I saw this design feature on the Zpacks Duplex tent so modified the bathtub on my Lanshan 2 Pro and it worked out to be a nice upgrade. It works the same on both Lanshan Pro 1 and 2 tents.

Great job, Justin! Love it man! 😄 And yep, pretty much exactly as you get with the zpacks 👍🏻 Nice little slab of rock in the middle of the vid too - always a good thing! 🤘🏻🤘🏻 Hope you're doing good my friend Dan

Here's a useful tip for you guys: I'd done something something similar on my Lanshan Pro but there is absolutely no need to sew laps on. I cut some strips from a silnylon repair patch, made them into loops which I glued on using silicone glue. Work perfectly. BTW - no need to buy expensive McNett-Silnet to seam seal. I use the cheapest CLEAR silicone caulking from the DIY/hardware shop 300ml as opposed to 28ml for Silnet. It is exactly the same silicone glue but a fifth of the price. Thin it with odour free white turps 1:1, should be the consistency of thick cream. I'd advise leaving the tent up after sealing for about 18 to 24 hours to allow the sealant to dry completely. PS: Silicone glue/caulking can be found in the bathroom or plumbing section of any DIY store. It is made in white, black, grey or clear so double check you buy "CLEAR". I use a thinish mix (1:1) as the sealant flows better into the seams and stitching instead of one thick application. I leave my tent standing for 2 days and give it 2 applications. Great videos Justin, thanks for taking the time to make these

I got the Pro1last summer, although I got condensation I wasn't looking for this particular issue, but will look next time thanks. One thing i was going to try to combat the condensation was sleep with the outer door open if there is no rain expected. Thanks for the videos, Justin, your reviews compelled me to purchase the Lanshan and I’m happy with my purchase. Just a few notes and comments after I was able to get it out this weekend and practice setting up the tent. Starting off with the Duplex hack, I did this hack and I am generally pleased with the outcome, but it remains uncertain if I will use the bathtub lifters in the field. One thing I noticed is it’s difficult to prevent the stretchy cord from making contact with the side walls and it would seem to me that condensation would flow onto the cord and onto the bath tub floor. I will practice pitching and perhaps this issue can be eliminated. A couple minor issues that I ran across, and one is that you can only open the right side of the screen mesh on both entrances and not both sides, unlike the Duplex, something I did not notice before I purchased the tent. Not a deal breaker, but being able to fully open both sides of the screen door would have been a plus. The second thing I had trouble with is getting the bathtub floor to stand up fully around the two longest sides of the tent. I know this is a matter of practicing pitch and setup. My poles were set to 46” (117cm). I will continue to practice setup. A deeper bathtub would have been to my liking. I feel this tent could be adequate for long distance thru hikes which I hope to do more of in the near future and in retirement. Is this enough tent for such an epic adventure as the Pacific Crest Trail or Appalachian Trail? The verdict is still out on that, and for a hike that epic it may well be worth the $600 for a Duplex. But for thru hikes up to a couple weeks I would say this is a solid bet. I will need more field testing, I’m quite sure this would be suitable for the 215 mile John Muir trail I’m hoping to hike next summer.

J. Ross Good sound feedback there. 👍 Practice pitching in your back garden or local park as much as you can. You will learn how to vary those details to suit your ground, conditions and personal preference. I am still learning myself but having camped in wet, dry, windy, calm, low/high elevation, smooth/lumpy and flat/sloping ground I have a good feel for the tent and what type of pitch is best. Hi Justin, I am subscribed and love your channel. You make the 2pro look easy, I’ve spent the morning pitching and re-pitching the tent...just can’t get the door sides of the tent to drop down...they are higher than the wall sides! I gotta change the channel name...everyone thinks that it’s because of Forest Gump (although I do love the film) but it is because I live in the New Forest, Hampshire. I’ve been watching your mod vids, some fantastic ideas, especially raising the inner bottom mesh with loops and bungee. Will seam seal when weather is warmer and carry out the other mods before tackling the WHW in May. Keep up the great vids in 2021, the quality and style are superb and easy to consume. Cheers, Kevin.

New Forest Gump - Don't change your channel name Kevin! It's one of the best. Actually, from the way you put your words and sentences together I guessed you were British and from the New Forest. I was right, ha ha! 😂 Nice bit of sleuthing there I reckon. Just put a description on your channel page to explain. Wish I had a cool channel name...... Anyway, keep practising with your tent. I've put it up and down about 20 times now and I try something slightly different each time just to see how it goes. Yes, the vestibule doors are shorter than the side walls. One quick adjustment you can try without taking it all down is to lower your poles a few inches when tent is pitched. Just unlock, lower, re-lock. Then go round tightening up the guy lines and see the difference. Thanks for subbing and your kind comments. Let me know how you get on, both with your L2pro and WHW. 👍 Justin.

