LET'S MAKE BROWN SUGAR SYRUP - SO SIMPLE

WARNING: MIXTURE IS VERY HOT! KEEP THE SYRUP REFRIGERATED WHEN DONE Brown sugar syrup is something I’ve made for years. I like to keep some handy for lots of things, such as pancakes, a base for BBQ sauce, a baste for ham and just an all around good sweetener. This is so economical to make you’re going to love it.

I think the wooden spoon works better as if we used a steel one, it would conduct the heat and add to the rising temperature, causing higher and faster chances of it boiling over loved the recipe! making it for boba pearls!

If you leave a wooden spoon in anything you are simmering it will absorb the flavours of what you are cooking. The next thing you cook and use the spoon for will get the flavour in it. For example if you leave the spoon in a curry then make this syrup it will taste of curry.
@simplefoodsimplelife9632
@simplefoodsimplelife9632 4 года назад
W11 Granny I’ve had my wooden spoons for many years and use them on a daily basis. Honestly, that has never been my experience. I put my wooden spoons through the dishwasher and they are fine. Then again I have never made curry and I do understand those are extremely strong flavors. Thank you for taking the time to comment I appreciate it.

@simplefoodsimplelife9632
@simplefoodsimplelife9632 3 года назад
That’s a good question. I like to control the consistency of the syrup. Sometimes thicker and sometimes thinner. Also, the longer cooking time adds to the flavor of the syrup. If you want to add less water, feel free Junus. It’s your syrup make it as you wish.

The amount of water is too much. Half cup of water to one cup of brown sugar works best. 5 minutes of cooking is all that is needed. Stirring it creates crystallization so I did not stir.

Is it bad for your health? This technically looks like burnt sugar.
@simplefoodsimplelife9632
@simplefoodsimplelife9632 3 года назад
Good question. It is not burnt sugar. Burnt sugar is not edible and smells very bad. As for being bad for your health? That is for you to decide. Manufactured syrup is made of mostly Corn Syrup, which is not something I wanted my kids to have on their pancakes so I felt the brown sugar syrup is best because it consists of only brown sugar and water. That being said, too much sugar from any source is bad for your health. Thanks for your comment. I appreciate it.

Just wondering if that hardens in container?
@simplefoodsimplelife9632
@simplefoodsimplelife9632 5 лет назад
javadergs that’s a good question. Thanks. If you don’t over cook the mixture, it should be fine. Occasionally it will crystallize but you can remedy that by reheating. Make sure you keep it refrigerated. It will thicken when cold. 👍
@javadergs
@javadergs 5 лет назад
Thanks..I wanted to maintain the syrup consistency. Should I not put in the the refrigerator? Or I will need to reheat it everytime. I was thinking of something like the pancake syrup.😀. Appreciate your response.
@simplefoodsimplelife9632
@simplefoodsimplelife9632 5 лет назад
javadergs the syrup needs to be refrigerated. Pancake syrup you purchase in the store contains corn syrup so it doesn’t require refrigeration. This syrup is sugar syrup so it needs refrigeration otherwise it will spoil. It lasts a very, very long time in the fridge. You can take the chill off in the microwave or set it in a pan of hot water if you prefer. Thanks for asking.

I have never canned the syrup so I could not tell you. I suppose it would last as long as any home canned goods however I'm not sure if it would crystallize after canning. I hope this helps. Thanks for stopping by.

i make mine using 2 lbs of brown sugar and 2/12 cups of water and i add some maple extract too "the grand kids love it" and it makes more than a bottle of store bought . plus you know whats in it and not additives,plus i keep mine on the shelf and it does not go bad because it does not sit for more than one month before its gone and i make more,

I wonder if use less water would make the process shorter? Or it just has to be boiled long enough and all that water is there so the sugar doesn’t burn?
@simplefoodsimplelife9632
@simplefoodsimplelife9632 2 года назад
That’s a good question. I have always made it this way with good success. If you wish to make it with less water feel free to do so. Just watch it carefully. I think it’s good to be experimental with cooking and see what works for you. Thanks so much for your input.

May great grandfather would made this. i wonder if the flavor is identical. I haven't had it in almost 25 years. I will be trying this in the morning. he also put butter in if i can remember right. there was definitely something else he added besides sugar, water, and vanilla. i think it was butter.

You have a beautiful memory. Thank you. Vanilla is beautiful in the syrup and a pat of butter at the end is so rich. Be blessed Toasty...be blessed.

Mine got done in 5 minutes, but it later turned into a crumbly solid, probably put it on high heat but I'll try it again!
@simplefoodsimplelife9632
@simplefoodsimplelife9632 2 года назад
Try adding some water to it. Put It back on A low heat. It should melt and you can re-cook it. That has happened to me before but it can be salvaged as long as it’s not burnt.
