissing Pandas, they're cute and should be protected but it is a fact that they're giant idiots with no self preservation whatsoever 😅
The bad guy's teacher DID have a role in him turning evil though! He loved him too much and fed his ego and pride, filled his head with ideas that he would one day be guaranteed to be the dragon warrior, and that he was the best student he had ever had.
yeah, what i really appreciated about kung fu panda is the subtlety. they show glimpses of the past and you can piece together what made tai lung the way he is. it's never explicitly stated that shifu fed his pride and made his existence dependent on the dragon warrior status but the information is right there
@@thuydungie Yeah exactly, you can see it in what they do show you and I really appreciate this kind of story telling. Not everything has to be explicitly thrown in your face for it to be clear~
The teacher may have had a role but that never means he meant for his student to turn physically violent. While I understand the villain's anger for being set up to be the dragon warrior to only be disappointed for not being selected, that never means lashing out that anger physically against someone to the point of hurting and almost killing his teacher. I think the teacher took too much responsibility for his actions while the villain took none. I think he blames himself for not noticing some red flags from the villain prior and wishes he could have guided him in a better path. Unfortunately, in the end, it's the villain's choice to attack.
@@kiramcpheron7426 You said he's literally a panda when he's not. He's just called a panda. So it does affect your statement. You can say that he's literally called a panda.
2 things 1. Shifu is a red panda 2. Tai lung is the most well written villain in the series. The true lesson of the relationship between Shifu and Tailung is how much a parents expectations can affect their children. You said they didn’t show Shifu playing a role in Tailungs turning evil, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Shifu raised tailung as his son. He raised him to believe that it was his destiny to become that dragon warrior so when you spend your entire life with your parent figure/the person you look up to most telling you that you are destined to become something and you believe them going as far as to put every ounce of your soul into living up to their expectations, only for one day they to tell you that it’s actually not your destiny is extremely traumatizing. Tailung was told his entire life that he was destined to become the dragon warrior and the fact that it wasn’t true was simply something he could not face as it would be the same to tell him that his life was a lie. Shifu didn’t really learn his lesson either as when we see how he trained the furious 5 we see that they all also hold the belief that it was their destiny to have one of them become the dragon warrior. However, the difference is that Shifu raised Tailung under much more pressure with higher expectations while he was a lot colder to say tigress during her training. Po represents a change in Shifu as once Shifu finally changes his expectations for what the dragon warrior should be he is finally able to see the potential Po had it really is beautiful. Po in the movie basically represents defying expectations and the scroll being a mirror is to say that everyone is perfect the way they are Tailung couldn’t see this though because at this point he was clouded by the betrayal of his father/mentor.
@@vinnicinhus44 agreed I was just pointing out the lesson within Shifu and Tailung relationship that being how important it is to raise a child with humility Tai lung probably always had some bad in him but I think it was the way Shifu raised him that corrupted him raising him to believe that his value was higher than it actually was and when oogway corrected his view of himself Tailung snapped
@Little8mac Apparently Dylan went to a college that closed down after being open for only 10 or 20 years because it went bankrupt and he's been salty ever since because he says that he didn't learn anything and the college basically scammed him of his money.
Dylan blaming the fact that he doesn’t know that a snake is called a serpent because he went to a fake college will forever be his excuse for anything he doesn’t know 😂
Dylan not knowing that pandas are, indeed, the dumbest bear out there is the funniest thing ever. Pandas have no interest in reproducing, they don’t even like finding mates, and so they endanger their own species. Also, they are meant to be carnivores but they… choose *not* to?? Their bodies can’t digest cellulose properly, yet they are hanging out with bamboo (which is literally bathed in cellulose), so they have really low energy and are relatively weak. So yeah, Po’s really as physically challenged as he’s made out to be 😭
There is actually an explanation of why Tai Lung is still strong after 20 years. In the movie, Tigress says that the dragon warrior can survive with nothing but the dew of a single ginkgo leaf and the energy of the universe, so it makes sense that Tai Lung is jacked cause he was potentially the dragon warrior.
Dylan continually saying "he's a bear, bear's are fierce"...he needs to watch compilations of pandas being clumsy. I find it hard to believe they're real animals, it honestly just looks like a human in a panda suit 😂
The only reason why they are like that is because of the bamboo they eat. Bamboo isn't actually good for them and slows them down. If they didn't they'd be pretty dangerous and aggressive.
the story of tai lung is acutely quite sad cause shifu made him believe he was the one meant to be the dragon warrior and pretty much brainwashed him into it ( like his name "tai lung" means great dragon). So Tai lung being dismissed of the title of dragon warrior makes him believe he is being robbed of something he was suppose to inherit in a way and that he is just a disappointment to his father figure.
