This is a new series where I'm interviewing some of the best jazz musicians in the world about one of my favorite topics, learning jazz vocabulary! This can be one of the toughest things to find direction and clarity on in the practice room. Through picking the brains of these fantastic musicians, we can get inspiration and direction to become the best musicians possible!
We kick off the series with one of the best players and educators I know, Steve Kortyka! Enjoy and let me know what you think of this new series :)

Steve is amazing; great player, teacher, presenter. Steve is correct : trust the process. It only takes a few years…um, decades.

This was great. We all know the importance of vocabulary, but too often don’t hear it discussed deeply enough or from the perspective of how great players practice it and get it into their playing. I also love Steve’s comments on the importance of getting the vocabulary into tunes and giving them context.

Excellent! So much valuable information here. I like the idea of a more organic approach, allowing the tunes to inspire new vocab ideas. Thank you gentlemen 👍🏻

Great tutorial and so happy that Steve did not suggest learning a bunch of licks or patterns (which doesn't come easily to me) but rather concentrate on your improve over a particular tune or even a couple of chords.

You guys should go into singing 😂It is so related to playing the saxophone, all about the sound resonating in your body, just the source of of the sound is different - vocal folds-reed, so much to discover here😊. As a saxophone player I regularly take singing lessons and my sax sound improved so much, because my sensitivity feeling the muscles in my throat and in my body for breathing increases. Also having the exact melodies of tunes in my head, yes: if I can‘t sing the melody I have not yet a full representation of it in my brain and can neither sing or play it correctly…

Hey @Barbara2800! I do think that singing is important - I think over time I have learned out to hear things without having to sing them with my voice and that has provided the same benefits that learning to sing something has. I may be considering some voice lessons in the future 👀😎
