Just bought the legion. Looks less gamer-ey. So I can bring it to work without getting weird looks from people lol . Great laptop. Having most of the ports in the back was the best part for me
amazing comparison review man, the hp omen 15 2018 with your 2019 specs ( i7 9750H ran RTX 2060) that i have now work perfectly on comfort mode during many hours of gamings ( thanks to the Bios uptade to F.14) and only needs CPU undervolt on performance mode to work decently, unfortunately the default mode is not suitable for gaming
Really good review. I saw a couple of others where they undervolted the Lenovo vs (something with identical cpu/gpu) to get the performance gap closed up, but never gave the other machine a shot with similar tweaks. Out of the box, seems like the Lenovo runs hot and throttles excessively. 99.9% of folks will never undervolt their cpu. You tweaked both and the Omen has almost a 25% performance improvement in Watchdogs 2 (@10:32 in video). Clearly, one of these machines is for performance and gaming and one is more for people who want to look like they might be carrying a corporate laptop. I have a corporate laptop, when I break out my gaming laptop I don't mind it looking like what it is.
I just bought the hp omen 15 did any1 of u receive a fan problem the fan sound was quite high for my hp omen although im just scorlling the internet or my laptop is left idling
I chose Legion before this video, and actually sticked with it throughout the video as well. In my country Omen doesn't come with this configuration for this price, at least I didn't find it, and Legion with this configuration is cheaper. For me Omen didn't seem that much better, even tho I really like the metal cover.
@@TechFinds Well compared to what I had before this is a major step up. I am really super-satisfied with it, I didn't even think of a possibility to run games on high details, so this is absolutely sufficient already :) But I think I was really lucky with the price for this particular piece. I'd only add, the cooling system is truly loud.
@@PegasStar You can't avoid loud fan noise - every gaming laptop needs good cooling and actually Legion is one of the quietest laptops if it comes to noise ;)
My hp omen is coming on Monday first gaming laptop and I got a good deal on it, decided to go with the 17.3 inch 1660ti i7 version! Very excited to try all games on it!
No offense, but the Omen 15 2020 version is coming, it has a better design and all that, I think you could've wait for it. But that's still a great laptop that I want it so much!
I bought the Lenovo Legion Y740 17'', it's one of the best purchases I've ever done. I owned a high end gaming pc from 2014 and having this laptop how compact and fast it is, I use it also as a desktop. It's also great for music production/ gaming, editing, multimedia and it's portable. I will now always stick with a Lenovo. I also love that the HDMI is all on the back, they really thought this laptop through.
@@BradT44 Hi no I don't have overheating issues at all the fans are located on the back and sides of the laptop, fan noise can be bit noisy but you'll get used to it only when gaming, further it's pretty quite.
@@_YoshikageKira every gaming laptop has fan noise under load? When gaming use headphones, and u wont even hear it. Otherwise the y540 is quiet, and you cant hear anything

Unfortunately i am not familiar with Linux and coding ;) There is almost no difference between 8th and 9th gen i7. Legion has better GPU and in theory it should you better performance in games, but thermal throttling may be the problem here. In Omen at least it's possible to deal with high temperature.
I actually liked the 2019 Omen. In my opinion it's wrong to say that certain brand makes every laptop bad. Each brand has better and worse models, but you'll not find that out unless you test every device. ;)
@@TechFinds I agree; I have not used the HP, only products of the brand and I have not liked them. From Lenovo I just bought the Y740, they had to change the motherboard because the GPU was damaged. This type of damage on a $ 3,000 gaming computer is quite an epic fail, also Lenovo's attention has been somewhat cynical.
The noise fan are same ? Because i have a HP OMEN 15 and when i play assassin creed it's just horrible so i would like buy a Legion y540 because i heard it s more quieter in gaming than HP OMEN 15
Pretty much all of these gaming laptops make a lot of fan noise. I think you just have to accept that it sounds like a jet engine sometimes. My legion Y540 get's loud as well, I had a Zephyrus S and a Scar III before I had my Y540 and they also made a lot of fan noise.

That would be a perfect choice. The temperature is not a problem at such light tasks. Only heavy gaming may be problematic, but the performance is still good.
Bought y540 15IRH with 15.6" 9300h rtx2060 512 mb ssd with 800 euros on BF november '19, and it rocks. It has better cooling for extended sessions and the hinges are better positiomed. I admit i like omen because if the metal built, but other factors are more important.

I get you picked the Omen for gamers, but what about typists, programmers, or others they enjoy their mechanical keyboard at home? Is the lenovo keyboard better for typing or are they similar due to the 1.5mm travel.
I think that the keyboard in Lenovo is better for typing, working and everyday use but Omen's keyboard is practically the same good. No compare to mechanical keyboard in both cases tho

If I had to choose i would go for the MSI GE65 Raider, because it was the best performing laptop for the specs. It also had the best temperatures and it doesn't even need tweaking to get the best performance.
Tech Finds I prefer the neater look of rear ports. I hate things sticking out to the sides. I bought an adapter for my Alienware new m15 just to avoid that.

