Yeah this still isn't a cheap build. Get you a junkyard LS complete to the throttle plate and computer / harness for about 500 from a u-pull yard out of a wrecked truck. It was running when they wrecked it. For that matter, you can grab the trans for a couple hundred more. Or buy a wrecked 3/4 ton van from Copart, then you got everything in one package to pull stuff off of. Drop a cam / springs, a set of injectors, and a tune on it. You're pushing 450hp for about 3 grand WITH a trans.

Ahh Yes, a common sense build. I've done the same with a 4.8 junk yard motor, changed valve springs, cleaned the stuck lifters(due to long overdue oil changes), and a GM hotcam and valve springs. Dropped into a '70 C10. A tire burnin', 100 smile-a-minute joy to drive. Faster than any factory truck, and I kept all the $$ for myself.

There were some hand me down things in this video that they don't teach in these so called "tech" schools. My biggest takeaways were hammering the tape for a better paint edge and the sanding on the heads. I don't do this for a living so it may be more common knowledge for others, but it's good to know. These are the little gold nuggets of knowledge I look for that only come from working with the "old timers". I was lucky enough to work with some people that taught me things that are tricks of the trade. I have applied them throughout my travels and allowed me to do things others won't.

I have the 5.3L LC9 that I'm keeping mostly stock with the exception of a valvetrain upgrade to an LS3 cam set-up which is currently on order from Summit Racing. I had purchased a running 2001 Suburban with 229,400 miles two years ago for the intent to drop the motor into my '68 C10. But I had came across a 2005 LQ4 6.0 just a couple months ago which will be dropped into my C10 instead. I'll continue watching your videos to learn more and apply some of the knowledge towards each of my projects. Thank you for posting a great video!

Do a 6.0, building a 4.8 in a truck unless it's an s10 isn't worth it unless it's boosted, it's not very fun doing all the work in a 4.8 with a sloppy stage 2 just to get beat by a stock gen 5. To compete with a 4.8 a 3600+ stall and 4.56 gears is the bare minimum and it's kinda sad because I love my 4.8 ☹️

They always forget to mention all the expensive components need to install the cheap 5.3 or 4.8 into an older vehicle, the cost for a conversion harness and fuel system and exhaust will easily be over $1,500 plus all the little miscellaneous needed just to make it start, let alone tuning. Of your vehicle was already set up for a small block then it would be cheap just to put in or hop up the small block.
@albertgaspar627
@albertgaspar627 3 года назад
@@briang4470 exactomondo! Give me a G body with a 305 in it, and its cheaper to find a Vortec 350 or any Gen one 350, and swap over the oil pan, throttle linkage, power steering setup, alternator brackets, and so on--'cause its all free if you aren't looking for chrome. What's gonna be fun years from now, when all these LS swaps hit the used hot rod market...a buyer wants to know what year harness was used on what year engine, and the seller's gonna shrug, "dunno, used a 5.3, blew it up, got a 4.8, hacked the harness for other sensors...its probably half car, half SUV harness by now." Then over in the Ford camp...everyone who dumped cash into a 4.6 litre DOHC Terminator swap thinking they have the latest fad....now look as dated as a 1990's LT1 swap as everyone's crushing over a Coyote swap instead. Might as well do a Dart 363 bored and stroked out, with a top end that looks old school but kicks Coyote ass.

Ahh the good ol' msd 6014, I got a 5.3 LM7 from a friend for $100, less than 90k, and he had pulled it years ago and didn't use it, I got that, an intake from Holley cause it was the cheapest at the time, and the MSD 6014 box, and got some budget Longtube's, and swapped it in my 1986 Camaro Z/28 for under $1000, used my old Edlebrook 650cfm carburator that I already had, and the swap works amazing and actually lights up the rear tires for the first time in the cars life😂 it's impressive what you can do with these LS engines, it's a night and day difference in power from the stock engine I had and there is soo much more aftermarket options to go with on these, I'm planning to go with small twins going to an 850cfm demon carb for a blow thru boost set-up, but first I'm gonna test the full reliability of the n/a setup before boost to get use to it, it's not tested yet cause I have to fix other things to meet vermont inspection requirements, after all this was originally a $900 Camaro

I liked that comment (5.0>LS) because I wish it was true, it’s not. Unfortunately. Funny thing, I’m trying to “LS” my 5.0 and everyone I know is telling me I’m building a dog. “Your ported explorer intake is too big” “Your 210cc heads are too big” “Your cam is too small” (comp xe258hr) So an LS can have high flowing heads and intake and a mild cam for 330ish streetable HP but building the same on a Ford is a mismatch? Idk, I’m not changing my plans. Got the explorer, got the heads, got the “big dogs porting” stage 2 intake. Just need the cam and the time to install. Maybe I’m a fool, maybe I gotta stop listening to people that say high flow heads and intake don’t work on a “mild build”. I guess GM just doesn’t know what they’re doing on those gen 3 and gen 4 engines 🤨

Which part of the 5.0 is better? The anemic heads? Horrible manifolds? Or the barely over 200hp they make? They don’t even have a timing chain tensioner to keep them in time as they age.

I've done heads like that on hundreds of engines. Really never got skunked doing it that way. Not saying it's right, though.