19:06 Tai Lung had plenty of time for *meditation* which is an important part of kung fu, especially in fantasy when you get to the "magical" moves like Tai Lung used when he turned the Furious Five's bodies blue for a second
Dylan has to be one of the most consistent content creators I’ve ever seen. Uploading a movie commentary every Monday without fail for several years is very impressive.
Dylan basically predicting the movie but still having a great time shows that tropes and writing predictable/obvious story beats are not inherently bad.
It’s kinda reminds me of what George RR Martin says about storytelling, specifically mysteries. You write a mystery in which the butler’s the killer. You plant clues to show the butler did it. Say you show the story to your friend, the friend guesses halfway through the butler’s the killer. What are you to do? You decide to make the maid the killer. But you don’t change the rest of the story. Wrong move. All that build up shows that the butler is the killer. It doesn’t make sense that the maid did it. In short, a story with proper build up, however predictable, is better than a story trying to be unpredictable for unpredictability’s sake. Story beats and archetypes exist for a reason, as seen in The Hero of a Thousand Faces, we see the same stories across cultures across generations with different tweaks throughout. Idk why I said all that, Hahha. I guess I have George RR on the brain 🤣 Anyway, I agree with what you said.
I think the reason why you didn't hear much of a sound effect for when Shifu hit the pillar is probably because due to his weight. Shifu is definitely way lighter than Po, so it kinda makes sense that you wouldn't hear more of an impact from him hitting the pillar than Po getting pounded into the earth.
I know we only get edited parts of Dylan but like... low key, this man is hella smart. This is the first video in a LONG time where he's gotten a word wrong. He keeps using words, looking them up, and being super proud he's using them correctly - but also Dylan is incredibly good at picking apart the underlying themes and motivations of characters in these commentaries. He says he's concerned he's getting dumber, but honestly, he seems pretty well educated in his chosen field of study to me.
I think that's one of my favorite parts about Dylan. He's genuinely really smart but he's so down to earth and funny that he never actually rubs it in anybody's faces. It's just another one of his hilarious and awesome qualities.
Snow leopards are probably the rarest of the big cats. They are found in south and central asia. Kinda makes sense they chose a snow leopard instead of a tiger, which was already taken, but also being rare and jaguar-like.
tigress is a tiger because the furious five are based on the animal forms in kung fu. I agree that snow leopard suited tai lung tho cause jaguars are from south- and central america
When they're eating together Tigress says something like "it is said that the dragon warrior can survive eating nothing more than... (can't remember the line)" so I think that's a little hint of why Tai Lung is still in good shape even if they fed him little food, he was trained to be the dragon warrior after all.
conspiracy theory: Dylan has already seen all these movies but he forgets that he has seen them so that's why he predicts everything. Dylan does not predict..... he just remembers
Hi Dylan! I’ve been watching your channel since Dylan will not Participate was started. I just wanted to let you know how much you have impacted my life, anytime I’m going through a bad time your videos have always been there to cheer me up. Thank you for everything you do Dylan!
This whole "I am a professional movie watcher" kinda started as a joke, but here Dylan is again predicting the whole ass plot of the movie 10 minutes in.
I was constantly checking the comments everytime he made *another* perfect prediction. I was almost expecting that he confessed he already watched it towards the end.
Dylan talking about Po being a bear who should be able to defeat anyone and forgetting that he is in fact a panda and they are a hazard to themselves 😂
@@checksanity I'm aware that Pandas are bears and that they can be dangerous as all wild animals. But Pandas are also one of the peaceful animals and him looking at grizzly and talk about Po is funny. And no one underestimating the story because Po (peaceful, clumsy panda) begin a Dragon Warrior is supposed to be funny and a that's the point of it.
i love how stylized the animation is in this movie! i think we’ve gotten so attracted to realism that we forgot how creative and exciting animation can be!
the whole kungfu panda trilogy is so well written, the first movie setting of the story line, second movie explaining the past and the third movie (my favorite) bringing everything together.
Dylan calling a jaguar cool but a leopard lame when they're arguably the most similar looking big cats out there is so funny to me! Like there's no doubt that if you showed him a picture of the two that he wouldn't be able to tell the difference
I think the reason one is called a leopard and the other a jaguar or panther is geography. If I remember correctly they're both members of panthera. Which is a family I believe. Even a black panther is actually a jaguar. I could be wrong so don't quote me on it.
@@acelovesdiyschristopher7023 yes! You’re right that they’re both members of panthera, which is a genus so they’re very closely related! But they are different species. What’s interesting is that, despite being two different species, panthers can be either a jaguar or a leopard!