You've identified the only issue I have with this tent (mine's the 1 Pro) and your mod is, I'd say, the Rolls-Royce solution. What I've found is that the slope angle of that mesh band depends on how the tent is pitched, and it is possible with care (and practice!) to get the correct slope (i.e. downward from the top edge of the bathtub) - usually the problem is that the pole is set a little too high, preventing the fly edges getting down low enough. However, uneven ground can make this impossible to achieve, which is where your mod would really come into its own. I shall have to give it a go!
@JustinWhiting9
@JustinWhiting9 4 года назад
Thanks David! 👍 I’m pleased with how it turned out. Someone else in the comments suggested just glueing the loops rather than stitching which would be easier, less risky (if you’re not good at sewing) and certainly a lot less faff. I’m not sure if they would last, but even if the glue did fail, it wouldn’t be a big deal. You’re right, pitching with shorter poles would change the geometry to help the angle of the mesh. I think the fly sheet would be closer to the ground then though, restricting airflow and leading to more condensation. I will certainly give it a try. Subscribe sir! 😀 ⛺️ 👍

Yes my head or feet end can pull the elastic down as you say, but not at the same time, the tent is too long for that. Not had really heavy rain all night yet though. @JustinWhiting9
@JustinWhiting9 4 года назад
Thanks PC! 👍 I set my poles to 120 cm (47.25”) but you can go a little higher or lower to suit ground, wind, temp, humidity, etc. I found it possible to raise or lower the poles even after setting up the tent. No need to start all over again. To raise, just go round and slacken the guy lines, then go inside, raise you pole carefully, lock off, then tighten the guy lines again. Sequence is pretty simple, like in my vid. Four corners first (not tight), then 1 pole and peg out door, then the other pole and door. It should stay up then. Then go around adjust each line to suit. The trickiest bits are the 2 anchor points pulling out the side walls. Just practice a few times ‘til you’re happy. The fabric also goes saggy and wrinkly with moisture, but taught in warm sunshine. Finally, you can try out different knot positions on each of the guy lines to suit the way you like it. I chose a sunny day with no other time pressures and really enjoyed myself! Good luck. Subscribe too man! Justin. ⛺️🥾🏔🍺

Hi Justin, just received the 2020 2 Pro for Xmas....been looking forward to it for ages! It is the 3F version but I noticed that it has a few differences to yours. The zips look very flimsy & not ykk, and the cordage at the bottom of the bath tub that connects to the pegs is now the same cord as the guy lines...would have preferred the bungee style as the lines are not tight when fixed in place. Also, the tensioning straps for the tent itself are also cord and not the flat straps on previous models. Did you switch the bath tub lines for bungee and are you confident that the tent can take on the WHW? I’m used to the Banshee Pro which looks a lot tougher! Cheers, Kevin

Hi Kevin. Firstly, great channel name! New Forest Gump, love it! 👍 One of my family's favourite films. I would be honoured if you would subscribe so I can show off to my kids! Interesting differences not only between 3F and Flames Creed, but also possible changes from the same factory. Not sure of the reasons for those changes, but hopefully they were for design reasons rather than cost cutting. I have not switched any of the cords or bungees on my L2pro, that's how it came. I have made a few mods though. I have done 6 videos on this tent, check those out if you haven't already. I added the 2 internal bungees to the bathtub, seam sealed via 2 different methods and replaced one of the door hooks after it broke (HIGH WIND TEST vid). Other than that it has been good so far and is definitely ok for the WHW, although camp spot and pitching are important as always. Cheers man, and Happy Christmas! Justin. 😊

@JustinWhiting9
@JustinWhiting9 2 года назад
Only specific adhesives stick to the Silnylon material on the L2pro. I’m not sure what adhesive is on the Zpacks loops but the idea would work if you used the silicone adhesive in my video and made your own loops. 👍 Some people make their own adhesive from bathroom silicone sealant thinned with white spirit but I never tried that myself.
@GrizzleGear
@GrizzleGear 2 года назад
@@JustinWhiting9 Yeah. After commenting, I found a Reddit thread. Most adhesives won't stick to sil nylon. But I discovered that the tenacious tape ripstop repair adheres perfectly and I think I'm going to sew loops onto the adhesive patches, then just adhere them So I don't cause any holes in the tent body. :) I may end up just sewing the loop for the bathtub floor though. But I'll use the stick on for the tent body portion. Thanks for the great video man.

