The Hippiearab Podcast --- S1 E7
Music sometimes feels like an intrinsic part of our lives, living life without it would be missing out on a lot. Who says? We are fed this idea that music brings us feel-good emotions and sensations that nothing else can achieve. Having given up music for 6 months, I talk about the struggle of leaving music, but also the undeniable sweetness that comes along with that - sweetness that not everyone can taste because of their insatiable dependence on music.

This is what brings peace to this woman: Quran 2:6--20 Indeed, those who disbelieve - it is all the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them - they will not believe. Allah has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their vision is a veil. And for them is a great punishment. And of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allah and the Last Day," but they are not believers. They [think to] deceive Allah and those who believe, but they deceive not except themselves and perceive [it] not. In their hearts is disease, so Allah has increased their disease; and for them is a painful punishment because they [habitually] used to lie. And when it is said to them, "Do not cause corruption on the earth," they say, "We are but reformers." Unquestionably, it is they who are the corrupters, but they perceive [it] not. And when it is said to them, "Believe as the people have believed," they say, "Should we believe as the foolish have believed?" Unquestionably, it is they who are the foolish, but they know [it] not. And when they meet those who believe, they say, "We believe"; but when they are alone with their evil ones, they say, "Indeed, we are with you; we were only mockers." [But] Allah mocks them and prolongs them in their transgression [while] they wander blindly. Those are the ones who have purchased error [in exchange] for guidance, so their transaction has brought no profit, nor were they guided Their example is that of one who kindled a fire, but when it illuminated what was around him, Allah took away their light and left them in darkness [so] they could not see. Deaf, dumb and blind - so they will not return [to the right path]. Or [it is] like a rainstorm from the sky within which is darkness, thunder and lightning. They put their fingers in their ears against the thunderclaps in dread of death. But Allah is encompassing of the disbelievers. The lightning almost snatches away their sight. Every time it lights [the way] for them, they walk therein; but when darkness comes over them, they stand [still]. And if Allah had willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent. Quran 2: 23-24 And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant [Muhammad], then produce a Surah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses other than Allah , if you should be truthful. But if you do not - and you will never be able to - then fear the Fire, whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers. Quran 2:26 ----- Indeed, Allah is not timid to present an example - that of a mosquito or what is smaller than it. And those who have believed know that it is the truth from their Lord. But as for those who disbelieve, they say, "What did Allah intend by this as an example?" He misleads many thereby and guides many thereby. And He misleads not except the defiantly disobedient, Quran 2:39 ----- And those who disbelieve and deny Our signs - those will be companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally Quran 2:121----Those to whom We have given the Book recite it with its true recital. They [are the ones who] believe in it. And whoever disbelieves in it - it is they who are the losers. Quran 2:147------The truth is from your Lord, so never be among the doubters. Quran 2:161--------Indeed, those who disbelieve and die while they are disbelievers - upon them will be the curse of Allah and of the angels and the people, all together, Quran 2:162------Abiding eternally therein. The punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be reprieved. Quran 2:171-----The example of those who disbelieve is like that of one who shouts at what hears nothing but calls and cries cattle or sheep - deaf, dumb and blind, so they do not understand. Quran 2:174---- Indeed, they who conceal what Allah has sent down of the Book and exchange it for a small price - those consume not into their bellies except the Fire. And Allah will not speak to them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them. And they will have a painful punishment. Quran 2:191 ----- Slay them wherever you may catch them and expel them from the place from which they expelled you. The sin of disbelief in Allah is greater than committing murder. Do not fight them in the vicinity of the Sacred Mosque in Mecca unless they start to fight. Then slay them for it is the recompense that the disbelievers deserve .

