Dan, you’re entitled to keep your private life private regardless of what the others may say. You need some semblance of a private life for the sake of your sanity if nothing else. Yours is one of my fav videos mainly because you come across as genuine and don’t sugar-coat anything about the renovation. I appreciate that. Hello from Ontario Canada 🇨🇦🍁🐈⬛🐈⬛
I couldn't agree more! So many people share so much uber personal info on social media - often about other people too, and I sometimes wonder how they feel when they know their mum's telling the world about their problems with.... etc.
I agree. But those of us who started watching from the beginning , grew to enjoy a small bit of his boy’s antics and cute comments. So there can be a balance
I love the fact that your vlogs are about the work and not much else. The main reason I stopped watching Stephanie's vlog is because the work on the chateau became a very small facet of the video. Dan, your subscriber numbers continue to grow because people like your content. If they didn't, they wouldn't watch. Keep up the good work! Just a suggestion - for the jobs you really don't want to do, like the brick work, hire someone to do it for you. It will cost you a bit more, but it will be worth it in the end. 😉
Why is DAN so good to follow; he is honest, never overestimates himself, delivers a super great production in story, in filming and in editing.... again and again and tomorrow again….
Thank you Dan & Nick for the information and to know that American rules to refurbishing a home (or chateau) are the the same! The outside has to look the same, but the inside is however you wish to do it, especially when it comes to safety and livability. Well done on the planting, well done gentlemen. I appreciate every episode!! Share a cup of coffee with Nick if you would please, he has earned it.
I honestly thought you were mad when you bought this chateau but I was wrong. You have put life back into that destroyed structure. I see your journey and it’s inspiring.
Missed the live but ive got to say Nick puts many younger men to shame! Im enjoying the gardening and the building but I wouldn't have the skills or the patience to tackle anything like this. We're all in awe of you Dan so thanks for doing this!
there are drawbacks ---they often offer nothing to native birds and insects, and nothing grows under them. In the west of Scotland there was a big effort to get rid of thise which had gone wild---thousands and thousands.
They are quite lovely when planted in clumps. I grew up on the coast of California next to the Rhododendron park. It was where I was married. They are so majestic. You have chosen well Dan.
Good idea to plant the garden in advance so that when the chateau is finished in 2 years or so the bushes and plants you have put in will be well established and making an effect. My wife and I did this with a holiday home we renovated albeit on a much smaller scale on the East coast of the UK.
The Chateau will be finished in about another 8 years on current progress if you allocate what's actually completed to what remains to be done (This is not a criticism of the progress achieved, more of a reality check on Dan's forward planning optimism, perhaps he should make a list and chalk off what's done and what is left to do but we won't hold our breath on that one), obviously the extra hand on building work will help to shorten the time scale but not by much. Hopefully they will carry out the roof work in Summer as indicated, another Winter on the roof will be a big mistake!?!
Thank you for the reply. My comment of 2 to 3 years wasn't a realistic one as I know from my own experience. You start a job and then find 2 others "under" it that need doing first. You can't plan for that - easier on a new build.
Dan I'm so glad you are putting Rhododendrons at the entrance of the Chateau, they will be beautiful there. You are so lucky to have Nick there to help you, he is such a great friend and helps you so much. Can't wait to see all the plants in bloom.. Kathy 🇺🇸
Rhodies. take some time to grow, so I would not put any more in between; and they also grow very large. We have a great Rhododendron gardens in the Dandenong Ranges, Victoria; and grew a few ourselves. It is good to know your time-frame of when the roof goes up. Cheers. Jane
Dan I commend you again for the compassion and concern you express in your communication to this audience! You make us feel like family! It’s so warm and heartfelt that it makes us feel a part of the experience. One can’t keep this up for a year of consistent effort as a ruse, so it must be REAL !!! Thank you sir.!! Love the project!
@roby803 I agree, I am British and follow many château renovations, I love it when they have deliveries and help and we get to hear them talking in French to each other as it serves to remind me where they are. I would love to live in France, its beauty is beyond compare 😊 perhaps when I win the lottery, I too can come and renovate a dream château 😊
@@liliaalvarez4944 Oui je sais mais il parle trop vite pas le temps de lire et de regarder les vidéos en plus les traduction sont souvent approximatives
I have to disagree with you about what we want or don’t want to see in your vlog. We love watching you do anything. Work, planning, play - everything! I thoroughly enjoyed you and Steph taking the dogs on walkies and you scaring the stuffing out of Steph speeding around the grounds. It was great fun to watch, so understand we enjoy it all!
There is a certain magical joy between you and Stephanie! The fun you two share and the simple obvious enjoyment of each other's company is truly lovely and heartwarming. I loved it !
Dan. The live sessions are great. And you are a natural in front and behind the camera. The project is developing so well and let's get to 500k subs asap
I agree 100% to keep private life private but it sure was fun to see the running of the dogs with the four wheeler. An occasional bit of footage like that would be fun as well as all the work.
