Hi Everyone: This vehicle had an oil change done at 137,629 miles on 1-31-15. 2,684 miles later the vehicle stopped running and the consumer coasted to the side of the road. He started checking fluids and found no oil on the dipstick. After adding five quarts of oil, the oil dipstick shows one quart overfull. So this tells us the engine only had 1 quart of oil in it due to the fact it's a 5 quart system.
Since the consumer recently purchased the vehicle (12-24-14 ), the vehicle was towed back to the repair shop where they brought it for an evaluation. This facility obviously didn't do a physical exam on the vehicle due to the fact of the way there invoice is worded.
" NOISE FROM ENGINE, CUSTOMER STATED HE ADDED OIL. INTERNAL KNOCK FROM ENGINE POSSIBLE ROD KNOCK. CUSTOMER RUN THE ENGINE WITH LOW OIL. CUSTOMER STATED OIL WAS CHANGED IN JAN AND THE LEVEL WAS NOT CHECKED" End quote.
At this point the Consumer was very frustrated and asked me to find out what happened to his vehicle. This video clearly shows the oil filter is loose, which means it was Never Tightened Properly at the time of the oil change. This issue caused the engine to leak oil over a period of time which damaged the Consumers engine. Will advise the customer to contact the oil change repair facility at this point.

my subaru legacy was leaking oil onto my exaust causing it to burn and caused alot of smoke coming out of my hood when it was idling or at a red light. i was told that subarus were notorious for gasket leaks so i pretty much assumed that was my problem. luckily though before i brought it in to get checked out i changed my oil. and the oil filter was was extremly loose just like that one. so when i changed the oil and put a new filter on i havent had a problem since

good afternoon, I have a problem with my chevy silverado 2000 1500 engine, 6 cylinders, when ender the truck yes. accelerate it does not throw the oil per to accelerate a little, completely pulls all the oil through the oil filter, it even looks like the package is out of place, and change 3 times the filter, check that it did not have double packing, change vulvo pcv, and I do not know what else to do if it is clogged where it pumps the filter oil to the engine, what can I do? or what could be the problem, do not throw drops of oil, completely strip all the oil

I can;t tell if mine is loose or not. I cannot tighten/un-tighten by hand even with force. The Oil wrench tool doesn't grip the filter well enough even though that one is the right size for it (tool just slips off as I turn it). Car drives fine. I touched the filter a couple days after driving it and there is very little oil around the filter - no where near the amount in this video though. 2015 Kia Optima EX - This car has an entire plastic engine guard...While I COULD take it off, its approx. 12+ nuts/bolts to take off. The guard has a cutout the diameter of the oil filter so gripping it is close to impossible by hand, however, you can get SOME leverage, but again, cannot be loosened/tightened by hand.

Good Morning Daniel: My apologies for not understanding your question, or questions? How do us viewer's know if you as a mechanic didn't loosen the filter before the video?? I thought you wanted an answer to the question you posted. This morning i spoke to Bob Baker Toyota 619-265-3131. " We use a conventional 5-30 wt oil ( Not A Blend ) in the vehicles we service every 5,000 miles. The only time we use Full Synthetic is when a newer vehicle calls for it " end quote. I don't know where your getting stuck on this blend word ( I don't remember ever saying it ) please show me where I said that? In closing Daniel: I wish you all the best in your career, it's time for me to help my customers now. Have a Great Day!

If mechanics used torque wrenches on oil filters and oil pan drain plugs used new drain plug washers and made sure old filter gasket came out with the old oil filter most of these issues would be eliminated.

Or sometimes mechanics put a wrong filter in, they screwed a larger diameter filter causing the filter seal to not engage the engine surface properly causing leaks. That happened to me before and thankfully I caught it before much damage was done. U cant trust almost any mechanic nowadays. Not only they try to sell u completely unnecessary and expensive jobs but they sometimes skipped them altogether and then charge u for something that wasnt even performed at all or done right.

First thing I do is inspect there work after an oil change including the dealership. Look at the dipstick and make sure the cap is put back on. Look under for any oil and report before driving away if you see anything not right. I started taking before pictures in front of them at check in so they know to pay attention to my car. People need to slow down and stop rushing the techs and not looking before and after

Good points. I drove home from an routine oil change a couple of years ago. 8 miles give or take. I popped the hood in my driveway just to look things over and noticed the plastic motor cover missing and also the oil cap! There wasn't any spray underneath the hood thank God. I check the dipstick and it was fortunately still right on the money. I called the shop immediately and he calmly told me to drive on back over and he'll put everything back on it like it was no big deal. I never went back to that place again. He wasn't rushed during the oil change, wasn't busy at all.