Yeah yeah that's great now wanna see me destroy Islam the Quran is the word of Allah isn't it ? meaning the Quran is the word of Allah isn't it ? meaning the Quran is the words of the creator of the universe an all powerful being. So that means the Quran can't have any errors if it does it can't be the word of the creator. Even the Quran acknowledges this (quran:4:82) . Even if the Quran has one error one single error someone can easily discard it as a false religion. That was the premise And here's the error Then turned He to the heaven when it was smoke, and said unto it and unto the earth: Come both of you, willingly or loth. They said: We come, obedient. Then He ordained them seven heavens in two Days and inspired in each heaven its mandate; and We decked the nether heaven with Stars, and rendered it inviolable. That is the measuring of the Mighty, the Knower. Quran 41:11-12 The elements in the Earth's crust and core were first formed in stars by nucleosynthesis. When those stars exploded as supernovas, they expelled the elements that were used in future solar systems such as Earth's own. Modern radiometric dating of meteorites and rocks from the Earth and Moon show that these bodies were formed at the same time as the sun and its other planets, 4.5 billion years ago. The Qur'an, on the other hand, describes the Earth as being fully formed before the stars. If you haven't realized it yet this is the case. A deity who calls himself the creator of the universe doesn't even understand basic cosmology. So since the Qur'an contains a gross and unacceptable scientific error our premise which is backed up by the Quran leads us to the conclusion that Islam is false.

Yeah, sometimes we have to be disciplined for some reasons, but we can do it by working on yourself. We don't have to be in religion for that, if you respect your religion for that. You don't have to cut it. Some people born with musical talents, voices and hearing. It that's how they are. But how come that the have to deny his essence? If we think in logical way, doesn't that mean that you all deny god create that people like this? Or god create people like this and then say them to deny music and his tallents. im crying right now. i feel so nice to have someone share the same experience as me. im almost 18 rn and i left music in early 2021. i felt so alone. but i still persisted. i come from a family where music is very common and it was very difficult to stay firm because there were so many ways of slipping away but alhamdulillah Allah guided me. it was by far the most difficult thing i ever had done. i used to listen music on max volume in my earphones and feel the vibrations in my veins but when i stopped it i felt so empty. i did workouts without music, skipped all the songs part in movies, muted my instagram reels whenever a song was playing, played games without music, deleted my playlist...it just felt very different. at times i wished i could listen to music freely again but ive come so far with so much control i dont think i could ever go back. you are the first person i heard talk about this struggle so freely and realistically. i feel so heard and known. in the car i would force the radio off whenever my siblings put on songs, i would mute the songs playing in movies, i would tell them to mute their phones whenever they were watching a video that contained music, i stopped my parents from watching a singing talent show programme so in a way i kind of felt like a burden telling people do this dont do that and i even felt like a vibe killer. but i knew by doing this i would prevent others from sin as well because i would never ever want my loved ones to fall into sin and get punished for it. its also so difficult trying to explain to people why i took such a big decision...but alhamdulillah always

What an evil teaching! It's been proven that children who study musical instruments are better at maths and science than their peers. Einstein was an accomplished violinist who played his violin every day. Also, some of the greatest treatises on music, including al Farabi's Great Book of Music, were written by Muslim scholars, who organised all the Arab music modes according to the ancient Greek modal system which they learned about via translating ancient Greek writings on music. Also, during the Islamic Golden Age, Music Therapy was a normal part of hospital treatment in Muslim countries.

@Free_Pale_stine I'm pretty sure Einstein remembered a lot more than you do and studied much better than all of you. He loved music and played the violin every day. There are hundreds of long-term studies which show that children who learn to play classical music on instruments do much better academically, especially in maths, science, engineering etc since music develops the parts of the brain used for maths, science etc