What are your thoughts on double-wall Tents vs. single wall tents. I’m also giving Dan Durston’s X Mid 2 a serious look. It’s a double walled tent with a unique design. It only used 4 stakes and the trekking poles are offset from the doors. It has tie loops to add an additional four stakes which would pin it firmly to the ground with no air gap should the situation arise. It is available exclusively on MassDrop, and is about $100 more than the Lanshan 2P, and their weights are roughly the same, it seems. I am looking to possibly get the lighter small stakes if I did get the Lanshan, and I would also explore the option of not using the head and foot tie outs to save weight. It would seem that a person such as myself, a hair under 6’ might be able to get by fine without those tie outs. In addition, my backpack has a front mesh pocket that’s compressible by bungee which makes a great tent storage so I would not need to bring the storage bag. Do you think they help tremendously in the pitch of the tent?

J. Ross Hi, I don’t know that tent. I just wanted a lightweight tent for hiking with good inside space. I only camp in summer so don’t need double walled or winter tents. The Zpacks Duplex seemed perfect but very expensive. The Lanshan 2 Pro is almost exactly the same design at one sixth of the price so worth a punt. It’s working well for me so far. The red aluminium stakes with L2 Pro work well and are strong. I wouldn’t bother trying save a few grams on those titanium shepherds hook type or carbon fibre. They just bend and break too easily, and cost too much. I would not leave a tie-out at home to save a tiny amount of weight. Any strong wind and you're in trouble. Certainly, the tent will flap more and cost you sleep. Check out my recent hiking and wild camping vids in Scotland in the L2 Pro. Good luck 👍

Justin Whiting the more I research the more I’m really liking this tent. I’m 6’ and 225 I’m just back and forth between the 1P and 2P. I do like to pack light when I can.

And I just ordered the LPro 2. Do a comparison and you’ll see it only weighs 4 ounces more the the LPro 1., 2.2 lbs vs 1.8lbs, (if my math is correct), a very insignificant weight difference.
@JustinWhiting9
@JustinWhiting9 3 года назад
Yes, the weight difference is not a lot. The L2 Pro is big inside and I’m happy with mine. 👍

As a total novice to sowing… how do you suggest going about this? Is there a video or article with pictures showing the method? Also, how did you do it with the tent pitched? Thanks!
@JustinWhiting9
@JustinWhiting9 3 года назад
Hi Jonathan, If you’re a novice don’t bother. I am good with a needle and thread and did it indoors with the tent laid flat. It was tricky actually and you risk piercing or ripping your fly sheet. Not good! An easier method is to glue it on, use silicone based if on a silnylon tent like the L2pro. 👍

Thank you, I just got my 2pro and will try this - I've never done any mods to my gear before so will be good. Have you done any other mods to the tent that you recommend?
@JustinWhiting9
@JustinWhiting9 2 года назад
Hi Rebecca, for a first-timer it's quite tricky and easy to damage the flysheet with the needle. A safer way would be to glue the loops in place with the same silicone based adhesive you used for seam sealing the tent. That should be strong enough for you to try out, and if it does fall off then at least you won't have pierced or ripped the tent. I've done several hacks, tests and reviews of my kit including six L2pro vids. I saved them in the playlist, 'Lightweight Gear Reviews' on my channel page. Thanks for dropping by, Justin. 👍

@@JustinWhiting9 Thanks Justin, I will try the glue option instead. What were the plastic cinch things you used and what kind of cord do you recommend? I've just watched the other L2Pro vids and really enjoyed them. I seam sealed mine 2 days ago and it rained heavy the next morning and all completely dry inside. Thanks for your really helpful videos, really helps me when I'm just starting out.

Thanks Rebecca! Glad you liked the vids. 👍 Do you mean the black plastic spring locks? I keep odds and ends in a spare box. I think they were on the draw string for a small storage bag for something. The black elastic cords were likewise some off-cut from an old piece of kit or clothing or something. The lighter the better. 😎

hi JUSTIN love your work... I have he same tent and bought a 3 seasons inner ..uum. Do u think I could possibly upgrade my tent by removing the bathtub and mesh doors ? or am i simply mad ? Cheers Alan

Thanks Alan 👍 Mine is the L2pro single skin tent, which is different from the previous L2, which could be bought with (I believe) either a 3- or 4-season inner. In both cases, the L2 is a double skin tent. So, I don’t really know what your idea is, or whether you are mad. I like cut of your gib though fella! ATB, Justin 🤠

Hi Justin … I bet you never included becoming an agony uncle to Lanshan tent owners! So my brown Lanshan pro is a single skin superb bit of kit and it worked v well on bike camping in the Hebrides. I was mad enough to buy a 4 season inner to upgrade the tent …( perhaps hardly necessary ) …. My seriously daft question is that it seems I would need to cut out the mesh and bathtub and then somehow clip / attach the new inner … Have you ever know any happy camper to try this ? It takes allsorts …. Thanks for your tips .. incorporated your ideas earlier this year !! all the best & happy Christmas. Alan !