Great video! I had 2015 Ford Fusion hybrid. Most of time, car runs with electric battery without using gas engine. I had first oil change by myself about a year ago. Unfortunately, I could not find the oil filter wrench when I installed the oil filter, so I hand tightened the oil filter. Obviously the oil filter was not tightened enough, which resulted in an oil leak from the filter. Now the engine has a loud ticking noise when it is running. Some kind damage was caused due to the low oil in engine. I am wondering what could be the damage. I am planning to remove the engine cover to find out the cause, but not sure where I should check. I suspect the ticking noise might has something to do with the valve lifters as I learned from reading online articles, but not sure about the detailed root cause. Could you please offer your thoughts on what could be the damage? Thank you!
@dparis1768
@dparis1768 Год назад
Unfortunately your hand tight wasn't enough. Definitely internal engine damage but it is still running. The oil needs to be inspected for metal debree. Depending how much you find may require a engine rebuild before you have castrophic engine failure. Otherwise the motor can still run with some damage. Also their can be metal debree in the oil pan. You can also cut open the oil filter to see if any metal debree is in the oil filter. When installing a new filter, fill filter with oil, wipe oil on gasket, hand tighten to motor and then turn oil filter up to additional full turn or 3 quarter of a turn. Yes you don't want over-tighten but then again you don't want it loosening up. Use best judgment. Most of these lube places do it hand tight. That why I do my own. Hope everything turned out for you.

Thank you for your tip on how to install the filter properly and your inspection suggestions. I also noticed the oil type I used is not the same one recommended in the vehicle manual. I am going to change the oil again with the correct oil type. While I change the oil I will check to see if there is any metal debris in the oil filter. Thank you.

@yougoog1 Your welcome! That should be good start to see what's really going on. And then make decisions on what direction you want go. If the noise gets worse definitely time to go through the motor. Make sure you find a trusted mechanic to work with. Goodluck!

Hello, personally I would go buy a good quality oil filter , Wix is the ones I use for my customers. Then just replace the oil filter with a new one. I put a little oil on the rubber seal and tighten by hand tight and then 1/2 to 3/4 turn with a filter wrench. Start your engine for a minute to make sure no leaks. Then shut it off and double check your oil level.

john sadler How do us viewer's know if you as a mechanic didn't loosen the filter before the video?? And one other sceptical question. .if the vehicle had a loose oil filter well as loose as you claim it to be why didn't it blow off and or loose all the oil before going almost 3000 miles which the automotive bureau recommends any conventional oil change 3000 mile interval standard on conventional and your stating 5000 ?? Just some things I would like to be clarified. .as a fellow mechanic some of your statements are not validated like the filter being that loose and not blowing off due to the pressure of the motor or if it's that loose all the oil should have leaked out within a shorter mileage time frame. .....Show less Reply ·john sadler 1 second ago +Daniel Helmuth Hi Daniel: Great Question ! The reason I didn't loosen the filter before the video is due to the fact I have dedicated my life to helping the Consumer with there Automotive needs for 39 years now. I was in a National Automotive Monthly Magazine called Undercar Digest with the title John Sadler A Passion for Automobiles and People is the best way to describe what i do. I have done Investigative work for the Bureau of Automotive Repair before due to I know how to present the facts. I have many unsolicited reviews and letters in my shop and on the Internet, One consumer calls me a Diamond in the Engine, another one says one of San Diego's Top Mechanics. I have been an Expert Witness for Customers in court explaining the facts to Judges. I am on an Automotive Advisory Board for Cuyamaca College in El Cajon Ca. Started making these video's in August of 2012 when a tough problem would come in the shop to help out Consumers from all over the World. The consumers thank me from Brazil, Spain, Montana to name a few places. You can read some of there comments on my other video's.And finally when all the Insurance Adjuster's come around and try to give me $500.00 dollars and then i have to promise to send all my Customers to them. I tell them to leave my shop and call there employers. In other words Daniel " you can't buy me, I'm not for sell ".Ok, hope that answers your first question. Your second question now is why didn't the filter blow off and or loose all the oil before going almost 3,000 miles?The reason the oil filter didn't blow off is there a quite a few threads holding the filter to it's housing, so the fact that the rubber seal is touching the housing is helping to keep it in place. The fact that it's loose is what causes some oil to leak out every time you drive the vehicle. Further I asked the Customer how much they drove and found out his work is close to home. So if you take the mileage of 2,684 and divide it by 89 days the time between the oil change and the problem you come up with about 30 miles a day. Then when you take into account the physical oil staining on the oil filter you come up with it's perfectly reasonable to loose 4 quarts of oil in that time frame. Now for your 3rd question Daniel: your stating the automotive bureau recommends any conventional oil 3000 mile interval standard on conventional Show less Reply ·john sadler 1 second ago +john sadler and your stating 5000 ??. Here is a Great example for you, 2010 Toyota Tacoma 4.0 L 2wd. This engine takes 5-30 wt. oil with an SL rating and ILSAC multi grade oil. The Toyota Motor Corporation that made this vehicle states to change the oil every 5,000 miles. A 2000 Dodge Neon with a 2.0L engine states to change the oil every 7,500 miles. I get my Automotive Repair and Service Information from the Companies that made the vehicles. In closing: I sincerely hope I validated my statements for you Daniel.

If that car had run 2000 miles and the filter was that loose the whole time that filter wouldn't be on that vehicle anymore lol. And the engine looked like it had a leak coming from other parts other than the plug or filter. The filter could have oil on it because of a leak coming from higher up in the engine, and the same with the blowback? The oil filter isn't that loose for 2000+ miles