@@mustafafrostie Ignore this evil, fundamentalist teaching, my friend. It has nothing to do with God. Classical music, both eastern and western, leads you TOWARDS GOD, not away from him. There is nothing in the Qur'an forbidding music since the "idle tales" mentioned in the Qur'an have no relevance to non vocal music or music with religious lyrics. "Kitab al-Musiqa al-Kabir (Arabic: كتاب الموسيقى الكبير, English: the Great Book of Music) is a treatise on music, in Arabic, by the Islamic Golden Era philosopher al-Farabi (872-950/951). *Allah says,* “Unquestionably, it is only by the remembrance of Allah that hearts are assured.”{Qur’an 13:28} Imam Ibn al-Qayyim (d. 1350), a renowned Muslim theologian, writes, "In the heart, there exists an anxiousness that nothing can calm but drawing nearer to God. And a loneliness overcasts it that nothing can remove but enjoying His company in private. And a sadness dwells within it that nothing can alleviate but the joy of knowing Him and genuinely devoting oneself to Him. And a worry unsettles it that nothing can reassure but focusing on Him and fleeing from Him to Him. And the flames of regret continue to flare inside it, and nothing can extinguish them but becoming content with His commands, prohibitions, and destiny, and patiently holding onto all that until the time one meets Him. And in it exists a pressing demand; it will not stop until He alone becomes its pursuit. And in it is a dire need; nothing will satisfy it except loving Him, constantly remembering Him, and being sincerely devout to Him. And if a person were given this entire world and all it contains, it would never fulfill that need. { Ibn Qayyim al-Jawzīyah, Madārij al-Sālikīn Bayna Manāzil Īyāka Na’budu wa Īyāka Nasta’īn (Beirut: Dār al-Kutub al-ʻArabī, 1996), 3:156.}

I read this book about Music, Islam and science 'Music Made Me Do it' as well as another with Hadith and stories from the Sahaba and Taab'een that talked about music. One story was about a man walking past a house, hearing someone sing beautifully with musical instruments playing and saying, "If only this person would recite the Quran" The man who was singing heard this and went to the other, deciding to give up music as well.

@maddiec6186 nearly, can confidently say I'm way more better than I was four months ago and no longer feel any desires/urges to listen to I still do just not as often or frequent. Insha Allah I'll be able to get rid of it completely by the end of this year. Can say though I feel a lot more at peace and I feel like I have so much more time since music used to take up a lot of my time and was like a temporary escape from things and am able to really see the small pleasures in life, especially in our everyday lives @maddiec6186

Farah Farah Farah. You’ve NO idea how much I (just like alot of others here) needed this. Subhan’Allah. This video truly came as a sign. I quit music a little over two years ago but in the last few weeks I realised that i was slowly relapsing because how much i was getting exposed to music in my educational institutions. The guilt was gradually decreasing and i am afraid that i might actually have went back to listening fully to it astagfirullah. But this, right here, is exactly what I needed alhamdulillah. When i had first quit, I only listened to the Quran and it was amazing but then I slowly started listening to vocal versions of nasheeds and nasheeds where the music was produced with hand and now i feel like the latter was a mistake as it still gave me the feeling of listening to music despite being hand produced. In the last fee months I also started listening to vocals versions of bollywood songs, another mistake right there. But now i can clearly see where i went wrong and know what not to do. “Being tested by Allah is an honor,” yeah, this is going right to my wall. I have also been having really hard time because of various reasons but this reminder has made me look at those sufferings and my grief as a blessing and a way for greater good rather than a burden. So thank YOU. Jazak’Allah khair. May Allah bless you immensely and keep you steadfast on his path.

Quitting music is a form of dopamine detox. The funny thing is that when you quit simple pleasures everything becomes more attractive sort of. And when your dopamine receptors come back to normal, that’s when you have to choose to get “hooked” on what you know is positive and productive. Doing what we have to do isn’t always fun. But when you give up everything else and give yourself no choice that’s when it becomes interesting, allowing you to finally enter flow.

Literally has nothing to do with dopamine. If it were, then you'd need to stop eating, stop having sex, stop working out, stop literally ANYTHING that would release dopamine. But you are clearly not going to do that. So this idea that it's about the dopamine is complete bullshit

