Kyle Lowry: injury-prone, coach-killer ... Greatest Raptor Ever

Kyle Lowry will go down as a champion, a team player, and maybe the greatest Toronto Raptor ever. This is particularly amazing when you consider Lowry's former reputation: He was known for being grumpy, injury-prone, resistant to change, and he didn't particularly want to be a Raptor in the first place. Let's meet the old Kyles, and watch how they blended and adapted to become the Kyle history will remember.

It's honestly crazy to think that Kyle Lowry played for six seasons before joining the Raptors. In my head he joined the NBA as a 26 year old rookie in Toronto.

100% agree. If youre drafted to a Sacramento or Minny, most likely youre not going to be developed properly and theyll give up on you. Sucks for all the guys whoes careers were ruined because of bad management, development and franchise culture. Golden State were exactly the same until new management came in and fired a ton of people. They brought in brand new talent, changed the culture and the basis of development and drafting practices. Teams like Sacramento continue to suck for a reason. And whenever they do hit on a player in the draft, they trade them away, like Tyrese.

During the celebration on the court, Masai was barred from getting on the court. He was unfairly targeted by a man who clearly wanted to ruin this moment for him. Kyle Lowry is a prime example of what Masai Ujiri has done for the Raptors. If Kyle Lowry had been playing for the Raptors prior to Masai’s arrival, he would have left. Masai Ujiri’s tenure has changed the perception of playing for the Raptors. He has instilled a winning culture in Toronto. A culture of getting it done and doing right by their players. Developing the best players and taking advantage of the mistakes of other teams. Even when he made the Kawhi trade, there is a belief that the man at the top knows what he is doing. Now, when players join the Raptors, rather than thinking about a team that’s gonna be bad, make bad decisions and pay you less because of taxes, they now think of an organization that is going to do everything in their power to make you the best player you can be and if you don’t become your best, the man at the top knows how to get the most out of your value on the market. As a Raptors fan, I will forever argue that Masai more than anyone is responsible for the Raptors transition from basement dweller to one of the best organizations in the NBA. He deserves a statue when he retires.

I can already see the script for this. Part 1: The rise of Toronto basketball with Vince Carter heading the way featuring his cousin T-Mac, near misses against 76ers, and never reached the Final. Part 2: The Chris Bosh era, a step back, including in no particular order: Vince leaving, Subpar defense (including a particular deep dive into 81 points by one player aka Toronto has fallen), rising ranks, and first round exits, ended with Bosh dipping for Miami. Part 3: The Masai Ujiri era. Lowry-DeRozan, LeBronto, Kawhi, Nick Nurse, and eventually the championship. Edit: Name the Doc "We the North" and we are gucci.

2014 Lowry didn't have a "dreadful" performance. He averaged 21-5-5 on 57% TS. He had a huge 36 point performance in game 5 in a 2 point win against the Nets to take a 3-2 series lead and had a game high 28 points in the game 7 loss. His 2015 performance was the only year where he truly had a terrible performance the entire playoffs, and he was dealing with injuries, although some of that can be attribute with the kind of shape he was in at the time. -2016 he was terrible at first and great as the playoffs went along. -2017 he was overall good until he got injured. -2018 he was overall great and the best player on the team even though the team heavily disappointed against the Cavs. -2019 we know how that went and he was overall great especially in the ECF and Finals. -2020 he was overall great and the Raptor's best player in the playoffs.

He stuck out as a tough, tenacious, steady, consistent leader on the team. Since then I've been a fan. Good video, but I think it needs to delve deeply into how good prime Lowry actually was. This was a guy that in 2016 was 5th in the league in RPM, in 2017 was 4th in the league in RPM, in 2018 was 1st in the league in RPM, in 2019 was 5th in the league in RPM, and in 2020 was 6th in the league in RPM. He was the consummate floor general that was dominant on both ends. He never really got the credit for how impactful he was. He knew how to control the game, manipulate defenses, stifle offenses, take over games when needed. He doesn't get credit but he's one of the greatest 3 point shooters in NBA history and will likely finish top 10 all time in 3 pointers made. Any Raptor fan will know that Lowry was the engine of the team between 2014-2021 and the primary factor of why they were a perennial 50+ win team every season. He was basically like a mini 5'11 bulldog Lebron that could do it all. I'm sure people will disagree with me but I am easily taking prime Lowry over guys like Kyrie, Lillard, Wall, and Kemba during that era. If Lowry was able to play with a guy like Kawhi for more than 1 year there is no doubt in my mind he would have won multiple championships.

Lowry has been one of my favorite PGs in the league alongside Jrue Holiday and Ricky Rubio. He also stepped up in the 2019 Finals when his team needed him the most. Congrats, Champ!

Ppl who say lowry got carried that year didnt watch that finals series man, if one superstar could just will teams to championships without a perfect system around them lebron and kd would have 10 titles, that whole raptors team was expertly built to complement kawhis strengths AND weaknesses, without gasols defence on embiid they lose to the sixers. But lowry was the heart and soul of that team and it would not have won without him, the opening minutes of game 6 are proof of the raptors following lowry not the other way around. Kawhi was ofc the best player on that team and they dont win without him, but obviously thats why they traded for him. minimizing someones impact on a championship season simply because they arent an mvp level player is silly because teams dont win without selfless all star level leaders/glue guys like kyle lowry 😁

Don't see too many players like Lowry anymore. Stronger point guards who is arguably better on the less glamorous side of the floor. Still think DeMar was always the better Raptor but Lowry encompassed the most successful era of the Raptors.

It's a coin flip, Lowry deserves all the credit for being the leader the Raptors always needed and it would have been amazing to see what the two of them could've done without having to face LeBron every year. I have a soft spot for DeMar since I don't think the last 10 years happens with Lowry or Masai if he isn't there to improve the culture and be Toronto's first star that wasn't ashamed to play for the Raptors.

I feel like this episode could also have gone on just a little while longer, because at the very end of his first stint with the raptors (because he will be back to retire in a Toronto jersey), he got to spell out where he wanted to go, and he got to go on his terms.

As a Grizzlies fan, I’m so happy both him and Mike Conley found ways to become great. If we’d kept both it would’ve been like the Fox-Haliburton situation in Sacramento: 2 great unselfish players, but with a lot of overlapping abilities that would prevent them from reaching their full potential.