Have you read about Frederick Law Olmsted and his work at Biltmore in Asheville, NC? Vanderbilt (when he bought the land and was building his house) brought in Frederick Law Olmsted to bring the land back to its original state (or as close to it) as the land had been overused and abused. I believe the idea of forestry (in the US, anyway) began with their work at Biltmore. It's absolutely breathtaking to see, even today. The idea of having a landscaped forest, both wild, natural, and manicured, is a sight to see. Reminds me of what y'all are doing. :)
Olmsted's sons carried on the business and went on to design many municipal parks in cities. The city of Spokane Washington touts many glorious parks designed by them (Manito, Duncan Gardens, etc). I recently found that their entire report/plan is available online and discovered that many of the gorgeous tree-lined boulevards on South Hill were part of their original plans. Effectively they treated an entire section of a city as a massive estate.
To add on to the previous poster, there's a very famous golf course in Augusta, Georgia, built on the site of one of the largest nurseries in the southeastern United States, where two brothers bred and grew a variant of the rhododendron family. The Azalea (both Indica and Nudiflora varieties). If your climate is right, and the soil acidity is good, then these would be an excellent complement. Alphonse Berckman, who was one of the brothers who owned Fruitlands Nursery, always admonished his clients and customers to intersperse white blooming plants among those pinks and reds, to increase the visual depth and complexity. You might want to consider adding in a few white ones, to go with the pink ones you have already.
YES! I haven’t been to Biltmore yet but will soon! I just moved from Texas to the South Carolina coast and while we were searching out places to live, we did end up on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We went to a museum that explained exactly what you said about Biltmore, Vanderbilt, and Frederick Law Olmsted! He did an incredible job! We were lucky to have him! “The forest found in the western part of Frederick County is part of one of the most diverse temperate forest regions in the world, the Appalachian-Blue Ridge forest ecosystem. This ecoregion extends from Alabama to New York and covers an area approximately the size of South Dakota. Only the temperate forests found in Central China compare with this region for the sheer number of plant and animal species present, many of which are “endemic”, found only in this area.”
FLO (Olmstead) also designed the gardens of Central Park in New York City, the Public Garden in Boston, MA and the yards of several private homes such as a beautiful property in Exeter, Nh near me.
The drive is already so naturally beautiful. Great that Nick knows how to manage the trees for growth and health and all the thinning and trimming/cutting has been done. Then all the love and intention of holding the history in high regard - everything you do with the chateau and the grounds will be wonderful. ❤❤
I agree, I love seeing the planting happening, it's bringing the grounds back to life instantly and as far as the sounds, I too prefer the Natural sounds instead of background music.
Dan once the landscaping is in and everyone sees the beauty from one of the balconies at the Château they will appreciate all of the hard work you and Nick put in. I look forward to seeing the plants bloom and grow. So for those that don’t enjoy the planting. I’m one who enjoys the planting. your thoughtfulness in placing the plants in the end. As I do enjoy the building being outdoors and seeing the progress is enjoying too. Thank you for sharing.
You're the real eye candy DAN. House is cool as heck but it's you that makes the show. I love the way you mix things up and enjoy seeing familiar faces like Kat and Stephanie.
I can and l am in Tokyo, where the Rhododendrons and Azaleas are flowering magnificently. Plant some Azaleas at the front, the single large flowers. They are from the same species.
@@gerrittates7195 Dan explained that they have been waiting on materials, and it's nice for them to be able to take a break. There is plenty of time to get back to the building 🙂 God bless
Dan the man you are doing a fantastic job along with Nick and Cameron along with who ever come's along to help the chateau and grounds change every day keep doing what you are all doing bravo to you all 🎉😊
It was nice having my coffee with yall this morning. The grounds around the chateau are really looking good. The progress is going way faster than I expected.
I think your approach of reviving the landscape while you are working on the structure is a no brainer. Very practical and is gives you a break from working with ladders and scaffolding. Rock on!!!
Ill be honest, the main reason I first clicked on your videos so so many months ago was with the hope that the gardens would feature as part of your journey. I got sucked in to the building stuff which is why I am still here but I am all for more gardening content :))
Yes, Steph was brilliant! She is right when she said that you were a man of vision, but get those banisters finished, I felt realy sick going up the ramps!
Especially enjoy the planting episodes! It’s all fabulous inside and out! This property was never purchased before because YOU were the right man for the job. Thank you for sharing the journey.
Watching you plant rhododendrons reminds me of my own experience of buying and renovating an old brick house in Vermont (USA). When I acquired it, like yours, its yard was overgrown with weeds and scrap brambles, etc. With the help of a friend who worked at a local nursery, I was able to get several rhodies, which replaced the brambles, and made for a very acceptable foundation planting and spring blooms ever since. Best of luck with your own landscaping and continued progress with chateau and its grounds !!
Love watching Anna and Elsa. Such good Dogs. AND lucky dogs to be free to roam this wonderful property. Your landscape is just wonderful. By the time the Chateau is ready to be lived in the view will be amazing. Great Planning! Glad to hear you will have more help coming. What happened to Cameron?????