I’ve been a musician my whole life and even studied music in college and only recently have I realized something that’s begun to change the way I perceive music. Why is it that when I want to hear live music(regardless of genre) it’s always in an environment where drinking alcohol and/or taking drugs are a common occurrence? Seriously, every performance I’ve ever done outside of school has always been in a bar or some type of venue where alcohol is served and people are expected to drink. Me and my band mates would always joke about how the audience would be too drunk to care if we sounded good or not so we just had to do our best and get through the gig. I’ve been trying to deepen my understanding of Islam for a little while now and I’m in a place now where I feel like I can’t condone putting myself in those kinds of environments anymore. Even if I don’t partake in the “festivities” with everyone else I’d still be supporting the establishments that allow these activities to take place. I’ve always had a deep appreciation for the history and storytelling aspect of music but that too is entrenched in drug and alcohol use among other things. I wish I could make the case that certain genres like jazz or classical or even lofi music don’t promote these things but that would just be a lie. They’re just as guilty as everything else if not more so. It’s disheartening to know that I may have to give up my passion for music in my pursuit to be closer to Allah, but after hearing your story I am convinced that it might just be the path I have to take. It certainly won’t be easy given my whole identity has been encompassed by music, but I know it can be done. I hope to be as devoted as you are in finding peace through Allah one day and I’m willing to make that sacrifice if that’s what it takes. Thank you for sharing your wisdom. If you read my comment to the end, just know you’ve given me a lot to think about and I hope that you continue to stay strong through the rest of your journey.

thats not necessarily true. correlation isnt causation. think of classical concerts or operas. its live music without alcohol and everyone is paying attention to the performance. its just that for pop, rock, etc concerts its a more energetic and social experience rather than a mindful personal experience. naturally, people that drink alcohol are inclined to drink at a social event because alcohol is a social lubricant.

I've been cutting out music for non-religious reasons but as I've been doing it I've noticed how messed up music is. It completely takes over your brain, I still hear songs in my head all day even without listening to any. It's also great to head someone so excited about their religion, inspires me to pray more and such even if we have a different religion.

I'm a christian, but recently I've been reading a lot about islam's view of music and while I don't exactly agree with all of it, I've definitely been getting a few good lessons from it, so your video came on a perfect time haha I just have been feeling something in my heart telling me to just sit in silence. Your video about boredom also helped me a lot on this topic. I noticed that I use music to fill my mind so that I don't have to be alone with my thoughts, and that's obviously not healthy at all, but it's definitely a huge problem in my generation. Also the fact that sometimes I listen to music with lyrics that clearly glorify sin but I always come up with some kind of excuse like "but the beat is so good, I can just ignore the lyrics" which proves how humans are obsessed with pleasure, going as far as doing stuff we know we shouldn't just because it makes us feel good. I don't plan on completely quitting music, but this video definitely gave me strength to at least do *something* about not being able to go against my fleshly desires with 0 self-control. haven’t fully watched the video yet (only around 4 mins in) but i used to crazy obsessed with music and i was also in denial of the fact it was haram, looking for literally anything, anyone, to say it was halal. i was constantly struggling trying to quit , but Alhamdullillah, it happened one day, i just didn’t listen to music for that ENTIRE day then the days after that, then it became easy, then the addiction was finally gone. thank you Farah for all ur podcasts, i’m a new viewer and there isn’t much content for the audience your videos target (even less female content creators). Jazak Allahu Khaira, i know many including myself will benefit. take care and sorry for making this awfully formal! :)

Farah. I cant express how much you've helped me. 1 month ago, i saw this video the day after i quit music. Today, like the moment you had, i had a moment when i was listening to a Quran recording and everything changed. I dont think i wanna listen to anything ever again, it touched my heart like nothing else and i say this as someone who used to listen to music 24/7. In this past month, I've gotten so much closer with Allah, much closer than i ever have before. Thank you. So much.

Here’s suggestion sister. Keep listening to Quran reciters with English translation or not sometimes. I prefer listening to local Nigerian reciters(channel named basmad where he dedicates everything to promoting Quran), sheikh shuraim, tawfeeq as Sayegh(he’s from my country Eritrea). They are so much better than music because they have tajweed and beautify their voice in an amazing way that is spiritually touching because you FEEL the words.

Finally, last year I completely quit and it has felt lonely. It still does to an extent but I’m a lot more comfortable with it. Now, I realize how true that statement about music and Qur’an not staying in the same heart is. Cuz I don’t have music in my heart anymore and feel so close to the Qur’an. I start listen nasheeds while driving. There is usually a specific one I listen to. It gives me so much chills, I think about life in a positive way and it makes me nervous when someone else is driving with me and wants to listen to songs which gives a “vibe”. Since than I am driving with nasheeds I feel more safe, more focus on the car drive, but also I don’t have the feeling I need to drive differently to catch the vibe of the song. Also, driving can might me dangerous and it helps me control my driving. Of course I can not control somebody else, but if something bad should happen the last thing would be listening to something that gives me comfort. I don’t know how to explain, but also when I am on a plane I usually listen to the Quran. I feel so safe, I don’t deal with anxiety, I am with my thoughts knowing Allah is listening knowing my thoughts, but also he is giving me advice.

