February of 2022 was a busy month... too damn busy. Fly fishing for wild trout had to be put on hold for weeks, so when I finally got the opportunity to hit a small stream in New Haven County, Connecticut to target both wild brook trout and brown trout in the waning days of the month, I had my fingers crossed that it would be fruitful. Secret Stream "N" did NOT disappoint.

No doubt in my mind that the brown snacks on plenty of YoY brookies. In a way, it’s sort of unfortunate that browns have infiltrated this wild brookie stream, but I have to say, the brookies seem to be holding their own with a pretty robust population. Considering that this is a noisy, roadside stream in a fairly developed area of New Haven County, it’s really a gem.

I live close by to this brook. It just so happens I fished it on a whim 2 days before you posted this video. I remember when the state used to stock it but they stopped doing so about 30 years ago (guessing). I just wanted to see if it held any wild brookies. I was happy to see that it does. I landed 7 of them on a dry/dropper. 6 on the elk hair caddis, 1 on the nymph. Lots of fun on my little 3wt fiberglass rod. I was very surprised when you landed that 14" brown. My logical assumption is that he migrated up the brook from the main river below. Anyway, I always enjoy your videos and always look forward to the next one. We fish many of the same waters, maybe I'll bump into you some day. Keep up the good work!

Nice, glad you got into some wilds out there! It’s one of those streams hidden in plain sight, so to speak, that really produces. It’s certainly possible that the brown came upstream in autumn and decided to hang out into spring. However, I’ve caught a number of wild browns in there of smaller size, abt 8” or less, so it’s entirely possible he was a resident. Though if that’s the case, he likely represents the ceiling in terms of size that the stream could support.

Great video! Any chance of listing the recipe for that “Orleans Bugger”?

Sure, this is basically a VERY rough adaptation of an Orleans Barber pattern to a woolly bugger frame. So… 7-10 lead wraps on the hook shank depending on how heavy you want it, grizzly marabou tail, red chenille body, several turns of grizzly hackle just behind the bead (don’t palmer it down the body as you would typically do with a woolly bugger, only wrap it at the collar). I always tie them with bead heads, though you could use bullet heads, too. I tie them in #6-#10.

Thank you for providing such a nice video of flyfishing in Febuary! Those were gorgeous wild jewels! And that brown was a slammer for such a smallish sized stream . I’m still waiting patiently for our blown out local trout streams to recede enough so I can go wet a fly line. But, this video will help us in the meantime while we bide our time waiting. As always, thanks for such a nice video and tightlines!