Thanks Dan and Nick, wonderful to share your beautiful place. It already is so peaceful and the plantings look great. So enjoy seeing the progress, the efforts of all your hard work❤
I did not realise you were doing a live tonight I would have joined you. Things are looking amazing around the grounds as well as your progress on the Chateau. Congrats on all your progress
I grew up near mixed deciduous and evergreen forests where wild azaleas, (cousins??? to rhododendrens) and wisteria dotted the mid-level forest and their color could be spied in the distant woods. It was magical. We'd walk a while and discover a patch of the flowering shrubs, ferns and even climbing old roses. So beautiful! Chaumont's forest is bringing it all to mind. Beautiful work and you and Nick are bringing the "magic" back to the château.
Good day to you Dan. From NYC. Love all that you are accomplishing. It's a monumental task but you and Nick are performing a miracle on the chateau. Thanks for sharing your project with us.
Good to see the progress of the gardens. You can enjoy the gardens as you look out from the chateau as you go and will feel inspired by the view. Love you guys and your dream.
The left over plastic pots from the Rhododendrons will make excellent planters for the Chateau steps & terraces, eventually. Great for creating seasonal interest as the year progresses - Spring, Summer, Autumn, and even Winter if the fancy takes you, Dan. Bulb planting in your soils would be a bit of a nightmare, pots are just the ticket.
Loved the live. The Rhododendrons are going to look so stunning as they grow and go into bloom. Thank you so much for doing the live. See ya tomorrow 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻
We love to see your work but it was also great and fun watching Stephanie planting and riding around with you. Also walking around on the steps you made with no had rails.. she is a really fun friend of yours. It was a great video😊
Thanks Dan. Sorry I missed the live by 3 hours. So glad to hear water is on the horizon. Wished I’d gad a chance to ask Nick about his involvement and why he has decided to work so much at the chateau. Love that he is and thinking he’s invested in it. Would love to hear from as it’s not been mentioned.
It seems like dear Stephanie is a hard worker..no matter what she is doing…a great friend to us as well as all the people at her facility…I can easily say Stephanie’s mom raised a great worker, concerned person,
Great livestream. Some of the comments though! About 2 minutes after you said helpers are not possible some people ask if they can come and help. Similarly questions about your private life just after you said the vlog was about the chateau! Oh and then then the religious comments. You keep your cool though!
Merci pour ce live. Vraiment rassuré de savoir que le maire vous aide et que vous n’avez pas de soucis de permis de construire. D’un autre côté, vous avez plus de follower qu’il n’y a d’habitants dans toute la Creuse !
Every day is just a new look for each facet of the chateau experience, whether it's the chateau itself, or the gardens, the drive leading to it, and so on. Just an absolute pleasure to witness the monumental changes taking place in this miraculous endeavor. Dan, Nick, and the team - We are so proud of you and proud to be subscribers and fans of the channel. By the way - It was great to see Stephanie working the soil with her artistry and experience, too! God Bless. 🤩
I get the 'drift' re privacy Dan. I wont ask about Cameron & Kat again...but...it would be good to see more of Kat, a bit of female input. Was sooo good to see Analyse & the boys, make it a bit more fun for us chicks ❤ 35:24
What are your long term plans for the Chateau? My husband and I truly enjoy watching your program together. Your craftsmanship and attention to detail is inspiring. We watched you doing the gardens at Chateau LaLand as well.
It's looking wonderful and love the pink color of the shrubs and the plants look very healthy. Always great to see you and Nick❤ that is right the beauty of the yard is a big importance of the surrounding of the chateau
I love seeing all the overall progress in and around the chateau. Greetings from 🇨🇦 Canada. I have been following you since the beginning. So exciting this legacy your building. Congratulations on your success. ❤
Rhidodendrums are perfect along the road. Can just picture it in 3 years. You are doing your beautiful chateau justice iwith your lovely expanding gardens.
Exciting news that you are getting extra hands to help out around the Chateau. I do enjoy seeing the garden come to life as much as I enjoy watching the Chateau come to life. It’s all looking great! Anna
@@zie9171 Bonjour Many thanks for your message but I've already written to Dan on May 15, 2023 but no answer. I explained to him my holidays camp in the chateau during several years. You can read it. I broke my arm during my last summer camp at the chateau.😥😩
@claudineducluzeau9104 hello Claudine. So sorry that you broke your arm while on holiday. So sore!! I'm sure your memories are fascinating and I hope Dan replies to you. Apologies for writing in English but my French is very poor, sadly. Wishing you well. X
@@zie9171 Bonjour, It may seem paradoxical but it was my best holidays camp. With my broken arm, I was separated from the other children and lived with the kitchen and laundray staff. I was very young(now I'm 73 years) but I remember very well. Do you retrieve my previous message to Dan on May 2023 ?
Good explanations on why you're doing the ground cover now. I enjoy these discussions immensely, the reasons why you chose to do different times. I did a lot of renovations before I retired, (only built new ground up a few times). So these are my favoutite discussions. I found it a real challenge trying to explaining why I did different things at different times. So, thanks!
