LG Firmware Fixes G-SYNC Issues & 120Hz Chroma Subsampling on CX OLED

I've become quite fond of LG. Their support for Freesync and this 444 Chroma subsample update speak positively to their concern for gamers hardware needs.

Vincent I can't imagine your pick-up game being anything other than top notch, considering all of the hilarious bangers you're dropping in these videos.

I just got the 65" CX yesterday and am waiting for availability for the 3080 (I don't really need the 3090). Just wanted to say thanks as you and a few other channels (stop the FOMO, rtings, digital trends, the villa man, etc. I watched a ton of videos before spending that $2250) have finally convinced me to get the CX, and my family and I really love it.

Still waiting for 4k 120hz g-sync update for C9 .. service centers don't know anything about it.

Man, I really need this firmware update. My LG CX 48 doesn't work for crap with G-sync. I get flickering in games unless g-sync is disabled. I can't wait to get this update.

Thanks for this video. I have the lg cx oled 55. Called in to LG and was directed to their website to download a firmware update to Version 03.10.38. I downloaded the update, put it in an LG_DTV folder after formatting my USB drive. TV didn't start the update after plugging it in. Checked the "Reference" tab and found the LG CX 55 pua is not listed. Maybe it's not ready for my model yet.

After searching on Google for "BFI Gysnc same time CX" I found some people who were able to trick the tv into doing Gsync and BFI at the same time and they say it works like intended. Can you do a video about this?

If you are having issues with CX make sure your HDMI is one of the newer ones. I ordered a HDMI 2.1 because my HDMI doesn’t give me 4K with my PS4 PRO

Nice PC build Vincent, clean. I've got a Fractal Define case myself with the tempered glass panel, I love the quality.

That's good and all but I'm still waiting for the glowing issue in Dolby Vision and HDR and also grey blacks in VRR mode to be resolved. At the moment it feels like I'm watching an edge lit LCD when viewing in these modes with my CX 77-inch (turning down the brightness to 49 or 48 doesn't fix the issue and also crushes blacks). These issues didn't exist with my B7

Now microsoft needs to add a cleartype profile for LGs subpixel arangement.

Not seeing any official statements from LG on this fix or firmware being released. It has been made avaialble on Korean and US models, but nothing for Europe/UK versions. I'm wondering if there are any large differences being the models that prevents the fix from working.

Hey Vincent... Can we have you look into one additional issue... LG's G-sync implementation seems to not be all that smooth and stutter free from about 95hz to 120hz. Best way to test, is to take a third person game where your character is stationary and use the arrow keys to pan the camera around them. It is very smooth if you lock the frame rate to 95fps and pan the camera, but if you try it at say 115fps locked, it is not nearly as hiccup free and has stutters here and there.

@HDTVTest Ive noticed extreme stuttering when using a frame rate cap in any game while gsync and vsync and 4k 120 is active Do you also experience this? limit fps with rivatuner or nvidia contol panel to say 115 fps in a game you can get 120 and leave vsync on. (This is the proper way to set up gsync for consistent frametimes and lowest latency). CX48 with 3080 here

I have really bad intermittent flickering (I think you showed it in the video) when I run 4K 120FPS with instant game response set to ON and Gsync set to ON-on a 3090. Is this going to be fixed with this software update?

Almost bought a C9 but went with a BX. everything in this video minus the lower processor vs the CX is applicable. Running an RTX 3080 at Chroma 444 at 10bit 120hz. This is the way. thank you Vincent.

In the same situation with a 48" CX OLED and a RTX3090 since this afternoon, it all works brilliantly but getting the 4:4:4 and G-Sync fix would move it up to god tier. Hoping this firmware becomes available soon, or someone can pass me a download link. ;)

I wonder whether G Sync is better than Freesync , debating whether to get RTX 3080 or the next Big Navi RDNA 2. I wonder if Big Navi will have chroma subsampling issues as well and how well those issues will be resolved .

so i made further testing and made 2 interesting findings: 1. RGB mode in NVIDIA panel can be used with full dynamic range, while with ycbcr 444 it shows limited range. Tho no noticable difference to my eye, neither in-game nor in hdr 4k youtube videos 2. MOST important: i had bad micro-stuttering while G-Sync was on in WoW and THESE SETTINGS made it almost buttery smooth: - in NVIDIA Panel set Vsync to application mode and turn G-Sync on in full+windowed mode and latency mode to Ultra - then INGAME use Vsync on, turn ALL FPS limitations off and - in TV settings TURN OFF AMD Freesync then enjoy!!! all these little tweaks with noticeable improvements make me hope that it just needs some more fine-tuning for LG and Nvidia.

