@@kombik7189 yes, you can. Up to two octaves down; though for “Lonely Boy”, one octave is enough. Dan Auerbach uses a Boss PS-5 or PS-6 on this, which can do an automatic dive bomb triggered by kicking the footswitch. I could get very close to this effect by MIDI-controlling the M5 from my Boss ES-5, which can send a ramp-down via MIDI CC#100 to the M5, shown in this vid: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ddyIMC6RUw0.html ... but if you practice a bit, it should also work fine with “manual” dive bombs from the expression pedal.

@@TheGuacamoleXplosion thanks, mate!😊 I’m currently using a ZOOM 505 with an expression pedal but it’s gotta be at least 25 years old and it’s been unreliable.

Update: I grabbed a Dunlop Volume (X) pedal today and it works well with the M5. NOTE!! You need to undo the base, push the button in to reverse the polarity, and turn the resistance trim pot up to its maximum. To begin with I thought it wasn’t compatible and I’d done a 2 hr round trip for nothing. But with this adjustment it’s excellent.

Came back years later to see how to make the harmony for Dogs again hahahaha

Thanks :-) And yes, 100% sure. I have dsp bypass only on very few presets where I need delay/verb to trail on after switching the effect off. All the rest of the presets are on true bypass. You can clearly hear the difference, especially when you have a fuzz active in front of the M5.

That's good to hear. I was initially thinking about using the M5 in a loop switcher (Voodoo Labs Pedal Switcher) but realised it would cut the trails off. This way I can have the M5 out of the switcher and control it with the FCB1010. Thanks for that! :-)

Yes, you can use the M5 with expression pedal also as a wah, or a s a volume pedal. But like always with the M5, it can only do one effect simultaneously, so when you use it as a volume pedal, it cannot be a delay or something at the same time (only exception: The built in noise gate can be used on top of any other effect). I never had problems with the Line6 expression pedal, but for a piece of plastic, it’s also kinda expensive. With the right adapter cable (TRS to TS), you can use almost any expression pedal with the M5. Hi Bill, yes you can control every parameter on display via expression pedal.

Line6 uses TS connectors, so Exp pedals with TRS will not work (unless you get a special cable soldered I guess). The Line6 EX-1 is about 66 EUR at the moment; which is rather much for a plastic pedal, and probably a tiny bit more than your 50 GBP budget. I guess cheapo 25 EUR expression pedals have similar quality like the EX-1, but make sure to find one that works with the M5.

Hi Dan, thanks. You can control all of the up to 5 parameters of each M5 effect model. For each of these parameters, you can define a heel and a toe value. You can see them in the display as small gaps in the rectangular box for each parameter in the display. I used to have the Line 6 Expression Pedal. Sold it meanwhile. Now, I have a small no-name expression knob. Does the job, too. You just need a TRS to TS adapter, since M5 Exp in is TS, and most expression pedals have TRS connectors.

Hi Dan, I did record other bands in the 1990s, and my own bands more recently ... but I found other people are much better at recording :-)

MIDI CC#11=127 for on and CC#11=0 for off should work, I use it all the time sent from my Boss ES-5. Maybe something else is wrong? Your M5 DOES respond to program changes sent by the Ampero, right?

I think it’s only the tube delay algo from the M5. Maybe with some spring reverb from the amp.

Sorry for the very late response ... yes, you can. Any of the 5 parameters that the M5 offers per effect model, and any combination of them, can be controlled by Expression Pedal, with individual heel and toe settings. So, you could create a preset where heel would be like 15% delay mix and 90% repeats, and toe would be like 50% delay mix and 75% repeats.

M5 uses TS connection for expression pedal; most other companies use TRS. So, you can either get the dedicated expression pedals from Line 6 or from other companies (like Mission Engineering). Or, you need a TS to TRS adapter; with the right wiring, it will make almost any expression pedal work with the M5.

The M5 works with a TS jack, most expression pedals have TRS, so does the EV30. So you will most probably need some kind of adapter cable. A standard insert cable will do.

My expression pedal is permanently connected, thus settings remain stored. Anyhow, did you try to first power down the M5, then disconnect expression pedal; and re-connect expression pedal before powering up again? The M5 manual says: “TIP: If you want to ‘clear out’ your expression pedal settings: Disconnect your expression pedal momentarily, tweak any parameters that you want to “clear” the expression pedal control of, and reconnect your pedal to start fresh with setting up your expression pedal control settings for those parameters.” - so, at least tweaking parameters while having the pedal disconnected should erase expression settings for those parameters by design. Also, you may wanna switch Autosave off in the setup menu. That way, changes will only be saved if you explicitely save.

@@TheGuacamoleXplosion Thanks for the help, you are correct, if you unplug the unit, then you can disconnect the expression pedal and not lose your settings. Haven't tried switching off Autosave but that makes sense also.

it's actually very easy. Connect the exp pedal to the m5, switch on the m5, go to the preset you want to edit. Put exp pedal in heel position, tweak the 5 m5 knobs to your liking. Now put exp pedal in toe position and change those of the 5 knobs that you want to be changed by exp. Save. done.

nope. The Strymon Timeline is, the M5 not (nor any other Line6 pedal that I know off). The M5 can be switched to be true bypass, on per-preset base. That would be fully analog of course; but only as long as the M5 is bypassed. As soon the M5 is active, it will digitize your entire signal, dry and wet part. not all, but a lot of them. And for all effect models that can sync to MIDI clock, you can always also de-activate that sync by putting in an absolute speed rather than a note subdivision value. Turning up speed knob fully clockwise will alternate between absolute speed/time values and note subdivisions.

In this vid, I used the plastic one from Line6. Sold it at some point; nowadays I mostly use my Sonuus Voluum sending expression via MIDI to the M5. M5 reacts very good and quickly to MIDI expression, hardly any difference to using an analog expression pedal.