I really don’t know Alan. I think the inner should clip or fasten inside somehow. I don’t see the point of vandalising your original tent though. I mean, why? Anyway, enjoy yourself. Ava guddun, Justin

Great idea, just got my L1 Pro today and think I will eventually make a similar mod. Note the back wall might need to be lifted at several points as it is so long compared to sides, but that may be unique to the 1 person tent. There is something else that bothers me more though, there is sort of an excess flap edge where the netting meets the bathtub edge which I think was meant to form a sort of gutter; however, the way it is sewn at the vertical seams tends to point that edge down and into the tub. Seems like an odd design to have a drip edge into the tent or perhaps it is just a mistake on mine, but this is my first tent so I'll give it a chance before I change it. Wondering if you noticed anything similar?
@JustinWhiting9
@JustinWhiting9 4 года назад
Hi Jott, thank you! 👍 yes I knew the L1 pro only has one door, and the long back side has a third mesh. Not quite sure how the fly sheet anchor points work there, hopefully similar. I have seen the L1 pro suffering more condensation due to only one door, so this mod is worth looking at. Check the other comments, some good ideas in there. I used safety pins to test the loop position and get them vertically in line. Then took the tent down flat to stitch it. You could also glue the loops. I’m afraid I don’t know what you mean by the ‘gutter flap’. Take a look at my ‘Heavy Rain Test’ vid, there are close-ups all around the inside of my L2 pro. Send me a message on that if you spot it. Thanks for commenting, and subscribe too chap! Justin ⛺️ 🤙

@@JustinWhiting9 Good idea Justin, I reviewed the Rain Test video, which did have good detail, and it appears that the tents are different. I think yours has the mesh connect to the top of the bathtub's double stitched edge. My mesh connects to the next lower row of the double stitched edge forming a sort of an overlap or flashing edge. The way it's installed on mine I fear will result routing water into the tent. It's hard to describe but I can give you a link to show you. I would appreciate any help can give me Thanks again, Jott. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TjMlIFn7ASA.html

Hi Jott, watched your video. Well, it seems slightly different from the L2 pro as you say. I guess you have watched lots of other L1 pro vids to compare. At least that overhang would be easier to stitch to, compared to the L2 pro. I think condensation drops might still come across the mesh in a similar way in my L2 pro in the corners. See the bit near the end of my video where I say, “water should mostly go outside”. Like you, that is what I was thinking at the time. There is a L1 pro condensation test video by a Scottish guy who boiled water inside the tent and took good footage. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6hYyKXL1PjM.html. Test out the mod with safety pins then you will know. 👍 Justin

@@JustinWhiting9 Justin, those are all good suggestions and I'll note that it was only after considering your mod in the first place that I realised the my issue. It seems odd to me that your Pro 2 does not have the flap at all, it's possibly a mid cycle improvement which generally bodes well for 3F. I think I see in Richard Chang's review ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-w1vkV_8M7AA.html @ 3:06 the flap is installed like mine. However, best I can tell in Andrew Parks Condensation test video @ 5:08 it appears to be installed as I thought it ought to be. I would like to contact 3F before I start making mods but I can't find a support page other than a Facebook site, which is kind of disturbing, and which I am not a member of. I bought my tent though a Amazon third party seller so I'm rethinking the wisdom of that. Not that I can't just fix it myself but I'm think there should be a simple way to work with 3F to help them improve their product with suggetions as yours and issues such as mine. Thanks again for the help, Jott

I bought my L2 pro in January and it arrived here in the UK at the end of Feb. It’s also a Flame’s Creed brand, but not sure if the 3F or Mier branded tents are identical or just similar. Maybe your tent is a newer version, and if it’s a small design improvement then good. Like you say, getting in touch with them is very hard. I bought mine from Aliexpress and a seller called JY Outdoor Equipment. I had to contact them about something else and it was a pain and took weeks. Anyway, that’s the deal. Good luck man! 👍

Justin, out of curiosity did you hand or machine sew this ? And what thread did you use? Ta.
@JustinWhiting9
@JustinWhiting9 3 года назад
Hi Colin, I hand stitched them with ordinary black cotton thread. I seam sealed the stitching on the flysheet afterwards but no need down on the bathtub. Sewing the loops to the inside of the flysheet was the hardest bit. I took the tent indoors where I laid it out flat. It was quite tricky and a bit of a faff, but I'm good at sewing and patient. Someone else in the comments suggested just glueing the loops instead. It would be easier and less risky. I’m not sure if they would last, but even if the glue did fail, it wouldn’t be a big deal. PS - Lots of good comments from other people here too 👍 Justin