What button on the Remote did you press to bring up the HDMI Diagnostics screen shown @ 1:25? Im on a LG C9.

I just received my 3080 today and can confirm everything seems to be working with the LG SM9000 on HDMI 2.1. G-sync works with 4k at 120 with 4:4:4. However, when switching to that resolution, it can take 2x-3x tries to get it to lock in as there are screen glitches at first, but then once locked in, it's perfect. UPADATE: not working so well. UPDATE #2: Work mostly at 4k with GSYNC off, but some resolutions not working in all games, e.g. 1440

Nice motherboard, and a good network card in there 1 -> 2.5 -> 5 -> 10Gbe. Very expensive !!! I loved the way you slotted the PC build in the middle, did Nvidia provide the kit? Did you plug in the PC before putting all the sides on?

@HDTVTest do you know if a firmware fix is coming for the raised black issues in Dolby Vision content? I’m noticing this issue on my 55” CX. I just got this tv about two weeks ago. I notice the floating blacks and raised blacks in most DV content. Especially in the Star Wars films/shows on Disney+. I always use these movies and shows to test my sets, as I am very familiar with them, and know how they should look. Although it’s not all the time, it’s definitely there and bothering me. I’ve been contemplating on contacting LG about this issue. I assume they’re already aware of the issue tho. I noticed slightly raised black on my old TCL r625 with the same content, but it was a different type of raised blacks, and was primarily caused by being a FALD set, and not being self emissive. Overall, my LG is definitely superior with DV content than my r625, but the raised black, or rather floating blacks is definitely annoying. I really see the floating blacks on logo screens, during the intro of a movie and shows. Last night, it almost looked like I had a FALD set, rather than an OLED. I wish it was easy to describe in words, but it’s rather hard to convey the exact issue I’m having. I do feel like I have a lot of shadow detail due to these raised blacks, so maybe that’s the reason? Who knows... I was hoping to get some insight into the matter. I thought about bumping down the brightness/black level, but definitely feel like that will cause crushed black levels and complete loss of shadow detail.

Samsung released Firmware 1402.1 on all 2020 models except the Q60T. Fixed the dimming bug, added HGiG, etc.

Suggestion: Perhaps one day in the future you might do something none of the tv reviewers do. This is to highlight using an OLED as not just a 16:9 monitor but also test it as a 21:9 display. Giving games more FOV like an ultrawide monitor. The question is will it support more than 60Hz with these latest drivers? Appreciate any owners confirming if custom resolutions will work in 120Hz

I called LG as a C9 owner and the customer service people had no idea wtf I was talking about. I scheduled a repair so a technician can come out and manually add the new firmware.

@7:30 slight correction here. Nvidia briefly updated their 3090 site before the launch and changed it to "8k" and advertised it as a gaming card. It is "just" a Titan card, so similar to 3080 performance but with much more Vram. Thats the idea behind the Titan cards, they are made for CAD designer etc, they need the Vram. Long story short, Nvidia says the 3090 is 8k with DLSS. DLSS is a upsampling technique, the card dies when running 8k native. In AAA games you will get around 5fps at 8k. All the nice 60fps videos you were seeing are DLSS videos.. This is essentially false advertising.

Anything happening with the B9 line? Has it been resolved already or is it just not possible with processor? Lots of mixed messages about this

I see some people complaining about very aggressive ABL in some scenes (like in mario or something like that) - you pan the camera and screen becomes too dim. Did you experienced that?

I have a CX, a 3080, and this latest firmware. Gsync is still completely broken with aggressive screen tearing and jitter when playing games at 4k 120hz. I appreciate this video, but a simple test in a game would show that this display is not performing in the way it was advertised.
