LOW $ JUNKYARD 4.8L TURBO-ALL THE BOOST!! 1200-HP, BIG BANG 4.8L

TURBO LS, SBE 4.8L, boosted with Cheap E-BAY turbos, til it breaks! Behind the scenes of The original Big Bang LS Project. How much power will a stock (Gen 3) bottom end take? What worked. What didn't! What would I change to do it better? Can an SBE 4.8L make even more power with better prep, turbos and intercooler?

Gale and I don't agree on the boost gauge-my point was that the pistons and rods don't know what the boost is, only the cylinder pressure. The Boost gauge can be used with great success on relative changes, but I wish Gale all the best on selling the general public on his Fancy mass/density/temperature measurement!

@@hendo337 I hear ya. I still love my blue ovals but Chevys definitely has some good stuff. The Coyote 5.0 is still king of the V8 pile but affordability & availability for engine swaps makes it take a backseat to the bow tie LS motors for engine swaps. I absolutely love my 1994 mustang gt, I've had it since new and I'm finally ready to make the Cardinal sin of sticking a 6.0 LS in it....😱

@cardboardkiller6883 Год назад
@K____ R____ if you look at the cost, you can buy 3 LS motors for what 1 coyote 5.0 costs. If you look at Ford's history, they have always been competitive with Chevy & Dodge and have always done it with less displacement. It's pretty impressive when you think about how a 5.0L engine can rival Chevy's legendary 6.2L LS motor. Which is why Ford doesn't make a big block version. Stock Mustang GTs are pushing nearly 500hp off the showroom floor. That and fleet displacement regulations along with emissions standards...

Something I would really like to see: Take an NA, 7000+ rpm LS using the typical LS7 lifters that most people run and test running them at various plunger preloads from ~.020" all the way up to .180" or so with no changes other than the pushrod lengths. See if there is any power difference or if the curve falls off at earlier/later RPM with different amounts of preload.

The real killer is ignition timing and people trying to push 91 pump gas to that level. I know because I've pushed them on 91 until they broke. Now I use water methanol and I'm thinking of moving to e85 and meth injection on the next setup. I would definitely like to see a fuel vs ignition timing curve for a boosted 4.8/5.3 in a dyno video.

Boost also depends on the intake manifold(s), what turbo(s) size, etc. if you have a better flowing intake system, you’ll make the same power on less boost than a system with the same FI but a restrictive intake system. Example: I’m a miata guy. A popular setup is a GT2554R turbo @ 16psi. That’ll do about 225whp with 3” intake piping and 2.75 or 3” exhaust. The other popular system is a GT2560, which is a little bigger turbo, @ 13psi. With the same 3” intake/exhaust and the same size intercooler, the 2560 does 250whp@13psi.

2:50 thats what i am doing atm, top of cylinder walls had been damaged by piston (84mm piston in 83.8-83.85mm bore, last owner(tuning company) did everything wrong, even rod bearing clearences are 3x the factory spec) so i hone it out to 84.05mm, and will reuse old rings (in that 83.8 bore clearance was only .014", when forged piston needs for circuit application like .021-.025", and after honing i will end up (what looks like) .031"-.033" ring gap as i want this engine to max out 950hp turbo, and for $800 i paid, engine with forged internals and arp everything is steal here in Slovakia

I'm a big fan of the 4.8 (underdog) I'd like to build using all the best gm parts (used) inc supercharger! Have you done one of them builds?

I see you run the fuel rails one in and one out and just loop the front. Lots of people say that is a no no. Is there a way to test if running dual inlets to the back then both into the regulator is actually better than the way you have?

@Richard Holdener taught me one thing, mainly: Turbos seem to be THE lowest-stress way of making big daily power, as they don't require this: (very rough estimates for emphasis in this post, forgive the inaccuracy of the quanta) A) make 1500hp gross. Spend 400 of it on driving blower, net 1100. instead, they seem to provide: B) make 1150hp gross. Spend 50of it on backpressure to drive turbos. net 1100hp. I UNDERSTAND that more than 100 hp is required by the turbos, but 50 of that is HEAT energy converted by the turbine directly into compressing incoming air. In other words, exhaust that is 1200 degrees BEFORE the turbo is not at that temperature after the turbo. That selfsame heat "lost" (I know partially due to lower pressure after the turbo) is LARGELY used by the turbine instead of being discarded to the atmosphere, wastefully. The ideal turbo motor would have exhaust leaving at ambient temperature, for a true "closed loop" level of energy recycling. The ideal turbo motor would have exhaust leaving at ambient temperature, for a true "closed loop" level of energy recycling. These are rough estimates of a primitive sort. Supercharged and turbocharged engines are the only engines that come anywhere near close to providing motive power to the piston on the intake stroke due to the intake pressure being higher than the crankcase pressure. When that exhaust valve is closed, there are only two pressures on piston: intake tract on the top and crankcase on the bottom. Thanks largely to @RichardHoldener's explanations, I understand turbos and all sort of power adders much more than I used to. I have occasionally wondered if they used six strokes, as in, two succeeding power strokes, to extract even more work from the combustion pressure before finally letting it escape, would they have more efficient engines? I know that recompressing the combustion gases to get ready for the second "power" stroke would consume some power, but would it NET more energy harvesting from each drop of gasoline than the single power stroke does now? What would it be like with over 400 crank degrees being under pressure, especially if you reactivated the spark plugs from near TDC of the second stroke all the way to near the BDC? Someone can try this with an engine management system and custom 1/3 speed camshafts instead of the usual 1/2 speed. Just having the spark plugs fire for all 180 degrees of first combustion stroke then again for close to 180 degrees for the second combustion stroke may allow harvesting a bit more of the energy. However, one would want more cylinders to yield the same number of initial power pulses relative to "compression" pulses on the crank for smoothness, yes?