This comment i can totally relate to. When driving with music im more reckless, drive fast, not concentrating, and have an ego boost like im so much more cooler than others cuz of my music taste. When I put on Quran which is here and there I feel so much more at peace, smoother driving, safe, calm and i dont have any anxious or worries. And things always go right for me when I listen to Quran recitation when driving . Such big differences i seen positive impact when I listen to Quran when in the car driving compared to like music. I deleted my music playlist i still have habits but i have a Quran playlist instead. May Allah make it easy for us all Ameen.

*Allah says,* “Unquestionably, it is only by the remembrance of Allah that hearts are assured.”{Qur’an 13:28} Imam Ibn al-Qayyim (d. 1350), a renowned Muslim theologian, writes, "In the heart, there exists an anxiousness that nothing can calm but drawing nearer to God. And a loneliness overcasts it that nothing can remove but enjoying His company in private. And a sadness dwells within it that nothing can alleviate but the joy of knowing Him and genuinely devoting oneself to Him. And a worry unsettles it that nothing can reassure but focusing on Him and fleeing from Him to Him. And the flames of regret continue to flare inside it, and nothing can extinguish them but becoming content with His commands, prohibitions, and destiny, and patiently holding onto all that until the time one meets Him. And in it exists a pressing demand; it will not stop until He alone becomes its pursuit. And in it is a dire need; nothing will satisfy it except loving Him, constantly remembering Him, and being sincerely devout to Him. And if a person were given this entire world and all it contains, it would never fulfill that need. { Ibn Qayyim al-Jawzīyah, Madārij al-Sālikīn Bayna Manāzil Īyāka Na’budu wa Īyāka Nasta’īn (Beirut: Dār al-Kutub al-ʻArabī, 1996), 3:156.}

As a young Muslim, I thought music was fun and harmless and could make any moment less boring. I was devastated when I first heard it was forbidden in Islam and read about the genesis of music in which it implies Satan invented it. I refused to believe that and continue listening to music to rid my boredom. Ever since I reached an adolescent age(18-19 years), I lost the same happiness and thrill I felt when I listened to music and started to grow lethargic from listening to it. I take this as a sign that music isn’t everything and it can be good to live without music. Same with showing women’s awrah, I wanted to look presentable and declined Allah’s orders for women to cover themselves. Now, I hate showing my arms and legs and I have recently considered resorting to wearing hijab. Nowadays, music is just irritating noise and it fogs your brain so it hinders you from thinking clearly from my experience. I just felt like sharing my story on a relevant video. You tried to guess the way a non-believer sees giving up music for Allah. Well, I have no way to tell you what everyone else in the planet thinks, but if they think like me, they would just think it's sad. Music is something that brings joy to my life. Whenever I'm in the bathroom and I start singing, or I hear some music that makes me want to dance or sing along, I'm just caught by some internal energy I didn't know existed. It's something that takes me out of my normal state of mind, in which I have a very logical and serious brain, and makes me act based on feelings. It makes me feel more alive, to feel less stressed. Now, of course it can't be all the time. I really like singing, but I can't sing all the time, and I get tired of listening to music sometimes. I just think that from all things you can have a "dependence" on, music is such a harmless thing to cut out of your life. I've seen people get addicted to alcohol, to sex or videogames, to the point where it becomes a serious problem in their lives. But, music? I've never seen people lose their jobs because they're listening to too much music, or stop taking care of their family because of music, you know? And I would add more to it. Organized religion often encourages people to cut some things out of their lives (even though these things are actually harmless of even good for them), so that the religion will be the only thing that's able to bring joy to them. Jehovah's witnesses, for example, encourages believers to refrain from most celebrations. They can't have birthday parties because that's considered too selfish, and can't go to other people's birthday parties either. Of course, that impacts JW's social life. In this scenario, one of the only sources of joy they can have are religiously related, and that is very powerful in keeping them from leaving.
@ilsev.3656
@ilsev.3656 Год назад
couldn't agree more. Music to me is such a universal human thing, it inspires and brings joy and comfort to so many people. A certain religion once tried to make me leave music, I felt horrible. I remember listening to my first song again after leaving the religion, it was so freeing. All human cultures have rythm and music, it's a social thing, expression of creativity, source of inspiration. Now I dance, sing, play the drums and it brings rythm and energy to my life. As a woman, I wouldn't even be allowed to sing in islam, just because my voice could be tempting. Come on now, I want to sing!! When I don't sing, I feel like part of me is missing. Cutting out many other positive stimuli apart from religious ones, so you focus only on the religion, sounds very cultish and isolating to me.