@@acelovesdiyschristopher7023 (for cats/ Felids/Felidae) If it Roars, it is a Panther (Both Panthera and Pantherinae exist. All Panthera is within Pantherinae. I am referring to Pantherinae) (Jaguar, Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard...) (Snow Leopards are actually closer to Tigers than Leopards, so I petition we rename them Ice Tigers) If it purrs, it's Felinae/ a feline (Domestic cat, Cheetah, Cougar, Lynx, Ocelot, Servals...) (Cheetah's are not capable of roaring, but they can chirp. Cougars can't roar, but they try anyways, and it sounds like a human woman screaming in terror.)
Honestly this is my favorite role that Jack Black has done. Po was literally made for Jack Black and he fit him so well. I remember seeing this movie as a kid and it’s still 10/10
I really hope you continue this trilogy because the second Kung fu panda is arguably the best one. The villain is fantastic in my opinion and it would definitely be up your alley, Dylan.
Imagine if Dylan looked up the cast afterwards. The Tigress is voiced by Angelina Jolie. That makes the thing more awkward and I would've loved seeing his reaction finding out.
I don’t see how that makes it awkward. I would say that’s a double win since he has a kink for Maleficent who was also played by Angelina Jolie. I’m just upset Jacki Chan doesn’t get the hype he deserves for being in the Kung Fu Panda Franchise.
@@AdamIshak01 Awkward because he's still turned on by an animated figure. And we want to justify that because of who voices her? Well... Also Maleficent was live action Angelina. No doubts of getting hot there.
@@taurinstraiter2325 he’s mentioned before that he’s been turned on by both the animated and Kingdom Hearts Maleficent as well, and that the Descendants version of her is disappointing. He’s had a thing for the character even before Angelina played her in the live action, which probably just enhanced it, but it’s fitting how once again he’s interested in Jolie’s character. Not to mention having cat like features/qualities is already sexualized as well, i.e. Catwoman, all the sexy black cat, tiger, leopard, etc Halloween and role playing costumes. Tigress at least is a bit more human vs let’s say Kovu from Lion King 2 where a lot of people admit having feelings for him. After seeing some of those Kovu comments and Dylan’s Little Mermaid video, he’s so much more tame in this 😂 I feel like this is the one kink of Dylan’s that actually makes sense if anything lmao. Plus it’s Dylan, he thrives on awkward humor :)
Y’all better like the hell out of this video because I need to see Dylan’s movie commentary to Kung Fu Panda 2. That movie is a masterpiece and one of my favorite animated movies of all time. It has no right being as good as it is, so y’all better get him to watch it! NO RECOMMENDATIONS THOUGH!
I'm so glad movie commentary Mondays happen strictly on Mondays. Thank you Dylan for keeping the same energy with us as you do with the book you've been writing for the past 40 years
This is an INCREDIBLY detailed series. And they did REALLY well with it. It’s true you called a lot of story beats, even down to the lines, but this was such an intelligent film that blew people away. Shifu is a Red Panda. The Furious 5 are all after actual styles of combat, and each use them like their own animal instead of them being purely stand ins for people. And Po learned Dragon Style. Bears are among the best land predators on earth. Definitely the best one on our continent. Tigers are the true kings of the jungle over lions honestly. And I’d say Bears are in their wheelhouse. Pandas I feel are much LESS powerful bears, but they are bears nonetheless. So there is reason to doubt him since they are notoriously lazy animals. Crocodiles are hard to categorize. So let’s just hold them different as reptiles. Snow Leopards are ferocious no doubt, and 20 years goes to show how well he was trained. Reflexes don’t dull, and he was carrying those huge boulders on both sides when his body was trained to hold such weight. Not to mention the position he was forced in would require a strong core and legs. So yeah. Aside from the eating (which they state isn’t a factor for whatever reason) remaining in such a position of captivity actually could be seen as physically beneficial. Like a forced yoga pose. Plus subtle movements seem to be as much his specialty as brute force. And also Tai Lung was shown to be a prodigy with few flaws as he grew up in combat. So getting constantly praised kept him reaching higher and higher until he fell into a state of entitlement. Which is why he broke. The animation is stellar, and it’s totally worth watching the 2nd and 3rd movies.
Giant pandas aren’t actually scientifically classified as bears. It’s a misconception since they have the same shape. I’m not a scientist, but I think it might be bc pandas are vegetarian while bears are omnivores. But I’m not sure.
Okay. I just looked it up, and apparently they changed it since I was in school. Apparently, pandas are bears after all. Either that or my school has the same credibility as Dylan’s lol.
@@cowfreezer7099 I was about to get stuck between angry and INCREDIBLY amused I made a similar mistake actually. I came out with a video where I stated an orca was a whale in part of my analysis and was corrected that Orcas are the worlds largest dolphins. And I was so confused because they are literally nicknamed Killer Whales. Science is weird. And it’s hard to keep up. It changes RAPIDLY compared to math and English, so no one’s blaming anyone here.
