The LG CX OLED TV follows a legacy of the best OLED TVs we've seen for years. On paper, and in real life, it looks a lot like its predecessor, the LG C9 OLED, but it's got a few tricks up its sleeve. With 4K 120Hz capabilities, variable refresh rate (VRR) through both FreeSync and G-Sync, and incredibly low input lag, the LG CX is poised to be the best TV you can buy in 2020. But is it? You said that for gaming, in dark areas, that you will really struggle to see anything. Does it means that it could be almost impossible to play with ease say on Resident Evil 2's remake for example? If that's true, it kinda hinges my opinion towards buying it or not, although the fact that it has 4 HDMI ports supporting 2.1 alone it screams winner for me. I'm thinking about buying it because of the next gen consoles coming up and one game in particular that will support Ray Tracing if the console can support it and PS5 will be able to reach that level of quality. When do you think I can get it with a good price that's not so high?

@@RazKob33 This TV is regarded as one the best gaming TVs of 2020. It might lose a slight amount of detail in dark areas (so do many other TVs btw) but it's not really something to worry about. A QLED might have less black crushing, but has a lot of other trade-offs too

Hi, I just order the LG CX in a 55 inch for my living room. My first choice was the LG CX in the 48 inch, but when I compared prices between the 48 & 55 inch it was only about $100 difference. It just made more sense to go with the 55 inch TV. I will be getting it around the first week of October. I can't wait.

@@thebeardedsamurai6905 Thanks for your comment. I'll be getting the LG CX in the 77 inch in a about month from now. The reason why I'm considering LG CX is because, I have a Denon AVR-8500h A/V receiver, and in its HDMI section, the receiver has great up-conversion that would be a perfect match for the CX OLED. Also, in my living room, I'll putting in a LG CX in a 55 inch as well. I just wanted to say, you have a 65 inch in the CX. Most places will allow you to upgrade to the 77 inch within a month's time. Something to think about. Thanks.

We purchased a 65" CX when they dropped in price back in November of 2020, based off of the glowing reviews you and so many others gave. It was our first tv upgrade in quite a few years and also our first dip into 4k. I'd actually wanted to upgrade to a big screen OLED for some time but could never justify paying as much as they were charging for them until the sale price we paid for ours. Over all, we're still very happy with the purchase! We've since added a sonos Beam gen 2 sound bar, a 4k blu ray player, a roku ultra, and a set of led back lights to it to bump up the over all experience if this tv. It's great for sports, movies, and just about anything else we watch on it. I can't tell you the number of neighbors and relatives who've just been blown away by it. We'll be thrilled to have it be our main entertainment system for as long as it lasts.

65" CX owner here. Just a heads up, black crush can actually be mitigated through proper calibration. I would highly recommend anyone buying the CX, or the B series before it (I also owned a B9), to get it professionally calibrated to really take advantage of the fantastic PQ this TV is capable of. For me, this is the difference between buying one of the current LCD/QLED sets, and buying an OLED; with some time and energy you really get one of the most beautifully accurate pictures on the market. I still love my X900E, TCL 625, and my other Vizio and Samsung displays, but the calibrated CX simply takes the top spot when it comes to viewing experience. I've also tested 120hz 4k gaming with the 3DClub displayport to HDMI adapter (running from a 2080 Ti) and it's astounding how unbelievably solid and fast the picture is, without any perceptible input lag.

@@chandparam I usually find good calibrators on Craigslist; if you don't have that available in your area, you can check local advertisements/ad sources. You want to find someone that has the right equipment, is certified in specific standards (like isf), preferably one that's worked with your display before, and is willing to spend the time to calibrate whatever modes/inputs you'll be using daily. I've paid anywhere from $150-$500 for a good calibrator (well worth the additional investment, especially with a TV at this price point), and they will spend several hours ensuring the picture is as accurate as possible. Please keep in mind these are "settings" like you'll find in AVS, Reddit, and RU-vid threads, this is real calibration, adjustment of color management, white balance (2, 10, and 22 point values) and using test patterns that ensure calibration yields accurate results on YOUR display, taking even the smallest of panel variances into account.

I haven't noticed any dark areas to the point where I can't see around on my CX, I'm using the HGIG mode and used the calibration on the One X and I haven't had any problems, picture looks phenomenal.

