We read the comments and decided to do it ourselves. First we removed the straight vent pipe from the back. Taking measurements we, with a hack saw, cut the original vent pipe to 10 3/4". We fit on the elbow and slid it through the side hole opening and fit it back over the blower housing. Since we could not effectively tape around the vent pipe at the housing , we took app 4" lengths of tape and taped on to the housing out onto the pipe. We then taped the elbow and added the extension pipe (we bought the elbow, extension pipe & tape pretty cheaply at home depot) We marked how far out we wanted second pipe outside the dryer - it connected to metal flexible tubing; we hack sawed that and then connected it to the flexible tubing & to the outer venting ( We could not get the flexible tubing to fit into the side opening so went with rigid pipe.) My husband & I did it in app 30 minutes start to finish & my small hands and wrists seemed to be an advantage. Also the hack sawing was a difficult and the taping is probably really ugly bunched up stuff on the inside - but does it really matter? So we are dining out tonight with the money we saved

@@repairclinic Since it is a great DIY accomplishment, I wonder if you would considering re-doing the video to show people how they can do this without disassembling the dryer? Your title screen says, "We make fixing things easy." So why do I have to read the comments to find out how to do it the easy way? I would rather find that info in the video. Nice production quality, though.

I'm having a pro do this as I type and he took the entire dryer apart and taped the seams up carefully, with aluminum foil tape. This is more of a design flaw than a repair issue. Apparently some other European model has a much better design for changing the venting. While I think there should be an easier way to do this, a professional follows this approach. A do-it-yourself hack is always an option.

Why on earth would LG or any other company NOT make a simple rear access panel for this expected problem? It's not like we are trying to bore, stroke and supercharge a 427, we just want to realign the vent pipe to fit our storage space and setting. SHEESH.

This was surprisingly accurate even today for a DLE3600W model. Yes, you can probably get away with not disassembling, but dryers aren't something to mess around with - especially when the hottest exhaust air will be hitting the internal piping first. I spent the time to open up and make a custom side vent using box store components - this is the only way to assure all joints are fully taped and secure. You can reuse the factory rear exit pipe, *critically*, with it's angled anchor tab (there's another tab on the chassis bottom about 9" from blower exit) by shortening the piping. Use this as the piece directly off blower. The bracket keeps it secure inside - vent is very close to internal components so this prevents sagging and potential shifting/disconnection caused by stress on the exterior vent piping. Great video - thank you!

This is what I needed to see. I didn’t want to spend $60+ for an elbow a few feet of exhaust pipe

All you have to do is completely remove every screw and part off the dryer until the dryer is absolutely in ready to assemble state before the robots put it together, after the consumer is charged for assembly to begin with.

That's funny because it seems as though you have to take the entire machine apart to do this. An access panel on the bottom would seem the way to go.

There is NO REASON to disassemble the dryer. The most difficult part of this installation is applying the metal tape. That actually took longer than installing the kit. Here's how I did it: My 7300 needed a left side vent. So I laid the dryer on its right side with the left access facing up. Next, I removed the screw holding the back vent pipe in place and pulled the long section of out. Next, pop out the left side plate by reaching through the back and popping it out. (I also removed the bottom plate to give more access which I replaced once vent kit was installed). Now insert the first pipe female (wider) side first and slide it over the blower pipe. Those of you who leave the dryer standing upright will struggle with this next step! Line up the support on the pipe with the hole in the existing support bracket on the bottom of the dryer. Look at the bottom of the dryer and find a small access hole that allows you to see how the holes in the brackets are lining up and assist in directing the screw. Remember to use the screw that came with the Kit at this point. From the back opening, line up the screw driver and tighten the screw. Next, cut 2 lengths of tape a bit longer than you need to go around the pipe. Cut one of these lengths in half and pull back a small bit of paper from each to make the application go easier. Have the full length of tape and remaining pipe within easy reach. Using the rare access, put the elbow inside the dryer, female side first. Do Not connect it to the first pipe yet. Push the male side of the elbow out through the left side access hole about half way. While holding on to the elbow from the outside, insert the male end of the remaining pipe about halfway to its stopping point in the elbow. Now tape this joint. Pull the elbow and taped pipe in far enough to be able to line it up with the center pipe and slide it on leaving about 1 to 1 1/2 inch of the pipe exposed outside the dryer. Here comes the difficult part. Now we need to tape the elbow to the first pipe. If you push the elbow in too far, it will bump up against the support on the bottom of the dryer. Look through the little access hole on the bottom of the dryer and leave yourself a bit of space so the tape can adhered to the pipe without the support getting in the way. It's really difficult to run one single piece of tape completely around this joint, so try and do half at a time. I had a difficult time around the bracket and therefore needed to cut another half length. Once you've applied the tape, close things up. Put the bottom plate back on and then cover the back hole with the plate provided in the kit. For some reason, neither of their screw holes on the plate lined up with the hole on the dryer so I had to drill another to make it work. I hope you are as successful as I was. Have fun!

