As a furry and a Lolita thank you for saying we aren't all sexual deviants. Furries and lolitas both have issue with the media saying were purely sexual for our hobby/interests and its really frustrating. Thank you for understanding.

Goths also understand our subculture being misconstrued as overly sexual. (No thanks to the people out there who aren't in the subculture but use that particular look to further the misconception so they can get attention and "edgy girl" points on the internet 🙄) re the video itself, when Drama Kween said, "not a lot of people take Lolita fashion seriously," I understood her to mean people outside the community not taking it seriously. I don't think she was saying people in the community aren't serious about it. But honestly, the majority of people don't take alternative fashions seriously if they're not part of one of those alternative groups.

Sigh. Lolita, as a name or term of endearment, is a derivative from Lola, which itself can often be a derivative of other names such as Lourdes. It existed as a term or term of endearment well before Nabokov.

What TikTok calls lolita aesthetic or lolitacore is nymphet fashion

It makes me sad to see the book dismissed as gross without any more depth (even though I will be the first person to tell you it's a nauseating read in many parts). Nabokov himself was a victim of CSA, and the story is not meant to paint Humbert in a positive light. Unfortunately, people have been wildly misinterpreting the book for decades now, including every major adaptation of it, so it's kind of a lost cause. I recommend the Lolita Podcast, which goes in-depth to the book and its legacy, including interviews with people in the first group that Drama Kween mentioned. The podcast host acknowledges but doesn't discuss lolita fashion since it's basically unrelated to the book. It's pretty great, if you can handle the heaviness of the topic.

I really think Tripp used the word lolita to reference mostly old-school gothic lolita with the lace. It's just lolita inspired

In the book "Lolita a Style Icon"- a book that explores women's attraction to innocent, feminine and juvenile aesthetics; correctly states that 'Japanese Lolita' has no connection with Nabokov. Whats interesting is that for styles that do take from Delores Haze such as kinderwhore or the dollette/coquette are actually also based on feminist principles, reclaiming the look from the male fantasy.

Okay this is super nitpicky so I apologize. But Lolita has no meaning. It does not mean a sexual girl or anything like that. Lolita is the girls name in the book, short of Delorace. I think people get it mixed up with the word nymphet and haven't ever actually read the book. This fake meaning we've placed on a word that is purely someone's name also affects lolita fashion as people think it has some sexual definition. Moral of the story, it's just a name.

Everyone I know who discovered Lolita fashion themselves discovered Lolita fashion ages before they found out about the book and didn’t find the book by themselves they were always told about it from someone else

My theory for why people sexualize things (Lolita fashion, furries) is this: Sees new thing -> animal brain uncomfortable Me uncomfortable = bad Sex = bad (because society?) Therefore, new + uncomfortable = sexual??? There's more nuance to this but I don't have the energy to explain

I just realized where I've seen the word Lolita for the first time. As an explanation for what Lolicon (yuck!) is, as a genre of manga. And in general, I expect there's more people who see it first in some connection with anime/manga. So I'm thinking, maybe that's another reason for this fashion style being sexualized?

“Lolita aesthetic” is the term mostly used to mean inspired by the movie and was made mostly popularized on tumblr when Lana was really popular on there. There’s definitely a different connotation between “Lolita Aesthetic” and “Lolita Fashion”

The thing that people seem to forget is that in the book Lolita the girl is referred to as a nymphet. That is what the esthetic would actually be called.

tbh i do kind of take umbrage with the idea of "we should call people out for wearing children's clothing" posited by Drama Kween because like... where do we draw the line? children wear child sized versions of adult clothing all the time! that's normal! it's clothes! we're going to keep going on weird goose chases if we "call out" every woman we see "sexualizing children's clothing" because at the end of the day they're like... usually not wearing children's clothing? this goes for both lolita dresses or tennis skirts or overalls or whatever? this is largely a perception based on misogyny, that women are "asking for it" based on what they're wearing, and that women aren't in control of their own sexuality. pedophiles aren't interested in adult women wearing "childish" clothes! if pedophilia is what we're concerned about, say that. and another minor nitpick: the idea that Lolita & Vladimir Nabokov are not relevant in modern culture is a bit strange- Nabokov was hugely influential on modern literature, and the idea of an "unreliable narrator" presented in Lolita is still largely important today. i think a lot of people haven't read Nabokov's Lolita (not encouraging ppl to read it if it will trigger them or if they are uncomfortable with the content) but it's important to remark that it isn't an ENDORSEMENT of pedophiles, although the Kubrick film does do a lot of aestheticize and sensationalize the story, which is perhaps why it holds such a contentious position in modern culture.