I no longer have stimulus to escape into my dreams as I did before every time I put my headphones on. Previously I liked house music...I even forgot how exactly it is called lol...and I used to dance Shuffle, dreamt of visiting musical festivals and dancing there half naked... Now every day, honestly, every single day I think of a fact how short is this life, how amazing it is, how perfectly this world is designed which brings me to tears sometimes. Music is a creative out let for me. You can say the same thing about other creative outlets, be it hanging out, dancing, weddings, rituals etc. I also make music, I study music so I connect with it on a deeper level. IF NOT listening to Music makes you feel better, than You have other underlying issues and its not about Music. Also, if it works for you sure, but it shouldn't be something to be expected of everyone else to do. No one should give up something for the sake of an arbitrary conceptual Being that you cannot see. not healthy at all

I stopped listening to music in Ramadan 2020, and it happened that I felt I didn't need to listen to it after that Ramadan. I, later on, realised that stopping it makes you focus more on the message of what you're listening to. And many songs don't have any messages, it's made just for you to listen to the beats. I listened after a couple of years of stopping to some of my favourite songs, and realised that I was just listening to the beats, the lyrics don't actually make sense they just fit the beats. Especially after getting deep in the meanings of the Quran, and being able to listen closely to the words of it, it makes no-music come even close to the wording (messages) of the Quran. Makes you dislike music and see it kind of silly. Alhamdulellah for being able to experience this. Thank you for putting your thoughts in this video, that I can share now with family and friends. May Allah guides us and keep us on the straight path.

Thank you , you really inspired me. Most of us who were born muslims never question our Iman. It's easy to become a muslim by taking decision to become one or you can be born as a muslim , but for Iman it's different it's not a decision it's a feeling you cannot control, it can increase as it can decrease. When I compare my Iman now and my Iman when I was a child I feel like it has decreased a lot. when you're child there's not a lot of challenges and Haram things so when you speak with Allah or when you read quran you feel good and you feel honest , but when you start growing up and there's a lot of challenges and Haram things music, fashion, movies, tiktok... After consuming this content knowing that it doesn't follow Islam standards, at first you start feeling guilty when you pray or when you listen to quran because you fill as an hypocrite ( you will feel this if you still have an average amount of Imane ) and if you continue with those Haram things you will start to enjoy them more and the feeling of guilt will decrease and you'll start going to Zombie mode everytime you do something related to Allah like praying or listening to quran. I'm facing the same problem as you where facing before quitting music , I think I don't feel as I'm supposed to feel when I listen to quran or when I pray. I'll try to follow you advice , Thank you ربي يجازيك

Alhamdulillah i started quiting music about a year ago now and Alhamdulillah its not tempting anymore- compared to listening to Qur'an, music comes so short. its like trying the best food in the world and it ruins all the other normal food to you- thats a weird example but you get what i mean. Qur'an calms you down so much and makes your heart feel at ease, Whilst music just simply doesnt do the same- it works you up and puts you on a high that when is lost makes you feel depressed and sad.

