Another WONDERFUL reaction! Thank you SO much! I am fairly certain that little riff Rachelle Ann Go did was only for this special concert for the 25th anniversary and she was allowed (encouraged) to not just sing the song as she sang it in the revival. I think that's part of the delight you see on Lea's face (and hear from the audience) - her having fun with it. Lea was 18 when she originally played Kim in 1989, so she is 43 years old in this video. The clips you were showing of an older Gigi - I'm pretty sure those are from the 2000 production of MISS SAIGON in Manila and that was the original West End Gigi (Isay Alvarez) reprising her role along with Lea Salonga. The man playing Thuy in the 2000 production was also in the original West End ensemble and I think later replaced as Thuy (Robert Sena). He is married to Isay Alvarez. Unsure if they met doing the original MISS SAIGON or were already together when they were cast. (Many of the original West End cast came from the Philippines.) In any case, I don't think Gigi needs to be significantly older than Kim, though it certainly works. The important thing is that she represents the opposite to Kim's innocence - using sex to get what she wants/needs. Lea's name is pronounced LAY-uh (like Princess Leia in Star Wars).

Rewatching this reaction video. It's so wonderful! I don't think I mentioned previously - I believe I read somewhere that Lea wasn't trying to perform this song the way she did originally when she was 18. She wasn't singing it as the virginal 17-year-old Kim, trying to get through her first night working at the bar. The song does play differently within the show which includes all the bar girls singing a little bit. I love the parts where they sing together. They sound so gorgeous. I've noticed that when I recommend Lea songs for people to react to, I choose a lot of duets. I hope you catch more of them!

It helped me realize how this song is very relatable in some point of our lives.. it may not be the exact situation, but it is relatable on how we grasped onto hope when everything is on a disarray and utter chaos..

I actually like the sort of role reversal in this performance. In the original, Gigi was more experienced and more aggressive, whereas Kim is naive and optimistic. In this performance, Rachel makes Gigi look like an idealistic and desperate woman, while Lea's resentful eyes and vengeful expressions make Kim look like a woman who has experienced a lot of suffering and who do not believe that men will save her. When Lea sang that she closes her eyes when she makes love, it appears to me that the character only hopes to survive her every night and tries to keep and protect some part herself that is still her. She does not dream of a man who will save her, because only she can keep herself alive and sane. When they hugged in the end, I teared up seeing two women with different approaches to their situation console each other with a smile. It's like saying that what is certain at that moment is they have each other's back.