I remember when I first started being super interested in Lolita fashion, I was around 12 I think. I told my grandparents that I wanted to wear Lolita dresses and they instantly were appalled, and instantly thought of the book.. my own grandparents 😭 that sucks-

Personally, as an apothisexual (sex-repulsed asexual that is also repulsed by sexual media and content), I absolutely HATE that so many people associated lolita fashion with fetishes. I discovered the fashion long before I knew about the book and only learned about the book through a video explaining that the 2 were not related.

i’m gonna say it because it needs to be said people need to stop labeling everyone as a predator over clothes/aesthetics. it really hurts victims more than it could ever help. misusing charged and specific language really waters it down and makes it harder for all of us to know exactly what they mean and what to look out for (ntm how often they are used as dogwhistles against a lot of unrelated communities like queer people). it would also help if people stop using words like “kink” or “sexual-“ in these topics because they too are used as dogwhistles! it makes less sense with fashion but a lot of people don’t understand the damage this language has done to people and their communities. it’s the same antagonism i got when i came out, or when people i know or know of came out. it’s not helping anyone to try to monitor and police levels of sexuality in fashion, and i feel it’s important to note how this same language is used against queer people and other groups.

I like how you mentioned Lolita is just a name out there and he did not invent it. I have an aunt named Lola which Lolita could’ve been used as a nickname for her maybe when she was younger cuz Mexicans normally add -ita to someone’s name if they’re young or for a nickname as a form of affection. For instance myself, I’m Claudia but people will call me Claudita lol idk if other cultures do that. But that was my first experience with the name and that’s what I thought, it’s just a name and then later on I found Lolita fashion and still just related it to just a name and considered it a cute name for a cute fashion. I found out about the book 🤢 after discovering the fashion.

Just like goths, lolitas are pretty bold and honest people, if it was a fetsh we would have said it ourselves a looooooong time ago.

Technically nymphet is the term for the girls, but I'm pretty sure that's just supposed to be their age and thin body type. He goes into detail about it in the first chapter. Most people who reference Lolita the book haven't read one page.

what women wear is so often seen as something they're only doing for the attention of men, to the point where even when the clothing they wear is clearly non-sexual and childlike, the conclusion isn't "oh she's not doing this for a man"," it's "oh gross, this is what she thinks a man will be into." (not that only women wear lolita, but it is a fashion that society at large sees as being for women, so the conclusions society draws from it are based on its view of women and their clothing)

there was this really amazing podcast series i listened to about how the nabokov book has been misinterpreted forever especially in film , when the actual book is supposed to have an unreliable narrator who youre supposed to realize is an abuser and the villain of the story. i think it was just called the lolita podcast? they briefly gloss over how the egl community doesn't have anything to do with the book and a more thorough dive on the fashion aesthetic that actually was derived from the (once again, inaccurate to the book and sexualized) movies

As someone who is into Lolita the fashion the aesthetic and the book this is such a frustrating topic because they are all so misunderstood by people who see one post and think they know everything I don’t need explain how Lolita fashion is misunderstood you know but also the aesthetic whilst the film is…problematic to say the least the costume design was really great and they put together some gorgeous looks and really carved out an aesthetic that takes so much talent and sure it can be “sexual” in the way any clothes can depending on who’s wearing them in what context in the same way literally anything can be sexual and as a big literature nerd I get so upset about the hate towards the book like it’s a book for sexualising children it’s a really interesting and nuanced take on abuse and abusers and their mindset and there are all these great moment s of seeing this guy who is a monster trying to justify himself but ah img these moments of self awareness or like these moments where it’s so clear to you as a reader this man is a monster and it’s difficult I think this is a book that should never be adapted because you just can’t carry that over into other mediums like that and everyone that has made films seems to think it was a sexy love story not like a horror it’s so maddening my guy Vlad is turning in his grave at what they did to his book

Mentioning the acceptance of children dressing "adult" makes sense to me, I was being shamed for not being dressed for my age in middle school for wearing scottie dog print shirts, now I'm being shamed for wanting to wear frilly dresses with scottie dog prints. People just want people to not act like kids, even kids themselves. This is actually part of the reason lolota fashion got started, rejecting the idea that the second you hit puberty you have to start presenting yourself as an ideal wife and mother to attract men.

A couple of years ago I told my mum that I wanted to wear Lolita Fashion. She was absolutely horrified. My brother explained to me about the book and it got me curious. I got recommend videos about the book such as Adapting Lolita by Lola Sebastian and on Spotify I found a great podcast called Lolita Podcast. They actually really got me interested in the topic of child s£xual abuse. So this unlucky hononym actually got me into thinking how to portray such a dark topic in media and try to help by making better stuff then the two Lolita movies (the book still holds up in my opinion) which are objectively AWFUL. That being said it sucks that you guys are confused with the book. Also as a last note. What child even dresses like this? Sorry but your knowledge of child fashion is outdated by like a 100 years.
