It was recently brought to my attention is that I made a mistake in the video regarding the torque spec of the Pinch bolt also known as the through bolts for the ball joint. I said in the video that the torque spec was 33 foot pounds or 45 Newton meters. That is incorrect. The torque specifications is 72 to 86 foot pounds or 98 to 117 nothing meters. Sorry for any inconvenience. Please do verify the torque specifications for your particular vehicle before completing the job.

Removal was relatively easy. Until I was installing the new Ball joint and realized the spindle was lower and turned clockwise (no longer centered as in your video) making reassembly impossible. I only had one side of the vehicle lifted. Should both wheels be lifted to unload the suspension to have avoid this? Thank you.

Yes both Wheels should be lifted so that you do not have an uneven load on the suspension. I believe the controller is not effective but the strut is held by the stabilizer link.

Interesting. You mentioned that the ball joints fail at around 78000km. I have a similar Santa Fe (2.4L) and am at 79000km. Both front ball joints are being replaced now.

Yeah the Santa fe that I maintain had to have them replaced relatively early in comparison to most other manufacturers. I was surprised. I think it's a crappy design or just not a part that is strong enough for the weight of the Santa Fe. That same ball joint is used on many other Hyundai and Kia products. If you check my other videos you'll see the exact same ball joint on a Kia Rondo. That one failed at a lower mileage as well but I don't remember what mileage it was a bit higher than the Santa Fe though. Don't forget to hit that subscribe button :-)

Hey John I think you are correct. I don't remember where I got the torque spec from I believe it was from the dealership. All data does say 72 to 86 ft lb. Shop key also says the same thing. I'll update the description hopefully people come across this. I don't know how I can re-edit the video or fix it on RU-vid. I'll try to figure something out. Thanks for letting me know I appreciate it.

Should the alignment be checked after this repair?

Most times the alignment does not have to be checked or altered after a ball joint repair, that being said I definitely recommend keeping an eye on your tires to make sure they wear properly.

Did you use new bolts for the ball joint are did you remove the bolts from the old ball joint?

Hey James the ball joint that we got ended up coming with new bolts. Every single one that I have purchased for any Hyundai product usually comes with new bolts so I just use the new bolts.

Hey Charles I really appreciate the question. I think it's a number of things for me. Just the stress of life some days and then dealing with ridiculous repairs other days can contribute to me using not so good language. I think it really helps me with my frustration, of course depending upon the day. Unfortunately in the trade the four letter word along with most of it's other friends are commonly used. I don't know why that is the culture but it definitely is lol. The stress of running a shop and life itself definitely doesn't help with the use of profanity. Hopefully you didn't find it offensive.