@@Kaempfdog I think English, or well language in general, is closer to science in regards to how quickly it can evolve. That said, I get your point. :)
@@cowfreezer7099 Yeah, they’re grouped as a bear, and they’re the most docile, of all the *bears*. They can still seriously harm a person if they feel threatened. As you said, they’re still a wild animal. I wouldn’t describe them as lazy, so much as not aggressive unless provoked. They’re still built like carnivores, they just prefer bamboo and such. They will eat meat if their preferred food it scarce, so they’re still omnivores. It’s likely that tendency to underestimate panda’s, that it was the animal chosen.
I love that his point about him getting stronger while in prison makes sense, until you take into account the second movie and the meditation for inner peace which makes you stronger.
The fact that Dylan is guessing the emotional plot beats of this movie, right down to the correlation between the Dragon Scroll and the secret ingredient soup, is hilariously insane to me
I just realized at 23:18 you can see that the dragon scroll is reflective, showing that the person reading it is the secret, I love that attention to detail.
Kung Fu Panda 2 is by far my favourite in the franchise. Emotionally, the stakes are higher and the composition of the score is magic!! Hopefully we’ll get to see Dylan react to it 😊
if you do watch kung fu panda 2 i have a feeling you’re really gonna like the villain. he’s easily the coolest one of the three movies and his fighting style is so unique to the kind of animal he is
I feel like Dylan is going to like Shen (Kung Fu Panda 2’s villain) better than Tai Lung. I think they did a better job adding to Shen the emotional weight and ties that Tai Lung kinda lacked.
It's so much fun to have just recently found Dylan and have so many awesome, hilarious videos to watch. And then it's a bummer to be all caught up and have to wait a week or two for a new one. Sometimes I just go back and rewatch some favorites while waiting for a new video. Thanks for all the laughs Dylan!
Right? The way everyone praises him for guessing the plot and I’m over here like, “He’s seen it before though? He’s not some kind of movie-watching genius!” I guess people just like to think everything on the internet is real. 🤷♀️ Edit: Absolutely hilarious how everyone is personally replying to me instead of the OP who I was just agreeing with. Again, the internet is weird. 🤷♀️
@@HerHollyness or maybe its because when you watch a lot of movies/tv shows you get accustomed to common tropes and storylines. Kung Fu Panda is so god damn easy to see the direction of where its going if youve watched an average shounen anime or other martial arts movies. Its just as likely that Dylan is just good at predicting plot points as it is that he's faking his reactions.
Tbf the plot really isn’t that innovative to not make some good guesses (he also made some wrong ones) when you’ve got a good knowledge of storytelling structures and patterns after consuming a lot of fiction of any media. I read and watch a bunch too and his guesses reminded me of jokes and tropes that I saw employed in stories so I wasn’t surprised when it turned out he was accurate.
2:21 "insipients? What do you call a sapient? Marsupial? What's a snake? What's the family?" It's okay, it's not like a botanist could know a snake is a reptile! (Yes they could XD)
I think you should definitely check out the second Kung Fu Panda, I think you’d really enjoy the villain more and in my opinion the story and action is just as good if not better than the first film.
I’m so glad someone brought this up- not to mention all the animals are also native to China as well so all around canon and accuracy for these characters.
I'm literally dead rn When Po broke the vase containing the souls and Dylan said "He broke this plate thing." I said "Dylan that's not a freaking plate it's a vase." and as soon as he says "since we're on the subject" to which he immediately goes into a sponsership I actually facepalmed my desk and shouted "Oh my f-cking god Dylan." This man is too damn good with these things, I will never get over it.
Dylan calling Shifu a rat without realising he's a red panda is peak. Also...why the prejudice against snow leopards...I always thought they're kinda neat.
Right!?! Snow leopards are amazing and they’re so cute, but Jaguars are known to be insane and give no fucks- like the honey badger of cats. They will kill and hunt anything since they need at least 50 pounds of meat a day 😂 there’s a video of a Jaguar swimming to kill a croc, and then later fighting an anaconda and eating both. So I’m not gonna lie, I can kinda see why he wanted the villain to be a Jaguar, but Tai Lung as a Snowy leopard did great!
@@AdamIshak01 The choice of animals is likely limited to ones that are native to China. China has more snow leopards than anywhere else, which is fitting since snow leopards are known to be elusive and rare.
I kind of a agree with with the critique of tai lung’s voice, but the growls and the prison break scene do enough heavy lifting of making him intimidating, and the voice actually adds more personality imo. The “show me just how proud you are shifu” sounds so good with his voice