Caleb helps me out again! Used this channel for my Sony X930e and now my CX. Coming from the bright LED is a shocker and took some time. Oled image is dimmer but richer. TV does nearly everything well except get bright. Great review

I’ve been loving my CX 55. Coming from an 2016 Sony Android TV, the interface is snappy as! However, I don’t think the App Store is as refined, there is no way to reboot without pulling the plug and I miss Chromecast built-in. Also a software bug LG is yet to fix is preventing Google Home from controlling the TV too (affects WebOS 4.0+). So that is frustrating too, LG blames Google and vice-versa. Outside of that I’m enjoying the TV, it always looks spectacular and hopefully some of these things can be fixed with updates.

Are you talking about how the TV in the Google Home app doesn't even let you do anything? I don't use voice control or have a Google Home device or anything, but I was hoping to at least register the TV with my Google account to integrate other things. Just want to make sure its broken for you in the same way it is for me :P

You have one of the best TV reviews on RU-vid. You stick to what the consumers are looking for instead of throwing a lot of technical terms and numbers at you. The comment on the black crush was really useful. The only thing you do not talk about is reflection. The only reason I am not buying an OLED TV is the fact that they are really bad with reflections. At the store, all I can see are the lights hanging in the ceiling behind where I am standing. It would be great if you would talk about this in future review. I think it is a make it or break it factor for a lot of people.

why would anyone using a decent sound system use the DTS decoder in the tv...current gen consoles use free sync so until then, it’s beneficial just like the 120hz BFI

@@EndoV2 You don't need Freesync..consoles use HDMI VRR like Xbox One X currently does..the BFI is bugged and causes annoying flickering just like it does on C9..Filmaker mode is as bad as HGIG on games,hardly any support and dims brightness levels too much.

Mr Walker 10 bit panel , 40 GBPS is fine. HDR is absolutely stunning. I plug in 4K blu ray player to sound bar to decode *** DTS:X or Atmos (obv). I’ve been a life-long Sony fan boy (own 930E & 900F).. this is my first Oled and movies/Xbox one X, I am completely blown away. I was shocked how bright this tv gets. Xbox uses VRR, not sure where u got info they CX doesn’t use it.

Enrique Pascual the size is perfect for me, I live in the U.K. and my living room is the average size in U.K. homes. So for me the perfect size tv is 48” as it sits perfectly on my entertainment stand without looking too big, I could’ve got a 55” but I think where the tv is positioned it would just take over and for me wall mounting for a bigger size isn’t an option as it would be too high. I think if you put it in a bedroom it’s great, if your living room is small to medium sized it’s great and especially if your room isn’t a box and you have something like a chimney breast protruding it’s great as it fits better. I think if you have a flat wall and you sit over 10-12 feet away get a 55”or 65” if not go for the 48” the picture is excellent I came from having the Samsung js9000 curved 4K hdr tv which was the first hdr tv Samsung produced with the 9500 and it was 48” and this blows it away in every aspect. It all depends on distance for me it’s just perfect for some ppl and their spaces it maybe too small.

Mayukh Bejoy I own the CX. I would expect for gaming not much difference. Maybe motion is slightly better in movies and TV. However it does matter to have science behind it so I can completely understand what you mean.

With CRU you can add freesync. But.. that works for pc only. For consoles you can use VRR (xbox haves it.. ps4 doesn't.. ps5 might/should have it.. ).

Great Review Caleb! :) The CX is great but I got the C9 in june for 1200 €. It was the best offer that I found and just a few days after my purchase the TV was sold out at almost all retailers in my region or it was tremendously more expensive. It was my first 4K TV and after 2 months I can say it's my first TV that I'm litterally in love with. Although it (to my knowledge) doesn't Support 4K @120fps in HDR(!) for the most part this TV should give me quiet some enjoyment combined with my upcoming PS5. :) Have a good one and stay save! :)

I bought the c9 2 months ago .. hands down money is worth it .. BUT 4 days ago looked like a 4 inch line going from top to bottom on the left side of the screen became alil glitchy and had a lighter color then the rest of the screen ... I returned it to costco and bought the cx or c10 ... ima give it a trial ... if it fucks up like that again ima switch to w.e brand matches the quality

I just snagged a 55” refurbished CX for 999 dollars at Micro Center. Got the 3 year warranty that covers everything including screen replacement. Still spent less than getting a new one somewhere like Best Buy. I’m so excited. I’ve been eyeballing the CX for a while now.