I don't know French prices but 1199 Euro is pretty cheap for a European country. Helios 300 might be better choice than Omen or Legion but idk if you can find it so cheap in Europe which means that 1199 is better heal in this case

Hi, thanks! The 15" and 17" models of Omen have practically the same battery, so considering that 17" one has bigger screen it may have shorter battery life, but didn't test it.
Omen have trash cooling.. After 5 months he died.. Throttled af.. An last year Lenovo Fried in 2 months.. Don't buy Gaming Laptops, game on pc or console
@@TechFinds guy who I sold to has changed paste, and cleaned everything.. Saying goes to 96-97.. But then was new, I had max 90c on full loads. It lasted like 3 months
@@jzgamingstuff549 It was a faulty unit i guess. My friend has Omen for 2 years now and it's working perfectly fine. 80-85 degrees with undervolting on performance mode.

In theory you can. You can download it for free from Microsoft Store if you have compatible model of HP Omen laptop (this one is). However there are lot of issues with installing it and sometimes it may not even be possible. Once i uninstalled this app by accident and now i can't get it downloaded and installed on my friend's Omen even tho it's eligible for this app.
That usb-c port on the hp omen is not a thunderbolt 3. That symbol that is next to the usb-c port is the Hp sleep and charge symbol. It looks like the lighting bolt that is used for the thunderbolt port . I have tried the port and it does not support thunderbolt 3. So don’t make the mistake I did
Mine had TB3 and HP claims that it's TB3. Actually you're the first one who report that. Now it makes me wonder if only certain configurations of 2019 have TB3 feature.

I need an advice. I have the choice between the Lenovo Legion y540 (i5 9300HF, 16GB RAM, GTX 1660TI and 512GB SSD) which costs 1099€ and the Acer Nitro 5 (i5 9300H, 8GB RAM, RTX 2060 and 512GB SSD) which costs 1012€. The Acer has the better GPU, however I have the fear that the processor throttles the RTX. Moreover, I don't like that aggressive gamer look so much due to I also want to use it for work. @@soldier0fsalvation It should survive long years, but of course you have to take care of it sometimes. I mean cleaning fans of dust, changing thermal paste and undervolting so the laptop can keep lower temperatures.

I'll compare 2018 and 2019 Omen as next video, but idk exactly when. However i can't test them on the same drivers again, because I don't have these laptops now. I'll be basing on the data and shots that I made before.
@@TechFinds Okay. I saw both of your fps tests with the 2060 models but they were 6-8 months apart. The newer one fared much better. I'm not sure if drivers were the issue or if the new one was just way better. How much better is the 2060 now than it was 8 months ago?
@@squeakymonkey there are a lot of things that may affect the performance. Drivers, game patch, room temperature etc. Always take the results with a grain of salt, because it may change with time. In case of 2018 Omen the performance might have been a bit lower because of high temperatures. This problem has been changed with the 2019 model. It still runns hot, but it seems to not affect the performance
I got the Lenovo Y740 15" with RTX 2060 last month. I didn't know much about Omen HP laptops back then but I couldn't pass up the offer of just $1350 on the Y740 during the winter discounts. Out of the box, the Y740 did have very high temperatures, spiking even up to 100 C. I could undervolt CPU but only up til -0.120 V which slightly lowered the temps down to 80-90. I might buy a cooling pad but people say it is ineffective for Y740 and temperatures could go way better with reapplying thermal paste. Very quiet fans when light use, but as expected it gets noisy when performance mode enabled. Battery life is nothing when gaming, even on light use you couldn't get more than 2 hours with out of the box settings. Only with undervolted CPU, 50% brightness, no rgb, battery saver mode enabled: you can get around 5 hours light use which isn't entirely bad. I can't seem to find G-sync settings in NVIDIA and am trying to reinstall drivers, but games look and run smooth anyways.

@@gheorghevoinovan5819 so you have older model which runns only on automatic fans. There's no other way to set the speed. In fact HP could implement that feature to the app in older models but they still didn't. Maybe update BIOS or app and see if they added it.

ya, most of these laptops run hot out of the box, my dell g7 7790 gaming laptop with a i7 9750h and rtx 2060 got up to 100c at times out of the box. so i tweaked it using throttlestop by undervolting, lowering cpu wattage, and lowering cpu clock speeds.
You need to consider buying warranty for either one as well. In usa legion has option of just extra 25 bucks for a year aside from standard warranty that covers accidental drop spill warranty. Hp warranty is expensive and standard doesn't cover accidents. I returned two hp omen 15 from microcenter. One had bad and loud coil whine. The second omen had logo freeze, factory rest freez, black light bleed, power button didn't lit up and hard drive made loud crackling sound. Will never buy omen again from microcenter but microcenter's customer surviceis pretty good so i will buy from them but not hp laptops. Even the cashier told me that he strongly beleive that hp sends them defective products at reduced price. I hope legion is better than omen but i read some bad reviews. i ordered it anyways... finger crossed😐😐😐😐
You had a really bad lunck or the cashier was right. ;) My Omen was great without any defects. You could have considered 2019 Acer Predator Helios 300 as well.

Nice reviews! i'm now choosing between legion y540 and hp pavilion gaming 15 with the same price except the y540 has i5 while the hp pavilion has i7 with the same gpu. which one would you recommend?
Note that Pavilion has GTX 1660Ti Max-Q while Y540 comes with full size GTX 1660Ti. I am not able to predict which one would give you better performance in this case since Legion that you found has i5. Also the i7 in Pavilion has power limit set to 30W instead of 45W. I think that I would go for Legion.