The side vent was nearly impossible to remove 😡. After hammering the cutout with a mallet and screwdriver on the weld points as well as between the weld points trying to open up a gap, I only succeeded in denting the sheet metal. Nothing would give (after denting it I stopped hammering). So I broke out my Dremmel cutting disc and had to cut about a third of the disc before being able to pry a section out and grab it with large channel-lock pliers to peel and twist the rest of the disc out. Had to use the Dremmel on a few more weld points that wouldn't give. I love how the video shows a hammer tapping out the disc - it was a actually a quite major project here and I was off course very annoyed that I dented the sheet metal around the cutout disc.

Another poor design of LG. The round cover should never be so difficult to knock out. I tried the same way and failed and had to drill many smaller holes around to make it a bit easier to remove the cover.

Watch the video, but DON'T do what it tells you! You don't need to disassemble the dryer to install the side venting kit. All you need to do is lay the dryer on it's front and pop out the bottom vent and side vent. This will give you enough space to work in installing the side venting kit. Also don't bother buying the kit from LG. You can get the parts from Home Depot for under $10. You only need a 4 inch tube and an elbow. Cut the existing LG tube to 11 inches.

I am very confused. I just got a new LG dryer, model DLG4971W, and want to install the side vent. First, I am upset I have to do this but I am one inch short of being able to close the closet door when using the rear vent. The manual says I should be able to do this out the left side of the gas dryer which is what I need but my model number is not listed on any of the compatibility charts. Anyone know if I can install this on my model ? thanks

@repairclinic 10 лет назад
If the manual says you can and the left side wall has a 4" hole with a plug it you should be able to install the side vent kit. Another option may be to try a low profile 90 at the back of the dryer that might give you enough room to close the door. The side venting kit for your model can be found here: www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/Side-Venting-Kit/3911EZ9131X/1266802?TLSID=1773

Most dryers should be side vented to save space in the back. We found a lot of dryers are in a closet it is wider but not deeper enough. The back vent makes the dryer stand outside of the closet and very difficult to close the door.

This video is fine as far as it goes but WILL NOT WORK if your model has the steam option. The steam equipment requires three to four times as much work to remove the steam tray in order to be able to get the drum out. Everything COULD be installed through the vent holes, not even taking the dryer apart at all, except LG neglected to make them shaped to allow anything with a retaining tab to fit through. This whole thing is just really, really bad design! (And then look what they expect you to pay for a $5 elbow!) But... the original straight section has the tab, and fits beautifully on the blower. So I cut the straight section to length, cut the section with the tab and hose-clamped it on there, connected and taped it to a $5 elbow, slid the whole thing in through the front and connected it by reaching in through the vent holes. This calls for disconnecting the three dryer heater wires, which thanks to this video can be clearly seen saving me writing down which color goes where when it was time to reattach. So thanks for the video! It helped me install everything tight and secure as could be. I only wish it had included info on the steam option, so I would not have had to figure out so much on my own. Even better, it should include the home phone number of the moron at LG who designed the side vent! He may not understand English, but the words I have for him are, shall we say, universal.

Late to this thread, but I just purchased the DLEX4000B LG dryer with the steam function. While I did not have the issue Charles had with the steam tray, removal of the drum was doable close to what this video shows. HOWEVER, if you think you are going to left side vent the electric version of this dryer that has steam with the recommended 90 degree kit, you are wrong - as I was. LG engineers conveniently located the water inlet with the solenoid valves and wiring entering the plane of the side vent tubing. You cannot left side vent with the recommended 90 degree kit. I used a couple of 45's essentially to work around this ridiculous mistake on LG's part. I see no reason why they could not have located the valve just a little further up and over to allow this with the standard kit. Nowhere in the manual provided, nor online does it say you cannot left side vent my model dryer. It appears that right side or down venting are options. Too bad I designed my new laundry room around a left side vent.....

Jeff Kolman One can go out back, both sides and bottom on electric dryers but not out the right side of gas dryers due to the burner. I found that out in the manuals and with online chats. As far as whether or not there is still a right side knockout on a gas dryer, that maybe true just due to mass manufacturing. It wouldn't mean that it can be used though. I'm still trying to figure out if I want to go through all this or not. So I'll continue to look into this. Hopefully the newer models have a rear access plate to bypass such a mess.