Most people that own a LG C9/CX are good for years for next gen gaming. I think mini led/QD-OLED is being talked about but i wouldn't be so quick to jump on that as it takes time for tech to mature if you remember when QLED first came out in 2013 it wasn't that hot and the price is going to be way out there

Over a year ago I got the LG55 based on your review and I have to say even today I am blown away. I put that TV on and I go "Wow that picture is amazing" Ok ok it was a big step up from my previous LCD but its an amazing TV. My TV room is not that big but at the time I thought the TV was a perfect size but now I believe I should have gone for the 65. Why? Mostly because I put the TV on the wall with the LG bracket and its not as flush as I would like but its flush enough that I hardly notice the TV in the room. It's really a pleasing object in the room compared to most other TV's I looked at. Sony is also great but bang per buck here in the UK the LG knocks the Sony out the park (on price) Regarding the WebOS, being a developer myself I wouldn't be surprised if we got an update soon, its looking a bit dated and needs a refresh and I still think there is future for it. Thanks again I will try to resist until the post-Christmas sales!

Watching this on my 65" LG CX! Agree with everything you said. I'm coming from a curved LG C6P oled and the colors are drastically improved on an already great set in the C6P. Like the new motion settings as well. I do still keep thinking about the Samsung Q90T however and that set's amazing brightness for daytime viewing. Come evening time though, and this tv is absolutely insane for movies!

I have a C6 and am considering going to the CX. My main complaint with the C6 is motion handling and macro blocking with compressed content e.g. Netflix ESPECIALLY near-black. Are these issues improved significantly on the CX?

@@tazzydnc so the CX has a motion setting called cinema clear- my preferred setting, which drastically cuts down on the soap opera effect compared to the C6P in clear mode. With all motion settings off, both sets performed the same to my eyes. I havn't tried messing around with the BFI settings yet with motion set to user. The macro blocking I would say is improved as well. Still not perfect, but pretty good. The biggest difference to me is the improved colors. Very noticeable when both are side by side.

What's your thoughts on the darkness in certain dark scenes in movies or games? I'm afraid of buying this TV and have shadows overpower a dark lite scene in a movie or a game. I'm asking question to everybody to see the consensus. But this issue is holding me back from buying this TV. And what ot the TV screen reflective screen glare. Do you have trouble watching TV during the day? I ask because I will have a window nearby. Thanks

@@Mikelara973 there will be some level of black crush. However, for me at least the perfect deep blacks far out weight the minor black crush in some scenes. Oled's have that 3d look sure to the perfect blacks. Daytime viewing is not bad at all. Screen can be reflective, but during bright scenes it totally blocks out the reflections

@@Fujiwara.Takumi1 That's because it is not suitable for 1440p/144hz. I use it for 1080p/120hz gaming on the TV. You're not going to be playing demanding games at 1440p/144fps maxed out with it.

Make sure you have gamma setting to 2.2. That can help with shadow detail. Also, for SDR I push brightness up to 55 via Cinema mode.

Although the remote is cool, I really wish they had an option to buy a more premium remote. I don’t know if you remember the 7 series models like the E7, G7, and W7, but they all had a nice premium looking remote. It was awesome and I was disappointed they discontinued them after.

A comprehensive review of LG's CX. Its everything it was excepted to be with the exception of the interface and crushing black level. Sound quality is an unexpected surprise. The most significant drawback is the price $2500 for 65" is eye-watering high given the competition. While the CXZ does exceed comparable sets in most areas, IMHO not enough to justify the price.

Spot on - had my CX for a few weeks now and he is on the money - guess I will try the bright room mode since I kind of spoilt now from a few years of bright LED but I just bumped certain games brightness setting to help with the crushed blacks.

It uses the same exact LG OLED panel so you're guaranteed the infinite contrast, wide colors, instant pixel refresh with no blurring, all the other things naturally inherent in a LG OLED panel thats not done by its processing. Processing will be different between the two for sure. Probably same peak brightness and all.

I love the Magic Remote. Fits in the hand perfectly, not too many buttons. Honestly, they could get rid of the number buttons. The only buttons I use are the home, back, power, pause/play, and the directional joypad and scroll wheel.

I have a C6P and I absolutely love the magic wand remote. To the point that using other remotes that do not have the motion pointer just feels dumbed down to me. The pointer just makes navigating so much faster IMO.

Absolutely! Why on earth would you get tired of something so fantastic? I find myself using a standard type of remote, and navigation is excruciating. I love my Magic Remote. LG should never abandon it. This guy's reviews are usually pretty good, but, one this point, he's just silly.

I have the C9 and I can't stand the magic wand. The cursor never lines up with the remote so to use it I have to twist my arm at weird angles to get the cursor where I need it and it's just aggravating. Fortunately it's easy to get rid of with things like up/down arrow clicks. Caleb's dislike of WebOS per se I don't get though.

I've never heard of anyone refer to Roku's interface as good before, especially by a tech reviewer. Roku looks like it was designed for Windows 95. It's the most popular because it's cheap and accessible, not because people are like wow this interface is so great.