really needed this. im trying to cut out music (at least for ramadan) and it has been incredibly frustrating!! it made me realise just how much i depended on music for studying and doing mindless daily tasks and i feel like i havent been able to DO anything because of it. i no longer feel encouraged to study because im so used to doing it just to put on my playlist, i dont feel like reading or cleaning my room because i dont have any background noise, i feel like i cant enjoy any of the movies or shows or even youtubers i used to enjoy bcuz of music being in everything!!! its frustrating to no end but this video really really helped me feel not alone in this struggle and inshaAllah ill be able to get over these struggles even if it takes time⚘⚘ جزاك الله خير

Also idk why but music tends to make people idealize others and situations. I think its bad to idolize any human being. I lost a friend and I related to a song. So it made me cry and comforted me. Music can be bad in the sense it invokes feelings that maybe you didnt feel or music can be good because it can give u comfort. Im just in the beginning of the video, and I relate to it so hard. Ive been trying to quit music, but I felt like I needed that pleasure. But really, I was chasing a feeling that I should be feeling without that stimuli. Thank you, a fellow muslim

Can I be honest? I really appreciate the way you opened up about this problem or topic. There was no guilt projected 🥹 I realized that I was really into music when I was younger and growing up I was longing to be myself again. I thought maybe getting back to things I really enjoyed might bring that happiness I had back. After awhile I kind of realized that the way I thought changed a bit, the way I talked, the way other things weren’t as joyful like they used to be. There was only music. After going through so much it clicked. It’s hard not having music played in the background while doing anything or going out and having no headphones on etc. but I feel more comfortable and in ease? Idk there are less peak emotions and I feel more calm or relaxed.

every once and a while I give up music, and I realize how much I read and learn without music. Music caused me to dance and dancing didn’t cause me to learn anything, it just felt good, and sometimes feeling good is not enough. I hope I don’t go back to music, its been a few weeks now. Its amazing how nauseous I’ve felt without it, I’ve had to take anti nausiants lately, I think it really does effect the brain somehow. Oh Allah SWT please make it an easy success for those of us on our journey to be free from music.

No one can truly cut themselves off from music because, as a musician myself, there is music in everything. Birds singing in the morning, trees blowing in the wind, the flow of rivers, the pouring of rain, the sound of people walking on the street: that is all music. Music is not something to be feared or treated like some opiate. Music is the very rhythm of life and it is a GIFT from Allah (swt), not a distraction from Him.

I agree with you. I simply believe that no one but Allah (S.W.T.) could create something magnificent like music. Just imagine, only 7 notes can create such a beautiful melodies and it is a miracle in itself. While listening to music (and I mean not the “music” that the media feeds us but real, soulful melodies) I feel the same as when I observe the nature, fruits, their scents etc. and just remember Allah (S.W.T)and be grateful to Allah (S.W.T) for giving us all these gifts that he gave us. When speaking about hadiths from our Prophet (p.b.u.h), during the pre-Islamic times in Makkah, the gatherings where all kinds of sins were present were usually accompanied by music. Therefore to avoid these sins, the Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) prohibited Muslims from attending the gatherings with music. I think the problem was not in the music in particular but in those events where music was present.

Agree! It's unfortunate lots of Muslims are relying of Salafi sources like IslamQA which they found from top Google search results. These Salafi organizations have the most money and power which they used to market themselves through Google SEO. Non-Salafi Muslim organizations don't have much funding so it's difficult for their websites to show up in Google search results.

Guys yes it is true tune and melody is beautiful and a gift from the Almighty. Prophet Dawood As was known to have a beautiful Quranic melody voice and our Prophet Muhammad PBUH also said in a hadith that they are not of us those who don't sing the Qur'an. Here what Farah and what all Muslims talk about is instrumental music which shaytan made and manipulated to distract us. Singing with voice and melody with voice is not haraam otherwise the gift of the revelation that we have from the Almighty himself above seven skies wouldn't of been read in a beautiful melodic way and that is the gift and miracle . Just look at how music is used today to distract and put filthy ideas I'm mean the music and lyrics that exsist today are so disgusting some even promote murder. That kind of music distracts and dysttoys while singing with our own gifted voices whether in nasheeds it reading the divine revelation Qur'an is calming beautiful and brings you closer to the most beautiful ❤️
